<p>MOSS LANDING &#8211; Highway 1 was closed and evacuations were ordered within the Moss Landing community and Elkhorn Slough area after a serious fire broke out Thursday afternoon at a battery storage plant in Moss Landing in northern Monterey County.</p>
<p>The fire, which burned uncontrolled Thursday night and produced huge flames and dangerous clouds of black smoke, was reported at the ability on Highway 1 around 3 p.m., Monterey County spokesman Nicholas Pasculli said.</p>

<p>“It is imperative that residents obey the evacuation order and follow the instructions of the police and fire departments,” Pasculli said. “In this situation, we take the protection of life and property very seriously. We urge people to follow the evacuation order and move to a safe location.”</p>
<p>Evacuations of about 1,500 people have been ordered for areas from Moss Landing south of Elkhorn Slough, north of Molera Road and Monterey Dunes Way and west of Castroville Boulevard and Elkhorn Road to the ocean, he said.</p>
<p>Pasculli said the Monterey County Sheriff&#39;s Office called other agencies within the county to help with the emergency.</p>

<p>“It is a serious incident,” he said. “All resources from the county and our neighboring jurisdictions were deployed to assist with this incident.”</p>
<p>The plant belongs to the Texas company Vistra Energy and is considered one of the most important battery storage power plants on this planet. It incorporates tens of hundreds of lithium batteries that store electricity generated through the day from solar and other sources to be used at night. Such battery storage plants are a vital a part of California&#39;s efforts to convert most of its electricity generation to renewable sources.</p>
<p>“You can’t sugarcoat it. “This is a disaster,” Monterey County Supervisor Glen Church told KSBW-TV. “This is extremely disturbing.”</p>
<p>Church said the fireplace was &#8220;contained&#8221; in a concrete constructing whose roof had collapsed.</p>
<p>&#8220;We don&#39;t think there&#39;s any real danger of it expanding outward and penetrating further into where it&#39;s inside,&#8221; he said. “There are a lot of batteries in there and the system is on fire quite a lot.”</p>

<p>The plant is positioned on the location of a now-closed Fifties PG&#038;E Moss Landing natural gas plant, visible from its huge smokestacks near Moss Landing Harbor. The first phase was accomplished in 2020 and expanded to 750 megawatts in 2023. Vistra sells the electricity stored there to PG&#038;E, which also owns a separate 182-megawatt, 256-tesla battery storage facility on the north side of the location. “Megapack” battery packs. <p>Employees on the Vistra plant called the North Monterey County Fire Protection District for assistance after a fireplace was discovered on the 300-megawatt Phase I energy storage facility, company spokeswoman Jenny Lyon said in an email to this news organization.</p>

<p>Lithium battery fires are notoriously difficult to place out. They burn at high temperatures and may emit toxic gases that may cause respiratory problems, skin burns and eye irritation.</p>

<p>Fires broke out on the Vistra plant on September 4, 2021 and February 14, 2022. Investigations revealed that they were brought on by a malfunction of a sprinkler system that released water and caused several units to overheat.</p>

<p>Last summer, after two fires broke out at San Diego County battery storage facilities, San Diego County regulators asked county officials to impose stricter rules that may restrict battery storage facilities near homes, schools and other facilities. And when Vistra proposed constructing a big battery plant in Morro Bay, residents there approved a measure on the November ballot that they hoped would block construction.</p>
<p>Battery storage has increased sevenfold in California over the past five years, from 1,474 megawatts in 2020 to 10,383 megawatts last summer. One megawatt is sufficient to power 750 households.</p>
<p>On Thursday evening, the Castroville Recreation Center at 11261 Crane St. served as a brief evacuation point for individuals who needed to depart their homes.</p>
<p>Highway 1 is closed in each directions between Highway 183 and Struve Road. There isn&#8217;t any estimated time for the roadway to reopen.</p>

