<p>Flight price, departure times, flight duration – these are the standard considerations for travelers who need to book a flight.</p>
<p>But now increasingly persons are taking note of a brand new factor: the aircraft itself.   </p>
<p>One in five travellers said they&#8217;re doing more research on the aircraft they need to fly on before booking, while barely more (22%) said they&#8217;ll limit their air travel for the remainder of the 12 months, in line with a survey conducted by the<strong> </strong>Digital analytics company Quantum Metric.</p>
<p>Overall, 55 percent of travelers said that they had modified their booking behavior attributable to current news about aircraft and airlines, the survey shows.  </p>
<p>Boeing was not mentioned directly within the survey, but since a door panel was blown out of an Alaska Airlines plane on January 5, 2024, regular media coverage of the corporate &#8211; from its quality control to its business ethos &#8211; has dominated headlines.</p>

<p>These stories have drawn consumer attention to Boeing&#39;s aircraft, a market that travelers had previously ignored, says Danielle Harvey, global vp and head of travel and hospitality strategy at Quantum Metric.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our research suggests that passengers are doing more research to better understand Boeing aircraft and potentially avoid them,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>The survey also found that 13% of respondents avoid low-cost airlines to feel safer when flying.</p>
<p>“But that doesn’t make sense,” says Brendan Sobie, independent aviation analyst and founding father of Sobie Aviation.</p>
<p>&#8220;First, there are more low-cost airlines operating Airbus (A320) than Boeing (737), especially in Asia,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And the Boeing problems obviously affect all airlines, regardless of their business model.&#8221;</p>

<h2 class="ArticleBody-subtitle"><a id="headline0"></a>Fears increase, risks decrease</h2>

<p>As disturbing because the recent headlines about Boeing<strong> </strong>Be that as it could, aviation safety is improving from decade to decade, says Arnold Barnett, professor of statistics on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and co-author of a <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0969699724001066?dgcid=author#appsec2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Research on the risks of business flights.</a></p>

<p>Commercial safety standards might be judged by a lot of metrics—from mileage to flight hours—but in line with MIT News, Barnett selected “deaths per boarding passenger” since it answers an easy query: If you have got a boarding pass for an airplane, what are the probabilities of dying?</p>

<p>According to MIT News, Barnett cites several aspects which have made flying safer. These include &#8220;technological advances such as collision avoidance systems on airplanes, extensive training, and the consistent work of organizations such as the Federal Aviation Agency and the National Transportation Safety Board.&#8221;</p>
<p>However, the report notes geographical differences that divide the world into three categories when it comes to flight safety:</p>
<ul>
<li>Level 1: United States, European Union and other parts of Europe, in addition to Australia, Canada, China, Israel, Japan and New Zealand</li>
<li>Tier 2: Bahrain, Bosnia, Brazil, Brunei, Chile, Hong Kong, India, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.</li>
<li>Level 3: All other countries</li>
</ul>
<p>According to MIT researchers, the chance of death on Level 1 and a pair of flights will drop to 1 per 80 million passengers between 2018 and 2022.</p>
<p>In Tier 3 countries, the chance of death was 36 times higher than in Tier 1 countries between 2018 and 2022, the report said. But even in those countries, the variety of deaths per boarding almost halved during that period, Barnett noted.</p>

<p>The study is a historical evaluation of business aviation safety and doesn&#8217;t predict how Boeing&#39;s problems might impact the long run.</p>
<p>However, Barnett indicated that he was confident concerning the future of business aviation.</p>
<p>&#8220;Although the Alaska Airlines incident was undoubtedly an emergency, the pilots responded immediately and landed the plane safely. So the incident shows that even when something goes horribly wrong, other elements of the flight safety system usually prevent a catastrophe,&#8221; he told CNBC Travel.</p>
<p>&#8220;Overall, this incident says more about the safety of flying than about its dangers,&#8221; he said.</p>

<p>Although competition between airlines is fierce, aircraft manufacturing has long been dominated by the century-old US company Boeing and its European rival Airbus. Together, the 2 corporations manufacture just about all large passenger aircraft.</p>

