The case is just not related to an H5N1 incident, through which, in line with the County Executive office, a foci in San Mateo accommodates a poultry herd within the back yard.

The cat was recorded by half Moon Bay family. When it showed symptoms, they brought it to the human society within the peninsula, the veterinarians of which examined the cat and applied for tests.

The laboratory results confirmed that the cat had H5N1 and was put to sleep attributable to its condition, said officials.

According to the centers, the danger of spreading the virus to humans is incredibly low for the control and prevention of diseases, and the incident didn’t result in people in any cases.

Cats might be exposed to H5N1 by eating infected birds, contaminating with the virus in environments and using pasteurized milk from infected cows or raw costers.

The case shows how necessary it’s to forestall the spread of the virus proactively, said officials. Residents whose pets show signs of diseases should contact their vet.

H5N1 infected pets can experience a lack of appetite, lethargy and fever in addition to neurological signs reminiscent of circle, tremors, seizures or blindness, said civil servants.

The disease can quickly result in depression, discharges from the eyes or nose and other respiratory diseases reminiscent of sneezing or coughing, said officials. Death is feasible in severe cases.

If you seek the advice of Merriam-Webster, the word “Aversiv” means “tend to avoid or avoid that a harmful or punishing stimulus is”. Does that sound like a training method that you need to use for your loved one dog? Probably not.

Unfortunately, aversive dog training was the norm for years. On the opposite hand, positive reinforcement training identifies the things a dog likes and spend them as a reward for positive behavior. This training method transforms dogs into eager participants who’re able to experiment with different behaviors because they are usually not afraid to be punished. The training becomes an interactive partnership and never something that’s impressed by another person.

However, we still see dog guards who use shock collar-also called e-colleagues-and tine collar for training because people see them as a “quick solution” when they struggle to eliminate disturbing behaviors. Unfortunately, they’re sometimes used because a guardian believes that the dog is deliberately disobedient as an alternative of examining the underlying problem that arises (e.g. lack of coaching or not the practice of the dog or emotional needs)) .

Metal -trap -shaped tines that tighten and cause pain when the dog pulls on the leash need to tighten. The dog learns to equate the pulling on a leash with pain and stops pulling to avoid pain – or so the idea goes. However, the fee of such a compliance is high. These collar not only harm the trust between a dog and his guardian, there are also serious medical concerns. They were involved within the neck instability, degenerative arthritis in dogs and a recurring larynx nerve paralysis that may influence the voice and swallowing ability. In addition, the ability of the veins within the neck increases the pressure throughout the dog's eyes, which may affect long -term vision and other eye injuries.

From 2012, Gregory Berns, professor of neuroeconomics at Emory University, used functional MRI to look at cognitive functions within the event of awake, unbridled dogs. This groundbreaking study, which is made possible by means of positive reinforcement training, has the best way scientists take into consideration dogs, and their ability to feel pain, anger and happiness. Our dogs have emotions similar to us and feel most of the same things we do.

If we accept that dogs are in a position to argue and feel original emotions like us, it’s difficult to justify the usage of controversies, forced training tools and techniques. As a human half of the dog partnership, do we wish to be the perpetrators of “harmful or punishing incentives”? Or can we take this information and change into higher communicators with our animal lovers?

We share our lives with animals to experience a bond that exceeds species. Therefore, it’s time that we now not depend on training methods that damage this bond.

SAN FRANCISCO – Public health officials say a San Francisco child has tested suspected positive for H5N1 bird flu.

The San Francisco Department of Public Health said the kid, who experienced fever and symptoms of conjunctivitis, has now fully recovered and is at low risk to the general public.

“I would like to reassure everyone in our city that the risk to the general public is low and there is currently no evidence that the virus can be transmitted between people,” said Dr. Grant Colfax, Director of Health.

The department's public health laboratory conducted the initial testing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will conduct confirmatory testing.

Prior to the kid's positive test, the California Department of Public Health had reported 37 human cases of avian influenza as of December 23.

