Harriette Cole: How can I tell my girlfriend that I'm afraid of our conversations?

It's frustrating because I feel like I'm being forced to decide on a side although I don't wish to be there in any respect.

To make matters worse, I can't help but feel bad for his girlfriend because, frankly, my roommate is mistaken more often than not. He's selfish, disrespectful of her feelings, and stingy relating to sharing expenses or giving her a pleasant date.

I can see she's unhappy with how he treats her, but for some reason she stays with him.

The other day my roommate got here to me asking for advice about her relationship and I felt conflicted. On one hand, I would like to be honest with him and tell him that he's the issue, but I also don't wish to smash our friendship by being too blunt.

I've at all times tried to remain neutral and I've made it a rule not to present people advice about their relationships since it never ends well, but now I feel trapped because I do know he's within the mistaken. I feel guilty because I’m enabling his behavior by not saying anything.

Should I stay out of it and stick with my rule, or should I tell him the reality, even when it jeopardizes our friendship?

LOVE IN THE CENTER: Do your roommate a great conscience and talk over with him openly.

Tell him that you just've worked hard to remain out of his relationship because you already know it's none of what you are promoting, but since he's repeatedly asked you for advice, you may offer one thing: you think that he likes his girlfriend higher could treat. They realized that he may very well be more considerate, generous and type.

He may appreciate your openness. He may not have had positive role models to guide him toward loving, supportive behavior, so your insight may prove helpful to him.

However, proceed with caution and be gentle. You're right in the event you don't wish to be in the midst of his drama.

DEAR HARRIETTE: I’m a school professor and noticed that one in every of my students in my class was having significant problems.

At first I believed it’d just be the fabric, but after observing her behavior and performance, I even have a robust feeling that it is expounded to aspects outside of the classroom. This student, who was once engaged and consistent, has begun turning in assignments late, missing class, and appearing distracted after they are present.

I've tried approaching them casually during class breaks or after lectures, but they don't seem willing to open up.

I don't wish to pry an excessive amount of or make them uncomfortable, but I feel chargeable for making a supportive environment where they feel comfortable searching for help after they need it.

As a professor, I'm unsure how far to go in addressing this topic. I would like to assist, but I also don't wish to overstep my boundaries or tackle an excessive amount of of their personal life.

Should I proceed to attempt to approach them or should I step back and allow them to come to me after they are ready?

HAYWARD – It began with a probability meeting at a mall between a person in his late 20s and a teenage girl who told police she reluctantly gave him her number and rebuffed his try to hug her.

And the saga ended eight months later after the person allegedly raped the girl in his vehicle and threatened to point out a video of sex acts to her family members if she didn't meet him one last time, court documents show.

Now, 26-year-old Andrew Patrick Kelly is in Santa Rita Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail and is charged with forcible rape, illegal sex with a minor and oral copulation with a minor, all felonies. The charging documents allege that Kelly sexually abused the lady during two meetings in early 2024 after which raped her of their last encounter in February before driving her back to her highschool within the East Bay.

After their last encounter, Kelly was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in a separate incident, in keeping with court records. In April – a month after the fees were filed – he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor and was sentenced to probation, records show.

Kelly pleaded not guilty and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for November, in keeping with court records. The evidence against him includes not only statements made by the alleged victim to police, but in addition Kelly's own conversations with two Fremont cops who posed because the girl after she informed them of the alleged extortion attempt, authorities said.

In those conversations, police said Kelly repeated a threat he had already made to the girl – that he would release videos of himself sexually abusing her unless she agreed to fulfill again. She had allegedly agreed to a gathering on the condition that he delete the videos in front of her, but as an alternative gave her phone to investigators in order that they could collect evidence against him.

Kelly was arrested in late September at the identical Newark mall where he allegedly met the girl, police said. In a subsequent interview, he claimed that every one sexual contacts occurred after her 18th birthday and were consensual. But police say they’ve digital evidence that contradicts that.

