For Patriots fans, who were looking forward to the team's plan, the newly installed head coach Mike Vrabel had some hopeful words in Indianapolis on Tuesday at the placement of the NFL rookie scouting combinat.

Vrabel was asked in regards to the team's plan for the free agency and upgraded the squad (potentially on trade) and gave a straightforward overview.

“Hopefully aggressive. We want to be aggressive, ”Vrabel explained The team's strategy in a press conference. “We want to address players from whom we believe that they will help us will be the excellent players that will be the excellent additions to the changing room and in the community. And if all of this fits and the compensation fits, I am confident that we are aggressive. “

“We started some of these discussions internally,” added Vrabel.

In his view, the patriots with the players have to be realistic and versatile that the team goals at, and the offers that attempt to make it.

“I think with different plans and options A and an option B – I mean, things will change,” remarked Vrabel. “Everyone looks at the same players, so we have to be able to turn and adapt and to have a view for every player that I would say at every level.”

He outlined the expectation that the plan for the free agency will move in several phases.

“There will be this high level that things will be done very quickly,” said Vrabel. “That will perhaps only go over just a few mid-range dollars, after which obviously take a have a look at the chances.

“The freelance agency is therefore divided into compensation and then divided into the opportunity, and I think we are able to offer both of these players both the compensation and the opportunity.”

The patriots can definitely offer financially competitive terms, since New England currently has many of the salary limit within the league (projected by Over the cap be greater than 128 million US dollars).

Vrabel used an auto analogy when he was asked whether the team was able to pay through the market value to get a player that he really wants.

“I like to buy like everyone else,” said Vrabel. “So if you go and only give a certain car, you may have to pay a little more for this one car because there is only one of them. If you get into a range in which you feel that there is an area in which the players are comparable and you like three or four players in a certain area for a specific role, you may not have to spend too much.

“But it’s free agency; I feel everyone sometimes overtakes within the free agency. “

Mike Vrabel is diving straight into things as he takes over as Patriots coach, and he still has lots on his to-do list in his crucial first offseason.

The roster rebuild appears to be done along with Eliot WolfNew England's de facto general manager who managed to emerge unscathed from the frustration of 2024.

Vrabel and Wolf met for a couple of hours to go over the roster, the brand new coach told WEEI's “The Greg Hill Show.” That relationship has already come under scrutiny considering Vrabel's previous issues with the Tennessee front office.

“No, we didn’t win enough games in Tennessee,” Vrabel said, half-joking. “I think that was the problem.”

Vrabel was asked if he was comfortable working with Wolf, who took over as head of human resources following Bill Belichick's departure.

“Absolutely,” Vrabel said. “More than comfortable. I wouldn't be here enthusiastic about the conversations and the interview process and the conversations with Eliot and Robert [Kraft] and with Jonathan [Kraft]and I'm just attempting to put together a roster and a program.

“For me that’s the biggest thing. I want to try to build a program around our coaches, our support staff, our human resources and especially our players that people want to be a part of and are proud of.” ”

There has also been quite a lot of interest in what the offense will seem like under Vrabel, whose Titans teams have been amongst essentially the most run-heavy teams within the NFL. From Vrabel's perspective, the offensive philosophy was more influenced by the proven fact that Derrick Henry was the most efficient running back within the league.

“Our best player was our running back,” Vrabel said. “So we tried to structure the offense and construct the offense around what we thought was our greatest player and what our strength was. When we had plays around Derrick that we were comfortable with, we threw them as successfully as we ran them.

“Every system and scheme you have, you base it on the players you have. I think there’s a lot of versatility, not just myself but hopefully the coaches we hire.”

Vrabel's tenure marked a high point for a once-struggling quarterback in Ryan Tannehill, who missed the primary few games of the season in 2019 before returning after a profession 12 months. Tannehill began 10 games and threw for two,742 yards, 22 touchdowns, 6 interceptions and a league-best passer rating of 117.5, enough to earn him a Pro Bowl nomination and the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year award.

