<p>This 30-minute vegetarian soup is a straightforward, healthy dinner. It&#39;s a welcome time-out meal stuffed with nutritious ingredients and warming on a cool autumn evening. Inspired by the Southwest with the spiciness of sweet potato, cumin and chili, it&#39;s based on robust, protein-rich lentils for strength and body.</p>
<p>The soup will be prepared quickly, which suggests that the consistency of the ingredients is maintained. The vegetables are simply cooked al dente and the lentils are cooked until they&#8217;re soft without turning into mush. Pulled kale leaves are tossed into the soup just before serving, giving them barely enough time to melt and brighten without dulling the colour or flavor.</p>

<p>1 teaspoon kosher salt, or more to taste</p>
<p>2 large plum tomatoes, roughly chopped</p>
<p>1 cup brown lentils, rinsed</p>
<p>1 large garlic clove, minced</p>
<p>1 teaspoon ground cumin</p>
<p>1 teaspoon sweet paprika</p>
<p>1/2 teaspoon dried thyme</p>
<p>1 bay leaf</p>
<p>4 cups vegetable broth (or chicken broth, for non-vegetarian option)</p>
<p>1/3 cup full-bodied red wine</p>
<p>2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar</p>
<p>1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper</p>
<p>2 cups torn Tuscan or green kale leaves</p>

<p>Heat the oil in a big pot over medium heat. Add onion, sweet potato, bell pepper and carrot and season with salt. Sauté for two to three minutes to coat the vegetables and lighten their color.</p>
<p>Stir within the tomatoes, lentils, garlic, cumin, paprika, thyme and bay leaf and cook for about 2 minutes more to toast the lentils and spices.</p>
<p>Add broth and wine. There needs to be enough liquid to generously cover the vegetables. If not, add more broth or water.</p>
<p>Bring the soup to a boil and cook over medium-low heat, partially covered, until the vegetables and lentils are tender but not mushy, about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the soup is just too thick, thin it with additional broth or water. Stir in balsamic vinegar and black pepper and taste for seasoning. Add more salt if crucial.</p>
<p>Before serving, stir within the kale leaves and simmer until light in color and wilted, about 1 minute. Pour into bowls and serve immediately.</p>

<p>Most Americans will remember 2020 because the 12 months the pandemic modified every little thing. But for Lake Charles, Louisiana, and its neighbors along the Gulf Coast, it was also the 12 months of <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/stories/record-number-of-billion-dollar-disasters-struck-us-in-2020">Record disasters</a>when “unique” storms occurred in such rapid succession that their effects overlapped.</p>
<p>A recent National Academies consensus study, on which I participated, examined <a href="https://doi.org/10.17226/27170">the increasing disasters facing the region</a> – each physically and socioeconomically – because the pandemic brought storm after storm with little time for recovery.</p>
<p>The study concludes that Lake Charles&#39; experience could also be a harbinger of what lies ahead in a warming world unless the country fundamentally rethinks its disaster preparedness, response and recovery strategies.</p>
<h2>Disasters in Lake Charles are increasing</h2>
<p>Hurricane Laura made landfall near Lake Charles on August 27, 2020. <a href="https://appliedsciences.nasa.gov/what-we-do/disasters/disasters-activations/hurricane-laura-2020">strong Category 4 storm</a>with wind speeds exceeding those local constructing codes were designed to guard against. The ongoing pandemic made it difficult to submit assistance applications and insurance claims to FEMA. Assessors could only view properties remotely, and on-site application assistance was suspended, forcing residents to depend on untested online systems.</p>
<p>While the community was still struggling to document its losses itself, Lake Charles was hit again five weeks later by <a href="https://www.weather.gov/lch/2020Delta">Hurricane Delta</a>The storm lashed already damaged buildings and sent debris flying, causing further damage and creating complex damage scenarios. </p>
<p>It was almost unattainable to differentiate latest damage from existing damage that had been made worse by the last storm. <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2024/01/19/fema-changes-disaster-victims-climate/">Delayed recovery assistance</a> The municipalities lacked the resources to finance further debris removal.</p>