Kelly allegedly approached the girl in early 2024 and asked for her number. She later told police that she had stated this, but felt creepy when he tried to hug her through the same conversation. After they began texting him, she agreed to several meetings with him, but cut off contact after he raped her, in keeping with authorities.

In addition to those charges, Kelly has two domestic violence charges pending this 12 months, in addition to a drunken driving and child endangerment charge. According to police, he was also arrested in 2021 on suspicion of indecent exposure but was never charged.

Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada told staff the aim is to win the Premier League title in 2028, on the a hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the club's founding.

Berrada, who officially moved from rivals Manchester City in June, addressed staff at a gathering at Old Trafford last Wednesday and outlined the shared ambitions of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the football hierarchy.

Berrada briefed employees on “Project 150” – so called since it coincides with a very powerful milestone in United's existence. The club was founded in 1878 under the name Newton Heath before changing its name to Manchester United in 1902.

This defined goal highlights the work required of the team as United currently sit eleventh within the Premier League after two wins, a draw and two defeats. United also drew of their opening game of the Europa League against FC Twente, the lowest-ranked team they may face at Old Trafford within the competition.

Berrada also talked in regards to the women's team winning their first title this 12 months, which also played a vital role. He tried to strike an ambitious tone, accepting that it might take plenty of exertions, quite than appearing optimistic.

Ten Hag questions Man Utd mentality: 'We were too relaxed'

Berrada's daring comments were met with mixed sentiments by a workforce audience after job cuts saw its 1,000-strong workforce reduced by 1 / 4. People who’ve been with the club for several years have left, resulting in feelings of anger and dejection, while others are energized on the prospect of the club becoming more sportingly driven.

Ratcliffe's arrival was the catalyst for the layoffs to lower your expenses, the club says, but his most important motivation was for United to win major titles again. In his first round of media interviews in February after securing his 27.7 percent investment, he brought up the a hundred and fiftieth anniversary.

“It’s not a 10-year plan. With a 10-year plan, fans would run out of patience. But it’s certainly a three-year plan to get there,” he said.

“To imagine that we’ll play pretty much as good football next 12 months as Manchester City did against Real Madrid last season will not be reasonable. And if we give people false expectations, they might be dissatisfied. So the important thing thing is our history so that folks can see that we’re making progress.

“I think the club will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2028. If our development leads to a very good position within this time frame, we would be very satisfied with that. Because it's not easy to make Manchester United the best football team in the world.

“The ultimate goal for Manchester United – and that will always be the case – is that we fight for the Premier League and for the Champions League. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Ahead of the Liverpool game earlier this month, which United lost 3-0, Berrada and Dan Ashworth, the club's newly appointed sporting director, spoke to the media.

“Erik has our full support and we have worked very closely together in this transfer window,” said Berrada. “We will continue to work very closely with him to help him get the best results from the team. Do we still believe in Erik? Absolutely. We think Erik is the right coach for us and we fully support him.”

United return to motion against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday.

“I have a good relationship with him, I think he's a nice guy,” Trump said of Musk in a call-in interview with Fox News.

“Someone told me he would give me 45 million [dollars] a month. I said, “That sounds like a lot, even for Elon that's a lot,” said the Republican presidential candidate.

But Musk “never told me that he [$45 million],” he said.

“But he said, 'I strongly support you,' even though I oppose the electric car mandate,” Trump said, referring to the Biden administration's policy to prioritize electric vehicles over gasoline-powered vehicles.

Musk's support came shortly after Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at a campaign rally on July 13.

Moreover, this happened just over a week before President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from re-election and Vice President Kamala Harris became the de facto Democratic candidate.

Two days after the shooting at a Trump rally, the Wall Street Journal wrote: Citing sources familiar with the matter, that Musk plans to donate $45 million a month to a newly formed pro-Trump super PAC.

The PAC has already received large donations from other major figures in the technology and finance world, such as Joe Lonsdale and the Winklevoss twins.

But Musk said in an interview with conservative celebrity Jordan Peterson that the number cited by the Journal was “simply not true.”