In all but one in all these cases, health authorities determined exposure to cattle. None of the cases required hospitalization.

Despite the limited impact on humans, the state declared a state of emergency last month to reply to outbreaks on its dairy farms.

Prior to the avian flu diagnosis, the kid initially tested positive for COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus.

Possible symptoms of bird flu included eye redness, cough, fatigue, fever and headache.

An initial investigation has not clarified how the kid became infected with the virus and remains to be ongoing.

Health officials have warned residents to avoid contact with sick or dead birds and to avoid consuming raw milk or unpasteurized dairy products.

In 1970 the economist was Milton Friedman He famously argued that firms had a single responsibility: to extend profits. For a long time, the so-called “Friedman Doctrine” was considered dogma in certain circles, including at many business schools.

Loads has modified since then. Governments and other education sponsors are increasingly demanding that universities prioritize social goals as set out within the UN program. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Meanwhile, business schools must contend with latest market pressures, including global rankings who now take social impacts into consideration, and students, professors and accreditation bodies who increasingly value social responsibility.

But what exactly is “social impact” and might or not it’s measured? As Professor of Entrepreneurship As a former dean of a business school that has undergone the impact assessment process, my interest in these questions is greater than just theoretical.

A brand new standard of impact

In 2020, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) was founded – the organization that accredits greater than 600 Business schools within the US – have made a vital decision: They have revised their accreditation standards to incorporate: Commitment and social impact.

Social impact, as defined by the AACSB, refers to “how a school makes a positive impact on the betterment of society, as identified in the school's mission and strategic plan.” While AACSB-accredited schools at the moment are required to “demonstrate positive societal impact,” the organization gives schools wide discretion in how they work toward compliance with the usual.

While the general response has been positive, business schools have been in search of additional insights to assist them discover and measure their social impact. Ultimately, universities profit their communities in some ways. If you ought to pursue the impact of a business school, where do you have to even start?

Impact assessment tools

In my personal experience, it is nice for a business school to first take a look at its strategic plan.

That's why Determining impacts is a fancy process This requires the evaluation of giant amounts of knowledge. Because it may be so far-reaching, it’s difficult to find out and measure impacts best addressed in accordance with the strategic intent of the organization.

A faculty's strategic plan can function a solid foundation for identifying impact areas that align with the college's goals. It also sends a message to accreditors and all stakeholders that its impact areas are near the core of its operations.

The next step for many faculties, including my university, is to adopt an impact framework. An impact framework is a tool organizations use to discover initiatives and measure progress toward goals. Research shows that impact frameworks could be effective in sustaining organizations caught in a purposeful journeyby providing guardrails to stop people from losing sight of their goals.

Such a framework tailored to business schools is obtainable by the European Foundation for Management Development, a world accreditation organization based in Brussels. In addition to accreditation activities, the inspiration offers the so-called “accreditation service”. Business School Impact Systemwhich was initiated at greater than 90 business schools worldwide.

The Business School Impact System might be the longest established system of its kind since its inception in 2012. At the time, no other resource was available—unless a faculty hired a consulting firm to conduct an impact evaluation effort. The Business School Impact System Framework examines 120 indicators in seven impact dimensions.

Other organizations, akin to the UN, are supported Principles for responsible educationoffer further information.

What’s in it for business schools?

Evaluate impact offerings many benefits for business schools. For example, it may increase a program's status and attract potential students, employers, and college. It can even offer compelling evidence for fundraising efforts and funding applications. In addition, insights from impact assessments can inform curriculum development and make programs relevant to current societal challenges.

Finally, social impact assessments can Foster stronger partnerships with community organizations and industryby encouraging universities to prioritize real-world learning opportunities for college students and enabling them to contribute on to society through community projects and research initiatives.

Business schools have long played a critical role in shaping society – this was true in Milton Friedman's time and stays true today. What is latest is that business schools try to measure their impact. I feel it is a welcome change.

Taylor Swift has drawn loads of comments from NFL fans – including each praise and ire – since she began dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce last 12 months and have become a fixture within the stands became. But fans aren't the one ones who’ve their opinions on Swift's presence at games.