However, Vrabel agreed that the brilliant spot for the Patriots offense is that quarterback Drake Maye — quite than a star running back like he did at Tennessee — may lead to a shift in emphasis from his Titans offense.

“Sure,” Vrabel said. “And again, we want to throw it as often as possible while remaining efficient and explosive.”

It stays to be seen who shall be the first architect of this offense as Vrabel begins to round out his coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt seems almost certain to be out; The position he opened might be Vrabel's most significant addition because the Patriots look to develop Maye.

When it was learned that former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski had said the primary call needs to be to longtime New England coordinator Josh McDaniels, Vrabel wasn't exactly a convincing endorsement.

“Um…yeah, I mean, I’ll look at every possible candidate that can help us,” Vrabel said. “We’re going to start that process this afternoon and visit with some great coaches and then see where things go.”

When asked directly whether McDaniels was on the list of candidates, Vrabel replied: “Yes, the list is long. I had a relationship with Josh and I have relationships with other offensive and defensive coaches that we will be interviewing and that we want to include here.”

What Bill Belichick said about Mike Vrabel taking up as Patriots head coach

The opportunity to work with a young, talented quarterback was one in all the aspects that drew Mike Vrabel back to New England.

Vrable interviewed for other head coaching jobs, but he selected the Patriots. He had great success as a player in New England, so it was a homecoming of sorts. He is accustomed to the ownership group. And now he has the chance to assist Drake Maye fully exploit its potential.

The recent Patriots coach was asked Monday how he plans to develop Maye.

“Put great people around you,” Vrabel said. “We have to. I would say my involvement will be about game management and situational awareness as well as where we are on the football field and trying to develop him as a leader of the offense.”

“When a quarterback calls the play, you want to say that everyone is going to believe he's going to score a touchdown…Drake is going to be his own person, but I'm going to give him some things that I feel like are necessary with that.” we are able to win football games. “

Improving the offensive line will likely be a top priority for New England this offseason. Maye and Jacoby Brissett combined for 52 sacks last season.

“I think with player acquisition, I think you look at what's available in free agency and what you can do – feel like you can sign and then you see what you do with it,” said Vrable. “Obviously you have a look at the teams which have the power to guard the quarterback and dictate the flow of the sport offensively and make certain we're solid and powerful up front, whether it's through free agency or the draft, that's something that’s decisive.”

“The D-linemen are getting better every year,” he added. “They are becoming more and more disruptive. They become bigger and more powerful. So when they try to disrupt our quarterback, we have to have some things that compensate for that.”

Maye will also need weapons to throw at. None of the Patriots' receivers totaled more than 700 yards last season. Hunter Henry was a reliable target at tight end. DeMario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte have shown potential. But overall, the unit wasn't very productive last season.

A change in personnel will only be part of the solution, said Vrabel. He said he plans to use an aggressive but not reckless style.

“Of course, personnel is the first route,” he said. “And then scheme and elegance and tempo and cadence and all those things, if our players can handle it, then we'll switch, we'll move, we'll play with different cadence, we'll go on the ball and.”Try , doing all the things that cause conflict.

“But it won’t be at the expense of the players. If the players can only handle so much, then we will do that and get really good at it.”

Offensive coordinators play a leading role in shaping a football team's offensive plan and style. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said Josh McDaniels could be a top candidate to join Vrabel's staff. The athlete McDaniels also listed the top candidates along with Nick Caley, Josh McCown, Tim Kelly, Charles London and Tommy Rees. The Patriots have yet to say whether Alex Van Pelt will stay or not.

McDaniels won six Super Bowls as an assistant under Bill Belichick and left the Patriots twice to seek head coaching opportunities elsewhere.

Caley, a former Patriots tight ends coach who works for the Rams in the same capacity, gave an interview for the opening last year.

McCown, a former NFL quarterback and current Vikings quarterbacks coach, worked with Maye when Maye was in high school, and Maye said he was close friends with McCown's two sons.