In an X-post on Tuesday night, Musk wrote, “I donate a few dollars to America PAC, but on a much smaller scale.” He claimed that most Republicans support the PAC's core values of “supporting meritocracy and individual freedom.”

Musk persisted when questioned about the alleged $45 million monthly pledge during a visit to Capitol Hill on Wednesday.

“I never said I was giving Trump $45 million a month,” said Muskwho had been invited by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to attend his speech to Congress. “That was an invention of the Wall Street Journal.”

Musk said in March that he wouldn’t donate money to “either of the two U.S. presidential candidates.” However, that statement left open the chance that he could make indirect donations through a political motion committee, which he has now confirmed.

DEAR ABBY: Over the course of 12 years, my husband and I even have given greater than $400,000 as a down payment to our adult daughter and her husband, each now of their mid-40s.

Recently my daughter pestered me with the words “Good grandparents/parents help their children” and wanted extra money from me.

I finally told my husband about my cheating and he’s incredibly forgiving. He understands that I even have insecurity issues and worry about losing the love of my daughter and phone with our grandchildren.

Two years ago, our daughter told us that due to our “difficult personalities,” she needed boundaries and my husband and I were only allowed to go to her one week a yr (they live 3,000 miles away). This was a shock because my husband had taken care of our grandchildren from the time they were born until they moved away when the kids were 4 and 6. We had traveled with them and thought we were close.

Given all this, I told my daughter that I felt manipulated and gave them two months' notice that I’d stop making monthly payments.

She has now cut off contact with us – blocked all phones and social media. I’m devastated. I feel hopeless and am searching for counseling. I can't shake the sensation that it's my fault. What do you’re thinking that?

BLOCKED: Your only “mistake” is that you just gave a dollar of cash to your manipulative and ungrateful daughter and hid it out of your husband.

You can't make someone love you by buying their affection. (It's either there or it isn't.) As you may see now, that attempt was fruitless.

Your daughter is making the most of your love for the grandchildren to punish you for not shelling out more. (And she thinks you might have a “difficult personality”? Wow!)

I’m so glad that you just are discussing this sad situation with a licensed mental health skilled. It is the surest way I do know to stop blaming yourself and regain your emotional balance.

DEAR ABBY: I even have a friend who, each time we ate out and a waiter tried to take her empty plate away from her however the others round her had not finished eating, would hold out her hand to stop the waiter from taking her plate.

I only told her this once, despite the fact that we’ve been friends for 30 years. What do you’re thinking that?

LOVE FOOD: I don't think your friend is being rude. According to Emily Post, if a waiter clears someone's plate away before everyone has finished eating, it could possibly give the impression that those that are still eating are holding up work, and those that are finished can feel like they rushed the meal.

DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend of three years recently proposed to me. The problem is that his great uncle jilted my great aunt within the Seventies.

This shouldn't matter to the present situation because it was many years ago and I barely know my great aunt. She didn't even know my fiancé's name until the last family reunion when I discussed our engagement and my future last name.

She freaked out and demanded that he leave her house! She told me to not marry him and said his family was all the time the identical.

I don't like my great aunt very much, but after this controversy, her children and siblings are threatening to shun me if I marry him.

The wedding is in five months and I'm torn. Family is essential to me and although I'm not very near her, I even have made it a goal to be closer to her children (my cousins) and other relatives as I become older.

I do know that what happened to her has hurt her loads, but I believe her request is outrageous. What should I do? Should I postpone the marriage?

LOVE PAST DRAMA: Let me get this straight. Your great aunt tried to steer a young man to marry her by claiming she would have his child. Did she have the infant and was the daddy's paternity ever established?

If your fiancé's great uncle gets wind of the incontrovertible fact that he’s being falsely accused and that your great aunt not only doesn't love him but in addition wants to present him financial advantage, who can blame him for running away? I actually can't.

You must now resolve whether to interrupt off your engagement together with your fiancé (whom you most likely know and love well after three years) or give in to the emotional blackmail of your unethical great aunt.

I do know what I’d do. This may very well be your likelihood to interrupt the curse.