The overwhelming majority of players involved within the anonymous 2024 NFL Player Survey — 72.5 percent, to be exact — said they viewed the pop star's interest in the sport (and the resulting coverage) as a positive for the league. Only 4.9 percent of the players surveyed saw it negatively and 22.5 percent saw it neither negatively nor positively.

The Swift-NFL partnership was one in every of the numerous topics that 's Beat Writers asked players about that they wanted to incorporate on this 12 months's survey, with 102 votes forged on the subject. Players were granted anonymity to talk freely about matters impacting the league.

“I think it was positive for the league,” one player said. “I think at the end of the day it's a business and you need to keep as many eyes on it as possible. And she brings a lot of eyes with her, so if that increases the salary cap, I don’t think anyone will be that mad about it.”

Another player who voted “positive” noted that “a lot of Swifties who don't watch football are watching it now.”

“It’s always good to bring more people to the football game,” said this player.

“More fans, broader horizons,” said one other player within the “positive” voter camp. “She has a worldwide fan base. Non-soccer fans are becoming fans, or at least spectators, in the United States.”

Conversely, players who highlighted the “negative” elements felt that it distracted viewers from the game.

“I feel like she’s getting unnecessary coverage,” said one player who voted for the “negative” side. “There was the entire NFL inaugural season video on Twitter and she was featured five times, but our quarterback wasn't. That's not even correct. It’s not the NFL.”

Another player who voted “negative” said this was because, in his opinion, “a lot of people talk about it more than the football game in progress.”

Others viewed Swift's presence on the games as each positive and negative.

“It brings more attention to the game,” said one player, “but I feel like they used her face.” When she's at a game, they probably show it to her six, seven times. People get…bored in the event that they do it over and once again. So I believe they need to seek out a balance.”

“It’s positive and negative,” one other player said. “The reason I say that is because it's great the influence she has on the younger female generation and getting them to learn about the sport. …The negative is all the true football fans who are tired of watching it. We're happy that it increases engagement, but if I'm a Chiefs fan, I don't try to watch Taylor Swift at every commercial break or every timeout. We know she’s there.”

Like some fans, other players didn't care, with one saying: “I'll jam to a Taylor Swift, but I don't give a fuck whether she's at the game or not.”

Patients with the condition, called cancer cachexia, who took Pfizer's drug showed improvements in body weight, muscle mass, quality of life and physical function, in keeping with the drugmaker. The results could pave the way in which for the drug, a monoclonal antibody called ponsegromab, to be approved within the U.S. as the primary treatment specifically for cancer cachexia.

The disease affects about nine million people worldwide and 80 percent of affected cancer patients are expected to die inside a 12 months of diagnosis, in keeping with the corporate.

Patients with cancer cachexia don’t eat enough to satisfy their body's energy needs, leading to significant fat and muscle loss, leaving them weak, drained, and in some cases unable to perform day by day activities. Cancer cachexia is currently defined as a lack of 5% or more body weight within the last six months in cancer patients, together with symptoms comparable to fatigue, in keeping with the National Cancer Institute.

The disease's symptoms could affect the effectiveness of cancer treatments and contribute to lower survival rates, Pfizer said.

“We would see ponsegromab fit into the treatment of cancer patients and really address this unmet need in cachexia, improving their well-being and their ability to care for themselves. And we also hope that they tolerate the treatment better,” said Charlotte Allerton, head of discovery and early development at Pfizer, in an interview with CNBC.

Pfizer has not disclosed the estimated sales potential of the drug, which could potentially be approved for various uses.

The company presented the information on Saturday on the Congress of the European Society of Medical Oncology 2024a cancer research conference in Barcelona, Spain. The results were also published within the New England Journal of Medicine.

The second phase trial involved 187 individuals with non-small cell lung cancer, pancreatic cancer or colon cancer who had high levels of a key think about cachexia called growth differentiation factor 15, or GDF-15. Allerton said it’s a protein that binds to a particular receptor within the brain and affects appetite.

