<p>According to the Henley Passport Index 2025, Singapore has the strongest passport on the planet.</p>
<p>The nation state was certainly one of six countries that ranked first in migration consultancy Henley &#038; Partners&#39; 2024 list, which ranks passports by the variety of destinations holders can travel to and not using a visa.</p>
<p>According to the rankings released on Wednesday, Singapore ranked ahead of the opposite five countries &#8211; Japan, Germany, Italy, Spain and France &#8211; and its residents were granted visa-free access to 195 of 227 destinations worldwide.</p>
<p>Japan is in second place with visa-free access to 193 places, while the 4 European countries that took first place last yr, in addition to Finland and South Korea, share third place, each allowing passport holders to enter 192 destinations and not using a visa.</p>
<p>Countries in Europe and New Zealand dominate the remainder of the highest 20 list.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.henleyglobal.com/passport-index/ranking" target="_blank">Henley Pass Index</a> uses data from the International Air Transport Association to rate 199 passports worldwide.</p>
<p>According to the index, “visa-free” includes situations where a visa shouldn&#8217;t be required or where easier-to-obtain entry documents, akin to: Some visas, akin to visas on arrival, visitor permits and electronic travel authorizations, are required.</p>

<p>According to a press release, the United Arab Emirates is among the many “biggest risers” on the list, having gained visa-free access to 72 destinations during the last decade, for a complete of 185 destinations worldwide.  </p>
<p>According to the rating, it&#8217;s just behind the USA, whose residents can visit 186 places and not using a visa.</p>
<p>The US is certainly one of 22 places where passports have declined within the index over the past decade, it said.</p>

<p>Passports from the United Kingdom &#8211; which topped the list in 2015 &#8211; and Canada also declined, it said.</p>
<p>China rose within the rankings, landing at number 60 in 2025. <p>Afghanistan is once more considered the country with the weakest passport on the list. It ranked last since it provided access to only 26 out of 227 destinations. Its residents can visit places akin to Cambodia, the Maldives, Djibouti, Sri Lanka and Haiti without the necessity for a visa.</p>
<p>According to Henley &#038; Partners, the gap between the strongest and weakest passes on the list is the widest within the index&#39;s 19-year history. Singaporeans can visit 169 more places than Afghans with no need a visa, it says.</p>
<p>After Afghanistan, the weakest passports on the list are those from Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Pakistan, Somalia, Nepal, the Palestinian territories, Libya and Bangladesh, each behind North Korea, whose residents can visit 41 destinations worldwide, in accordance with the rating.</p>

<p>Surveys suggest that in <a href="https://www.edelman.com/trust/2024/trust-barometer">many Western democracies</a>, <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2024/06/24/public-trust-in-government-1958-2024/">political trust</a> is at its lowest point. Scandals, corruption, weakening economies, conspiracy theories and circulating disinformation all contribute to this. But is it really so bad for people living in a democracy to distrust their government?</p>
<p>In this episode of <a href="https://pod.link/1550643487">The weekly conversation</a>Let&#39;s talk over with political scientist Grant Duncan about why he thinks a certain level of distrust and skepticism of powerful politicians is definitely healthy for democracy. And about how populists like Donald Trump manage to make use of people&#39;s distrust of the political elite to their advantage.</p>

<p>Grant Duncan says that the majority people don&#39;t grow up considering, &#8220;Do I trust the government?&#8221; unless asked by a pollster. And yet, when things go incorrect, he says, “we have good reason to pause and ask about promises kept or not kept.”</p>
<p>Originally from New Zealand, Duncan is currently a visiting scholar in politics at City St. George&#39;s, University of London within the United Kingdom. His research focus is on the issues with <a href="https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/The_Problem_of_Political_Trust/2QlrDwAAQBAJ?hl=en&#038;gbpv=1&#038;dq=inauthor:%22Grant+Duncan%22&#038;printsec=frontcover">political trust</a> and the right way to get there <a href="https://www.routledge.com/Government-and-Political-Trust-The-Quest-for-Positive-Public-Administration/Duncan/p/book/9781032575261?srsltid=AfmBOoq0NzH5IlQpCFd6JXDI-5siMGv1MNuII3Szro_hWvQo29cKUzT3">higher governments</a>. He argues that in democracies people mustn&#8217;t trust their government.</p>

