This opens the door for broader access to Zepbound, which shouldn’t be currently covered by Medicare and lots of other weight reduction insurance policy. Demand for the shot has skyrocketed over the past 12 months despite average demand Price tag of $1,000 per 30 days before the insurance.

In an announcement to CNBC, a spokesperson for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said that “current Medicare Part D and Medicaid coverage rules apply” to Zepbound. groundbreaking approval in December due to essentially the most common sleep-related respiration disorder.

Medicare Part D plans can only cover obesity medications in the event that they are used for an extra medically approved purpose approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the CMS spokesman said, citing the agency Instructions. The spokesperson added that Part D plans could think about using prior authorization – a process during which a provider must first obtain approval from an insurer – for these drugs to make sure they’re for that specific purpose be used.

The FDA approved Zepbound on Dec. 20 for patients with obesity and moderate to severe types of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which refers to pauses in respiration during sleep because of narrowed or blocked airways. According to Eli Lilly, Zepbound was the primary drug treatment approved for the estimated 20 million individuals with these types of the disease.

Medicare Part D plans can also provide coverage Novo NordiskWegovy, the burden loss drug, is thought for this other approved use: Reducing cardiovascular risk. Wegovy and Zepbound's diabetes counterparts — Ozempic and Mounjaro, respectively — are covered by Medicare and most insurance policy.

Both Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are studying their weight reduction drugs to treat fatty liver disease, chronic kidney disease, sleep apnea and more. To be covered, these drugs would want to have late-stage trial results after which seek FDA approval for these uses.

Meanwhile, federal Medicaid coverage for Zepbound and other obesity medications is determined by what condition they’re prescribed for and whether their manufacturer has signed a particular agreement Medicaid drug discount agreementsaid the speaker.

Under this agreement with the Secretary of Health and Human Services, manufacturers conform to provide rebates to states in exchange for Medicaid coverage of their drugs. The states share the rebates with the federal government.

A state Medicaid program must cover Zepbound whether it is prescribed for OSA and Eli Lilly has signed the Medicaid drug rebate agreement, the spokesman said.

However, if Zepbound is prescribed for weight reduction, state Medicaid programs should not required to cover the fee.

The Biden administration in November suggested a provision that may allow Medicare and Medicaid to cover weight reduction medications for patients with obesity. The rule would give thousands and thousands of individuals access to weekly injections, but would cost taxpayers as much as $35 billion over the subsequent decade.

It's unclear whether President-elect Donald Trump's administration will keep the rule in place.

The weekly injection is now The first drug treatment option was released for patients with moderate to severe obesity obstructive sleep apneaor OSA, which refers to interruption in respiration during sleep as a result of narrowed or blocked airways. Zepbound ought to be used together with a reduced-calorie weight-reduction plan and increased physical activity, the FDA noted in a news release.

According to Eli Lilly, an estimated 80 million patients within the United States suffer from this disease. About 20 million of those people suffer from moderate to severe types of the disease, but 85% of cases go undiagnosed, the corporate told CNBC earlier this yr.

“Too often, OSA is dismissed as 'just snoring' – but it is much more than that,” said Julie Flygare, president and CEO of Project Sleep, a nonprofit organization that advocates for sleep health and sleep disorders, in an Eli Lilly press release . “It is important to understand OSA symptoms and know that treatments are available, including new options like Zepbound. We hope this will lead to more meaningful conversations between patients and healthcare providers and ultimately lead to better health outcomes.”

Eli Lilly expects to bring the OSA drug to market early next yr. It is the primary approval beyond the treatment of obesity for Zepbound, which got here to market late last yr and can also be being tested for several other obesity-related diseases comparable to fatty liver disease. Tirzepatide, the energetic ingredient in Zepbound, has long been sold on the US market because the diabetes drug Mounjaro.

The agency's decision could pave the best way for Eli Lilly to get more comprehensive insurance coverage for Zepbound, which like other weight-loss drugs isn't covered by many insurance coverage. This includes the federal Medicare program, which only covers obesity medications in the event that they are approved and prescribed for extra health advantages.

