DETROIT – There's a shark circling as a Chinese automaker, considered one of the most important profit pools for American automakers on the earth CAR WORLD expands its reach and product portfolio with a pickup truck.

Without the vehicle's branding, the BYD Shark could pass as an American-made product. In some ways it looks like a smaller pickup truck Ford engine. The Chinese-made truck bears striking exterior similarities to a Ford Explorer paired with the favored F-150 – a part of the Ford brand's best-selling truck lineup within the U.S. for 48 years.

Similar to BYD's Seagull – a small all-electric hatchback that starts at just 69,800 yuan (or lower than $10,000) – global automakers fear Chinese rivals just like the Warren Buffett-backed BYD will flood their markets and curb domestic production and Undercutting vehicle prices could possibly be to the detriment of their very own automotive industry.

BYD has not announced plans to sell the Shark within the US, but has moved into countries where it does General MotorsFord and Toyota engine sell pickup trucks, including Australia, Brazil and Mexico.

In the United States, pickup trucks are the bread and butter of Detroit automakers, selling hundreds of thousands of units annually. They have also change into increasingly necessary to Toyota within the US and worldwide.

“When you consider how important these products are to manufacturers from a revenue standpoint, it comes down to the franchise,” said Terry Woychowski, president of automotive at Caresoft Global and previously chief engineer for GM full-size trucks. “There is a lot of interest in this vehicle because of the market.”

Caresoft, a technical benchmarking and consulting company, has around 40 Chinese-built electric vehicles from corporations equivalent to BYD, Nio and other.

The Michigan-based company digitally and physically analyzes every a part of a vehicle, from screws and latches to seats, engines and battery casings. It then determines how its customers – primarily automakers and suppliers – can improve the efficiency of their products and reduce costs.

attract attention

Automakers like Ford and Toyota, which rely heavily on sales of smaller pickup trucks worldwide, have taken notice of the BYD Shark.

“It's a great product. It sells well. They're trying to sell in large quantities in Mexico, but it's also being localized in Thailand,” Ford CEO Jim Farley said when asked about the BYD Shark by CNBC earlier this month. “If we want to be a global player in pickup trucks like we are now, we have to compete.”

While Ford's F-150 reigns supreme in the US, Toyota's Hilux has been the best-selling truck outside of North America for many years. Toyota has sold 19.8 million Hilux trucks since its introduction in 1968, including a record 851,000 units in 2022.

When asked about Chinese rivals earlier this month, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda said the company must be “ready to answer the worldwide needs of worldwide markets” regardless of competition.

“We try to focus on the needs of each market and be the best in town. So that will be our strategy,” Toyoda said during a media panel at the CES technology conference.

BYD Reportedly exported more than 10,000 BYD Sharks in 2024. These sales are expected to increase in the future, especially as the company prepares to expand production.

BYD increased its share of vehicle exports from China from 2%, or less than 56,000 units, in 2022 to 8% in 2024, or 350,500 units, according to BofA Securities.

Exports have continued to help BYD increase its global sales to about 4.3 million vehicles in 2024, up from about 3 million last year. Wall Street analysts expect the number to rise further this year to about 5.5 million, according to Goldman Sachs.

“BYD is beginning to develop the overseas market with compelling (highly competitive, innovative) products that we expect to become a secondary growth driver for the company and could account for 31% of additional vehicle sales volume in 2022-2030E,” says Goldman Sachs analyst Tina Das said Hou in a Jan. 14 investor note.

The BYD Shark is intended to help the automaker increase its sales and profits. It's a midsize pickup truck – which has a smaller market in the US compared to worldwide – with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines electric vehicle components such as a battery and electric motors with a small 1.5-liter internal combustion engine.

The vehicle can operate as a fully electric vehicle or the engine can power its batteries and electric motors, with a combined range of more than 500 miles between battery and engine, BYD said.

The shark starts at about 899,980 pesos (US$44,000) in Mexico. That's far more than the other BYD models, but still much cheaper than many hybrid or fully electric trucks in the US. It matches the pricing of midsize models of the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup trucks in Mexico.

Benchmarking Ford, GM

When we took the BYD Shark for a spin on private property with a mix of smooth and broken asphalt in Michigan, the pickup drove well. Its acceleration is fast, but not as fast as that Tesla Cybertruck or the all-electric pickups from GM. It's quiet, but there's definitely room for improvement in ride and handling, which feels a little less refined than current trucks in the US

The Shark's overall build quality is impressive, but there are quirky elements to the vehicle, according to Woychowski, as well as some “common” best practices with current pickups from Ford and GM.