<p>“Democratic constitutions are based on the premise that nobody with power could be trusted. That&#39;s why we&#8217;ve separation of powers, why we&#8217;ve regular elections, a free press, persons are continually monitoring what&#39;s happening because we don&#39;t trust anyone. &#8220;Democracy with political power.&#8221;</p>

<h2>Populists fill the gaps</h2>
<p>Duncan says, for instance, that without the American colonists&#39; deep distrust of the federal government of King George III. there would have been no United States of America in England. Still, he acknowledges that there&#8217;s a paradox on the core of democratic systems that relies on trust to operate. When you vote in a representative system, you&#39;re putting &#8220;a lot of trust in a very small number of people making laws and governments and making decisions on our behalf,&#8221; he says. </p>
<p>Duncan believes that Donald Trump&#39;s re-election as US president directly reflects the mood of political distrust within the country. Trump, together with other populists from each the left and the fitting around the globe, have exploited this paradox of representative government, which implies that a small elite is entrusted with much power.</p>

<p>“It often happens that a big a part of society feels that changes are happening around them that they don&#8217;t understand, that they don&#8217;t like and that they don&#8217;t approve of. And it just takes one smart leader to think: I could make political capital out of this by turning to the hustle and saying, &#8220;I&#39;m speaking to you, the real people, the forgotten people&#8230; I&#39;m speaking for you.&#8221;</p>

<h2>Get higher managers</h2>
<p>There are ways to extend people&#39;s trust of their democracies, and while it&#39;s not nearly blaming the federal government, Duncan believes those that wield power have a much greater responsibility:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>&#8220;When politicians and senior officials are concerned about how to restore public trust, the first thing they need to do is take a look in the mirror because we need trustworthy leaders. &#8220;We don&#39;t want misconduct and scandals.&#8221;</p>
</blockquote>
<p>In addition, there may be the competent provision of public services and ensuring the security of individuals. And having leaders who&#8217;re aware of their limitations and transparent in regards to the challenges they face, especially in light of technological developments equivalent to artificial intelligence. Charismatic leaders won&#8217;t come and solve the issues for us, he says.</p>
<blockquote>
<p>“I think we are too fascinated by charisma and, on the other hand, perhaps too angry about leaders who do not meet our expectations. So we need some kind of commitment to the task of government because so much is going to change and we have to.” Remember that political trust isn&#8217;t destroyed and rebuilt like a machine. It is a human phenomenon through which all of us participate.”</p>

<p>46 years ago, on August 8, 1978, Philadelphia police surrounded the house of <a href="https://collaborativehistory.gse.upenn.edu/stories/move">controversial MOVE organization</a> in Powelton Village with the intention of driving out the predominantly black group.</p>
<p>The result was a shootout that <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1978/08/09/archives/officer-killed-as-philadelphia-radicals-are-evicted-dies-in.html">Police Officer James Ramp</a> Dead and 18 injured. </p>
<p>During the deadly confrontation, a MOVE spokesman said <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/17/us/delbert-africa-dead.html">Delbert Africa</a> was dragged, beaten and kicked by three white cops. Shortly before the violent attack <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/philly/hot_topics/Photos_from_the_1978_MOVE_confrontation.html">Philadelphia Inquirer photographer Jim Domke</a> took a photograph of the MOVE member along with his arms outstretched as he attempted to give up.</p>
<p>Africa served 42 years in prison for the murder of Ramp and was released from prison in <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jan/18/move-9-delbert-orr-africa-released-prison">January 2020</a>. He died <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/17/us/delbert-africa-dead.html">six months later</a>He was 74 years old.</p>
<p>With the exception of stories of Africa&#39;s release from prison and subsequent death, Domke&#39;s photo was largely relegated to the background. <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2015/05/18/407665820/why-did-we-forget-the-move-bombing">mere footnote</a> in American history. </p>
<h2>A controversial group</h2>
<p>Described within the media alternately as “<a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/1985/05/19/move-a-back-to-nature-group-whose-nature-remains-an-enigma/">back to nature</a>” group and a “<a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2015/05/13/406243272/im-from-philly-30-years-later-im-still-trying-to-make-sense-of-the-move-bombing">terrorist</a>“MOVE”, the cult, was hard to clarify. </p>
<p>All members of the group adopted the surname Africa. They rejected modern technology, ate raw food, and advocated for animal rights. They spoke out loudly, often through blaring loudspeakers, against police brutality and other abuses of power. They were also accused by neighbors of kid neglect and general poor hygiene.</p>
<p>In short, MOVE was a polarizing entity. </p>
<p>It was no surprise, then, that the image of Delbert Africa surrendering to the police further divided the people of Philadelphia. </p>
<h2>Black and white victims</h2>
<p>With hair mostly covering his face, Africa&#39;s bare torso takes center stage in Domke&#39;s photograph, which commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.</p>
<p>Africa, who&#8217;s willing to endure the police beatings, is portrayed as a victim of police brutality – a message that&#8217;s in direct contradiction to the death of the white police officer. </p>
<p>As a scholar of American memory, I even have argued <a href="https://doi.org/10.1177/0196859907306834">in my research</a> that the death of a police officer calls the social fabric into query by highlighting the risks of being a police officer. These deaths also require – within the interest of society as an entire – the understanding that they weren&#8217;t in vain.</p>
<p>According to letters to the editor published in Philadelphia, there can only be one victim.</p>
<p>And that wasn&#39;t Africa. </p>
<p>It can be easy to assume that Domke&#39;s photograph has faded into the background of American public memory. Part of the issue is that the 1978 incident was overshadowed by a fair more dramatic and violent confrontation between police and MOVE that occurred seven years later. </p>