The approval also underscores growing evidence that GLP-1 may bring additional health advantages, a category of weight reduction and diabetes treatments which have surged in popularity and been in brief supply over the past yr. In particular, Zepbound's predominant competitor, the burden loss drug Wegovy Novo Nordiskis just not approved for OSA.

Zepbound could possibly be a priceless recent treatment option for patients with OSA, which may cause loud snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness and result in serious complications comparable to stroke and heart failure. Patients with this condition have limited treatment options beyond wearing masks attached to cumbersome machines that generate positive airway pressure (PAP) to permit normal respiration.

Eli Lilly released initial results from two clinical trials in April that showed Zepbound was simpler than a placebo in reducing the severity of OSA in patients with obesity after one yr.

In June, Eli Lilly released additional data from the trials showing that Zepbound helped
resolve OSA in almost half of patients. The first study examined weekly injections in adults with moderate to severe OSA and obesity who weren’t receiving PAP therapy. The second study tested Zepbound in adults with the identical conditions, but these participants were on PAP therapy and planned to proceed it.

The data showed that 43% of individuals in the primary study and 51.5% of patients within the second study who took the best dose of Zepbound achieved “disease resolution,” in accordance with the corporate. This compares to 14.9% and 13.6% of patients who took a placebo within the two studies, respectively.

Researchers got here to those conclusions by studying an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), which records how persistently per hour an individual's respiration shows a restricted or completely blocked airway. The index is used to guage the severity of obstructive sleep apnea and the effectiveness of treating the condition.

The company explained that disease resolution in OSA is defined as a patient experiencing fewer than five AHI events per hour. According to Eli Lilly, it’s also defined as a one that has five to 14 AHI events per hour and scores a certain number on a typical survey measuring excessive daytime sleepiness.

The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that it contained the energetic ingredient Eli Lilly's Zepbound is a weight reduction medication no more shortagea call that can ultimately prevent drug pharmacies from producing cheaper, unbranded versions of the shot.

“The FDA has determined that the shortage of tirzepatide injection products, which first began in December 2022, has been resolved,” the agency said in a letter. “The FDA continues to monitor supply and demand for these products.”

The agency's decision, based on a comprehensive evaluation, marks the tip of a period during which certain pharmacies could manufacture, distribute or dispense unapproved versions of tirzepatide – the energetic ingredient in Zepbound – without facing consequences for related violations Deficiency status of the treatment meant.

Pharmacies that make compounded drugs must stop making compounded versions of tirzepatide in the subsequent 60 to 90 days, depending on the form of facility, the agency said. The FDA said the transition period will give patients time to change to the branded version.

That's a blow to some pharmacies, which say their copycat drugs help patients who don't have insurance coverage for Zepbound and might't afford the high price of around $1,000 a month. Zepbound and other weight-loss medications aren't covered by many insurance policy, but Eli Lilly's diabetes counterpart Mounjaro is.

It's the newest in a high-stakes dispute between Pharmaceuticals and the FDA over a shortage of tirzepatide, the energetic ingredient in Zepbound and Mounjaro. Eli Lilly has invested billions to expand its production capability for tirzepatide as the corporate struggles to maintain up with unprecedented demand.

A trade organization representing compounding pharmacies – the Outsourcing Facilities Association – sued the FDA on October 8 over the agency's decision to remove tirzepatide from its official drug shortage list just days earlier. The group claims the FDA acted without adequate notice and ignored evidence that a shortage of tirzepatide still exists. She also claimed that the FDA's motion was a coup for Eli Lilly on the expense of patients.

Following the lawsuit, the FDA said it might reconsider removing tirzepatide from the shortage list. This allowed pharmacies to proceed producing copycats while the agency reviewed its decision.

Compounded medications are customized alternatives to brand-name medications tailored to the needs of a particular patient. When a brand-name drug is briefly supply, pharmacies that manufacture drugs could make copies of the drug in the event that they meet certain requirements of federal law.

The Food and Drug Administration doesn’t review the protection and effectiveness of compounded products, however the agency has done so urged consumers to take the approved GLP-1 brand medications in the event that they can be found.

However, the FDA says it’s inspecting some outsourcing facilities that produce drugs website.

