<p>After a hearth on December 16 in its facility in Milpitas, the Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) found that the damage was way more extensive than originally expected.</p>

<p><a href="https://marinemammalscience.org/facts/eubalaena-australis/">Southern right whales</a> have a life expectancy well beyond 100 years, and 10% could live to be over 130 years old, in accordance with our latest published research <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.adq3086">within the journal Science Advances</a>. Some of those whales can live as much as 150 years. This life expectancy is nearly double the 70-80 years that is generally assumed. </p>
<p><a href="https://marinemammalscience.org/facts/eubalaena-glacialis/">North Atlantic right whales</a> They were also believed to have a maximum lifespan of <a href="https://doi.org/10.3354/meps171285">about 70 years</a>. However, we&#8217;ve got found this to be the case <a href="https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/41712/178589687">threatened with extinction</a> The average life expectancy of those species is currently only 22 years and so they rarely live past 50 years.</p>
<p>These two species are very closely related &#8211; they were considered one species just 25 years ago &#8211; so we will assume that they&#8217;ve similar lifespans. We attribute the stark difference in life expectancy of North Atlantic right whales to human-caused mortality, primarily because of entanglements in fishing gear and ship strikes.</p>

<p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.adq3086">We made these latest age estimates</a> using photo identification of individual female whales over several many years. Individual whales may be identified from photos yr after yr. When they die, they aren&#8217;t any longer photographically “seen again” and disappear. From these photos, we developed what scientists call “survival curves” by estimating the likelihood that whales would disappear from the photographic record as they age. From these survival curves we could estimate the utmost potential lifespan. </p>
<p>Twenty-five years ago, scientists working with local whale hunters within the Arctic showed that bowhead whales could meet these demands <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/B978-0-12-818969-6.00007-8">even over 200 years</a>. Their evidence included the invention of stone harpoon points, which had not been used because the mid-Nineteenth century, embedded within the blubber of whales recently killed by traditional whalers. Analysis of proteins from the eyes of hunted whales provided further evidence of their long lifespans. Like right whales, before this evaluation, researchers assumed that bowhead whales lived to about 80 years and that humans were the longest-living mammals.</p>
<p>In the years following that report, scientists tried to determine what was special about bowhead whales that allowed them to live such long lives. However, our latest evaluation of the life expectancy of two close relatives of the bowhead whale shows that other whale species can also have extremely long lifespans.</p>
<h2>Why it matters</h2>
<p>Understanding how long wild animals live has big implications for the way best to guard them. Animals which have a really long lifespan <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41559-019-0938-7">normally reproduce extremely slowly</a> and there may be a few years between births. The life history of baleen whales – particularly the age at which females begin breeding and the spacing between calves – is strongly influenced by their potential lifespan. Conservation and management strategies that don&#8217;t plan accordingly have the next risk of failure. This is especially vital given the expected impacts of climate change. </p>
<h2>What shouldn&#8217;t be yet known</h2>
<p>There are many other large whales including blue, fin, sei, humpback, gray and sperm whales. Like bowhead and right whales, this was also the case <a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/mms.12281">almost worn out by whaling</a>. Scientists currently assume that they&#8217;ll live to be around 80 or 90 years old. However, that&#39;s exactly what we believed with bowhead and right whales until data showed they may live for much longer.</p>
<p>How long can these other whale species live? Industrial whaling, which only led to the Sixties, eliminated ancient whales from the world&#39;s whale populations. Although many whale populations are recovering, whales born after the tip of commercial whaling do not need enough time to become older.</p>
<p>It is feasible, even likely, that many other species of whales even have long lifespans.</p>

<h2>What other research is being conducted?</h2>
<p>Other studies find this <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/science.ado2705">Elderly loss</a> from populations is a phenomenon that happens in most large animal species. It reduces the reproductive potential of many species. Researchers also argue that this represents an actual lack of culture and wisdom in animals, affecting their potential for survival within the face of fixing conditions.</p>
<h2>What&#39;s next?</h2>
<p>We want to raised understand how whaling has affected the variety of old individuals in current whale populations and predict when the variety of old individuals will return to pre-whaling levels. Preliminary results suggest that it could take one other 100 years for whale populations to actually recuperate, even for species whose populations are the identical today as they were before whaling.</p>
<p>When it involves North Atlantic right whales, our research shows that at the same time as the population increases, management measures taken will not be enough to forestall these whales from dying far too young.</p>