<p>In this incident in 1985 <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2019/8/8/20747198/philadelphia-bombing-1985-move">dropped a bomb</a> on the home in West Philadelphia where MOVE lived. <p>On July 13, lower than an hour after the assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump, Elon Musk posted the next on X (formerly Twitter) to his over 190 million followers:</p>
<p>Just a few days later, Musk was reported <a href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/elections/elon-musk-has-said-he-is-committing-around-45-million-a-month-to-a-new-pro-trump-super-pac-dda53823">planned inspection</a> $45 million a month to a pro-Trump super political motion committee (PAC). Musk denied this, saying he had formed a brand new &#8220;America PAC&#8221; focused on &#8220;meritocracy and individual freedom.&#8221; </p>
<p>Trump is anticipated to learn from donations from Musk, who <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/article/2024/jul/24/elon-musk-donald-trump-donations-denial-super-pac-america">has said</a> “The Republicans are predominantly, but not exclusively, on the side of achievement and freedom.”</p>
<p>Musk has previously described himself as a &#8220;champion of absolute freedom of speech&#8221; and as a political moderate. His political beliefs often don&#8217;t fit into the left-right binary. In the context of the US presidential election, nonetheless, <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/world/accused-of-not-supporting-free-speech-elon-musk-defends-decision-to-vote-republicans-in-nov-10739451.html">he supported</a> the Democratic candidate in every election between 2008 and 2020. </p>
<p>Now he&#39;s seen as a possible concession to conservatives &#8211; especially after his support for Trump. So what&#39;s modified?</p>
<h2>The death of Twitter – and the birth of X</h2>
<p>Since Musk Twitter in <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/27/technology/elon-musk-twitter-deal-complete.html">October 2022</a> and renamed X, the platform was criticized for <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/15/technology/hate-speech-israel-gaza-internet.html">Hate speech</a> And <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2024-02-28/twitter-x-fighting-bot-problem-as-ai-spam-floods-the-internet/103498070">Bots</a> to spread. Investigations suggest that each allegations are true.</p>
<p>According to a 2023 report by the Centre for Countering Digital Hate, Musk’s property <a href="https://counterhate.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Toxic-Twitter-II-Final-Report.pdf">corresponded to a rise of 119 %</a> in tweets a few conspiracy claiming LGBTQ+ people abuse children. The report sparked Musk’s anger and <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/04/ccdh-head-says-he-wont-stop-exposing-twitter-problems-after-musk-suit.html">legal setback</a>. </p>
<p>This week, Musk is within the news for using transphobic rhetoric in reference to his own daughter Vivian Wilson, whom he <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/07/26/musk-transgender-vivian-grimes/">described as</a> “dead – killed by the woke mind virus.” This isn&#8217;t the primary time that Musk <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/social-media/musk-elon-twitter-ella-irwin-trans-video-what-is-a-woman-stream-rcna87429">involved in anti-trans rhetoric</a>. </p>
<p>Last yr, a colleague and I ran our own <a href="https://eprints.qut.edu.au/242533/13/Disinformation_During_the_Republican_Primary_Debate_and_the_Trump_Interview_FINAL_with_acknowledgements.pdf">Analysis of X-Posts</a> which revealed a robust presence of predominantly right-wing bot accounts. </p>
<p>During the primary Republican primary debate (and the concurrently streamed interview between Trump and right-wing media personality Tucker Carlson) in August, we discovered a coordinated network of greater than 1,200 accounts spreading the conspiracy theory that Trump was the legitimate winner of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. This content received greater than three million views.</p>
<p>We also found an intensive network of 1,305 unique bot accounts (lots of which were pro-Trump).</p>
<p>In addition, Musk&#39;s rule over X <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/11/03/1062752/twitter-may-have-lost-more-than-a-million-users-since-elon-musk-took-over/">asked</a> Hundreds of 1000&#8217;s of users (including journalists and scientists) <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/apr/27/twitter-users-took-flight-after-news-of-elon-musk-takeover-says-firm">to delete or abandon their accounts</a>But while left-leaning public figures lost supporters, reinstated right-leaning figures akin to Marjorie Taylor Greene, Jordan Peterson, Andrew Tate and Trump himself quickly <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/26/technology/twitter-far-right-conservatives-liberals.html">she won</a>.</p>
<p>Last yr, NPR News was mistakenly reported as <a href="https://www.npr.org/2023/04/12/1169269161/npr-leaves-twitter-government-funded-media-label">as “state-affiliated media”</a> – a term that until then had been reserved for propaganda media of autocratic regimes. X later revised the term and called it “state-funded media”, although <a href="https://www.npr.org/about-npr/178660742/public-radio-finances">NPR explains</a> lower than 1% of its budget comes from the federal government.</p>
<h2>What does this mean for Trump supporters?</h2>
<p>X was once <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130626_social_media_twitter_costolo_transcript.pdf">touted as</a> to be a &#8220;global town square&#8221; where journalists, politicians and interested residents could gather for public debate. But given the variety of journalists, academics and left-leaning users who&#8217;ve left the square, it seems unlikely that it&#8217;ll ever return to that status. </p>
<p>Given the dearth of diverse perspectives and solid moderation practices, it is not any surprise that the discussion has turn into a spot where Trump supporters mobilize. </p>
<p>Just this week, Musk apparently violated his platform&#39;s guidelines <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1816974609637417112">by sharing</a> a deepfake video of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris, without mentioning that it was satirical. The video, which accommodates vote-tampering footage, purports to indicate Harris making negative comments about President Joe Biden, the Democrats, and her own qualifications to be president.</p>
<p>Musk also called Harris an “extinctionist” in reference to a video wherein she addresses young people’s climate fears. </p>
<p>Offline, Musk was reportedly involved in meetings with a gaggle of <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/18/us/politics/elon-musk-trump.html">conservative billionaires</a> with the aim of ensuring that Trump wins the election.   </p>
<p>We can only speculate whether he has modified his political beliefs and not consistently votes for the Democrats. Before taking on Twitter, Musk claimed that his problems with the platform stemmed from the &#8220;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/10/business/media/elon-musk-politics-twitter.html">far left</a>“Management censorship of content.” </p>
<p>Reporters have also noted that Musk&#39;s actions often appear to be motivated by personal grievances and business motives. For example, after the Biden administration <a href="https://archive.is/20240729003245/https://www.wsj.com/politics/elections/how-elon-musk-broke-with-biden-and-the-democrats-4960b7d8">didn&#8217;t invite Tesla</a> At an event for electric vehicle manufacturers on the White House, Musk criticized the US President on Twitter.</p>
<p>As the richest man on this planet – with key positions in firms akin to Space X, Tesla, Neuralink and The Boring Company – Musk’s business performance <a href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/elections/how-elon-musk-broke-with-biden-and-the-democrats-4960b7d8">long been the topic of</a> Policies and regulatory measures from either side of presidency. </p>
<h2>What&#39;s next?</h2>
<p>Musk isn&#39;t the primary billionaire to air his personal political displeasure online. Nor is he the primary to spend money on the policies of a candidate who most closely fits him. But he&#39;s arguably the primary to achieve this while controlling a social media mouthpiece like X.</p>
<p>Back to the upcoming US presidential election: What is especially worrying is that Musk appears to permit each inflammatory speech and bots on his platform – especially given the <a href="https://firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/11431/11310">Russian interference</a> within the 2016 elections. And our own research from last yr shows that X&#39;s bot problem is much from being solved. </p>
<p>In the run-up to the November election, it&#8217;ll be necessary for researchers to trace the automated activity and accounts on X. Unfortunately, they&#8217;ll not find a way to achieve this as they&#8217;ve prior to now. Much of the invaluable research that was once conducted by <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/31/23739084/twitter-elon-musk-api-policy-chilling-academic-research">free access to Twitter&#39;s API</a> stopped when Musk made this access prohibitive <a href="https://developer.x.com/en/docs/twitter-api/getting-started/about-twitter-api">expensive</a>.</p>