<p>Among those that need to fly only with Airbus or avoid Boeing&#39;s 737 Max aircraft, this might be easier for some than others, Harvey said.</p>
<p>&#8220;Some airlines have a significant number of Boeing aircraft in their fleet, so people may have to switch airlines,&#8221; she said. &#8220;For the average traveler, that&#39;s not a problem, but for frequent flyers looking to upgrade their status, that may be less attractive and therefore more difficult to implement.&#8221;</p>
<p>However, there isn&#8217;t any guarantee.</p>
<p>After <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethiopian_Airlines_Flight_302" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302</a> crashed on March 10, 2019, I paid a further four-figure sum in order that my family could fly from Singapore to the USA to avoid having to travel on a Boeing 737 Max.</p>
<p>Before the departure date, the airline communicated by email minor changes to the departure time in addition to one other change that may not have been an issue before: a change of aircraft.</p>

<p>As I grow old, a cushty seat becomes more essential. I enjoy driving long distances, but after about 90 minutes in the driving force&#39;s seat, my hips and back begin to hurt.</p>

<p>The DR-6000 uses a small air compressor to quickly fill air chambers strategically placed on the back and bottom of the seat. There are several massage modes that supply different massage intensities. I&#39;m an enormous guy, so I liked the more aggressive settings.</p>
<p>The compressor is housed in a small bag that hangs below your knees. It is quiet and fills the air chambers quickly.</p>
<p>The DR-6000 also has heated seats, which I didn&#39;t need this summer in Texas, but I&#39;m sure will turn out to be useful this winter.</p>
<p>The massage and warmth levels are controlled via a small wired handheld remote control that may be stored in a bag next to the compressor.</p>

<p>About the dimensions of a soda can, Syncwire&#39;s Portable Inflator ($79.99, syncwire.com) can inflate automotive, motorcycle and bicycle tires or items corresponding to sports balls, air mattresses and inflatables. It has a maximum inflation capability of 150 psi.</p>
<p>The interface could be very easy. Press the facility button, select the filling mode, use the + and &#8211; buttons to set the specified pressure and connect the hose to the device you wish to fill. Once connected, the display will show the present pressure.</p>
<p>Pressing the facility button starts inflation and the compressor stops when the specified pressure is reached.</p>
<p>It has a 5,200mAh rechargeable battery that charges via a USB-C cable.</p>
<p>There can be a USB-A port which you could use to charge your phone.</p>
<p>I tested this on my SUV. I deflated my tires to 25 psi and it took about two and a half minutes to pump them as much as 33 psi. I did notice that the inflator gets quite warm during use, but that was tolerable.</p>

They also help save many lives, often in dramatic ways, through their frequent use in all-weather military operations, medical transport, and search-and-rescue missions.</p>
<p>When something goes mistaken, dramatic images and news of helicopter accidents attract public attention. This is particularly true when high-profile <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/26/us/calabasas-helicopter-crash-trnd/index.html">Celebrities</a> or <a href="https://www.npr.org/2024/05/21/1252441894/iran-helicopter-crash-safety-president-raisi">Government officials</a> be involved. </p>
<p>However, modern helicopters are secure. Each 12 months, the U.S. industrial helicopter industry completes roughly 3 million flight hours. There have been <a href="https://publicsafetyaviation.org/images/Press_Release_A/10.12.23_USHST_Releases_October_2023_Monthly_Safety_Report.pdf">0.77 fatal accidents per 100,000 flight hours</a> on average from 2018 to 2022. <h2>Security basics</h2>
<p>Helicopter safety begins with the elemental ability of large-diameter rotors to robotically spin within the event of an engine failure. With the engine off, the rotors spin freely, slowing the helicopter&#39;s descent and allowing a controlled landing like a parachute. Reliable powertrains &#8211; engines, transmissions and drive shafts &#8211; durable rotor blades and low-vibration airframes have also paved the way in which for safer flights.  </p>