<p>A physicist, a chemist and a mathematician walk right into a bar. It appears like the beginning of a nasty joke, but in my case it was the beginning of an idea that might change the best way scientists think concerning the history of the moon.  </p>
<p>The three of us were all involved in the moon, but from different perspectives: <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=qtAMp0MAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">As a geophysicist</a>I thought of his insides; <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=dZRAM9UAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Thorsten Kleine</a> studied his chemistry; And <a href="https://www.oca.eu/en/alessandro-morbidelli">Alessandro Morbidelli</a> desired to know what the formation of the moon could tell us <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2024.119120">how the planets were put together</a> 4.5 billion years ago. </p>
<p>When we got here together to debate how old the moon really was, having these diverse perspectives proved crucial. </p>
<h2>How was the moon formed?</h2>
<p>At a <a href="http://www.psrd.hawaii.edu/Dec98/reminisces.html">Conference in Hawaii</a> At the top of the Nineteen Eighties, a bunch of scientists solved the issue of the formation of the moon. Their research suggested that a <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/35089010">Mars-sized object crashed into early Earth</a>Molten material is thrown into space. This glowing material coalesced into the body now called the moon.</p>
<p>This story explained many things. For one thing, the moon has little or no <a href="https://clrn.uwo.ca/clrn-research/lunar-resources-and-isru/lunar-volatiles/">Material that evaporates easily</a>like water, because life began to melt. It only has one <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/moon/composition/">tiny iron core</a>since it was largely formed from the outer a part of the earth, which accommodates little or no iron. And it has a buoyant, white coloured crust <a href="http://www.psrd.hawaii.edu/Aug11/LMO-crystallization.html">Minerals that floated to the surface</a> because the molten moon solidified. </p>
<p>The vibrant, newly formed moon was initially very near Earth <a href="https://www.esa.int/Education/3._The_geostationary_orbit">approximately the space</a> that television satellites orbit. The early Moon would have triggered gigantic tides on the early Earth, which itself was mostly melted and spinning rapidly. </p>

<p>As the moon moved away, it passed certain points where its orbit was momentarily perturbed. These orbital perturbations were a very important a part of its history and a central a part of our hypothesis.</p>
<h2>When was the moon created?</h2>
<p>When the moon actually formed and moved away from Earth is a difficult query.</p>
<p>Thanks to the Apollo astronauts, scientists have one <a href="https://curator.jsc.nasa.gov/lunar/">Collection of moon rocks</a>whose age they&#8217;ll measure. The oldest rocks <a href="https://doi.org/10.1146/annurev-earth-031621-060538">are all about 4.35 billion years old</a>i.e. about 200 million years after that <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/solar-system-facts/">Birth of the solar system</a>. </p>
<p>Many geochemists, like my colleague Thorsten Kleine, suspected (not without reason) that the age of those rocks corresponds to the age of the moon. </p>
<p>But people like Alessandro Morbidelli, who study planet formation, didn&#39;t particularly like that answer. In their models, planets swept up many of the matter floating across the early solar system <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.icarus.2024.116109">long before 200 million years had passed</a>. An enormous, moon-forming impact at a later date than the rock samples suggested seemed fairly unlikely.</p>
<h2>What did we advise?</h2>
<p>This is where Kleine, Morbidelli and I got here into play. <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-08231-0">We followed up</a> on a suggestion from a 2016 study that found the moon could occasionally experience <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/nature19846">extreme warming events</a> during its slow journey outward from Earth. </p>
<p>This warming occurs in the identical way because the warming on Jupiter <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/jupiter/moons/io/">hyperactive volcanic moon Io</a>. The shape of the smaller body is compressed and stretched by the tides of the larger body. And just as a rubber ball heats up if you squeeze it enough, the rocks on Io and the Moon also heat up.</p>
<p>All rocks contain small internal clocks &#8211; radioactive elements that decay and permit researchers to decay <a href="https://www.nps.gov/subjects/geology/radiometric-age-dating.htm">Tell me how old the stone is</a>. But here&#39;s the important thing point: If the moon warmed enough, its clocks would lose their memory and only start keeping time once the moon cooled again. </p>
<p>In this image, the gathering of roughly 4.35 billion-year-old rocks doesn&#39;t tell us when the moon was formed, only when it underwent this tidal warming. This signifies that the moon&#39;s formation will need to have occurred earlier. </p>