<p>Then February 2021 brought a deep freeze to homes that had not yet been repaired, causing pipes to burst and much more water damage from inside. Tarps protecting the damaged roofs frayed, allowing much more water to seep in from above. More and more debris piled up along the streets.</p>
<p>When <a href="https://www.americanpress.com/2022/01/01/top-10-stories-of-2021-water-inundates-lake-charles/">Record rainfall</a> In May 2021, stormwater systems clogged with debris were overwhelmed. Floodwaters inundated properties, triggering one other wave of harm in an already overstretched claims and relief system. Uninsured losses increased as flooding reached areas that weren&#8217;t expected to flood under &#8220;normal&#8221; circumstances and subsequently didn&#8217;t have to carry flood insurance.</p>
<p>This is what a deepening disaster looks like. The mounting economic damage left many homes unrepaired. Damaged rental properties were quickly taken over by buyout programs or suddenly sold. <a href="https://housingmatters.urban.org/research-summary/what-happens-housing-costs-after-hurricane?&#038;utm_source=%20urban_newsletters&#038;utm_medium=news-HHM&#038;utm_term=HHM">lucrative housing markets</a>. <a href="https://www.wwno.org/coastal-desk/2023-08-11/as-the-peak-of-hurricane-season-nears-lake-charles-is-still-recovering-from-2020-storms">Lake Charles housing market recovery lags behind</a> til today.</p>

<p>The events in Lake Charles in 2020 and 2021 highlight a very important truth: The only solution to avoid worsening disasters is to shorten the recovery time after each storm.</p>
<p>This is a difficult prospect with <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41558-023-01595-7">Storms occur more continuously</a> because of climate change. As lead engineer of the study team, I consider it should be needed to prioritize housing resilience, create more flexible support systems, and construct adaptive capability that may handle novel storm scenarios.</p>
<h2>1. Build resilient homes</h2>
<p>The best solution to shorten recovery time is to avoid the necessity for recovery altogether. That starts with constructing homes that may withstand extreme storms.</p>
<p>Unlike other critical infrastructures, that are strictly regulated, housing construction is subject to the private decisions of the owners, who <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s10584-019-02513-7">little or no information</a> concerning the vulnerability of their homes. It is subsequently not surprising that they <a href="https://doi.org/10.1080/14693062.2023.2215207">not realize</a> how break-ins through windows or garage doors could spread and destroy your property.</p>
<p>Worse, the old buildings usually are not required to fulfill the newest constructing codes, leaving the country&#39;s aging housing stock particularly vulnerable to worsening disasters.</p>
<p>States could introduce and implement improved constructing standards, but <a href="https://ibhs.org/public-policy/rating-the-states/">There is a scarcity of political will</a> in lots of Gulf Coast states. In addition to developers’ concerns about rising construction costs, the reform of constructing codes <a href="https://www.wral.com/story/some-concerned-building-code-freeze-could-leave-new-builds-in-nc-decades-out-of-date/21014568/">politicized</a>.</p>

<h2>2. Recognize that one size not suits all</h2>
<p>The housing recovery in Lake Charles has been particularly hampered by the rigidity of the country&#39;s current disaster relief apparatus, which views each disaster as a single event handled through a standardized and sometimes restrictive process. This has led to <a href="https://www.theadvocate.com/lake_charles/laura-survivors-finally-get-help-but-some-of-the-most-vulnerable-are-left-behind/article_5e4aad36-a949-11ed-a5ec-6796b8a6d82b.html">significant delays and denial of assistance</a> through the escalating disasters of 2020 and 2021.</p>

<p>But the deadliest immediate impact is just the warmth itself. It attacks human health at every level and already claims more lives every year than all other natural disasters combined. The problem is so large and so insidious that we don&#8217;t yet fully understand its extent.</p>
<p>The greater than 2,300 heat-related deaths within the United States last yr were just those by which heat played an obvious role. A 2020 study by researchers at Brown University, Boston University and the University of Toronto suggests the true number could also be greater than twice that. The variety of uncounted heat deaths worldwide could approach half 1,000,000 annually.</p>
<h4 class="">Protection for vulnerable people</h4>