Patients are turning to compounded versions of tirzepatide due to intermittent shortages of the brand-name drugs within the U.S., which include high prices of $1,000 a month without insurance and other discounts. Many medical insurance firms don’t cover the fee of tirzepatide for weight reduction, making compounded versions a less expensive alternative.

The energetic ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic, semaglutide, has experienced temporary shortages over the past two years. But the FDA said earlier this month that each one doses of those drugs are actually available.

The agency has not yet announced whether it’s going to remove semaglutide from its shortage list – a call that will likely affect much more drug pharmacies since it is used more commonly than tirzepatide.

Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro are under patent protection within the United States and abroad, and Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly don’t supply the energetic ingredients of their drugs to outside groups. The firms say this raises questions on what some manufacturers are selling and marketing to consumers.

Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have each stepped as much as crack down on illegal versions of their treatments, suing weight-loss clinics, medical spas and prescription pharmacies within the US last yr. The FDA also said this was the case last month Receive reports of patients overdosing on compound semaglutide as a consequence of dosing errors, similar to patients self-administering incorrect amounts of treatment.

Direct-to-consumer healthcare startup Ro announced Wednesday that its platform will now offer cheaper offerings Single-dose vial of the burden loss drug Zepbound through a brand new partnership with Eli Lillywhich goals to simplify access to the favored treatment.

Ro said it should provide a “complete end-to-end” experience on a single platform and app, allowing eligible patients to receive a diagnosis and prescription for Zepbound and have vials of the drug delivered to their home. This is made possible through a novel integration with Eli Lilly's direct-to-consumer website. LillyDirectwhich already offers home delivery of Zepbound vials via a third-party digital pharmacy, Gift health.

Gifthealth will distribute the vials to patients who receive Zepbound prescriptions through a Ro-affiliated provider.

Zepbound Bottles are a cash-only product offered only through LillyDirect. This means patients pay for it themselves with money at a lower cost than the auto-injection type of the drug. According to Ro, the vials have the “cheapest” price of a branded drug GLP-1 without insurance. Demand for GLP-1 drugs, which mimic gut hormones to suppress appetite and regulate blood sugar, has skyrocketed prior to now two years.

“Patients typically have to go to multiple locations to get Lilly's medication, such as the doctor's office and then a pharmacy,” said Zachariah Reitano, co-founder and CEO of Ro, in an interview with CNBC. “This integration truly creates a seamless patient experience where they don’t have to go anywhere else. They can access doctors, labs and a pharmacy all in one place, giving them access to Zepbound vials.”

Ro runs a weight reduction program that already prescribes Zepbound in a single-dose auto-injector pen that patients can inject directly under the skin with the push of a button. But this way of the drug is way costlier than vials, costing about $1,000 a month without insurance.

Zepbound's 2.5-milligram and 5-milligram single-dose vials cost $399 per 30 days and $549 per 30 days, respectively, without insurance, making them more accessible to those that don't have insurance coverage for the drug. Eli Lilly began offering these bottles through LillyDirect in August.

“Whether you have insurance or you want the lowest priced cash-only branded GLP-1, which is the Zepbound vials, you can get it all by coming to Ro,” Reitano said, noting that Companies will help eligible patients determine which type of the drug is best for them based on their insurance.

He acknowledged that about $400 to $500 a month for Zepbound “is still out of reach for many, but now it's far more attainable than” $1,000 or more.

The popularity of pricey treatments like Zepbound and Novo NordiskWegovy, the weight-loss drug, has caused widespread shortages within the United States. This problem has now subsided after Eli Lilly and Nordisk made efforts to extend production capability for the drugs.

Still, cheaper compounded versions of GLP-1 have gained traction given the limited supply of brand-name drugs. Eli Lilly is working to expand access to its branded product Zepbound, in what appears to be an try to crack down on compounded versions of the drug.

Patrik Jonsson, Eli Lilly's president of cardiometabolic health, said in a news release Tuesday that the goal of the brand new integration is to “break down barriers and provide patients with safe and effective options they can rely on.”

The FDA is currently reconsidering its decision to remove Zepbound from the drug shortage list after a lawsuit was filed by a trade association representing drug pharmacies. Removing Zepbound from this shortage list essentially prevents drug manufacturing pharmacies from producing customized versions of the drug.

