Almost all primate species give birth to just one young, although there are exceptions. Several of the wet-nosed primates – including lemurs, lorises and galagos – and just about all marmosets and tamarins from South America give birth to twins.

Before our work, researchers assumed that these distinctive twin-bearing primates have to be what evolutionary biologists call “derived” or “distinct” from the more common ancestral trait. But our research turns this narrative on its head: it is definitely the singleton-bearing primates which can be derived and distinctive. Further back in evolution, two babies directly was the norm. Our primate ancestors gave birth to twins.

So when did this evolutionary change in primate litter size occur?

The move to singletons

Most modern humans give birth to only one child – a pretty big child with an excellent larger head. Human brain and body size is actually related to our ability to develop and refine technologies. Paleoanthropologists have long been studying what they call Encephalization: a rise in brain size relative to body size over evolutionary time.

For primates and particularly humans Learning in childhood is crucial. We suspect that the transition from twins to singletons was critical to the event of huge, large-brained human babies able to complex learning as infants and toddlers.

Our latest research also shows that the switch from giving birth to twins to giving birth to singletons occurred multiple times within the primate lineage – a telltale sign that it was useful for primates to develop just one fetus per pregnancy. Our results don't mean that having twins today is a drawback – although as a mother of multiples, Tesla can actually say it's challenging. But having twins today is a really different experience than the birth of our little primate ancestors within the trees 60 million years ago.

Willi Castro had three hits and Carlos Correa and Austin Martin had two each for the Twins. Minnesota has won five games in a row and 7 of eight.

“When I'm not in the game, I always prepare in the cage. I know the pitchers that can come in and I have to be ready,” he said.

JJ Bleday had a career-high 4 hits and Tyler Soderstrom had three hits, including a house run, but Oakland lost for the ninth straight game, including all seven games of a road trip that began in San Diego. Pitching coach Scott Emerson was ejected within the sixth inning.

“When we hit home runs with this offense, we usually win. We just didn't have the pitching to do it,” manager Mark Kotsay said. “We fought better on the road than we did the last time we played at home, but we couldn't get a win.”

Lewis hit seven home runs in his first twelve games of the season, something that has never happened in Twins history.

“That's more than I've ever seen,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “It's not a coincidence, he's really very talented, he has a very good swing that always stays in the air. He can hit fastballs, he can hit breaking balls, he always has a chance to do something. He has a dangerous nature at the plate. When he's on your side, you can't help but smile when he does it.”

After Josh Staumont (1-0) made the ultimate out of the seventh inning, he threw out the team with a strikeout within the eighth inning. Griffin Jax pitched a scoreless ninth inning and secured his sixth save.

Correa had multiple hits in eight of his last 11 games, including two home runs as a part of a three-hit game as Minnesota won the opener 6-2. Lewis and Carlos Santana also hit home runs.

After Soderstrom's home run, the A's didn't put one other runner in scoring position against Ryan. Griffin Jax and Jorge Alcala closed the sport for Minnesota, which improved to 37-32 on the season while the A's fell to 26-45.

Kepler opened the inning with a single to right and Correa, who entered Wednesday with a five-hit game and a 15-29 hitting streak, got lucky with a swinging bunt that Medina couldn't fend off. Both runners advanced when Medina threw a wild pitch three-quarters of the best way up the screen.

Correa struck again within the third inning when he hit a ground single past Zack Gelof at second base. He brought home Trevor Larnach, the previous College Park High star who had earlier been given a walk, and gave Minnesota a 3-2 lead. The Twins scored one other run within the second inning on an infield out by Austin Martin. The inning began with an infield single by Buxton and a single by Jeffers that moved Buxton to 3rd base.

Correa's home run within the seventh inning brought home Royce Lewis, who reached the primary with a single.

The Twins were more successful than the A's with a rating of 13:4.

NOTEWORTHY

— Soderstrom and Gelof collided within the second inning while chasing a foul ball off Ryan Jeffers' bat down the first-base line. Gelof caught the ball and was out, but hit Soderstrom in the pinnacle along with his elbow. Soderstrom was shaken up but stayed in the sport after being examined by the coaching staff.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ceddanne Rafaela hit the Red Sox's first home run in seven games, Rafael Devers added one other and Boston ended Minnesota's 12-game winning streak with a 9-2 win over the Twins on Sunday.

Vaughn Grissom and Dominic Smith scored two runs on doubles, and Boston ended a three-game losing streak wherein it scored just 4 runs.

Ryan Jeffers hit a house run and Trevor Larnach hit an RBI single for Minnesota.

The Twins' 12-game winning streak was the second-longest in team history, trailing a 15-game winning streak in June 1991, the last season wherein Minnesota won the World Series.

A bases-loaded single likely would have tied the sport at three runs apiece, as Boston trailed 3-1 on the time. Instead, a hitless day for Devers essentially cemented a Red Sox defeat.