DEAR ABBY: After a social event, I come home and take into consideration what I said or didn't say. Did I behave accurately? I worry and do these “checks” again and again in my mind. It's painful.

The social occasion may very well be lunch with a friend, a phone call, or a celebration. I've been doing this for years and it's exhausting.

Why am I doing this? And more importantly, how can I stop?

A licensed psychotherapist can make it easier to to alleviate the obsessive thoughts which might be troubling you. Your doctor or medical insurance company can refer you.

DEAR READERS: I join tens of millions of Americans observing this Memorial Day in praying thanks for those brave men and ladies who sacrificed their lives in service to our country. May they rest in peace. —

Witty's comments got here during a hearing Wednesday before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee.

Change Healthcare offers payment, revenue management and other solutions corresponding to e-prescription software. When the threat was identified, the corporate shut down affected systems, temporarily stopping many doctors from writing prescriptions or being paid for his or her services.

UnitedHealth told CNBC in April that it paid a ransom to guard patient data. Previous reports had discovered a $22 million wire transfer on the Bitcoin blockchain, but the corporate had not previously confirmed the number.

“The decision to pay a ransom was mine,” Witty said. “This was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make and I would not wish it on anyone.”

UnitedHealth is one among the most important corporations on the planet with a market capitalization of around $450 billion. Its business units Optum – which serves 103 million customers – and Change Healthcare – which handles one in three patient records – merged in 2022.

Committee Chairman Sen. Ron WydenD-Ore., said in his opening statement that the Change Healthcare breach was a “bleak warning of the consequences of megacorporations that are too big to fail.”

“Companies this large have a duty to protect their customers and lead the way on this issue,” Wyden said.

Witty told the committee that cybercriminals accessed Change Healthcare through a server that was not protected by multi-factor authentication (MFA), which requires users to confirm their identity in at the very least two other ways. He said UnitedHealth has now implemented MFA in all external systems.

“As a result of this malicious cyberattack, patients and providers have experienced disruption and people are concerned about their private health information,” Witty said. “I would like to say very clearly to everyone affected: I am deeply sorry.”

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., held up a shiny yellow copy of “Hacking for Dummies” through the hearing and said UnitedHealth was answerable for fixing the breach.

“These are some basic things that have been overlooked. So it's a shame for internal audit, external audit and your systems people who are charged with redundancy, they're not doing their job,” Tillis said.

A filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said UnitedHealth discovered in late February that a cyber threat actor had accessed part of Change Healthcare's information technology network.

Witty said Change Healthcare's core systems are back online, although some of its secondary support functions are still being restored.

UnitedHealth said in February that the Blackcat ransomware group was behind the attack. According to a, Blackcat, also known as Noberus and ALPHV, steals sensitive data from institutions and threatens to publish it unless a ransom is paid Release in December from the US Department of Justice.

UnitedHealth confirmed in April that the breach compromised files containing protected health information and personal data. The company said a data review is ongoing and therefore it could take months before the company can notify affected individuals.

Witty said Wednesday that UnitedHealth is working with regulators to assess the breach and notify people “as quickly as possible” if their data has been compromised.

In early March, UnitedHealth launched a short lived financial assistance program to support providers that experienced money flow disruptions as a consequence of the cyberattack. There aren’t any fees, interest or other costs along with payments, and providers have 45 days to refund the cash once their regular payment operations resume.

During the hearing, Witty said the corporate had not yet asked anyone for loan repayments and that it might be as much as providers to find out when their operations would officially return to normal.

Witty didn’t immediately disclose whether UnitedHealth will provide additional support to providers who could also be combating other loans and interest payments due to breach.

Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., pressed Witty to share how UnitedHealth is working to make sure something just like the Change Healthcare breach doesn't occur again. Witty said the corporate plans to share its discoveries concerning the breach, adding that it must concentrate on reducing the speed of cyberattacks on the healthcare sector.

“We are clearly trying to assume our responsibility in this attack. We are also trying to learn from it,” he said.