<p>Research shows that the mixture of <a href="https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/26460/the-chemistry-of-fires-at-the-wildland-urban-interface">Chemicals released</a> When man-made materials like these burn, what&#8217;s produced in a vegetation fire is different and potentially more toxic. <p>All of those symptoms, in addition to a wierd taste within the mouth, have been linked to people reporting that their home smelled different once they returned there every week after the hearth.</p>
<p>Many survey participants reported that the smells diminished over time. Most attributed the development in odor to the passage of time, cleansing surfaces and air ducts, replacing furnace filters, and removing carpets, textiles, and furniture from the house. Despite this, many still had symptoms.</p>
<p>We also found that living near numerous burned buildings was related to these health symptoms. We found that for each 10 additional buildings destroyed inside 820 feet (250 meters) of an individual&#39;s home, headaches increased by 21% and strange tastes of their mouth increased by 26%.</p>
<p>These symptoms are consistent with what can be expected from exposure to the chemicals we present in the ash and measured within the air within the few smoke-damaged homes we were in a position to examine intimately.</p>
<h2>Persistent symptoms and questions</h2>
<p>There are still many unanswered questions on the health risks posed by homes damaged by smoke and ash.</p>

Within about eight hours <a href="https://wildfiretoday.com/2022/01/07/marshall-fire-updated-damage-assessment-1084-residences-destroyed/">greater than 1,000 houses</a> and shops burned.</p>
<p>The fire left entire blocks in ashes, but below <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2022/01/04/marshall-fire-map-destroyed-damaged-homes-businesses/">Blocks of homes remained</a>apparently untouched. The owners of those homes could have initially been relieved. But fire damage may be deceptive, as many soon discovered.</p>
<p>When wildfires just like the Marshall Fire reach the forest-urban interface, they burn each vegetation and man-made materials. Vehicles and buildings burn, together with the whole lot inside them &#8211; electronics, paint, plastics, furniture.</p>
<p>Research shows that when man-made materials like these burn, <a href="https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/26460/the-chemistry-of-fires-at-the-wildland-urban-interface">The chemicals released are different</a> of what&#8217;s emitted when only vegetation burns. The smoke and ash can waft under doors and around windows in nearby homes, bringing chemicals that persist with partitions and other interior surfaces and proceed off-gassing for weeks to months, especially in warmer temperatures.</p>

We also created one <a href="https://cires.colorado.edu/news/how-mitigate-post-fire-smoke-impacts-your-home">Checklist for people after urban wildfires</a> in the longer term to assist them protect their health and reduce their risks after they return to smoke-damaged homes.</p>
<h2>Tests in private households found elevated levels of metals and VOCs</h2>
<p>In the times after the Marshall fire, residents quickly reached out to nearby scientists who study smoke and health risks from wildfires on the University of Colorado Boulder and area labs. People desired to know what was within the ashes and what was the reason for the lingering smells of their homes.</p>
<p>My colleagues discovered that we could test in houses <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s11869-023-01376-3">increased amounts of metals and PAHs – polycyclic fragrant hydrocarbons – within the ash</a>. We also found elevated VOCs – volatile organic compounds – in air samples. Some VOCs, comparable to <a href="https://www.niehs.nih.gov/health/topics/agents/dioxins">Dioxins</a>, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/chemical-emergencies/chemical-fact-sheets/benzene.html">benzene</a>, <a href="https://wwwn.cdc.gov/tsp/substances/ToxSubstance.aspx?toxid=39">formaldehyde</a> And <a href="https://wwwn.cdc.gov/tsp/substances/ToxSubstance.aspx?toxid=25">PAHs</a>may be toxic to humans. Benzene is a <a href="https://wwwn.cdc.gov/TSP/substances/ToxSubstance.aspx?toxid=14">known to be carcinogenic</a>.</p>

<p>People desired to know if the chemicals that entered their homes that day could harm their health.</p>
<p>At this time, we were unable to search out any information concerning the physical health effects of individuals returning to smoke-filled homes after a wildfire. To search for patterns, we <a href="https://www.marshallresilience.com/survey">residents surveyed</a> affected by the hearth six months, one yr and two years later.</p>
<h2>Symptoms 6 months after the hearth</h2>
<p>We also discovered this six months after the hearth <a href="http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsestair.4c00258">Many people reported symptoms</a> This was consistent with the health risks related to smoke and ash from fires.</p>
<p>More than half (55%) of people that responded to our survey said they experienced a minimum of one symptom that they attributed to the Marshall Fire six months after the hearth. The mostly reported symptoms were itchy or watery eyes (33%), headache (30%), dry cough (27%), sneezing (26%) and sore throat (23%).</p>

