<p><em>Boeing’s crew transport space capsule, <a href="https://www.boeing.com/space/starliner">the Starliner</a>returned to earth <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasa-decides-to-bring-starliner-spacecraft-back-to-earth-without-crew/">without his two-man crew</a> shortly after midnight Eastern Time on September 7, 2024. Its remote-controlled return marked the tip of a difficult test flight to the International Space Station during which two astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Sunita &#8220;Suni&#8221; Williams, remained on the station months longer than planned after NASA deemed the capsule unsafe for distant return resulting from engine failures.</em></p>
<p><em>Wilmore and Williams will remain on the International Space Station until February 2025 after which return to Earth. <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasas-spacex-crew-9-changes-ahead-of-september-launch/">in a SpaceX Dragon capsule</a>.</em></p>
<p><em>The Conversation US asked the previous commander of the International Space Station <a href="https://www.tamug.edu/coo/fossum-bio.html">Michael Fossum</a> about NASA&#39;s decision to return the spacecraft unmanned, the long run of the Starliner program, and the prolonged stay of its crew within the space station.</em></p>
<h2>What does this decision mean for NASA?</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.nasa.gov/humans-in-space/commercial-space/commercial-crew-program/commercial-crew-program-overview/">NASA receives orders</a> In 2014, Boeing and SpaceX were tasked with providing crew vehicles for the International Space Station as a part of the Commercial Crew Program. At the beginning of this system, most expected Boeing to take the lead resulting from its extensive experience in aerospace. </p>
<p>However, SpaceX was very fast with its recent rocket, <a href="https://www.spacex.com/vehicles/falcon-9/">the Falcon 9</a>and his <a href="https://www.spacex.com/vehicles/dragon/">Cargo ship, dragon</a>Although there have been some initial failures during testing, the corporate continued to construct, test and learn from every mistake. In 2020, SpaceX successfully launched its first test crew to the International Space Station.</p>

<h2>What does this decision mean for Boeing?</h2>
<p>I imagine that Boeing&#39;s status will ultimately suffer. The company is in direct competition with SpaceX. Now the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft <a href="https://spaceexplored.com/spacex-crewed-flights/">has accomplished several flights</a>It has proven to be a reliable solution to get to the space station and back. </p>
<p>It&#39;s vital to do not forget that this was a test flight for Starliner. Of course, program managers want every test flight to be perfect, but you may&#39;t predict every potential problem through ground testing. Not surprisingly, some problems arose &#8211; that&#39;s to be expected in a test flight. </p>

Breaking with tradition and leveraging business competitors to advance this system was an progressive move. <p>The biggest burden is on their families, who were prepared to welcome the crew back home in lower than two weeks and now should adjust to being unexpectedly separated for eight months. </p>
<p>Currently, NASA is coping with a ripple effect because there are more astronauts on the space station than expected. More people mean more consumables – like food and clothing – are needed. The space station has supported a big crew for brief periods of time up to now, but with nine crew members on board, the systems should work harder to <a href="https://www.space.com/astronaut-pee-iss-water-recycling-98-percent-milestone">purify treated drinking water</a>, <a href="https://science.howstuffworks.com/oxygen-made-aboard-spacecraft.htm">Generate oxygen and take away carbon dioxide</a> from their atmosphere.</p>
<p>Wilmore and Williams also devour food. They didn&#8217;t arrive with the clothing and other personal items they needed for an eight-month stay, so NASA has already begun increasing their deliveries by cargo ship. </p>
<h2>What does this decision mean for the long run?</h2>
<p>Human spaceflight is unbearably tough and relentlessly unforgiving. Millions of things should go right for a mission to achieve success. It&#39;s not possible to totally understand how systems will perform in a microgravity environment until they&#39;re tested in space. </p>
<p>NASA has experienced quite a few failures and near-failures in its try to put Americans on the moon. They lost the <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission/apollo-1/">Crew of Apollo 1 in a hearth</a> during a pre-flight test. <p>These programs have encountered setbacks and obstacles along the best way—and there will probably be more—but I haven&#39;t been this enthusiastic about human spaceflight since I used to be an 11-year-old cheering for Apollo and dreaming of leaving the primary human footprints on Mars.</p>