If that happens, Reitano said Ro will “follow all applicable laws and FDA guidelines” in addition to “fight to ensure our patients have access to the most effective and affordable products.”

The variety of prescription blockbuster weight-loss drugs greater than doubled within the U.S. in 2024, despite the fact that insurance coverage is proscribed and out-of-pocket costs for the treatments are high, it says Data published Thursday from drug savings company GoodRx.

The numbers are further evidence of insatiable demand for a preferred class of medication called GLP-1 and GIP agonists, which mimic gut hormones to suppress appetite and regulate blood sugar. This includes Novo Nordisk's weight reduction medication Wegovy and Eli Lilly's obesity treatment Zepbound, which have hefty list prices of around $1,000 per thirty days without insurance or savings cards.

Prescription drug counts for Wegovy and Zepbound have increased by greater than 100% and 300%, respectively, for the reason that start of 2024. Zepbound's increase reflects its first 12 months available on the market, because it was approved within the US in November 2023. Wegovy received US approval in 2021.

“It's just a pretty astronomical increase in sales, and for that reason a lot of eyes are on its affordability and accessibility,” said Tori Marsh, director of research at GoodRx, in an interview.

The data comes from GoodRx's latest Weight Loss Medications Tracker, which examines filling trends and spending patterns within the U.S. for popular weight reduction medications.

According to GoodRx, compliance rates are high, with only 9% of commercially insured people having full Zepbound coverage and 14% having full Wegovy coverage. This means insurance coverage that doesn’t require patients to beat additional hurdles, corresponding to prior approval or higher BMI requirements.

Far higher rates of patients — about 60% to 70% — have insurance policy with more restrictive drug coverage. However, Marsh said that even when a patient has insurance for weight reduction treatment, out-of-pocket costs can add up.

The average insured taking Zepbound can expect to pay over $2,500 a 12 months in copays for the drug, she said. GoodRx found that individuals spent a median of $231 out of pocket on a monthly Zepbound prescription from January 2023 to October of this 12 months.

“Insurance is simply no longer the emergency solution it once was,” Marsh said.

Meanwhile, almost one in five commercially insured people doesn’t have insurance coverage for a minimum of one brand-name GLP-1 and GIP agonist prescribed for weight reduction.

GoodRx found that Americans overspent a minimum of $200 million by paying full retail prices for weight-loss drugs as an alternative of using savings options like GoodRx coupons or assistance programs from Eli Lilly or Novo Nordisk. GoodRx said it calculated the overpayment figure based on the typical price people could have paid for a drug with a GoodRx discount.

GoodRx says people without insurance can save a median of $250 per thirty days or $3,000 per 12 months through the use of its weight reduction drug coupons.

GoodRx's data is consistent with other research that means coverage for weight-loss drugs is patchy within the U.S., corresponding to a survey published In October, a study found that lower than a fifth of enormous employers within the country include the price of those treatments of their medical insurance.

The federal Medicare plan also doesn’t cover weight reduction treatments unless they’re approved and prescribed for one more health condition. Research has shown that covering the drugs could significantly increase costs for employers and state and federal governments.

But the Biden administration proposed a rule in November that will allow Medicare and Medicaid to cover weight-loss medications for patients with obesity. If given the green light by the brand new Trump administration, the rule would significantly expand access to the treatments.

In just a couple of years, brand-name injectable medications comparable to Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound have skyrocketed to fame Billion dollar annual sales for weight reduction in addition to controlling blood sugar levels and reducing the danger of heart disease.

But the worth of those injections is high: they cost about $800-$1,000 per 30 daysand when used alone for weight reduction, they are usually not covered by most insurance firms. Both medications mimic the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1 to control blood sugar and reduce food cravings. They can only be taken with a health care provider's prescription.

The Food and Drug Administration announced an official shortage of energetic ingredients in these drugs in 2022, but on October 2, 2024, the agency announced that this is able to be the case The shortage of the drug tirzepatide has been resolvedthe energetic ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound.

Despite the increasing demand and limited supply of those medications, no generic versions can be found. This is because of the patents for semaglutide – the energetic ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, which remains to be briefly supply – and tirzepatide won’t expire until 2033 and 2036respectively.