<h2>What&#39;s next?</h2>
<p>As is usually the case in science, two groups got here up with the same idea at the identical time. <p>To test these hypotheses, more samples from the Moon are needed. Fortunately, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/15/science/far-side-moon-samples-chang-e-6/index.html">China&#39;s Chang&#39;e Mission 6</a> I just returned samples from the dark side of the moon in June 2024. If these samples also show many rocks, throughout 4.35 billion years old, that will be consistent with our story. When the ages are much older, we&#8217;ve to think up a brand new story. </p>
<p>Very often geochemists and geophysicists find yourself in earth and planetary sciences <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/science.288.5473.2002">different and contradictory hypotheses</a>. This is partly because these fields use several types of measurements, but in addition because they speak very different scientific languages. Overcoming this language barrier is difficult. </p>
<p>Our study is an example of how – sometimes – bridging this linguistic and scientific divide can profit researchers on either side.</p>

<p>Think back to the fundamental biology course you took in highschool. You&#39;ve probably heard about it <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/organelle">Organelles</a>these small “organs” in cells that form compartments with individual functions. For example, mitochondria produce energy, lysosomes recycle waste, and the cell nucleus stores DNA. Although each organelle has a distinct function, they&#8217;re similar in that every is roofed by a membrane.</p>
<p>Membrane-bound organelles have been the textbook standard for the way scientists organize cells <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/science.1172046">until they realized it within the mid-2000s</a> that some organelles don&#8217;t have to be wrapped in a membrane. Since then, researchers have discovered many more membraneless organelles which have significantly modified the way in which biologists view the chemistry and origin of life.</p>
<p>I used to be introduced to what are officially called membraneless organelles <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/nrm.2017.7">Biomolecular condensates</a>just a few years ago, as students <a href="https://albig.weebly.com/">in my laboratory</a> observed some unusual blobs in a cell nucleus. Unbeknownst to me, we had actually been working on biomolecular condensates for years. What I ultimately saw in these blobs opened my eyes to a complete recent world of cell biology.</p>
<h2>Like a lava lamp</h2>
<p>To get an idea of ​​what a biomolecular condensate looks like, imagine a lava lamp by which the clumps of wax fuse together, break apart, and fuse again. Condensates <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/mco2.223">are formed in roughly the identical way</a>although they are usually not product of wax. <p>Today the atmosphere of our neighboring planet Venus is as hot as a&#8230; <a href="https://fornopiombo.com/blogs/news/how-hot-are-pizza-ovens">Pizza oven</a> and drier than that <a href="https://www.discovery.com/exploration/driest-place-pictures">driest desert on earth</a> – but that wasn’t all the time the case. </p>
<p>Billions of years ago, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/0019-1035(83)90109-4">Venus had as much water as Earth has today</a>.  If this water was ever liquid, Venus may once have been habitable.</p>
<p>Over time, this water has been almost completely lost.  It helps to learn how, when and why Venus lost its water <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=l88dF-YAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Planetary scientists like me</a> Understand what makes a planet habitable – or what could cause a habitable planet to show into an uninhabitable world. </p>