Combined with the Federal Emergency Management Agency&#39;s bizarre reluctance to contemplate heat waves as natural disasters, these are failures Congress must fix.</p>
<p>If the Earth&#39;s atmosphere suddenly contained a colorless, odorless gas that never went away and killed and sickened tens of millions of individuals yearly, we might consider this a health emergency on the size of a pandemic and possibly dedicate the whole society to fighting the colorless, odorless gas. <p>Understanding the role of the ocean within the economy is something <a href="https://www.middlebury.edu/institute/people/charles-colgan">I work on</a> for greater than 40 years, currently at <a href="https://www.middlebury.edu/institute/academics/centers-initiatives/center-blue-economy">Center for the Blue Economy</a> from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. Mostly I study the positive contributions of the ocean, but that has began to vary, sometimes dramatically. Climate change has made the ocean a threat to the economy in some ways.</p>
<h2>The dangers of sea level rise</h2>
<p>One of the most important threats to the economy from ocean warming is rising sea levels. <a href="https://youtu.be/Z7uuhLkDTGw?feature=shared">Water heats up, it expands</a>. Together with the meltwater from glaciers and ice sheets, the thermal expansion of the water has led to increased flooding in low-lying coastal areas and <a href="https://carnegieendowment.org/2023/11/29/why-climate-change-is-especially-dire-for-islands-pub-91125">the longer term of the island states</a> at risk.</p>
<p>In the USA, rising sea levels will soon overwhelm <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/sea-level-rise-drove-native-community-isle-de/story?id=98479346">Jean Charles Island</a> in Louisiana and <a href="https://grist.org/climate/what-a-tiny-island-in-chesapeake-bay-teaches-us-about-the-costs-of-sea-level-rise/">Tangier Island within the Chesapeake Bay</a>. </p>
<p>Flooding at high tide, even on sunny days, is becoming more common, for instance in <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/environment/climate-change/article281202298.html">Miami Beach</a>; <a href="https://www.annapolis.gov/312/Floods">Annapolis, Maryland</a>; <a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/News-Stories/Article/Article/2703096/dod-navy-confront-climate-change-challenges-in-southern-virginia/">Norfolk, Virginia</a>; and San Francisco. Flooding has greater than doubled since 2000 and is <a href="https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-matters/rising-seas-flooding-coasts-2023">on the approach to tripling</a> by 2050 along the country&#39;s coasts.</p>

<p>Rising sea levels are also pushing saltwater into freshwater aquifers, that are used to supply water for agriculture. The strawberry harvest in coastal California is <a href="https://www.producebluebook.com/2023/12/14/beyond-drought-the-salinas-valley/">already affected</a>. </p>
<p>These impacts are still small and localized. Much greater impacts are related to storms which might be amplified by rising sea levels.</p>
<h2>Higher sea levels can worsen storm damage</h2>

<p>Tropical cyclones caused <a href="https://coast.noaa.gov/states/fast-facts/hurricane-costs.html">greater than $1.3 trillion in damage</a> within the United States from 1980 to 2023, with a median cost of $22.8 billion per storm. Much of this cost was borne by taxpayers.</p>
<p>It&#39;s not only tropical storms. Maine saw what can occur when a winter storm in January 2024 created tides <a href="https://wgme.com/news/local/portland-shatters-1978-high-tide-record-coast-flooding-rain-maine-coastal-wind-winter-severe-storm">5 feet above normal</a> which filled the coastal roads with sea water.</p>

<p>What does this mean for the economy?</p>
<p>The potential future economic damage from sea level rise is unknown since the pace and magnitude of sea level rise are unknown. </p>
<p>According to at least one estimate, the prices of sea level rise and storm surges alone can be over $990 billion this century. Adaptation measures could only reduce these costs by <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s10584-014-1304-z">100 billion US dollars</a>These estimates include direct property damage and damage to infrastructure akin to transport, water systems and ports. They don&#8217;t include impacts on agriculture as a result of the intrusion of saline water into aquifers, <a href="https://deeply.thenewhumanitarian.org/water/community/2018/05/14/seawater-intrusion-threatens-some-of-californias-richest-farmland">Agriculture</a>.</p>
<h2>Heatwaves within the sea cause difficulties for fisheries</h2>
<p>Rising sea temperatures also affect marine life by causing extreme events called marine heatwaves and more gradual, longer-term temperature fluctuations.</p>
<p>In spring 2024, one third of the worldwide oceans <a href="https://psl.noaa.gov/marine-heatwaves/#report">Experience heat waves</a>Corals fight through their <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/noaa-confirms-4th-global-coral-bleaching-event">fourth global bleaching event</a> in records, as warm ocean temperatures cause them to expel the algae that live of their shells and provides the corals color and food. While corals sometimes get better from bleaching, akin to <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.oneear.2021.08.016">Half of the world&#39;s coral reefs have died</a> since 1950, and their <a href="https://new.nsf.gov/news/coral-reefs-tropical-pacific-could-survive-2060s">The future after the center of this century is bleak</a>.</p>