<p>All of those symptoms, in addition to an odd taste within the mouth, have been linked to people reporting that their home smelled different after they returned there every week after the hearth. </p>
<p>Many survey participants reported that the smells diminished over time. Most attributed the advance in odor to the passage of time, cleansing surfaces and air ducts, replacing furnace filters, and removing carpets, textiles, and furniture from the house. Despite this, many still had symptoms.</p>
<p>We found that living near numerous burned buildings is related to these health symptoms. For every 10 additional buildings destroyed inside 820 feet (250 meters) of an individual&#39;s home, there was a 21% increase in headaches and a 26% increase in strange tastes within the mouth.</p>
<p>These symptoms are consistent with what can be expected from exposure to the chemicals we present in the ash and measured within the air within the few smoke-damaged homes we were in a position to examine intimately.</p>
<h2>Persistent symptoms and questions</h2>
<p>There are still many unanswered questions on the health risks posed by homes damaged by smoke and ash.</p>
<p>For example, we don&#39;t yet know what the long-term health consequences is perhaps for people living with gases from wildfire smoke and ash of their homes.</p>

<p>People desired to know whether the chemicals that entered their homes that day could harm their health.</p>
<p>At this time, we were unable to seek out any information concerning the physical health effects of individuals returning to smoke-filled homes after a wildfire. To search for patterns, we <a href="https://www.marshallresilience.com/survey">residents surveyed</a> affected by the hearth six months, one 12 months and two years later.</p>
<h2>Symptoms 6 months after the hearth</h2>
<p>We also discovered this six months after the hearth <a href="http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsestair.4c00258">Many people reported symptoms</a> This was consistent with the health risks related to smoke and ash from fires.</p>
<p>More than half (55%) of people that responded to our survey said they experienced a minimum of one symptom that they attributed to the Marshall Fire six months after the hearth. The mostly reported symptoms were itchy or watery eyes (33%), headache (30%), dry cough (27%), sneezing (26%) and sore throat (23%).</p>

<p>All of those symptoms, in addition to an odd taste within the mouth, have been linked to people reporting that their home smelled different once they returned there every week after the hearth. </p>
<p>Many survey participants reported that the smells diminished over time. Most attributed the development in odor to the passage of time, cleansing surfaces and air ducts, replacing furnace filters, and removing carpets, textiles, and furniture from the house. Despite this, many still had symptoms.</p>
<p>We found that living near numerous burned buildings is related to these health symptoms. For every 10 additional buildings destroyed inside 820 feet (250 meters) of an individual&#39;s home, there was a 21% increase in headaches and a 26% increase in strange tastes within the mouth.</p>
<p>These symptoms are consistent with what could be expected from exposure to the chemicals we present in the ash and measured within the air within the few smoke-damaged homes we were capable of examine intimately.</p>
<h2>Persistent symptoms and questions</h2>
<p>There are still many unanswered questions on the health risks posed by homes damaged by smoke and ash.</p>
<p>For example, we don&#39;t yet know what the long-term health consequences could be for people living with gases from wildfire smoke and ash of their homes.</p>
<p>We found a big one <a href="http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsestair.4c00258">Decrease within the number of individuals</a> report symptoms one 12 months after the hearth. However, 33% of individuals whose homes were affected still reported a minimum of one symptom that they attributed to the hearth. About the identical percentage also reported a minimum of one symptom two years after the hearth. </p>