<p>Scientists have theories that designate why many of the water has disappeared, but more water has disappeared than they predicted.</p>
<p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-024-07261-y">In a May 2024 study</a>my colleagues and I actually have revealed a brand new water removal process that went unnoticed for a long time but may explain this water loss mystery.</p>
<h2>Energy balance and early water loss</h2>
<p>The solar system has one <a href="https://doi.org/10.1006/icar.1993.1010">habitable zone</a> – a narrow ring across the sun wherein planets can have liquid water on their surface.  Earth is in the center, Mars is out on the too cold side, and Venus is out on the too hot side.  Where a planet sits on this habitability spectrum will depend on how much energy the planet receives from the Sun and the way much energy the planet radiates.</p>
<p>The theory as to how most of Venus&#39;s water loss occurred is said to this energy balance.  On early Venus, sunlight split the water in its atmosphere into hydrogen and oxygen.  Atmospheric hydrogen heats up a planet &#8211; like having too many blankets in your bed in summer. </p>
<p>When the planet gets too hot, it throws off the quilt: the hydrogen escapes into space in a stream, a so-called process <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/0019-1035(83)90212-9">hydrodynamic escape</a>.  Through this process, Venus was deprived of one among the foremost components of water.  It is unknown <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/0019-1035(83)90212-9">Exactly</a> <a href="https://doi.org/10.1006/icar.1999.6186">When</a> This process occurred, but probably inside the first billion years or so.</p>
<p>After many of the hydrogen was removed, hydrodynamic escape stopped, but some hydrogen remained.  It&#39;s like pouring out a water bottle &#8211; there&#8217;ll all the time be a number of drops left at the underside.  These leftover drops cannot escape in the identical way.  There should be one other process occurring on Venus that continues to remove hydrogen.</p>
<h2>Small reactions could make a giant difference</h2>
<p>Our <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-024-07261-y">New study shows</a> that an ignored chemical response in Venus&#39; atmosphere may produce enough escaping hydrogen to shut the gap between expected and observed water loss. </p>
<p>This is how it really works. In the atmosphere, gaseous HCO⁺ molecules, which consist of 1 atom each of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen and are positively charged, mix with negatively charged electrons because opposites attract. </p>
<p>But when the HCO⁺ and electrons react, the HCO⁺ breaks down right into a neutral carbon monoxide molecule, CO, and a hydrogen atom, H. This process prompts the hydrogen atom, which might then exceed the planet&#39;s escape velocity and escape into space.  The entire response is known as HCO⁺ dissociative recombination, but we prefer to call it DR for brief. </p>
<p>Water is the unique source of hydrogen on Venus, so DR effectively dries out the planet.  DR has likely existed throughout Venus&#39; history, and our work shows that it likely continues into the current.  This doubles the quantity of hydrogen escaping <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.pss.2006.04.022">previously calculated</a> by planetary scientists who&#8217;re turning our understanding of today&#39;s hydrogen leaks on Venus the other way up.</p>
<h2>Understanding Venus with data, models and Mars</h2>
<p>To study DR on Venus, we used each computer modeling and data evaluation.</p>
<p>The modeling actually began as a Mars project.  My Ph.D.  The research involved studying the conditions that make planets habitable for all times. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s11214-012-9946-5">There was once water on Mars too</a>although lower than Venus, and likewise lost most of it to space. </p>
<p>To understand hydrogen escape on Mars, I developed one <a href="https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2306.16396">Computational model of the Martian atmosphere</a> that simulates the atmospheric chemistry of Mars.  Although Mars and Venus are very different planets, they really have similar upper atmospheres, so my colleagues and I were in a position to extend the model to Venus. </p>
<p>We found that dissociative recombination of HCO⁺ within the atmospheres of each planets produces a whole lot of escaping hydrogen, consistent with the planet&#39;s measurements <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/maven/">Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN or MAVEN mission</a>a satellite orbiting Mars.</p>

