<p>When we first pointed our microscope on the soil sample, bits of organic material appeared: a tiny poppy seed, the compound eye of an insect, broken willow twigs, and spores of moss. Our field of view was dominated by dark-colored spheres produced by soil fungi. </p>
<p>These were clearly the <a href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2407465121">Remains of an Arctic tundra ecosystem</a> – and proof that every one of Greenland’s ice disappeared before previously thought. </p>
<p>These tiny hints of past life got here from a impossible place – a handful of soil buried under 3 kilometers of ice beneath the summit of the Greenland ice sheet. Predictions concerning the future melting of the ice sheet are clear: When the ice on the summit is gone, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/nature20146">a minimum of 90%</a> of the Greenland ice can have melted. </p>

<p>In 1993, drillers on the summit accomplished the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) ice core, nicknamed <a href="https://press.princeton.edu/books/paperback/9780691160832/the-two-mile-time-machine">Two-mile time machine</a>The seeds, twigs and spores we found got here from just a few centimeters of soil at the underside of this core – soil that had been untouched and dry for 3 many years in a windowless <a href="https://icecores.org">Storage facility in Colorado</a>.</p>
<p>Our latest evaluation builds on the work of others over the past decade <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/540202a">undermine faith</a> that Greenland&#39;s ice sheet had been constantly present for a minimum of 2.6 million years, when the Pleistocene ice ages began. In 2016, scientists measuring rare isotopes in rocks above and below the GISP2 soil sample used models that suggested the ice had disappeared a minimum of once. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/nature20146">throughout the last 1.1 million years</a>. </p>
<p>By discovering well-preserved tundra remnants, we were now able to substantiate that the Greenland ice sheet had indeed melted earlier and exposed the land below the summit for long enough. <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1249047">in order that soil forms</a> and that tundra is growing there. This shows us that the ice cover is fragile and will melt again.</p>

<h2>A landscape with arctic poppies and spike moss</h2>
<p>To the naked eye, the tiny bits of past life are unremarkable &#8211; dark specks floating amongst shiny grains of mud and sand. But under the microscope, the story they tell is astonishing. Together, the seeds, megaspores and bug parts paint an image of a chilly, dry and rocky environment that existed sometime within the last million years.</p>
<p>Above ground, arctic poppies grew among the many rocks. Each stem of this small but tough herb had a single cup-shaped flower on it, following the sun across the sky to benefit from the daylight.</p>

<p>In the rocky soil were dark balls called sclerotia, produced by fungi that team up with the roots of plants within the soil to assist each get the nutrients they need. Nearby, willow bushes have adapted to life in the cruel tundra with their small size and the downy hairs that cover their stems. </p>

<p>Each of those creatures left traces on this handful of soil – evidence that tells us that Greenland’s ice was once replaced by a resilient tundra ecosystem.</p>
<h2>Greenland’s ice is fragile</h2>
<p>Our discoveries, published on August 5, 2024, in <a href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2407465121">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>show that Greenland&#39;s ice melts easily at lower atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations than today. Concerns about this threat have prompted scientists to review the ice sheet. <a href="https://wwnorton.com/books/9781324020677">for the reason that Nineteen Fifties</a>. </p>
<p>In the Nineteen Sixties, a team of engineers took the world’s first deep ice core at <a href="https://blogs.egu.eu/divisions/cr/2022/01/28/camp-century-bottom-ice/">Camp Century</a>a nuclear-powered army base built into the ice sheet, over 100 miles from the northwest coast of Greenland. They studied the ice, but that they had little use for the rocks and soil they delivered to the surface with the underside of the core. These were stored after which lost until they were discovered in 2019. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/science.366.6465.556">rediscovered in a laboratory freezer</a>. Our team was among the many scientists called upon to conduct the evaluation. </p>