<h2>Tips for shielding yourself after future wildfires</h2>
<p>Forest fires are <a href="https://par.nsf.gov/biblio/10442427">More and more houses and other buildings are burning down</a> As increasingly more people move into the interface between wilderness and city, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2213815120">temperatures are rising</a> and the hearth season is lengthening.</p>
<p>It will be confusing to know what to do if your property survives a close-by wildfire. To help, my colleagues and I put together one <a href="https://cires.colorado.edu/news/how-mitigate-post-fire-smoke-impacts-your-home">Website with steps to take</a> If your property has ever been invaded by smoke or ash from a forest fire.</p>
<p>Here are a few of those steps:</p>
<ul>

<p>When you&#39;re ready to scrub your property, start by protecting yourself. Wear a minimum of an N95 (or KN95) mask, in addition to gloves, goggles, and clothing that covers your skin.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Vacuum floors, curtains and furniture. However, avoid harsh chemical cleaners as they&#8217;ll react with the chemicals within the ash.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Clean your HVAC filter and ducts to forestall further spread of ash. Portable air purifiers with carbon filters might help remove VOCs.</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.adh8263">A current scientific study</a> documents how cleansing all surfaces in a house can reduce VOC reservoirs and lower VOC concentrations in indoor air. </p>

<p>Children born worldwide in 2020 will experience <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/science.abi7339">twice as many forest fires</a> over the course of their lives in comparison with those born in 1960. In California and other western states, frequent wildfires are as much a component of summer and fall as popsicles and candy on Halloween.</p>
<p>Forest fires produce high-quality particulate matter, or PM₂.₅, which suffocate the air and penetrate deep into the lungs. Researchers know that short-term exposure to PM₂.₅ from forest fires can <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envadv.2022.100179">Acute care visits</a> for cardiovascular problems reminiscent of asthma. However, the long-term effects of repeated exposure to PM₂.₅ from wildfires on chronic diseases are unclear. </p>
<p>One reason for that is that science has not yet reached a consensus on how best to measure this sort of temporary but sustained stress. <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=LjrwHBMAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Environmental epidemiologists</a> And <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=lSdMXgQAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Health Scientist</a> Like us, we typically aggregate long-term exposure to total PM₂.₅ &#8211; which comes from power plants, industry and traffic &#8211; as a mean exposure over a yr. This is probably not useful when measuring exposure from wildfires. Unlike, for instance, traffic-related air pollution, PM₂.₅ levels from wildfires fluctuate widely over the course of the yr. </p>
<p>To improve health and justice research, our team <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2306729121">developed five metrics</a> which higher capture the long-term impact of forest fire PM₂.₅.</p>
<h2>Measuring fluctuating PM₂ levels during forest fires</h2>
<p>To understand why current measurements of PM₂.₅ from wildfires don&#8217;t adequately capture a person&#39;s long-term exposure, we&#8217;d like to take a look at the concept of averages.</p>
<p>Suppose the common PM₂.₅ level over a yr is 1 microgram per cubic meter. An individual may very well be exposed to 1 microgram per cubic meter each day for one year, or 365 micrograms per cubic meter on a single day.</p>
<p>Although these two scenarios end in the identical annual average exposure, they could have very different biological effects. <p>Scientists want to raised understand what such extreme stress means for human health in the long run. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envpol.2023.121041">Previous studies</a> Long-term PM₂.₅ exposure from wildfires focused totally on people living near a big fire and examined their health status years later, excluding any recent exposures that occurred between baseline and follow-up.</p>
<p>Recent studies have examined long-term exposure to wildfire PM₂.₅, which changes over time. For example, researchers reported associations between exposure to wildfire PM₂.₅ over two years and the danger of death from cancer and other causes in Brazil. This work was also based on <a href="https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pmed.1004103">long-term average exposure</a> and extreme exposures from periodic wildfire events were in a roundabout way measured. Because the study didn&#8217;t assess this, we have no idea whether a selected pattern of long-term PM₂.₅ exposure from wildfires was more harmful to health.</p>
<p>Most days, people are usually not exposed to wildfire particle pollution. However, some days, wildfire pollution could be very high. We currently have no idea whether just a few very bad days or many barely bad days pose a greater health risk.</p>
<h2>A brand new framework</h2>
<p>How can we arrive at more realistic estimates that capture the big peaks in PM₂.₅ levels that folks are exposed to during wildfires? </p>
<p>When it involves the particulate matter exposure people experience from wildfires, exposure scientists—researchers who study contact between people and pollutants within the environment—consider frequency, duration, and intensity. These interlocking aspects help describe the true burden on the body during a wildfire. </p>
<p>In our recent study, our team suggested a <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2306729121">Framework for measuring long-term exposure to wildfire PM₂.₅</a> that takes under consideration the frequency, duration, and intensity of wildfires. We applied air quality models to California wildfire data from 2006 to 2020 and derived recent metrics that capture a spread of exposure types. </p>