<p>About a trillion tiny particles called neutrinos go through us every second.  These “relic” neutrinos, created through the Big Bang, exist throughout the universe but cannot harm you.  In fact, only one among them is prone to frivolously touch an atom in your body over the course of your life.</p>
<p>Most neutrinos produced by objects <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/universe/black-holes/">similar to black holes</a> have rather more energy than the relic neutrinos floating through space.  Although these high-energy neutrinos are much rarer, they usually tend to crash into something and produce a signal <a href="https://science.psu.edu/physics/people/doug-cowen">Physicists like me</a> can recognize.  But to detect them, neutrino physicists had to establish very large experiments. </p>
<p><a href="https://icecube.wisc.edu/">Ice cubes</a>one such experiment documented a very rare form of particularly high-energy astrophysical neutrinos in <a href="https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.151001">a study published in April 2024</a>.  These high-energy neutrinos often disguise themselves as other, more common forms of neutrinos.  But for the primary time, my colleagues and I managed to find them, pulling some from nearly a decade of knowledge. </p>
<p>Their presence brings researchers like me one step closer to solving the mystery of how high-energy particles like astrophysical neutrinos are formed in the primary place.</p>
<h2>IceCube Observatory</h2>
<p>The <a href="https://icecube.wisc.edu/">IceCube Neutrino Observatory</a> is the 800-pound gorilla of the massive neutrino experiments.  It has <a href="https://icecube.wisc.edu/about-us/facts/">around 5,000 sensors</a> who&#8217;ve been looking intently at a gigaton of ice beneath the South Pole for over a decade.  When a neutrino collides with an atom within the ice, it creates a ball of sunshine that the sensors record.</p>

