Real Madrid's long-awaited signing of Kylian Mbappe has quite a lot of potential for the reigning Spanish and European champions – but there are also some query marks.

One is how Mbappe matches into the starting line-up, on condition that he prefers to play on the left wing, where Vinicius Junior, who was the highest scorer last season with 24 goals, plays. The other is how the 25-year-old Frenchman matches into a longtime dressing room – a side the La Liga club considered in January once they again seriously considered signing him.

has already detailed how head coach Carlo Ancelotti plans to make use of a versatile 4-3-3 system, with Mbappe in the center, Vinicius Jr. on the left and Rodrygo on the fitting. In defence, this becomes a 4-4-2, with Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. because the two strikers and Jude Bellingham moving to the left midfield.

GO DEEPER

Mbappe at Real – how does he slot in with Bellingham, Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo?

There remains to be the query of personality. Madrid didn’t want Mbappe to have the identical influence as he did at his former club Paris Saint-Germain after the 2022 contract extension. They also feared that too high a salary could arouse distrust in a harmonious group of players. Mbappe is reportedly set to receive a signing bonus of around €100 million ($109 million; £84 million) after which a salary of €15 million.

The current group of Madrid players is taken into account one in every of the tightest lately. Sources near the dressing room – who, like all those quoted in this text, wished to stay anonymous to guard their relationships – said the atmosphere was the very best that they had ever experienced, admitting that that they had not had the identical feeling in previous years.

This is what recently retired Toni Kroos was referring to when asked at an event last week whether he would stay in contact with one in every of his former Madrid teammates.

“Yes, I have a personal relationship with many of them,” said the German midfielder. “Not only was last season very successful, we also had a first-class dressing room – I can't say that about all the teams I've played for. They are people I want to stay in touch with.”

There were already signs of this throughout the players’ summer holidays.

As he did in 2023, Vinicius Jr. invited a collection of his club colleagues to his hometown of Rio de Janeiro after Brazil were knocked out by Uruguay within the quarter-finals of the Copa America this month. Many were unable to attend because of family commitments or scheduling issues related to international tournaments, but Eduardo Camavinga, Ferland Mendy, Eder Militao and Rodrygo were there.

The players were participating in a charity event for the winger's foundation, the Instituto Vini Jr., through which he invested 1.3 million euros last yr to assist greater than 3,500 children. They enjoyed just a few days of rest, partying and playing football against one another. They were joined by people from their circles and other well-known personalities from the world of sport and elsewhere, corresponding to NBA star of the Boston Celtics, Jaylen Brown, and singers Ozuna, Rauw Alejandro and Ludmilla.

Mbappe was amongst those invited, alongside Vinicius Jr's compatriot, friend and now Madrid teammate Endrick. But each were because of be officially presented on the club's Santiago Bernabeu stadium following their respective appearances on the European Championships and the Copa America – Mbappe was presented last Tuesday, Endrick this Saturday – and needed to take care of the logistics of their latest lives in Spain.

At his opening press conference, Mbappe confirmed that Vinicius Jr. played a job in his final move to Madrid. He was asked which players had spoken to him concerning the club before his arrival from PSG.

“I had all the French players with me, who always told me and explained to me that this is the best (club) in the world,” Mbappe said. “Also Vinicius, who asked me to come and told me that we would play together in attack. Thank you to them because it's always good that they want me to play with them.”

Several players publicly showed their support – whether implicit or explicit – for Mbappe’s signing before it was made official.

When rumors emerged last yr that Madrid could possibly be linked with the transfer, Rodrygo posted a photograph of himself celebrating with Mbappe in August, and when the deal was announced, there was an enormous response from your complete team on social media.

Sources at Valdebebas, Madrid's training ground, said Mbappe has made an excellent impression, describing him as “intelligent” and “cheerful”. The club offered him lower terms this time than of their failed 2022 bid, regardless that his base salary is amongst the best within the squad (and along with his signing bonus, he’s by far their highest-paid player).

Mbappe set the fitting tone of the day in his first press conference, saying he would play wherever Ancelotti sent him, adding that he had no intention of taking the No. 10 shirt worn by Luka Modric for the past seven seasons out of respect for the long-serving Croatian midfielder (he’ll wear No. 9).

So there are good signs – and it’s value reflecting on what happened when one other big name, Bellingham, moved to Madrid last yr.