<p>The lack of coral reefs is greater than just their beauty. Coral reefs function breeding grounds and feeding grounds <a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/tutorial_corals/coral07_importance.html">for hundreds of fish species</a>According to NOAA estimates, about half of all <a href="https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/insight/understanding-fisheries-management-united-states">federally managed fisheries</a>including snappers and groupers, rely upon reefs sooner or later of their life cycle.</p>
<p>Warmer waters cause fish to migrate to cooler areas. This is particularly evident in cold-water-loving species akin to lobsters, that are steadily moving north to flee warming seas. The once robust lobster fishery in southern New England is <a href="https://gmri.org/stories/new-study-warming-conservation-and-lobsters">decreased significantly</a>.</p>

<p>In the Gulf of Alaska, rising temperatures have nearly worn out snow crabs and shut down a $270 million fishery. <a href="https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/podcast/what-happened-all-alaska-snow-crabs">completely closed for 2 years</a>A serious heat wave <a href="https://nca2023.globalchange.gov/chapter/10/">off the Pacific coast</a> spanned several years within the 2010s and affected fisheries between Alaska and Oregon.</p>
<h2>That is not going to change anytime soon</h2>
<p>The gathered ocean heat and greenhouse gases within the atmosphere are <a href="https://nca2023.globalchange.gov/chapter/2/">influence sea temperatures for hundreds of years</a>even when countries reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 as hoped. So while the oceans <a href="https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-ocean-heat-content">Temperatures vary from 12 months to 12 months</a>The overall trend is prone to proceed for at the least one other century.</p>
<p>There isn&#8217;t any cold water tap we are able to simply activate to quickly bring ocean temperatures back to “normal,” so communities might want to adapt while all the planet works to slow greenhouse gas emissions to secure the ocean economy for the longer term.</p>

<p>Preparing for the Atlantic hurricane season is all the time a top priority within the Caribbean, especially when forecasts predict a high variety of storms, as is the case for 2024. The most devastating storm within the region in recent times, <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/AL152017_Maria.pdf">Hurricane Maria</a>struck in September 2017, causing unprecedented destruction in Puerto Rico, Dominica, St. Croix and other islands.  </p>
<p>Maria killed over 3,000 people and <a href="https://caribbean.loopnews.com/content/five-most-destructive-hurricanes-last-decade">caused damage of about 96 billion US dollars</a>It destroyed Puerto Rico’s power grid and left 1.5 million customers without power <a href="https://www.nrel.gov/news/features/2024/puerto-rico-can-reach-its-100-renewable-energy-goal-by-2050.html">as much as 328 days</a> – the longest power outage in U.S. history. These outages had cascading effects on other infrastructure, corresponding to water and communications systems.  </p>
<p>Today, the Caribbean is facing latest climate-related challenges. Due to the accelerated warming of the oceans, prolonged extreme heat and humid days have gotten more frequent. </p>
<p>In response to those increasingly frequent and extreme weather events, I joined forces with a dozen other researchers in 2023 to review the <a href="https://ccan-upr.org/">Caribbean Climate Adaptation Network</a>Our goal is to attach scientists with communities and government agencies within the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico and supply scientific information that might help them prepare for and reply to emerging climate extremes. </p>
<p>I&#8217;m a <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=EZCV8KUAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Coastal Urban Climatologist</a> and a native of Puerto Rican. The creation of this network has been extremely necessary to me personally. I hope it is going to solidify our existing partnerships for longer-term collaboration between leading academic researchers, vulnerable communities, government agencies and utilities on the islands and function a platform to succeed in out to the whole Caribbean.  </p>
<p>Our mission is to develop latest ways to view the coastal and concrete environment as a unified system &#8211; one which puts people at the middle and integrates human-made systems like buildings and infrastructure with natural systems just like the atmosphere, ecosystems, and oceans. All of those elements face the challenge of climate change. We wish to support vulnerable communities by conducting research that could make them more resilient to climate change and convey them to the table so we will create higher solutions together.  </p>