<p>IceCube has discovered neutrinos that were created in several places, for instance on <a href="https://icecube.wisc.edu/news/research/2014/10/atmospheric-neutrino-oscillations-measured-with-three-years-of-icecube-data/">Earth&#39;s atmosphere</a>the middle of the Milky Way and black holes in other galaxies many light years away. </p>
<p>But the tau neutrino, a form of particularly high-energy neutrino, has to this point eluded IceCube.</p>
<h2>Neutrino flavors</h2>
<p>Neutrinos are available in <a href="https://neutrinos.fnal.gov/types/flavor/">three differing kinds</a>, which physicists call aromas.  Each flavor leaves a singular impression on a detector like IceCube.</p>
<p>Typically, when a neutrino collides with one other particle, it produces a charged particle that matches its flavor.  A muon neutrino creates a muon, an electron neutrino creates an electron, and a tau neutrino creates a tau.</p>
<p>Muon-flavored neutrinos have essentially the most distinctive signature, so naturally my colleagues and I within the IceCube collaboration searched for these first.  The muon emitted in a muon-neutrino collision travels through a whole bunch of meters of ice, leaving a protracted trail of detectable light before decaying.  This track allows researchers to trace the origin of the neutrino. </p>
<p>Next, the team examined electron neutrinos, whose interactions produce a roughly spherical ball of sunshine.  The electron created by an electron-neutrino collision never decays and strikes any particle within the ice that it comes near.  This interaction <a href="https://icecube.wisc.edu/science/icecube/">leaves an expanding ball of sunshine</a> in its wake before the electron finally involves rest. </p>
<p>Since the direction of the electron neutrino could be very difficult to see with the naked eye, the IceCube physicists made the choice <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/computer-science/machine-learning">Machine learning techniques</a> to indicate where the electron neutrinos may need originated.  These techniques use sophisticated computational resources and tune tens of millions of parameters to separate neutrino signals from all known backgrounds.</p>
<p>The third form of neutrino, the tau neutrino, is the chameleon of the trio.  One tau neutrino can appear as a trail of sunshine, while the subsequent can appear as a sphere.  The tau particle created within the collision moves for a tiny fraction of a second before decaying, and when it decays it normally creates a ball of sunshine. </p>
<p>These tau neutrinos <a href="https://icecube.wisc.edu/news/research/2024/03/icecube-observes-seven-astrophysical-tau-neutrino-candidates/">Create two balls of sunshine</a>, one where they first bump into something and create a rope, and one where the rope itself disintegrates.  The tau particle normally decays after a really short distance, causing the 2 balls of sunshine to overlap a lot that they&#8217;ll not be distinguished from a single ball. </p>
<p>But at higher energies, the emitted tau particle can travel tens of meters, leading to two separate spheres of sunshine.  Physicists armed with these machine learning techniques can see through this and find the needle within the haystack.</p>
<h2>Energetic tau neutrinos</h2>
<p>Using these computational tools, the team managed to extract seven strong tau neutrino candidates from about ten years of knowledge.  These Taus had higher energies than even essentially the most powerful particle accelerators on Earth, meaning they should have come from astrophysical sources similar to black holes. </p>
<p>These data confirm IceCube&#39;s earlier discovery of astrophysical neutrinos. <a href="https://icecube.wisc.edu/news/research/2023/01/icecube-reports-first-detection-of-candidate-astrophysical-tau-neutrinos/">and so they confirm a clue</a> that IceCube previously detected astrophysical tau neutrinos. </p>
<p>These results also suggest that even at the very best energies and over long distances <a href="https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.151001">Neutrinos behave similarly</a> as they do at lower energies.</p>
<p>In particular, the detection of astrophysical tau neutrinos confirms that energetic neutrinos come from distant sources <a href="https://neutrinos.fnal.gov/faq/what-are-neutrino-oscillations/">Change or oscillate flavor</a>.  Much lower energy neutrinos that travel much shorter distances also oscillate in the identical way.</p>