As a result, Non-branded alternatives Medicines, available with or with no prescription, flood the market. Still, these products pose real risks for consumers.

I’m a pharmacist Who is investigating weaknesses in federal supervision? recipe and over-the-counter medications And Dietary supplements within the USA My research group recently investigated loopholes which enable alternative products for weight reduction to enter the market.

High demand is driving GLP-1 wannabes newbies

The complement market is attempting to capitalize on GLP-1 demand with pills, teas, extracts and all types of other products claim to provide similar effects just like the brand names at a less expensive price.

Products containing the herb berberine only provide a a couple of kilos of weight reductionwhile many contain weight reduction supplements Stimulants comparable to sibutramine and laxatives comparable to phenolphthaleinthat increase the danger Heart attacks, strokes And Cancer.

Poison control centers have seen a pointy increase in calls related to non-brand weight reduction medications.

The role of compounding pharmacies

Unlike the dietary supplements disguised as GLP-1 weight reduction products, pharmacies that manufacture supplements can produce customized versions of products that contain the identical energetic ingredients as the unique for patients who for some reason are neither branded nor Can use generic products.

These pharmacies may produce alternative versions of brand-name medications when official drug shortages exist.

Because demand for GLP-1 drugs far exceeds supply, compounding pharmacies legally produce a drug Variety of various semaglutide and tirzepatide products.

These products may are available different versions than those offered by brand manufacturers, comparable to vials containing powder that have to be dissolved in liquid, or as tablets or nasal spray.

Just like with brand name medications, you will have a legitimate prescription to acquire one. The prices range from $250 to $400 per 30 days – still a high price for a lot of consumers.

Compounding pharmacies must comply FDA sterility and quality production methodsbut these rules are usually not as strict for compounding pharmacies as they’re for business manufacturers of generic drugs.

In addition, the products that pharmacies produce are manufactured don’t must be tested on humans on safety or effectiveness, as is the case with branded products.

Even with compounded drug forms, getting the proper dosage is usually a challenge.

Companies using the system

For individuals who can't afford a compounded pharmacy product or can't get a legitimate prescription for semaglutide or tirzepatide, opportunistic corporations are stepping in to fill the gap. These include “peptide companies,” manufacturers that produce non-FDA-approved copycat versions of the drugs.

From November 2023 to March 2024, my team conducted a study to evaluate which of those peptide corporations were selling semaglutide or tirzepatide products. We searched the web for these peptide corporations and gathered details about what they sell and what their sales practices are.

We found that peptide sellers a Loophole for the sale of those drugs. On their web sites, the businesses state that their drugs are “for research use only” or “not for human consumption,” but they do nothing to confirm that the buyers are researchers or that the product is meant a research institution goes.

Reading the comment sections on company web sites and targeted ads on social media, it's clear that each buyers and sellers understand the farce. Unlike drug pharmacies, these peptide sellers don’t provide the materials you want to dissolve and inject the drug, don’t provide instructions, and typically don’t answer questions.

Because peptide sellers supposedly don’t sell to consumers, they don’t require a legitimate prescription and sell consumers the quantity of medication they want to buy. Even if an individual has an eating disorder, comparable to: Anorexia nervosaThe corporations are completely satisfied to sell you a semaglutide or tirzepatide product with no prescription. The average prices of those peptide products range from $181 to $203 per 30 days.

Base regulations

Peptide sellers would not have to stick to the principles or regulations that drug manufacturers or compounding pharmacies follow. Many corporations claim that their products are 99% pure, but a independent investigation of three corporations Products from August 2023 to March 2024 revealed that the purity of the products was far lower than promised.

A product contained endotoxin – a toxic substance produced by bacteria – suggesting it was contaminated with microbes. Additionally, the products' promised dosages were reduced by 29 to 39%. Poor purity may cause discomfort to patients Fever, chills, nauseaSkin irritation, infections and low blood pressure.

In this study, some corporations didn't ship the drug in any respect and told buyers they might must pay an extra fee to get the product through customs.