Initial reports suggested that Bellingham and Vinicius Jr. didn’t get on, but this was soon proven false. They sometimes travelled to training in the identical automotive and Vinicius Jr. celebrated a few of his goals by mimicking the Englishman's open-arm celebration. When Bellingham was interviewed by the club's official TV channel throughout the La Liga title celebrations in Madrid in May, he said: “I'm here, with the best player in the world,” while hugging Vinicius Jr.

In this interview, the Brazilian called Bellingham “Belligol,” one in every of several nicknames inside the team.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is 200 cm tall and is due to this fact also often known as “Jirafa” (giraffe), Antonio Rüdiger as “Loco” (Crazy), David Alaba as “Alabama”, Ferland Mendy as “General”, Eduardo Camavinga as “Pantera” (Panther), Federico Valverde as “Halcon” (Falcon), “Gaucho” (the cowboy-like rider who’s a well-liked symbol in his native Uruguay) or “Bombazo” (Bomb – due to the ability of his shots), while Arda Güler is often known as “Abi” (within the language of his native Turkey, “older brother”). Players often use these nicknames on social media, which is a testament to the positive atmosphere within the dressing room.

GO DEEPER

Cliques in football changing rooms: The good, the bad and the ugly

This was helped last season by the combination of young players and veterans corresponding to Nacho, Kroos and Joselu, who all left the club this summer. However, other experienced players corresponding to 38-year-old Modric and 33-year-old Lucas Vazquez are staying after extending their contracts for an additional yr.

The club's staff have played a crucial role in creating this harmony.

Last summer, influential chief scout Juni Calafat invited latest signings Bellingham and Guler, in addition to Brahim Diaz (who returned from a three-year loan at AC Milan), to dinner at a well known restaurant in central Madrid. After the decisive La Liga win against Barcelona in April, Guler then hosted a barbecue at his home, attended by Brahim, Valverde and staff.

The players have an ideal relationship with Ancelotti and the opposite coaches. Carlos' son and assistant Davide is vital because, at 35, he’s closer in age to the players and speaks several languages.

Carlo and Davide Ancelotti have an excellent relationship with the players (Charlotte Wilson/Offside/Offside via Getty Images)

They even have an excellent relationship with doctors, physiotherapists and coaches. This was evident when physiotherapist Jaime Salom insisted on attending Militao's comeback from a serious knee injury against Athletic Bilbao on the Bernabeu in March, despite his mother having died that week. Rodrygo dedicated a goal in that match to Salom.

“Such details are usually kept confidential and are often not visible, but they are very important,” a source from Valdebebas said on the time.

All in all, the image that emerges is of a united dressing room that’s able to welcome one other star player in Mbappe.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Solemn and bandaged, Donald Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination on the Republican National Convention on Thursday. In his speech, he described intimately the assassination attempt that might have ended his life just five days earlier. He then laid out a sweeping populist agenda, particularly on immigration.

The 78-year-old former president, best known for his boastful and aggressive rhetoric, began his acceptance speech with a softer and deeply personal message, one directly inspired by his brush with death. Moment by moment, as the group listened in silence, Trump described standing on the stage in Butler, Pennsylvania, turning his head to have a look at a chart on display when he felt something hit his ear. He raised his hand to his head and immediately saw that it was covered in blood.

“If I hadn't moved my head at that very last moment, the assassin's bullet would have hit its target,” Trump said. “And I wouldn't be here tonight. We wouldn't be together.”

Trump's speech, the longest convention speech in modern history at nearly 93 minutes, marked the climax and conclusion of a four-day major Republican pep rally that drew hundreds of conservative activists and elected officials to the swing state of Wisconsin as voters weigh an election that currently features two deeply unpopular candidates. Sensing a political opportunity after his near-death experience, the customarily bombastic Republican leader struck a brand new tone that he hopes will add much more momentum to an election that appears to be tipping in his favor.

“The discord and division in our society must be healed. We must heal it fast. As Americans, we are bound together by a single fate and a common destiny. We rise together. Or we fall apart,” Trump said, wearing, as he has done all week, a big white Band-Aid on his right ear to cover a wound he sustained in Saturday's shooting. “I'm running for president for all of America, not half of America, because winning for half of America is not a victory.”