<p>As IceCube and other neutrino experiments collect more data and scientists improve at distinguishing the three neutrino variants, researchers will eventually find a way to guess how neutrinos are created from black holes.  We also want to seek out out whether the space between Earth and these distant astrophysical neutrino accelerators <a href="https://icecube.wisc.edu/news/research/2022/10/icecube-probes-for-quantum-gravity-using-astrophysical-neutrino-flavors/">treats particles in another way depending on their mass</a>.</p>
<p>Compared to the more abundant neutrinos originating from the Big Bang, there will likely be fewer and fewer high-energy tau neutrinos and their muon and electron cousins. <p>When distant stars explode, they send out flashes of energy called energy bolts <a href="https://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/science/objects/bursts1.html">Gamma ray bursts</a> which might be brilliant enough for telescopes on Earth to see.  Studying these pulses, which may arise from the merger of some exotic astronomical objects comparable to black holes and neutron stars, may be helpful <a href="https://www.ut.edu/directory/lien-amy">Astronomers like me</a> understand the history of the universe. </p>
<p>Space telescopes detect a median of 1 gamma-ray burst per day, adding to 1000&#8217;s of bursts discovered through the years, and a community of volunteers makes research into these bursts possible.</p>
<p>On November 20, 2004, NASA launched the <a href="https://swift.gsfc.nasa.gov/">Neil Gehrel&#39;s Swift Observatory</a>, also generally known as Swift.  Swift is a multi-wavelength space telescope that scientists need to use to search out out more about these mysterious gamma-ray bursts from the universe.</p>
<p>Gamma ray bursts normally last for a really short time, from a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes, and most of their emission is available in the shape of gamma rays, that are a part of the sunshine spectrum that our eyes cannot see.  Gamma rays contain numerous energy and may <a href="https://www.epa.gov/radiation/radiation-basics">damage human tissue and DNA</a>.</p>
<p>Fortunately, Earth&#39;s atmosphere blocks most gamma rays from space, but that also means the one solution to observe gamma ray bursts is with an area telescope like Swift.  Over the course of his 19 years of observations <a href="https://doi.org/10.3847/0004-637X/829/1/7">Swift observed</a> above <a href="https://swift.gsfc.nasa.gov/results/batgrbcat/">1,600 gamma ray bursts</a>.  The information collected from these bursts helps astronomers on the bottom measure the distances to those objects.</p>