If a consumer is is broken by an inferior productit could be difficult to sue the vendor because the products specifically state that they’re “not intended for human consumption.” Ultimately, consumers are tricked into spending money on products which will never arrive, could cause an infection, may not have the proper dosage, and will not contain instructions on safely use or store the product.

Will prices for branded products fall?

To combat these alternative sellers, pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly began offering an alternate version of his brand name Zepbound Weight loss product in September 2024.

Instead of traditional injection pens, which cost greater than $1,000 a month to provide, this product is available in vials that the patient picks up and injects themselves. For patients taking 5 milligrams of Zepbound each week, the vial products would cost $549 per 30 days if patients purchase it through the corporate's online pharmacy and might prove they would not have insurance coverage for the drug.

After one Grilling on Capitol Hill In September 2024, the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk got here under intense pressure to supply patients without prescription insurance a less expensive product for its brand name Wegovy.

Additional brand-name drugs containing GLP-1 agonists are expected to come back onto the market in the following few years. As of October 2024, a A handful of those products are in late-stage clinical trialswith energetic ingredients comparable to Retatrutid, Survive And Ecnoglutideand greater than 18 other drug candidates are in earlier stages of development.

As latest pharmaceutical corporations enter this market, they have to offer patients lower prices than Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to be able to gain market share. This is the most definitely medium-term solution to scale back the fee of GLP-1 drugs and eliminate drug shortages in the marketplace.

The move can be intended to extend supply of Zepbound within the United States as demand is rapidly increasing, and to be sure that eligible patients can safely access the unique drug as cheaper imitation products turn out to be increasingly common.

The company currently offers single-dose vials of two.5 and 5 milligrams of Zepbound through its website for $399 and $549 per 30 days, respectively. Typically, patients begin treatment with a dose of two.5 milligrams, progressively increasing the quantity, and later taking so-called maintenance doses to take care of weight.

The list prices of Zepbound and other popular weight reduction drugs comparable to Novo NordiskThe cost of the treatments Wegovy offers is about $1,000 a month before insurance and other discounts. These treatments are a part of a blockbuster class of medication called GLP-1, which mimic certain gut hormones to curb an individual's appetite and regulate blood sugar.

Patients must take the medication using a syringe and needle from a Single dose vial — the version of Zepbound Eli Lilly released on Tuesday — and inject yourself. This is different from single dose Auto-injection pensthe currently available type of all Zepbound doses, which patients can inject directly under the skin on the push of a button.

Eli Lilly has said the vials will create additional supply capacities because they’re easier to fabricate than auto-injection pens.

The lower prices will profit patients who’re willing to pay for Zepbound themselves and who’re covered by Medicare or an employer-sponsored medical insurance plan that doesn’t currently cover obesity treatments, Patrik Jonsson, president of Eli Lilly Diabetes and Obesity, said in an interview.

He identified that Medicare beneficiaries are also not eligible for Eli Lilly’s Savings card programs for Zepbound. One program allows individuals with insurance coverage for Zepbound to pay as little as $25 out of pocket, while one other program allows people whose insurance doesn’t cover the drug to pay as little as $550.

Having patients pay directly for single-dose vials of Zepbound “also enables a transparent price by excluding third parties in the supply chain,” the corporate added in a press release.

“There will be no price premiums and we think it is extremely important that consumers have this predictability in terms of pricing,” Jonsson said.

Patients with a legitimate prescription should buy the single-dose vials in a brand new self-pay pharmacy section on the corporate's direct sales site, LillyDirect. Eli Lilly is working with an external digital pharmacy, Gift healthwhich processes prescriptions electronically and packages vials and ships them to eligible patients.

In addition, patients can have the chance to buy syringes and needles on Eli Lilly's website and can have access to materials on learn how to properly administer Zepbound from a vial.

LillyDirect, which launched in January, connects individuals with an independent telemedicine company that may prescribe certain medications if patients are eligible. The site also offers a house delivery option if the prescribed treatment is an Eli Lilly drug, which involves using a third-party online pharmacy to fill prescriptions and send them on to patients.

Eli Lilly said in a press release that distributing the vials through the web site ensures that patients and healthcare providers receive “real” Zepbound. This builds on the corporate's efforts to “help protect the public from the dangers posed by the proliferation of counterfeit, fake, unsafe or untested imitations of Lilly's medicines,” the press release said.