<p><em>The recent high-profile mass shootings at SEPTA bus stations are over <a href="https://www.thetrace.org/2024/03/septa-gun-violence-philadelphia-essay/?mc_cid=2a9096c7dc&#038;mc_eid=0bbd955412">Philadelphia commuters on high alert</a>.  Two gunmen opened fire at a bus stop within the Ogontz district on March 4, 2024, striking and killing five people <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/philadelphia/news/philadelphia-teen-killed-septa-dayemen-taylor-family-mourns/">17-year-old Dayemen Taylor</a>.  Two days later a bunch of teenagers <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/21/us/philadelphia-bus-stop-shooting-arrest/index.html">shot eight other teenagers</a> waiting at a bus stop near Northeast High School after school.</em></p>
<p><em>So far in 2024, <a href="https://www.phillypolice.com/crimestats/">86 people</a> were killed in Philadelphia &#8211; the overwhelming majority of them after being shot.  Yet town continues to be heading in the right direction to record its lowest variety of murders since 2016, an indication of how violent it has been in recent times.</em></p>
<p><em>A <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s44284-024-00034-8">latest study</a> by urban researchers at New York University <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=QfZNofYAAAAJ&#038;hl=en&#038;oi=ao">Ryan Succar</a> And <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=1KQ1VqsAAAAJ&#038;hl=en&#038;oi=ao">Maurizio Porfiri</a> uses a technique often called urban scaling to know how violence in Philadelphia and other cities compares to what could be expected in cities given their size.  They answered the next questions for The Conversation.</em></p>
<h2>What is urban scaling?</h2>
<p>Large cities – filled with thousands and thousands of individuals interacting with one another – are complex systems.</p>
<p>Urban scaling laws are used to clarify how certain characteristics of cities—from average salaries to street space to COVID infection rates—increase or decrease as populations increase.  These changes are <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.0610172104">circuitously related</a> to population increases and reduces.  In other words, the connection is just not linear. </p>
<p>As surprising as it could sound, some variables – murder rates, for instance – are inclined to increase even faster than population growth.  Mathematicians call this <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.0610172104">superlinear growth</a>.  A bigger population subsequently results in a statistical increase not only within the variety of homicides, but in addition in the speed of homicides relative to the population. </p>
<p>Other measures reminiscent of gun ownership and gun access may grow more slowly as urban populations increase.  This is known as sublinear growth.  Our study shows that the share of gun owners and accessibility, as measured by the variety of licensed gun sellers in a given metropolitan area, generally decreases because the population increases. </p>
<p>To get a more nuanced view, urban scientists like us use a measure called <a href="https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0013541">Scale-adjusted metropolitan indicator</a>.  This indicator was originally proposed by <a href="https://www.luisbettencourt.com/">Luis Bettencourt</a>, an urban scholar on the University of Chicago and the Santa Fe Institute.  It takes under consideration non-linear scaling patterns observed in cities, allowing for a more accurate comparison of various urban areas.</p>
<p>For our study, we used SAMI to rank 833 U.S. metropolitan areas when it comes to murder rates.  We collected data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on local rates of gun ownership, accessibility, and homicide prevalence.  The data takes under consideration all weapons owned &#8211; no matter whether or not they were acquired legally or illegally.</p>

<h2>How does Philly compare to other major cities?</h2>
<p>In Philadelphia, there are far fewer homes with firearms and fewer gun dealers than people would imagine.  And yet Philadelphia continues to be seeing higher-than-expected levels of violence. </p>

<p>Among the nine cities with greater than 5 million residents, the Philadelphia metropolitan area &#8211; which incorporates Camden, New Jersey and Wilmington, Delaware &#8211; had the second largest deviation from expectations when it comes to size.  Chicago had the most important deviation, meaning it was more violent by the most important amount than its size would suggest. </p>

<p>Compared to other cities of various sizes, Detroit also has more violence than expected for its population, while Miami is average and Boulder is far safer than expected.</p>
<p>While often <a href="https://www.vox.com/2024/3/12/24097470/new-york-crime-subway-deployment-gun-violence">perceived as unsafe</a>, New York City is definitely significantly safer than one would expect given its population.  In fact, with greater than 5 million residents, it is taken into account the least violent city.</p>
<p>The positive leads to New York suggest that violence reduction efforts there have been successful, while efforts in Philadelphia will not be working as well.</p>