<p>One metric we&#8217;ve developed is the variety of days with wildfire PM₂.₅ pollution over a protracted time frame, which may discover even the smallest pollution. Another metric is the common concentration of wildfire PM₂.₅ throughout the week with the best smoke pollution over a protracted time frame, which highlights the locations with the best pollution. We have also developed several other metrics which may be more useful depending on the impacts being studied.</p>
<p>Interestingly, these values ​​were highly correlated with one another, suggesting that on many days there was no less than some amount of PM₂₅ in wildfires. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2306729121">had the best values ​​overall</a>While this may occasionally complicate the choice making between different exposure patterns, the appropriateness of every measure depends partly on the health effects we&#8217;re studying.  </p>
<h2>Environmental injustice</h2>
<p>We also examined whether certain racial and ethnic groups were exposed to above-average levels of high-quality particulate matter from wildfires. We found that <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2306729121">different groups were most in danger</a> depending on the yr. </p>
<p>Consider 2018 and 2020, two years of major wildfires in California. The census tracts most affected by any measure were primarily non-Hispanic whites in 2018 and Hispanics in 2020. This is sensible, since non-Hispanic whites make up about 41.6% of California&#39;s population and Hispanics make up 36.4%. </p>
<p>To understand whether other groups were exposed to excess exposure to wildfire PM₂.₅, we made relative comparisons. That is, we compared the actual exposure to wildfire PM₂.₅ of every racial and ethnic group to what we might have expected in the event that they had been exposed to the national average. </p>
<p>We found that Indigenous communities were most exposed, exposed to 1.68 times more PM₂.₅ than expected. In comparison, non-Hispanic white Californians were exposed to 1.13 times more PM₂.₅ than expected, and multiracial Californians were exposed to 1.09 times greater than expected.</p>

<p>Rural tribal areas had the best average PM₂.₅ concentrations from wildfires – 0.83 micrograms per cubic meter – of all census tracts in our study. A big portion of Native Americans in California live in rural areas, often with <a href="https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0205825">higher forest fire risk</a> resulting from a long time of poor forest management, including the legal suppression of cultural slash-and-burn practices, which studies have shown <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2116264119">Help reduce catastrophic wildfires</a>. Recent <a href="https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB332">State laws</a> has eliminated liability risks related to cultural fires on indigenous lands in California. </p>
<p>Understanding the causes and health effects of high long-term exposure to wildfire PM₂.₅ amongst Native Americans and Alaska Natives might help <a href="https://www.ihs.gov/newsroom/factsheets/disparities/">significant differences in health</a> between these groups and other Americans.</p>

<p>When wildfire smoke is within the air, doctors urge people to <a href="https://www.aqmd.gov/home/air-quality/wildfire-health-info-smoke-tips">Stay indoors</a> to avoid inhaling harmful particles and gases. But what happens to trees and other plants that can&#8217;t escape the smoke?</p>
<p>As it seems, they could react in an identical strategy to us: some trees essentially close their windows and doors and hold their breath.</p>
<p>As <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=NrY_It8AAAAJ&#038;hl=en">atmospheric</a> And <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=XpzGDEUAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Chemist</a>we investigate the air quality and ecological impacts of wildfire smoke and other pollutants. In a study that began by accident when smoke flooded our research site in Colorado, we were capable of <a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2023GL106667">watch in real time</a> how the leaves of living pine trees reacted. </p>
<h2>How plants breathe</h2>
<p>Plants have pores on the surface of their leaves called stomata. These pores are much like our mouths, except that plants breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen, while we breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. </p>