During shortages, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration allows pharmacies to make drugs which can be essentially copies of brand-name drugs. Prescription drugs are customized alternatives to brand-name drugs which can be specifically designed to satisfy the needs of a specific patient.

However, each Zepbound and Eli Lilly's diabetes drug Mounjaro are protected by patents within the United States. The company doesn’t sell the energetic ingredient in these two drugs, tirzepatide, to outside groups.

Eli Lilly has said this raises questions on what some pharmacies and other clinics are selling and marketing to consumers. Both the corporate and its rival Novo Nordisk have cracked down on illegal versions of their weight reduction and diabetes treatments, suing wellness clinics, medical spas and pharmacies across the U.S. over the past 12 months.

The FDA's drug shortage database now lists all doses of Zepbound as available. Still, Jonsson said hundreds of online platforms have popped up prior to now six months offering compounded versions of weight-loss drugs from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly.

“We believe that the U.S. population is actually a target for … untested, unapproved, unregulated anti-obesity drugs that we know do not always contain the active ingredient they are supposed to,” he said. “This is also an opportunity to ensure that consumers in need have access to FDA-approved, quality-tested tirzepatide.”

Eli Lilly reported on Thursday Second quarter results and revenue exceeded all expectations, raising full-year revenue guidance by $3 billion as sales of the hit diabetes drug Mounjaro and weight-loss injection Zepbound soared.

Eli Lilly shares rose greater than 10% in early trading Thursday.

The pharmaceutical manufacturer now expects sales of between $45.4 billion and $46.6 billion for the approaching 12 months, a rise of $3 billion at each end of the range.

The company also raised its adjusted annual earnings to $16.10 to $16.60, in comparison with a previous forecast of $13.50 to $14 per share.

Eli Lilly said the rise in guidance was primarily as a result of strong performance from Mounjaro and Zepbound and partly as a result of “improved clarity” regarding the corporate's manufacturing expansions and planned launch of Mounjaro outside the U.S. The company said it achieved several supply-related milestones in the course of the quarter, but didn’t provide specific details.

Demand far exceeds supply for incretin drugs like Zepbound and Mounjaro. These drugs mimic hormones produced within the gut to suppress appetite and regulate blood sugar. This has forced Eli Lilly and its rival Novo Nordisk to speculate massively to spice up production.

But Eli Lilly's supply shortages may steadily ease. On Friday, the drug database of the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that after an extended period of shortages, all doses of Zepbound and Mounjaro were available again within the USA.

However, the corporate cautioned that the expected increase in demand for certain doses of its incretin drugs may lead to temporary “supply shortages.”

“We're just seeing incredible demand and we're not even trying to promote this drug particularly heavily,” Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks said in an interview with CNBC. “What you're seeing here is just organic consumer demand as we've shipped more product and brought more supply online in the United States.”

Ricks said the corporate has built six manufacturing plants, a few of that are already in operation, and hired hundreds of employees to extend production. Eli Lilly expects production of incretin drugs to be 50% higher within the second half of 2024 than in the identical period last 12 months, he noted.

“We're on track to do that until 2025,” he said. Ricks added that Eli Lilly remains to be developing more convenient weight-loss pills that might help the corporate meet rapidly increasing demand.

Here's what Eli Lilly reported for the second quarter and what Wall Street expected based on an analyst survey conducted by LSEG:

Earnings per share: USD 3.92 adjusted versus USD 2.60 expected

Revenue: 11.30 billion US dollars in comparison with expected 9.92 billion US dollars

The pharmaceutical giant posted net profit of $2.97 billion, or $3.28 per share, for the second quarter. In the identical period last 12 months, profit was $1.76 billion, or $1.95 per share.

Excluding one-time items related to the worth of intangible assets and other adjustments, Eli Lilly reported earnings of $3.92 per share for the second quarter of 2024.

The company reported second-quarter revenue of $11.30 billion, up 36% from the identical period last 12 months.

According to Eli Lilly, sales were primarily as a result of increased demand for Mounjaro and Zepbound as production increases improved supply within the United States.