<h2>Lessons from Puerto Rico’s recovery</h2>
<p>Puerto Rico has made its power grid more resilient within the years since Hurricane Maria, but challenges remain. Over 1 million customers on the island have experienced intermittent outages for the reason that hurricane. In September 2022 <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/AL072022_Fiona.pdf">Hurricane Fiona</a> – a much weaker Category 1 storm – hit Puerto Rico, causing an influence outage across the island. </p>
<p>Puerto Rico&#39;s power grid is fragile, largely due to aging infrastructure and the island&#39;s regular exposure to extreme weather events attributable to global warming. Nevertheless, local utilities have made significant progress in stabilizing a really complex power grid in any respect points. <a href="https://pr100.gov/">From production to distribution</a>The generation of solar energy – especially from small rooftop systems that may supply individual households and businesses with electricity during power outages – is <a href="https://www.woodmac.com/news/tiny-drops-create-mighty-oceans-how-distributed-solar-keeps-the-puerto-rico-grid-afloat/">play a very important role</a> to make the system more resilient. </p>

<p>In 2023, I led a bunch of researchers in reconstructing the impacts of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico. We used a mix of geophysical models, engineering models of the facility and water grids, reviews of injury reports, and socioeconomic information to indicate how proposed hurricane preparedness strategies <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41560-023-01315-7">would affect low-income communities</a>. </p>
<p>We have learned that essentially the most effective technique to protect all community members is to strengthen the transmission grid in order that it may possibly withstand future impacts from events like Hurricane Maria. This will likely require latest transmission towers that may withstand extremely high winds and soil saturation. It could also include limiting exposure through measures corresponding to burying power lines. We haven&#8217;t studied the prices of those solutions, but presumably they&#8217;d be very high.  </p>
<p>Since then, we now have partnered again to reconstruct other major weather events in Puerto Rico and collect latest data, specializing in resilient electricity infrastructure and climate change adaptation. For this work, we install unique sensors on power poles and contours while observing the natural conditions around these transmission assets. These devices repeatedly measure the mechanical stress on the poles and the power of the transmission lines to handle the facility load under various weather and demand conditions, including extreme weather events.</p>
<p>By reconstructing past storms, collecting latest data on the state of Puerto Rico&#39;s infrastructure, and using machine learning algorithms, we plan to develop latest frameworks for predictive models to anticipate the chance of power transmission system disruptions during extreme weather events.  </p>
<h2>Inform regional measures</h2>
<p>In recent years, our research group has used satellite observations to find out that Caribbean sea surface temperatures are increasing by nearly 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit (0.5 degrees Celsius) per decade – a few of the <a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/atmos14060999">fastest ocean warming on earth</a>This trend has a direct impact on the chance of more frequent and intense hurricanes. </p>
<p>It also affects ambient temperatures on land, resulting in extreme heat conditions. In the summer of 2023, town of San Juan experienced a sustained heat wave with heat indices above 38 °C. This level is taken into account unhealthy for most individuals. </p>
<p>Heat warnings and record temperatures forced the federal government to do all the pieces it could to guard students. Public schools took the unprecedented step of <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/puerto-rico-schools-cancel-excessive-heat-no-air-conditioning-rcna103923">Classes cancelled across the island</a>This event highlighted the importance of monitoring the state of the Caribbean Ocean and anticipating its impacts on people, infrastructure and ecosystems.  </p>