<p>It can be invaluable to gather data in Venus&#39; atmosphere to support the model, but previous missions to Venus didn&#8217;t measure HCO⁺ &#8211; not since it wasn&#39;t there, but because they weren&#39;t designed to detect it.  However, they measured the reactants that produce HCO⁺ in Venus&#39; atmosphere. </p>
<p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/JA085iA13p07817">By analyzing measurements</a> prepared by <a href="https://astrobiology.nasa.gov/missions/pioneer-venus/">Pioneer Venus</a>a combined orbiter and probe mission that studied Venus from 1978 to 1992, and using our knowledge of chemistry, we&#8217;ve got shown that HCO⁺ must be present within the atmosphere in quantities much like those in our model.</p>
<h2>Follow the water</h2>
<p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-024-07261-y">Our work</a> has solved a part of the mystery of how water is lost from planets, which affects how habitable a planet is for all times.  We learned that water loss doesn&#39;t just occur , but over time through a mix of methods.</p>
<p>Today&#39;s faster lack of hydrogen from DR implies that overall it&#8217;s going to take less time to remove the remaining water from Venus.  This implies that if oceans were ever present on early Venus, they could have been present longer than scientists thought before water loss through hydrodynamic escape and the DR began.  This would give more time for possible life to emerge.  However, our results don&#8217;t mean that there have been definitely oceans or life &#8211; answering this query would require far more science for a few years to return.</p>
<p>There can also be a necessity for brand new Venus missions and observations. <a href="https://ssed.gsfc.nasa.gov/davinci/mission">Future</a> <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Envision_factsheet">Venus</a> <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/missions/veritas">Missions</a> will provide some atmospheric measurements, but they may not give attention to the upper atmosphere, where most HCO⁺ dissociative recombination occurs.  A future Venus upper atmosphere mission, much like the MAVEN mission on Mars, could significantly expand everyone&#39;s knowledge of how the atmospheres of terrestrial planets form and evolve over time. </p>
<p>With technological advances in recent a long time and a growing latest interest in Venus, now is a wonderful time to show our attention to Earth&#39;s sister planet.</p>

<p>Why exactly did the federal government care a lot about how North Korean men wore their hair?  Long hair, <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4157121.stm">the campaign argued</a>“consumes a lot of food” and thus endangers the “development of human intelligence” by depriving the brain of the crucial energy. </p>
<p>Aside from pseudoscientific notions, state media also suggested that hair represented something deeper.  The Minju Choson newspaper <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4157121.stm">claims</a> that hair is a “very important issue that shows the cultural standards and mental and moral state of people.” </p>
<p>This bizarre campaign might sound to a Western reader like one other idiosyncratic North Korean story.  But the concept hair can reflect an individual&#39;s character didn&#8217;t come from Kim Jong-il. </p>
<p>Until the early Twentieth century, people within the United States believed that hair could reveal the reality in regards to the person from whose head it sprouted.  Hair wasn&#39;t just a method of creative self-expression or political affiliation, because it was within the mid-Twentieth century—when it could signal to others that you just were a hippie, an entrepreneur, or a black nationalist. <p>It also had extraordinary significance in conversations about race.</p>
<h2>“Passions and inclinations prevailing” within the hair</h2>
<p>Americans once believed with surprising certainty that hairstyle, color, or texture could reveal a variety of private characteristics.  </p>
<p>In 1863, for instance, the literary magazine “The Knickerbocker” devoted 13 pages <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=FI8eAQAAMAAJ&#038;dq=%22considerations%20upon%20men%20whose%20hair%22&#038;pg=PA285#v=onepage&#038;q=%22considerations%20upon%20men%20whose%20hair%22&#038;f=false">defending men</a> who parted their hair down the center &#8211; a mode that was considered an indication of weakness. </p>
<p>Now a medical journal from Kansas City <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=qJ9XAAAAMAAJ&#038;dq=%22Criminals%20and%20their%20Characteristics%22%20%22kansas%20city%22&#038;pg=PA640#v=onepage&#038;q=%22in%20criminals,%20as%20a%20rule,%20the%20beard%20is%20scanty%22&#038;f=false">argued</a>1899: “Criminals usually have thin beards.”</p>
<p>In the 1870s, several newspapers printed an in depth taxonomy of the various temperaments that hair could communicate. </p>
<p>“Hard, straight hair” <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=L5gBAAAAYAAJ&#038;dq=%22hair%20and%20temperament%22&#038;pg=PA173#v=onepage&#038;q=%22hair%20and%20temperament%22&#038;f=false">For example</a>He signaled “a stubborn and tough character.”  Straight hair indicated “a melancholy but extremely constant character,” while individuals with auburn hair had “the highest capacity for enjoyment or suffering.”  Anyone who had coarse black hair had a “tendency toward sensuality.” </p>
<p>This taxonomy ended with a provocative suggestion that highlighted people&#39;s reverence for hair:</p>