While speaking in a softer tone than at his usual rallies, Trump also outlined an agenda led by what he promised could be the most important deportation effort in U.S. history. He repeatedly accused people crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally of staging an “invasion.” He also announced latest trade tariffs and an “America First” foreign policy.

Trump also falsely claimed that Democrats cheated within the 2020 election he lost, despite the fact that a series of federal and state investigations proved there was no systematic fraud. He also said “we must not criminalize dissent or demonize political disagreement,” despite the fact that he has long called for the prosecution of his opponents.

He didn’t mention abortion rights, a problem that has dogged Republicans for the reason that U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal right to abortion two years ago. Trump nominated three of the six justices who overturned Roe v. Wade. At his rallies, Trump often takes credit for overturning Roe v. Wade and argues that states must have the appropriate to determine their very own abortion laws.

He also didn’t mention the revolt on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, by which Trump supporters tried to stop the confirmation of his defeat to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump has long referred to the people detained for the revolt as “hostages.”

In fact, Trump barely mentioned Biden and sometimes referred only to the “current administration.”

“It was Donald Trump who destroyed our economy, dismantled rights and failed middle-class families,” Jen O'Malley Dillon, Biden's campaign manager, said in an announcement after the speech. “Now he is seeking the presidency with an even more extreme vision of where he wants to take this country.”

The RNC ends at an uncertain time within the race

With lower than 4 months remaining until the top of the competition, major changes to the race are possible, if not going.

Trump's appearance got here as 81-year-old Democratic incumbent Biden clings to his party's likely nomination despite relentless pressure from key allies in Congress, donors and even former President Barack Obama, who fears he may not have the ability to hunt re-election after his disastrous debate.

Biden has long been urged by his allies to campaign more vigorously, but as an alternative he’s in isolation at his beach house in Delaware after being diagnosed with COVID-19.

Hours before the balloon rain on Trump and his family was scheduled to happen within the congressional hall, Biden's deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks appeared nearby in Milwaukee and repeatedly reiterated that Biden wouldn’t resign.

“I don't want to be rude, but I don't know how many more times I can answer that,” Fulks told reporters. “There are no plans to replace Biden on the ballot.”

Strength in this system

Thursday's RNC program seemed designed to exude strength and masculinity while also implicitly rejecting Biden.

Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White called Trump “a real American bad ass.” Kid Rock sang a song with the chorus “Fight, fight!” that echoed the words Trump mouthed on stage in Pennsylvania as Secret Service agents surrounded him. And wrestling icon Hulk Hogan called the previous president “an American hero.”

Hogan received a standing ovation when he stood on the important stage and ripped off his shirt, revealing a red “Make America Great Again” shirt.

“As an entertainer, I try to stay out of politics,” Hogan said, breaking character briefly. “I can't stay silent any longer.”

Like many other speakers on the convention, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson said recent events were inspired by God and he wondered “if there isn't something bigger going on.”

“I think it changed him,” Carlson said of the shooting, praising Trump for not erupting in anger afterward.

“He has done his best to unite the country,” Carlson added. “It is the most responsible and unifying behavior of a head of state that I have ever seen.”

Former first lady Melania Trump and Ivanka Trump, the president's eldest daughter and former senior adviser, met within the hall of Congress before Trump's speech. It was their first appearance there. Neither woman spoke.

At nearly 93 minutes, the previous president's speech surpassed the 74 minutes he gave eight years ago, in response to the American Presidency Project on the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Republicans leave party convention united

The convention showcased a Republican Party reshaped by Trump since he shocked the GOP establishment and won over the party base on his approach to the party's nomination in 2016. Trump's defeated rivals – including Senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis – put aside their earlier criticism and gave him their full support.

Even his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, chosen by Trump to hold his movement into the subsequent generation, was once a harsh critic, suggesting in a now-public private message that Trump could possibly be “America’s Hitler.”

After Trump's near assassination, security was a top priority in Milwaukee. But after nearly 4 days, there have been no serious incidents within the congressional hall or in the massive security perimeter surrounding it.

The Secret Service, supported by lots of of law enforcement officers from across the country, had a robust and visual presence. And at Trump's appearances every night, he was surrounded by a wall of security officers, regardless of where he went.

“I'm not supposed to be here tonight,” Trump said within the packed hall of Congress. The hundreds of people that listened in silence shouted back: “Yes, you are.”