<p>Both humans and plants breathe in other chemicals from the air around them and breathe out chemicals produced in them – some humans smell coffee, some trees smell pine. </p>
<p>However, unlike humans, leaves breathe out and in concurrently, meaning they continuously absorb and release atmospheric gases.</p>
<h2>Evidence from over a century of research</h2>
<p>At the start of the twentieth century, scientists studying trees in heavily polluted areas discovered that trees chronically exposed to pollution from coal combustion <a href="https://doi.org/10.1086/333374">Black grains clog the leaf pores</a> through the plants. They suspected that the substance in these granules was partly produced by the trees, but since no instruments were available on the time, the chemistry of those granules was never investigated, nor was the effect on plant photosynthesis. </p>
<p>Most modern research on the results of wildfire smoke has focused on crops and the <a href="https://ageconsearch.umn.edu/record/336005?ln=en&#038;v=pdf">The results were contradictory</a>.</p>
<p>For example, a study of several crop and wetland areas in California showed that smoke scatters light in a way that plants <a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2019JG005380">more efficient</a> in photosynthesis and growth. However, a laboratory study during which plants were exposed to artificial smoke found that plant productivity decreased during and after smoke exposure – although these plants <a href="https://doi.org/10.1155/2010/438930">recovered after a couple of hours</a>.</p>
<p>There is further evidence that wildfire smoke can negatively affect plants. You may even have tried one before: When grapes are exposed to smoke, <a href="https://today.oregonstate.edu/news/oregon-state-researchers-make-breakthrough-understanding-chemistry-wildfire-smoke-wine">Wine could also be contaminated</a>.</p>
<h2>What makes smoke toxic even removed from the hearth</h2>
<p>As smoke from wildfires travels long distances, it evaporates in sunlight and undergoes chemical changes. </p>
<p>The mixture of volatile organic compounds, nitrogen oxides and sunlight is <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/wildfire-smoke-reacts-with-city-pollution-creating-new-toxic-air-hazard/">Generate ground-level ozone</a>which may result in <a href="https://www.lung.org/clean-air/outdoors/what-makes-air-unhealthy/ozone">Respiratory problems in humans</a>. It can even damage plants by destroying the leaf surface, oxidizing plant tissue and slowing down photosynthesis.</p>

<p>While scientists typically assume that urban areas are major sources of ozone that affect crops downwind, smoke from forest fires is a <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/wildfire-smoke-reacts-with-city-pollution-creating-new-toxic-air-hazard/">emerging concern</a>Other compounds, including nitrogen oxides, can even <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.abm9909">Damage plants</a> and reduce photosynthesis.</p>
<p>In summary, studies suggest that wildfire smoke interacts with plants, but in ways in which will not be yet fully understood. This lack of research is attributable to the problem of studying the results of smoke on the leaves of living plants within the wild: wildfires are difficult to predict and being in smoky environments could be dangerous.</p>
<h2>Accidental research – in the midst of a forest fire</h2>
<p>We didn&#8217;t want to check how plants react to wildfire smoke. Rather, we wanted to know how plants release volatile organic compounds – the chemicals that make forests smell like forests, but additionally <a href="https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.accounts.0c00116">affect air quality and even change cloud cover</a>.</p>
<p>Fall <a href="https://www.nifc.gov/fire-information/statistics">2020 was a foul season</a> for wildfires within the Western United States, and thick smoke wafted through a field where we were working within the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.</p>
<p>On the primary morning of heavy smoke, we conducted our usual test to measure photosynthesis on the leaf level of ponderosa pines. We were surprised to seek out that the tree&#39;s pores were completely closed and photosynthesis was almost zero.</p>
<p>We also measured the leaves’ emissions of volatile organic compounds and located very low levels. This implies that <a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2023GL106667">the leaves didn&#8217;t “breathe”</a> – They didn&#8217;t breathe within the carbon dioxide they should grow or breathe out the chemicals they normally release.</p>