<p>But greater than 100 years before reports linking hair to personality traits became common knowledge, white Americans were already using hair as a shorthand for classifying and interpreting race.</p>
<h2>What a shame for a person with long hair!</h2>
<p>Associations between race and hairstyle are somewhat familiar to us today. <p>English colonists in North America associated hair color and racial identity from the start of colonization.  In political proclamations and non secular tracts, colonial leaders denounced the long hair of Native Americans as evidence of their inherent barbarism.</p>
<p>Seventeenth-century ideas about difference—what we would today call racial difference—trusted way more <a href="http://www.jstor.org/stable/10.5309/willmaryquar.71.2.0310">Christian beliefs than on physical characteristics</a>, with colonial criticism of Native American hair practices relying heavily on biblical guidelines.  References to 1 Corinthians 11, <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+11&#038;version=GNV#en-GNV-28602">what asked</a>“Doesn’t nature itself teach you that it is a shame for a man to have long hair?”</p>
<p>In 1649, Massachusetts Bay Colony Governor John Endecott joined a gaggle of colonial judges <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=9No_AQAAMAAJ&#038;dq=Thomas%20Hutchinson%2C%20The%20History%20of%20the%20Massachusetts%20Bay%20Colony&#038;pg=PA151#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false">to sentence</a> Colonists grew their hair and declared that doing so was “contrary to the rule of the Word of God,” an allusion to 1 Corinthians 11. </p>
<p>Additionally, their proclamation argued that selecting such a cut was &#8220;rude and unmanly&#8221; and that male colonists who wore their hair long were in actual fact &#8220;deformed.&#8221;[d] What mattered was that Endecott and the judges categorically described “wearing long hair” as “in the manner of ruffians and barbarous Indians.”</p>
<p>To the colonizers, long hair wasn&#39;t only a random style adopted by some male colonists within the New World;  it was evidence of their unchristian moral corruption.  In critiques resembling Endecott&#39;s Proclamation, white colonists organized their world in accordance with a series of binaries that associated whiteness, Christianity, civilization, and masculinity with short hair;  and non-whiteness, paganism, barbarism and femininity with long hair.</p>
<h2>Take an example from the queue</h2>
<p>Two centuries later, similar associations between barbarism and men&#39;s hair length still existed, shaping the best way white Americans responded to the Chinese immigrants who got here to California after the invention of gold in 1848.</p>

<p>Almost uniformly, Chinese immigrants of Han descent wore long braided ponytails called cues, which they wore through the Qing Dynasty as a logo of their loyalty to the emperor.  (Because most Chinese immigrants in California during this time intended to eventually return to China, they didn&#8217;t cut their queues.) Because queues were very different from the short hairstyles that American men commonly wore, they fascinated white Americans, who consistently wore them mentioned images and print.</p>
<p>In the eyes of whites, nonetheless, the queue was not simply a novel hairstyle or a logo of political loyalty.  Instead, it quickly became clear that Chinese men weren&#8217;t only racially alien, but additionally barbaric, old-fashioned and backwards.</p>
<p>The importance of the queue became particularly clear when American newspapers discussed the top of the Qing Dynasty, when Chinese men in China and the United States broke their queues. </p>
<p>On June 18, 1911, the San Francisco Call described how lines were being “cut off by the thousands.”  That “the majority of Chinese men will wear their hair like the men of Europe and America do” was evidence that China was “finally…awakening from its centuries-old slumber.” </p>

<h2>If “castles” could enslave</h2>
<p>But the challenges of attaching racial intending to hair have never been greater than when hair entered the courtroom. </p>
<p>In the a long time before the Civil War, mixed-race slaves sometimes sued for his or her freedom, claiming that they weren&#8217;t actually black and subsequently couldn&#8217;t be enslaved.  In court, judges and lawyers often used hair as reliable biological evidence of racial identity.</p>
<p>In <a href="http://lawlibrary.wm.edu/wythepedia/index.php/Hudgins_v._Wrights">Hudgins vs. Wrights</a>, which reached the Virginia Supreme Court in 1806, the enslaved Wright family argued that they were descended from Native Americans on their mother&#39;s side, not Africans.  (Virginia had banned the enslavement of Native Americans in 1777.) </p>
<p>The judge ultimately ruled in favor of the Wrights and <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=8Xo0AQAAMAAJ&#038;dq=%22has%20stampt%20upon%20the%20African%22&#038;pg=PA133#v=onepage&#038;q=%22has%20stampt%20upon%20the%20African%22&#038;f=false">his decision</a> illustrates the authority that Hair possessed: </p>