It is Zepbound's second full quarter within the U.S. market after receiving regulatory approval in November. The weekly money injection brought in revenue of $1.24 billion for the period, well above the $922.2 million expected by analysts, in keeping with StreetAccount.

Meanwhile, Mounjaro posted second-quarter revenue of $3.09 billion, greater than triple the revenue of the identical period last 12 months. Analysts had expected revenue of $2.39 billion, in keeping with StreetAccount.

Prices for Mounjaro were higher within the U.S. within the second quarter, partly as a result of increased access to the drug and lower use of savings card programs in comparison with the identical period last 12 months.

However, the corporate said savings cards are expected to have “only a minimal effect” on actual price comparisons within the second half of the 12 months since the $25 monthly coupon for patients without insurance coverage for Mounjaro expired in June.

Ricks said prices for Eli Lilly's incretin drugs were “fairly stable” within the second quarter.

The situation is different for Novo Nordisk, which on Wednesday reported weaker-than-expected second-quarter sales of its weight-loss drug Wegovy and the diabetes injection Ozempic, partly as a result of price pressure.

Wegovy's revenue was hit by higher-than-expected price concessions to U.S. pharmacy profit managers, who negotiate drug discounts with manufacturers on behalf of insurers, Novo Nordisk executives said Wednesday during a quarterly earnings conference call.

Eli Lilly shares have risen greater than 30% this 12 months after rising nearly 60% in 2023, because of rising demand for the corporate's weight-loss and diabetes drugs — and increased investor interest of their potential as treatments for other health conditions. That popularity comes despite their high monthly prices, inconsistent insurance coverage and intermittent supply shortages.

With a market capitalization of over $730 billion, Eli Lilly is the biggest pharmaceutical company based within the United States

“I think we plan to finish this process today or tomorrow,” he told the outlet in an interview.

The results provide further evidence that Zepbound and other popular GLP-1 drugs offer health advantages beyond promoting weight reduction and regulating blood sugar levels, potentially resulting in broader coverage of those treatments by health insurers.

Eli Lilly announced that the corporate will present the outcomes of the Phase 3 trial to U.S. regulators and other authorities later this 12 months.

Eli Lilly shares rose greater than 3% in morning trading Thursday.

Patients taking Zepbound were 38% less prone to be hospitalized or die from heart complications and were less prone to need a dose increase. The study found that patients who received a placebo were more compliant with their heart failure medications than those that received a placebo. Zepbound also significantly improved heart failure symptoms and physical limitations, Eli Lilly said in a press release.

On average, the study followed greater than 700 patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and obesity for 2 years. Some patients also suffered from diabetes.

In HFpEF, the center is not any longer in a position to pump enough blood to satisfy the body's needs. Eli Lilly said the condition is related to a “high burden” of symptoms and physical limitations that affect the patient's every day life, including fatigue, shortness of breath and reduced physical performance, to call just a few.

About 6.7 million adults ages 20 and older within the United States suffer from heart failure, in response to the latest estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Eli Lilly estimates that HFpEF accounts for nearly half of all heart failure cases, and within the United States, nearly 60% of affected patients also suffer from obesity.

The safety data for Zepbound were consistent with previous studies evaluating the drug. The most typical uncomfortable side effects were gastrointestinal in nature, akin to nausea and diarrhea, and were mild to moderate in severity.

Eli Lilly will present the info at an upcoming medical meeting and submit them to a peer-reviewed journal.

The pharmaceutical giant's essential competitor within the GLP-1 market, Novo Nordisk, is already one step ahead.

Novo Nordisk submitted an application earlier this 12 months for the usage of its weight-loss drug Wegovy to treat patients with HFpEF. The Food and Drug Administration also gave Wegovy the green light in March since it dramatically reduces the chance of significant heart complications.

Meanwhile, each Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have tested their respective drugs on patients with chronic kidney disease and fatty liver disease, in addition to other diseases. GLP-1s work by mimicking hormones produced within the gut to suppress an individual's appetite and regulate their blood sugar.

But Zepbound targets each the GLP-1 and GIP hormone receptors, while Wegovy only targets GLP-1.