<p>&#8220;The entire Commercial Crew Program was a completely new endeavor,&#8221; said Caleb Henry, chief science officer at Quilty Space. &#8220;Previously, NASA had to rely on its own engineers to get people to the space station.&#8221;</p>
<p>Henry said this system allows NASA to &#8220;transfer some of those responsibilities to the private sector.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;There was some reluctance in Congress to take this approach,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It was only because Boeing threw its hat in the ring that Congress, and by extension NASA, felt confident enough to actually move forward with this program.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the last decade since then, Boeing has struggled to finish the six missions under its contract with NASA.</p>
<p>Of the nearly $5 billion Boeing has received to date to develop the Starliner, the corporate has spent $1.5 billion to make up for delays. Boeing recently launched its final test, a milestone manned mission that should be accomplished before NASA can certify the Starliner for deployment.</p>
<p>SpaceX has now accomplished over a dozen manned missions into space and has sent each NASA astronauts and personal individuals into space since 2020.</p>

<p>From my perspective as <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=PxIOz7cAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Space policy expert</a>The launch of Starliner represents one other significant milestone in the event of the business space industry. But the eventful history of the mission also shows how difficult the trail to space might be, even for an experienced company like Boeing.</p>
<h2>Origins and development</h2>
<p>After the NASA space shuttle was retired in 2011 <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/humans-in-space/commercial-space/commercial-crew-program/commercial-crew-program-overview/">NASA invited</a> Commercial space corporations assist the agency in transporting cargo and crew to the International Space Station. </p>
<p>In 2014, NASA chosen <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasa-chooses-american-companies-to-transport-u-s-astronauts-to-international-space-station/">Boeing and SpaceX</a> to construct their respective crew vehicles: Starliner and Dragon.</p>
<p><a href="https://boeing-jtti.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/01133556/02272024-Bkgd_Starliner.pdf">Boeing&#39;s vehicle, Starliner</a>, was built to hold as much as seven crew members to and from low Earth orbit.  For NASA missions to the International Space Station, it might probably carry as much as 4 people at a time and is designed to stay docked to the station for as much as seven months.  At 15 feet, the capsule the crew will sit in is barely larger than an Apollo command module or a SpaceX Dragon. </p>
<p>Boeing designed Starliner to be partially reusable to cut back the fee of attending to space.  Although <a href="https://blog.ulalaunch.com/blog/cft-atlas-v-primed-for-its-first-human-space-launch">the Atlas V</a> While the rocket that may carry it into space and the service module that supports the spacecraft are each expendable, the Starliner&#39;s crew capsule might be reused <a href="https://boeing-jtti.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/01133556/02272024-Bkgd_Starliner.pdf">as much as 10 times</a>, with a processing time of six months. <p>The development of Starliner was related to setbacks.  Although Boeing received $4.2 billion from NASA in comparison with $2.6 billion from SpaceX, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/07/26/boeing-has-lost-1point5-billion-developing-starliner-spacecraft-for-nasa.html">Boeing spent more</a> invested greater than $1.5 billion moreover in the event of the spacecraft. </p>
<p>Starliner&#39;s first unmanned test flight in 2019 was a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/07/science/boeing-starliner-nasa.html">Series of software and hardware failures</a> prevented it from reaching its planned orbit and docking with the International Space Station.  After testing a few of his systems, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasa-boeing-complete-successful-landing-of-starliner-flight-test/">it landed successfully</a> on the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.</p>
<p>In 2022, Starliner conducted one after identifying and implementing greater than 80 fixes <a href="https://www.space.com/19367-boeing-cst-100.html">second unmanned test flight</a>.  This time the vehicle managed to successfully dock with the International Space Station and land in New Mexico six days later.</p>