<h2>A glance back in time</h2>
<p>Data from Swift and other observatories have taught astronomers that gamma-ray bursts are one of the crucial powerful explosions within the universe.  They are so brilliant that space telescopes like Swift can detect them throughout the universe. </p>
<p>In fact, gamma ray bursts are one in all them <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/nature08445">most distant astrophysical objects</a> observed with telescopes. </p>
<p>Because light travels at a finite speed, astronomers are essentially looking back in time when they appear further into the universe.</p>
<p>The farthest gamma-ray burst ever observed occurred to date away that its light took 13 billion years to succeed in Earth.  So when telescopes took pictures of this gamma-ray burst, they observed the event because it appeared 13 billion years ago.</p>
<p>Gamma ray bursts allow astronomers to do that <a href="https://doi.org/10.1088/0004-637X/705/2/L104">Learn more concerning the history of the universe</a>including changes in birth rates and the masses of stars over time. </p>
<h2>Types of gamma ray bursts</h2>
<p>Astronomers now know that these fundamentally exist <a href="https://astronomy.swin.edu.au/cosmos/G/gamma+ray+burst+types">two forms of gamma ray bursts</a> &#8211; long and short.  They are classified in response to the duration of their pulse.  The long gamma-ray bursts have pulses longer than two seconds, and no less than a few of these events are related to supernovae &#8211; exploding stars.</p>
<p>When a large star, or a star no less than eight times more massive than our Sun, runs out of fuel, it explodes as a supernova and collapses into either a neutron star or a black hole. </p>
<p>Both neutron stars and black holes are extremely compact.  If you shrunk the complete sun to about 12 miles in diameter, or the scale of Manhattan, that might be the case <a href="https://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/science/objects/neutron_stars1.html">as dense as a neutron star</a>. </p>
<p>Some particularly massive stars may emit beams of sunshine once they explode.  These jets are concentrated beams of sunshine powered by structured magnetic fields and charged particles.  When these jets are aimed toward Earth, telescopes like Swift will achieve this <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/universe/glimpsing-the-infrastructure-of-a-gamma-ray-burst-jet/">detect a gamma ray burst</a>. </p>

<p>On the opposite hand, short gamma ray bursts have pulses shorter than two seconds.  Astronomers suspect that almost all of those short bursts occur when either two neutron stars or a neutron star and a black hole merge.</p>
<p>When a neutron star gets too close to a different neutron star or a black hole, the 2 objects orbit one another, creeping ever closer as they lose a few of their energy to gravitational waves. </p>
<p>These objects eventually merge and emit short beams.  When the short jets are aimed toward Earth, space telescopes can detect them as short bursts of gamma rays.</p>

<h2>Classification of gamma ray bursts</h2>
<p>It shouldn&#8217;t be all the time really easy to categorise outbreaks as short or long.  In recent years, astronomers have discovered some strange short gamma-ray bursts related to supernovae as a substitute of the expected mergers.  And they&#8217;ve found some long gamma-ray bursts which might be linked to mergers relatively than supernovae. </p>
<p>These puzzling cases show that astronomers don&#39;t fully understand how gamma-ray bursts form.  They suggest that astronomers need a greater understanding of gamma-ray pulse shapes to raised link the pulses to their origins. </p>
<p>However, it&#8217;s difficult to systematically classify the heart beat shape, which is different from the heart beat duration.  Pulse shapes may be extremely diverse and sophisticated.  Until now, even machine learning algorithms haven&#8217;t been in a position to appropriately detect all of the detailed pulse structures that astronomers are thinking about.</p>

<h2>Community science</h2>
<p>My colleagues and I enlisted the assistance of NASA volunteers to discover pulse structures.  Volunteers learn to discover the heart beat structures, then view the photographs on their very own computer and classify them.</p>
<p>Our preliminary results suggest that these volunteers &#8211; also called citizen scientists &#8211; can quickly learn and recognize the complex structures of gamma ray pulses.  Analyzing this data will help astronomers higher understand how these mysterious bursts arise. </p>
<p>Our team hopes to learn whether further gamma-ray bursts within the sample will challenge the present short- and long-term classification.  We will use the information to look at the history of the universe in additional detail <a href="https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/amylien/burst-chaser/about/research">Observations of gamma ray bursts</a>.</p>
<p>This citizen science project, <a href="https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/amylien/burst-chaser">called Burst Chaser</a>has grown since our preliminary findings and we&#8217;re actively recruiting recent volunteers to affix our mission to explore the mysterious origins behind these outbreaks.</p>