<p>In the soil of Camp Century we also found plant and bug stays that were frozen under the ice. <p>Another ice core, DYE-3 from southern Greenland, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/science.1141758">contained DNA</a> This shows that this a part of the island was covered with spruce forests sooner or later within the last million years.</p>
<p>The biological evidence is compelling evidence of the fragility of the Greenland ice sheet. Taken together, the outcomes from three ice cores can only mean one thing: excluding just a few mountainous regions within the east, ice should have melted on your complete island over the past million years. </p>
<h2>The lack of ice cover</h2>
<p>If the Greenland ice disappears, the geography of the world will change – and that may be a problem for humanity. </p>
<p>As the ice sheet melts, sea levels will eventually rise by greater than 7 meters, and <a href="https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2017/11/world/greenland-global-warning/">Coastal cities are flooded</a>Most of Miami will likely be underwater, as will large parts of Boston, New York, Mumbai and Jakarta. </p>

<p>Today, sea levels are rising by <a href="https://sealevel.nasa.gov/faq/8/is-the-rate-of-sea-level-rise-increasing/">multiple inch per decade</a>and in some places even several times faster. By 2100, when today&#39;s children are grandparents, sea levels worldwide will probably be several meters higher.</p>
<h2>Using the past to grasp the longer term</h2>
<p>Rapid ice loss is changing the Arctic. Data on past ecosystems, like those we&#8217;ve got collected beneath the Greenland ice, are helping scientists understand how the Arctic ecology will change because the climate warms.</p>
<p>As temperatures rise, sensible white snow melts and ice shrinks, exposing dark rock and soil that absorbs the sun&#39;s warmth. The Arctic is <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/missions/landsat/warming-temperatures-are-driving-arctic-greening/">turn out to be greener</a> With each passing 12 months, the underlying permafrost thaws and more carbon is released, causing the planet to warm further.</p>

<p>Human-induced climate change is anticipated to warm the Arctic and Greenland to temperatures not seen there for tens of millions of years. <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/sixth-assessment-report-cycle/">To save Greenland’s ice</a>Studies show that the world must stop greenhouse gas emissions from its energy systems and <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/293190702_Consequences_of_Twenty-First-Century_Policy_for_Multi-Millennial_Climate_and_Sea-Level_Change">Reduce carbon dioxide levels</a> within the atmosphere.</p>
<p>To assess future risks to the ice sheet and coastal communities worldwide, it&#8217;s critical to grasp the environmental conditions that led to the last ice sheet disappearance and the way life in Greenland responded.</p>

<p>After 16 years on Lincoln Avenue, owner Carole Demkowski is closing the Three Sisters boutique in Willow Glen at the top of this month after her rent greater than doubled.</p>
<p>&#8220;Everyone is demoralized,&#8221; Demkowski said of her regular customers&#39; response to the news. &#8220;It seems as if all the small mom-and-pop shops are gradually closing.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the narrow space off Minnesota Avenue that was once an alley, shoppers could browse an eclectic collection of chandeliers, lamps, jewelry, decanters and glassware — not to say the favored Willow Glen Honey, made by her husband, beekeeper Steve Demkowski.</p>

<p>Three Sisters in Willow Glen&#39;s last day of business is July 31, but Demkowski said this weekend is the last hurrah day for patrons searching for deals. Starting Monday, she&#39;ll start packing up her belongings in preparation for moving out.</p>
<p>But Demkowski also has a comeback plan. As early as the primary weekend in September, she is going to open a store at Montebello Road, the antiques department store on Bascom Avenue in Campbell, to sell her items. And she&#39;s also planning some impromptu events in Willow Glen in the course of the holiday season, when shoppers are searching for gifts.</p>
<p>Part of the issue, she acknowledges, is a general trend toward brick-and-mortar retail stores. Online shopping is eating into business, however the Valley&#39;s younger generation &#8212; who may not have as much space as their parents &#8212; has a unique sensibility relating to spending their disposable income.</p>
<p>&#8220;They don&#39;t want material things. They want experiences,&#8221; she said. The revitalization of Lincoln Avenue over the past twenty years has definitely brought recent restaurants and shopping, with established establishments like Hicklebee&#39;s, the Thrift Box, Willow Glen Collective and Bertucelli&#39;s La Villa still retaining their old-fashioned charm.</p>
<p><strong>FANTASTIC DEBUT:</strong> Jim Angelopoulos couldn&#39;t imagine how many individuals showed up Friday for a free burger and fries at Campus Burgers, the brand new downtown San Jose restaurant opened by the owner of popular breakfast spot Scrambl&#39;z. People were already lined up on Paseo de San Antonio greater than an hour before Campus Burgers opened, and Angelopoulos said he hoped his kitchen staff could handle the surge. &#8220;I never expected anything like this,&#8221; he said.</p>