Kelly and London worked with Vrabel in Tennessee. Kelly, now the Giants' tight ends coach, was the Titans' offensive coordinator in 2023. London was the passing game coordinator this season.

Vrabel said he looks for efficiency, versatility and creativity in his offense.

“We have to be a very efficient passing team,” Vrabel said. “When you look statistically at what wins in the National Football League, our ability to influence the other team's quarterback and provide efficient quarterbacking and passing plays a large part in our success.

“There's numerous ways to do that – protecting the center of the pocket and all of the things we'll discuss as we go forward,” he added. “But how we protect the football, how aggressive but not reckless we’re, how we understand where we’re in the sport and the situational awareness that I believe I developed over six years after which my senior yr in Cleveland.” `

Former Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan saw firsthand Mike Vrabel's influence at Tennessee when it got here to establishing a culture and constructing a winning program.

And now Lewan expects that to proceed with Vrabel in his latest position as head coach of the Patriots – even when it could lead on to some growing pains for New England.

Lewan, who played for Vrabel with the Titans for five seasons, went to X on Sunday to deliver a message to Patriots players about what they’ll expect in the long run under Vrabel.

“The culture will be incredible. You will win games. Those tough, one-score games are what you're going to win,” Lewan said in a video. “That’s how Mike Vrabel works. This guy will make sure his team knows everything.”

Congratulations to @CoachVrabel50 and the @Patriots Franchise, you're all going to win a number of games

To all players and staff within the constructing: This is a small video you could use as a reference when entering the OTAs.

I also recommend any player drafted by the Pats have a look… pic.twitter.com/9Jkuy3ZYSW

— Taylor Lewan (@TaylorLewan77) January 12, 2025

Accountability and discipline were routinely discarded in terms of Vrabel's fame with the Titans. Lewan emphasized that New England's locker room may have a while to regulate to the high standard their latest head coach will set this spring.

“You have to keep your (rant) head in check. You have to understand that (expletive) is going to be really hard for a while,” Lewan said. “And everything will be okay. But know that you will soon be going to hell for a while. You'll sit in small groups in the locker room and ask yourself, “Who the hell is this guy?” “Why is he talking to us like that?” “Who does he think he is?”

“Yeah, he played in the league, whatever… By the way, he'll tell you at the first team meeting how many years he played in the league. And he will forever refer to it. Not a bad thing, guys. I'm telling you, it will work. I was part of it. While I've been in these small groups, and you start to break away from it, you come to the conclusion, “Yeah, this guy knows what he's (expletive) talking about.”

Lewan added that Vrabel pays attention to detail – be it the X's and O's, the game recording or even the staff around the stadium – and that it shows in record time.

“Especially if you’re a rookie and you’re just at the combine and you get drafted by the Patriots, congratulations,” Lewan said. “But also keep your (expletive) head down. You've got to turn that thing back on… “He'll make you stand up: 'Who's that, who's that?' Find out the name of the caretaker. Find out everyone's name. Learn everything.”

Bill Belichick became known for his demanding nature as head coach of the Patriots

Lewan noted that Vrabel preaches a system wherein your complete roster memorizes every facet of the sport — be it offense, defense or special teams — or the rest.

“That’s how you’re going to win the game. He will paint a beautiful picture for you,” Lewan said of Vrabel’s game preparation. “The man’s stage presence is top notch for a coach,” Lewan continued. “He thinks he’s a comedian, so laugh at the jokes. They won't always be great, but laugh at the jokes anyway.

“He’ll burn the team keys into your head. But when you play offense like I do, you also have to know defense and special teams. It’s not the worst feeling sitting in that team meeting and not knowing all the answers when he calls you.”

Despite the growing pains as Vrabel tries to determine his own culture in Foxborough, Lewan added that those learning curves will result in victories in a brief time period.

“I swear to God, it will be difficult at times. He can be evil,” Lewan said. “But you're going to win some games… you're in a good position. Good luck, Patriots.”