<p>Despite it, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/06/01/boeing-further-delays-first-starliner-astronaut-mission-for-nasa.html">Boeing was delayed</a> the primary manned launch for Starliner from 2023 to 2024 because of additional problems.  One of those was the Starliner&#39;s parachutes, which help slow the vehicle on its option to Earth.  Tests revealed that some connections were present in these parachute lines <a href="https://spacenews.com/parachute-and-wiring-issues-to-delay-starliner-crewed-test-flight/">weaker than expected</a>, which could have led to breakage.  A second problem was the usage of flammable tape, which could pose a hearth hazard.</p>
<p>An necessary query arising from these delays is why Starliner&#39;s development was so difficult.  For one, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/07/science/boeing-starliner-nasa.html">NASA officials admitted</a> that it didn&#8217;t provide as much oversight for Starliner because it did for SpaceX&#39;s Dragon since the agency was accustomed to Boeing.</p>
<p>And Boeing has experienced several <a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/business/boeing-aerospace/have-boeing-planes-really-had-more-problems-lately-look-at-the-numbers/">problems recently</a>, most notably with the protection of its aircraft.  astronaut <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/boeing-starliner-spacecraft-astronauts-first-piloted-flight/">Butch Wilmore denied</a> that Starliner&#39;s problems reflect these problems. </p>
<p>But <a href="https://payloadspace.com/the-uncertain-future-of-boeings-space-business/">several other Boeing space activities</a> Outside of the Starliner, there have also been mechanical failures and budget pressures, including with the Space Launch System.  This system is meant to be the predominant rocket <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/humans-in-space/artemis/">NASA&#39;s Artemis program</a>which plans to return humans to the moon for the primary time for the reason that Apollo era. </p>
<h2>Importance for NASA and business space travel</h2>
<p>Given these difficulties, Starliner&#39;s success will likely be necessary to Boeing&#39;s future space endeavors.  Even if SpaceX&#39;s Dragon can successfully transport NASA astronauts to the International Space Station, the agency needs a backup.  And that is where Starliner comes into play.</p>
<p>Following the <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/challenger-sts-51l-accident/">Challenger explosion in 1986</a> and that <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/remembering-columbia-sts-107/">Columbia shuttle disaster in 2003</a>NASA decommissioned the Space Shuttle in 2011.  The agency was left with few options for getting astronauts out and in of space.  With a second provider of business crew vehicles, NASA doesn&#8217;t need to depend on one company or one vehicle for space launches as before. </p>
<p>Perhaps more importantly, if Starliner is successful, it could compete with SpaceX.  However, there may be currently no overwhelming demand for space tourism, and Boeing does <a href="https://www.space.com/boeing-starliner-spacecraft-private-astronaut-nasa-focus">no plans to market Starliner</a> for tourism soon, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/charlesbeames/2019/09/30/commercial-competition-the-rocket-science-of-the-space-force/?sh=49a86b9f7701">Competition is essential</a> in every market to cut back costs and increase innovation. </p>
<p>There will probably be more such competition.  Sierra Space&#39;s Dream Chaser is scheduled to launch later this 12 months <a href="https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2024/02/dream-chaser-nasa-glenn/">Transport cargo</a> for NASA to the International Space Station.  A manned version of the spaceplane can also be being developed for the <a href="https://spaceref.com/newspace-and-tech/sierra-space-working-with-nasa-on-crewed-dream-chaser/">next round of NASA&#39;s business crew program</a>.  Blue Origin is <a href="https://www.geekwire.com/2023/blue-origin-nasa-orbital-crew-transport/">Collaboration with NASA</a> on this latest round of business crew contracts and the event of a lunar lander for the Artemis program.</p>

<p>Although SpaceX makes business spaceflight look relatively easy, Boeing&#39;s difficult experience with Starliner shows how difficult spaceflight continues to be, even for an experienced company. </p>
<p>Not only is Starliner necessary to NASA and Boeing, but it surely also shows that a couple of company can reach the business space industry.  A successful launch would also give NASA greater confidence within the industry&#39;s ability to support operations in Earth orbit because the agency focuses on future missions to the moon and beyond.</p>

<p>a part of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/humans-in-space/commercial-space/commercial-crew-program/">NASA&#39;s Commercial Crew Program</a>, this long-delayed mission will probably be the vehicle&#39;s first crewed launch. <p>The development of Starliner was related to setbacks.  Although Boeing received $4.2 billion from NASA in comparison with $2.6 billion from SpaceX, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/07/26/boeing-has-lost-1point5-billion-developing-starliner-spacecraft-for-nasa.html">Boeing spent more</a> invested greater than $1.5 billion moreover in the event of the spacecraft. </p>
<p>Starliner&#39;s first unmanned test flight in 2019 was a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/07/science/boeing-starliner-nasa.html">Series of software and hardware failures</a> prevented it from reaching its planned orbit and docking with the International Space Station.  After testing a few of his systems, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasa-boeing-complete-successful-landing-of-starliner-flight-test/">it landed successfully</a> on the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.</p>
<p>In 2022, Starliner conducted one after identifying and implementing greater than 80 fixes <a href="https://www.space.com/19367-boeing-cst-100.html">second unmanned test flight</a>.  This time the vehicle managed to successfully dock with the International Space Station and land in New Mexico six days later.</p>