<p>San Jose City Councilman Omar Torres stopped by to congratulate the owners — and grab an early lunch — and credited the tremendous response to the San Jose Foos social media account. Torres said he expects Campus Burgers to do good business, especially when classes start at nearby San Jose State in August. Incidentally, the regular price for considered one of Campus Burgers&#39; 2-ounce &#8220;smashburgers&#8221; is $1.99 — not free, but still an excellent deal lately — with higher prices for cheese, extra patties and fries.</p>
<p><strong>PARTY CALENDAR:</strong> It looks like Sunday, August 18th, will probably be an excellent day in Saratoga for several good causes. Cancer CAREpoint has already sold out its annual fundraising garden party on the Montalvo Arts Center that evening, with dinner provided by Le Papillion.</p>
<p><strong>JAZZ CATS:</strong> The Jazz on the Plazz concert series continues to fill the Los Gatos Town Plaza with music every Wednesday, with the good Nicolas Bearde joining the Full Spectrum Jazz Band on July 31. However, there was a change within the series&#39; upcoming schedule, as Ricardo Lemvo has canceled his August 14 performance attributable to a scheduling conflict. Salsa group Bembé will perform as an alternative.</p>
<p>And Los Gatos Music and Arts has announced that sensational multi-instrumentalist Gunhild Carling – who performed on the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest a number of years ago – will perform at this 12 months&#39;s gala on Sept. 22 on the Hotel Los Gatos. Tickets for the flowery event, which is able to feature snacks and drinks provided by Dio Deka, are $225 each. <p><strong>A glance into the past:</strong> Some readers probably did a double-take after they read a New York Times election report quoting San Jose resident Anna Ayala, a Democrat who said she would vote for Donald Trump in the autumn. If that name sounds familiar, it&#39;s because Ayala was the girl at the middle of a fraudulent 2005 lawsuit wherein she falsely claimed to have found a human finger in a bowl of fast-food chili.</p>
<p>Ayala served 4 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted grand larceny. The New York Times later removed Ayala&#39;s quote from the article after learning about her past. I also doubt the Trump campaign will use her in any ads.</p>

<p>The fast-growing West Coast sourdough chain has opened its first sandwich shop in San Jose, and renovations are underway for a location within the Willow Glen neighborhood.</p>
<p>For its first foray into the South Bay, the corporate selected a location within the San Jose Market Center on Coleman Avenue.</p>
<p>In Willow Glen, the previous Old Republic Title Co. space on Meridian Avenue next to Starbucks is being converted right into a sandwich shop.  No estimated opening date has been announced.</p>
<p>The warm rolls have a crispy outside and a soft inside.  So far, the chicken and turkey French dip and pesto creations have been popular at the brand new Coleman shop.</p>
<p>In addition to the sandwiches, there are side dishes that customers can order in cup, bowl or bread tray sizes.  Clam chowder, tomato bisque and mac &#038; cheese (white cheddar, parmesan) can be found each day.  Rotating soups include chicken and poblano pepper (Monday and Friday);  vegan-friendly Fire Roasted Vegetables (Tuesday);  Chicken Noodles (Wednesday);  Cream of potatoes with bacon (Thursday and Sunday);  and broccoli cream (Saturday).</p>
<p>The five salad options are Caesar, Cobb, Greek, Italian and Southwest Chicken.</p>
<p>Founded in 2020, West Coast Sourdough already has about 40 locations within the Central Valley, from Bakersfield north to Chico, in addition to Bay Area stores in Walnut Creek, Fremont and Rohnert Park.  Several more are within the works across California.</p>