<p>My colleagues on the Caribbean Climate Adaptation Network and I imagine our findings are transferable to other Caribbean communities. Our work may profit coastal areas within the Americas, where critical infrastructure is extremely exposed and storms often hit essentially the most vulnerable people hardest. </p>
<p>We hope our work with communities will result in broader education and latest actionable science that may guide climate change adaptation decisions and risk mitigation investments. Specifically, we aim to develop strategies to make island infrastructure significantly more resilient and adaptive, in addition to safeguards to guard communities and maintain a way of normalcy in a warmer climate.</p>

<p>The flight deck of a decommissioned World War II-era aircraft carrier docked in Alameda recently began launching something apart from airplanes: microscopic saltwater droplets that scientists hope will help counteract the consequences of climate change .</p>
<p>A team of atmospheric scientists from the University of Washington teamed up with the Silicon Valley-based Stanford Research Institute, an independent nonprofit research organization, and SilverLining, a nonprofit focused on near-term climate risks, to review whether adding saltwater plumes This causes a cloud to be more reflective and stop excess heat from reaching the Earth&#39;s surface.</p>
<p>Cloud brightening is an idea first proposed by British scientist John Latham in 1990.  After years of dialogue and experimentation, the University of Washington&#39;s privately funded effort to place Latham&#39;s idea to the test is now ready for testing outside of a lab.</p>
<p>The Marine Cloud Brightening Program is predicated on the USS Hornet, where scientists will spend the following few months testing equipment and constructing computer models to see if their laboratory results might be reproduced in real atmospheric conditions.  The program&#39;s official launch on Wednesday brought together scientists from all over the world to debate the brand new technology and think about the test setup.</p>
<p>“This project is a truly unique collaboration,” said Kelly Wanser, managing director of SilverLining, throughout the program’s launch event.</p>
<p>The Hornet, an 80-year-old aircraft carrier that has now been converted right into a museum, was chosen as the positioning for the tests.  Wanser said she was “blown away by the combination of science, history and technology [and] human innovation” on the ship.</p>

<p>The Hornet was built during World War II and fought within the Cold War and the Vietnam War, said Russell Moore, Hornet marketing manager.  His final mission was to retrieve the astronauts from the Apollo 11 and 12 missions after they landed within the Pacific Ocean.  The Hornet was decommissioned after the Apollo mission and was slated for scrap.  Instead, the ship was given a second life as a museum, and because the home for this experiment, a brand new chapter in its storied history is now opening.</p>
<p>Scientists on the University of Washington have already passed through about 70 iterations of the technology within the lab, Dr.  Rob Wood, principal investigator and professor of atmospheric sciences on the University of Washington.  Now they&#8217;re using the experiment on the Hornet to maneuver on to the following research step: testing the ocean salt plumes in real clouds.</p>
<p>After the jet of salt water is fired from nozzles of a rotating, fan-like machine, it disperses through the air and into the clouds.  The droplets are broken down into tiny molecules only one thousandth the width of a human hair.  The reflective effect of natural aerosols is imitated there.  Scientists imagine that this increased reflectivity allows clouds to stop excess heat from reaching the Earth&#39;s surface and contributing to global warming.</p>
<p>Wood explained that there are quite a few questions on the actual effectiveness of the technology that they try to reply with this experiment.</p>
<p>&#8220;Even if we could get the particles to get into the clouds, how much do they light up the clouds?&#8221; he said.  “Can we even make the particles we think are enough to lighten the clouds?”</p>
<p>“Every few minutes is different,” Wood said of the weather and wind conditions.  &#8220;It&#39;s moving everything around, and hopefully that will dilute the cloud so that the particles are further apart and don&#39;t really interact with each other.&#8221;</p>
<p>The start of the project also included the screening of a Ted Talk by Dr.  Sarah Doherty, the project&#39;s program director, during which she explained the science behind the experiment.</p>
<p>“This is not a solution to the climate crisis,” she said.  “However, brightening ocean clouds could be a way to treat the main symptom of the problem, which is too much heat in the atmosphere and ocean.”</p>
<p>Wood acknowledged that there are some individuals who query whether the introduction of cloud brightening could have unintended consequences, adding that there are already studies at other universities examining possible consequences, comparable to for marine ecosystems.</p>
<p>“It’s a big effort that goes beyond this small part,” Wood said.  “Ultimately it will always be a comparison to what would happen if we did nothing – if we just left climate change uncontrolled.”</p>