<p>Despite it, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/06/01/boeing-further-delays-first-starliner-astronaut-mission-for-nasa.html">Boeing was delayed</a> the primary manned launch for Starliner from 2023 to 2024 resulting from additional problems.  One of those was the Starliner&#39;s parachutes, which help slow the vehicle on its strategy to Earth.  Tests revealed that some connections were present in these parachute lines <a href="https://spacenews.com/parachute-and-wiring-issues-to-delay-starliner-crewed-test-flight/">weaker than expected</a>, which could have led to breakage.  A second problem was the usage of flammable tape, which could pose a hearth hazard.</p>
<p>An essential query arising from these delays is why Starliner&#39;s development was so difficult.  For one, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/07/science/boeing-starliner-nasa.html">NASA officials admitted</a> that it didn&#8217;t provide as much oversight for Starliner because it did for SpaceX&#39;s Dragon since the agency was conversant in Boeing.</p>
<p>And Boeing has experienced several <a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/business/boeing-aerospace/have-boeing-planes-really-had-more-problems-lately-look-at-the-numbers/">problems currently</a>, most notably with the protection of its aircraft.  astronaut <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/boeing-starliner-spacecraft-astronauts-first-piloted-flight/">Butch Wilmore denied</a> that Starliner&#39;s problems reflect these problems. </p>
<p>But <a href="https://payloadspace.com/the-uncertain-future-of-boeings-space-business/">several other Boeing space activities</a> In addition, Starliner also experienced mechanical failures and budget pressures, including with the Space Launch System.  This system is meant to be the fundamental rocket <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/humans-in-space/artemis/">NASA&#39;s Artemis program</a>which plans to return humans to the moon for the primary time because the Apollo era. </p>
<h2>Importance for NASA and business space travel</h2>
<p>Given these difficulties, Starliner&#39;s success will probably be essential to Boeing&#39;s future space endeavors.  Even if SpaceX&#39;s Dragon can successfully transport NASA astronauts to the International Space Station, the agency needs a backup.  And that is where Starliner comes into play.</p>
<p>Following the <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/challenger-sts-51l-accident/">Challenger explosion in 1986</a> and that <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/remembering-columbia-sts-107/">Columbia shuttle disaster in 2003</a>NASA decommissioned the Space Shuttle in 2011.  The agency was left with few options for getting astronauts out and in of space.  With a second provider of economic crew vehicles, NASA doesn&#8217;t need to depend on one company or one vehicle for space launches as before. </p>
<p>Perhaps more importantly, if Starliner is successful, it could compete with SpaceX.  However, there&#8217;s currently no overwhelming demand for space tourism, and Boeing does <a href="https://www.space.com/boeing-starliner-spacecraft-private-astronaut-nasa-focus">no plans to market Starliner</a> for tourism soon, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/charlesbeames/2019/09/30/commercial-competition-the-rocket-science-of-the-space-force/?sh=49a86b9f7701">Competition is vital</a> in every market to cut back costs and increase innovation. </p>
<p>There will probably be more such competition.  Sierra Space&#39;s Dream Chaser is scheduled to launch later this yr <a href="https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2024/02/dream-chaser-nasa-glenn/">Transport cargo</a> for NASA to the International Space Station.  A manned version of the spaceplane can be being developed for the <a href="https://spaceref.com/newspace-and-tech/sierra-space-working-with-nasa-on-crewed-dream-chaser/">next round of NASA&#39;s business crew program</a>.  Blue Origin is <a href="https://www.geekwire.com/2023/blue-origin-nasa-orbital-crew-transport/">Collaboration with NASA</a> on this latest round of economic crew contracts and the event of a lunar lander for the Artemis program.</p>

<p>Although SpaceX makes business spaceflight look relatively easy, Boeing&#39;s rocky experience with Starliner shows how difficult spaceflight continues to be, even for an experienced company. </p>
<p>Not only is Starliner essential to NASA and Boeing, but it surely also shows that a couple of company can achieve the business space industry.