<p>Given these unexpected results, we decided to force photosynthesis and see if we could &#8220;defibrillate&#8221; the leaf and get it back to its normal rhythm. By changing the temperature and humidity of the leaf, we cleared the leaf&#39;s &#8220;airways&#8221; and saw a sudden improvement in photosynthesis and a rise in volatile organic compounds.</p>
<p>Our months of knowledge have shown that some plants reply to heavy smoke clouds from wildfires. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2023GL106667">by closing their stock exchange</a> with outside air. They effectively hold their breath, but not before they&#8217;ve been exposed to the smoke.</p>
<p>We suspect a couple of processes that might have caused the leaf pores to shut: Smoke particles could coat the leaves and form a layer that forestalls the pores from opening. Smoke could also penetrate the leaves and clog their pores, leaving them sticky. Or the leaves could physically react to the primary signs of smoke and shut their pores before they get the worst of it. </p>
<p>It might be a mix of those and other answers.</p>
<h2>The long-term effects are still unknown</h2>
<p>Exactly how long the results of smoke from wildfires last and what long-term effects repeated smoke exposure has on plants, including trees and crops, remains to be unclear.</p>

<p>As fires change into more frequent, this smoke is making a public health crisis.</p>
<p>In a brand new study published within the journal Science Advances, we found that wildfire smoke likely contributes <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.adl1252">greater than 52,000 premature deaths</a> in all of California from 2008 to 2018 alone, with a <a href="https://www.epa.gov/environmental-economics/mortality-risk-valuation">economic impact</a> save greater than $430 billion in deaths. </p>
<p>Previous studies have examined the short-term health risks of wildfire smoke. However, few studies have examined the extent to which exposure to wildfire smoke accumulates over years and shortens people&#39;s lives.</p>

Years of extinguishing all forest fires has <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/22/us/forest-fires-fighting-history.html?smid=url-share">also kept small fires</a> by clearing the undergrowth, which implies that the fires that break out have more fuel.</p>
<p>As fires change into more common in all of our lives, it is crucial for communities to grasp that the health risk from smoke pollution can also be increasing.</p>
<h2>Health risks</h2>

<p>Inhalation of PM<sub>2.5</sub> may cause short-term respiratory problems in vulnerable populations reminiscent of asthmatics and the elderly. It also causes long-term damage by causing the formation of <a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/environsciproc2023026118">chronic illness</a>including arteriosclerosis, asthma, reduced lung function and diabetes. One reason for that is the body&#39;s inflammatory response to inhaling air pollutants.</p>

<p>Wildfire smoke comprises quite a lot of chemicals. A growing body of research suggests that wildfire PM<sub>2.5</sub> can have unique physical and chemical components that increase toxicity. For example, a study from the University of California, Davis, showed that forest fire smoke <a href="https://doi.org/10.1289%2Fehp.0800166">caused more inflammation within the lungs</a> of rats as PM<sub>2.5</sub> from other sources reminiscent of cars and industry. This makes the pollutant <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-021-21708-0">potentially harmful to human respiratory health</a> in comparison with the everyday PM<sub>2.5</sub> to which individuals are exposed in urban environments.</p>
<h2>The problem with forest fire smoke</h2>
<p>We examined the long-term health effects of inhaling wildfire smoke. The results from over a decade suggest that in years with many fires – reminiscent of 2017 and 2018 – wildfire smoke contributed to greater than 10,000 deaths annually in California. By comparison, about <a href="https://www.ots.ca.gov/ots-and-traffic-safety/score-card/">4,000 people die in traffic accidents in California</a> annually.</p>

<p>Although most fires occur in rural, forested areas, smoke can travel a whole bunch or hundreds of miles, so health impacts are widespread in urban areas.</p>