After 12 weeks, patients who took the best dose of ponsegromab – 400 milligrams – experienced a 5.6 percent weight gain in comparison with those that received a placebo. Patients who took a 200-milligram or 100-milligram dose of the drug experienced a weight gain of about 3.5 percent and a pair of percent, respectively, in comparison with the placebo group.

Allerton said a working group of experts defined a weight gain of greater than 5% as a “clinically meaningful difference in cancer patients with cachexia.” She added that the drug's effect on other health indicators, comparable to increased appetite and physical activity, “is what really gives us encouragement.”

Pfizer said it had not observed any significant uncomfortable side effects with the drug. Treatment-related uncomfortable side effects occurred in 8.9 percent of patients who took a placebo and seven.7 percent of patients who received Pfizer's drug, the corporate said.

The company said it’s discussing plans with regulators for the drug's late-stage development and goals to start trials in 2025 that might be used to file a regulatory application. Pfizer can be studying ponsegromab in a Phase 2 trial in patients with heart failure, who can also suffer from cachexia.

Pfizer's drug works by lowering GDF-15 levels, which Pfizer believes can increase appetite and help patients maintain and gain weight.

“Most of us have low levels of GDF-15 in our tissues when we are healthy. But in many of these chronic diseases, in this case cancer, we actually see an upregulation of GDF-15 levels,” Allerton said.

PARIS – Two days after Noah Lyles announced that his Covid test was positive, the American sprinter finished third within the 200-meter final on the Paris Olympics, failing to catch gold medalist Letsile Tebogo of Botswana.

Lyles ran 19.70 seconds to take bronze, behind Tebogo with 19.46 seconds, who won the primary gold medal in Botswana's history. American Kenny Bednarek took silver with 19.62 seconds.

After his positive test, Lyles said he moved to a hotel outside the Olympic Village to quarantine and arrived wearing a mask to warm up before Wednesday's semifinals. He said he never considered not participating in Thursday's final and intentionally didn’t disclose details about his diagnosis.

“You should never tell your competitors that you are sick,” he said. “Why should you give them an advantage over you?”

Lyles, 27, looked energetic as ever when he was introduced before the ultimate, leaping and sprinting down the track before heading to his starting blocks because the sell-out crowd on the Stade de France fell silent. Running from the back from the beginning, Lyles looked little just like the sprinter who has won 26 consecutive races since 2021 until he finished second in Wednesday's semifinal – also behind Tebogo – and had an overall record of 38-5 against the seven other sprinters in Thursday's final.

Lyles collapsed on the finish line, then fastidiously got up, asked for water and sat back down on the track. He was put in a wheelchair and wheeled under the stadium. It was a stark contrast to Sunday night, when Lyles won the primary Olympic gold medal of his profession by winning the 100 meters by five thousandths of a second after which ensuring that he would also win the 200 meters.

The positive COVID test “definitely affected my performance,” Lyles said. “But I mean, to be honest, I'm more proud of myself than anything else for winning the bronze medal in three days despite COVID. It was a wild Olympics.”

In a press release, USA Track & Field said it and the U.S. Olympic Committee had followed guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and the International Olympic Committee to “prioritize his health, the well-being of our team and the safety of fellow competitors.”

“Our primary commitment is to ensure the safety of Team USA athletes while preserving their right to compete. After a thorough medical evaluation, Noah has decided to compete tonight. We respect his decision and will continue to closely monitor his condition.”

Lyles was searching for to turn out to be the primary man since Usain Bolt of Jamaica in 2016 to win each sprints at an Olympic Games, and the primary American since Carl Lewis 40 years ago. With the bronze medal, Lyles also ended his much-discussed ambition to turn out to be the primary athlete since 1984 to win 4 gold medals at a single Olympics.

He said he would let USA Track & Field determine whether he should run on the U.S. 4×100-meter relay team, which qualified for Friday's final with the fastest time within the preliminary heats.