<p>“Nature has endowed the African and his descendants with two distinctive characteristics […] which often remain visible long after the characteristic color difference has either disappeared or become doubtful;  a flat nose and woolly hair.  The latter of these features is the last to disappear…”</p>
</blockquote>
<p>In other words, in a Nineteenth-century courtroom, hair revealed black identity much more reliably than skin color.</p>
<p>Racial judgments have been rooted in haircuts, hair textures, and hair strands for hundreds of years.  And while it might probably be tempting to conclude that hair has at all times reflected the identity of its wearer, the haircut &#8211; like all elements of the past &#8211; has meant various things to people in several times and places.  Hair is each historically and culturally specific.</p>
<p>And before the Twentieth century, hair spoke louder than we could have ever imagined.</p>

<p>An 81-year-old Ohio man is charged with murder after he shot and killed a female Uber driver who he mistakenly believed was working with a fraudster and attempting to extort him, based on the Clark County Sheriff&#39;s Office.</p>
<p>According to a criminal criticism, William Brock shot Loletha Hall multiple times outside his South Charleston home on March 25.  Hall was taken to an area hospital where she died.</p>
<p>According to a news release from the sheriff&#39;s office, Brock told police that before the shooting, he received threatening calls from a male caller who claimed certainly one of Brock&#39;s relatives was in jail.</p>
<p>The caller then asked Brock to wire money for the relative&#39;s bail, and when Brock resisted, the caller threatened to harm him and his family.</p>
<p>When Hall, 61, arrived at Brock&#39;s apartment in her Uber, he shot her several times, the discharge said.</p>
<p>Brock believed Hall had a connection to the fraudulent caller and was going to kill him and his family, as indicated by a 911 call he made after shooting her, authorities said.</p>
<p>Police released dashcam video from Hall&#39;s vehicle showing Brock confronting them outside his home.</p>
<h2>“A terrible tragedy”</h2>
<p>According to the press release, Hall received a request via the Uber app to select up a package at Brock&#39;s apartment.  Authorities imagine she was “unfamiliar with the circumstances” surrounding the request.</p>
<p>Hall arrived in her Uber and dashcam video from her automotive shows her getting out of the automotive to confer with Brock.</p>
<p>According to the press release, she made no further demands of Brock aside from asking for the package she was purported to pick up.</p>
<p>Brock was arrested and charged with murder because police didn&#8217;t perceive an lively threat from Hall throughout the encounter and Brock did not call authorities for help, the sheriff&#39;s office said.</p>
<p>Brock pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and posted $200,000 bail on Wednesday, based on court documents.</p>
<p>CNN has reached out to Hall&#39;s family and Brock&#39;s defense attorney Paul Kavanagh for comment.</p>
<p>Uber is in touch with Hall&#39;s family and law enforcement, the corporate said.  &#8220;This is a terrible tragedy and our hearts continue to be with Loletha&#39;s loved ones as they mourn,&#8221; an Uber spokesperson said in an announcement to CNN.</p>
<p>“We are in contact with law enforcement and remain committed to supporting their investigation.”</p>
<p>Uber suspended the account of the one that ordered Hall&#39;s Uber to Brock&#39;s house, the corporate said.  According to the press release, authorities imagine the person was either the unique fraudster or an accomplice.</p>
<p>The company says it&#8217;s committed to the security of Uber drivers and has developed safety features including an in-app emergency button, route sharing features and the power to attach with a live safety agent.</p>
<p>It is unclear whether authorities have identified the owner of the account or made any further arrests.</p>
<p>CNN has reached out to the Clark County Sheriff&#39;s Office for more information.</p>