The effectiveness of varied smoke management measures shouldn&#8217;t be well-known and <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/14651858.CD013441.pub2">may vary</a> depending on small implementation details, similar to: <a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2021GH000482">matches like a mask</a> the wearer&#39;s face, whether exterior doors and windows close tightly, and whether filters are properly installed and replaced incessantly enough.</p>
<h2>Improving smoke monitoring and prediction</h2>
<p>The U.S. has an in depth air quality monitoring and forecasting system that helps with early warning.  It uses ground-based air quality monitors, satellite distant sensing systems to detect smoke and fires and <a href="https://fireaq.uiowa.edu/">Computer systems</a> The <a href="https://portal.airfire.org/">Putting observations together</a> with wind, <a href="https://fluid.nccs.nasa.gov/wxmaps/chem2d/?region=nam,">Chemistry</a> And <a href="https://digital.mdl.nws.noaa.gov/airquality/?element=ozone01_bc&#038;mapcenter=-96.00%2C40.00&#038;mapzoom=5&#038;subregion=CONUS&#038;region=CONUS">Weather</a>.  These are supplemented by <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/research/news/highlights/continued-success-u.s.-interagency-wildland-fire-air-quality-response-program">expert guidance</a> by meteorologists.</p>
<p>However, for average residents attempting to make decisions in regards to the safety of outside activities, the present forecasting system is lacking.  This is especially true when smoke intrudes from distant fires or when rapidly changing smoke emission rates and sophisticated wind patterns end in conflicting forecasts and suggestions.</p>

<p>Just a few key improvements would go a good distance <a href="https://wpo.noaa.gov/improving-wildfire-prediction-with-convection-allowing-models/">practical decision making</a> across the smoke of a wildfire.  More accurate 10-day and neighborhood-level forecasts would help communities plan ahead.  Bringing together seasonal weather forecasts of precipitation, humidity and wind with satellite assessments of wildfire fuel conditions could also improve emergency planning.</p>
<p>Maintaining a powerful air quality monitoring network can be necessary.  However, state and native government authorities have reduced this <a href="https://www.gao.gov/assets/gao-21-38.pdf">Number of floor monitors by approx. 10%</a> from its peak in 2001. Smoke estimates from satellites and low-cost portable sensors could be helpful, but they work best after they could be cross-calibrated with a well-maintained network of high-precision monitors.</p>
<h2>We still have lots to learn</h2>
<p>More effective adaptations to smoke require more research to higher understand the results of repeated exposure to wildfire smoke and the compound hazards that arise when smoke occurs concurrently with other challenges similar to extreme heat.</p>
<p>Community responses like providing clean air shelters — the equivalent of a cooling center in extreme heat — are gaining attention, but they exist <a href="https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-23-104723">limited instructions only</a> about what constitutes a clean air shelter and where and when it could be used.</p>
<p>Living with smoke is becoming a brand new reality that individuals across much of North America will proceed to grapple with this yr and prepare for in the longer term.</p>

<p>A cannabis grow camp in East Oakland went bust early on the morning of April twentieth.  up in smoke.</p>
<p>The fire broke out shortly after 4:20 a.m. in an occupied mobile home parked directly in front of the warehouse at 1000 fortieth Avenue in East Oakland.  Ten fire engines and nearly 60 firefighters responded to the three-alarm blaze and had it contained by 6:05 a.m., Oakland Fire Department spokesman Michael Hunt said.</p>
<p>No injuries were reported.</p>
<p>Juana Ochoa lives two houses away from the cannabis cultivation facility.  She woke up this morning to banging noises and initially thought that somebody was setting off fireworks on the road.  When she opened her front door to look outside, she saw the RV on her street burst into flames.</p>
<p>Ochoa watched because the flames climbed toward the ability cables hanging overhead between two streetlights.  The wires began emitting sparks, she said, after which fell onto the warehouse, which then caught fire.</p>
<p>Ochoa, who has lived on this street together with her family for 20 years, said she often sees among the homeless people living in RVs parked on her street and lighting fires to maintain warm.</p>
<p>“Often they leave the fires burning all night and walk away,” Ochoa said.  “Here you are – putting everyone at risk and look what happens.”</p>
<p>It is unclear whether the cannabis cultivation site was legally permitted.  A security official on the scene said the owners had just began their business.</p>
<p>Marijuana is legal in California, but business owners must obtain licenses and permits to grow the plant commercially.</p>