Familiar practices and elements include overall exterior design being similar to the F-150, including lighting and a retractable tailgate step; the interior design of the front seats is reminiscent of Toyota; and certain production aspects of the vehicle used by other trucks. In particular, the frame – the backbone of the vehicle – is dipped in wax. According to Woychowski, it's a process to reduce corrosion that GM has been doing for decades.

“You can tell where and who was benchmarked,” Woychowski said as he inspected the vehicle’s underbody. “Ford over here, GM down there and Toyota over there.”

That doesn't mean the vehicle isn't unique. While Caresoft has yet to disassemble the Shark to better understand its manufacturing processes and parts, the vehicle's interior design and, most importantly, its hybrid powertrain are unlike anything currently offered in the United States

For example, a few of the battery technology is housed under the rear seats, eliminating cupboard space, and there are bungee cords to carry the vehicle's back seat when folded.

“This is actually pretty poorly done,” Woychowski said of the back seat. “I would keep an eye on this room. I bet they did pretty well.”

Other unusual elements that aren't as easy to identify include an over-engineered rear suspension with two wishbones (as an alternative of 1 each); a clearly straight frame; unnecessary variety of jack stands under the vehicle to boost it; and using hydraulic arms for the heavy-duty tailgate, he said.

Woychowski said customers had shown particular interest in Chinese automakers, including BYD, because they were growing and quickly developing latest products and improving existing models.

“It’s a credible truck,” Woychowski said of the Shark. “They did some things very well. There are some things they can do to eliminate the problem, but it’s not a difficult task.”

Donald Trump's polarizing political rise within the last decade has drove many groups – and a few families – apart.

But a long-standing pickup basketball game during which I participate, involving people of various political leanings, including Trump supporters, stays. I I explored the group's dynamics in my 2020 memoir. In March 2025 we’ll rejoice its fiftieth anniversary.

As former psychology professor WHO has written concerning the impact of participation In team sports, I feel considered one of the secrets to our longevity is straightforward: we don't talk politics.

Development of the sport

Our semi-weekly pickup game has undergone several changes. It began in 1975 as a teacher-student game Guilford Collegea small Quaker school in Greensboro, North Carolina. And we played in an old gymnasium often called the cracker boxonce the house stadium of former NBA players Bob Kauffman, ML Carr And World B. Free.

Over the subsequent 35 years, the sport moved to a more moderen gymnasium, transitioned from half court to full court and back to half court again. Students and college moved on while others joined in the sport, including many individuals from the Greensboro community.

As we grew older, our game became often called the “Geezer Game.” Today, the typical age of players is 64, with the age range being 32 to 79.

Since 1975, other than an 18-month period once we didn’t meet attributable to COVID-19 restrictions, the sport has been played thrice per week before COVID-19 and twice per week for the reason that pandemic restrictions were lifted.

Everyone plays

I imagine we lasted this long for quite a lot of reasons.

From 1975 to around 2013, the sport was played together, but normally only with one woman, a former colleague within the psychology department. With a Ph.D. A Yale graduate, she was 6-foot-1, athletic and competitive.

More importantly, it gave the court a civilizing influence. It stopped the boys from expressing their macho tendencies. Because of her presence and the occasional presence of other women, I felt we were all less prone to behave atrociously.

This phenomenon is well documented. As scientist Gerard J. Degroot has shown, women's social skills have a chilled effect on groups of men. He told The New York Times Here's what men within the military say: “When female soldiers are present, the situation is more realistic and men therefore tend to behave.” Any conflict where there’s an all-male army is sort of a vacation from reality. When you place women in that situation, they really have a civilizing effect.”

Another secret of our longevity is definitely the undeniable fact that everyone plays.

In many other pickup games, winning teams stay on the sphere and losers sit on the sidelines. But if we have now extra people, we rotate them every 10 points. If we have now 14 players, we split into two games, a 4v4 game and a 3v3 game. Since we don't must win to maintain playing, the likelihood and intensity of arguments is reduced.

The writer Thomas Beller said this in his book “Lost in the Game: A Book About Basketball.” In it he writes: “The thing about these street games is that when you win, you play again.” If you lose, you have to watch. Considering how much time and effort it took to even get to the playground, there was a lot at stake for victory.”

Here's one other approach to reduce conflict: Whenever we have now an argument – was it a foul or an accusation? – We call a jump ball and rotate possession. No need for long arguments which might be never resolved.

We haven’t completely eliminated conflicts – we have now had some skirmishes – but they’re very rare. We had a number of injuries, but only a few were attributable to overly aggressive play.

Just a few months before we took our 18-month break attributable to COVID-19, I wrote the book “Geezerball: North Carolina Basketball in its Oldest Form“based on what sociologists call a “participant observation” study of the sport. Some people, particularly my colleague, served as necessary role models, I wrote within the book. And among the rules we implemented, corresponding to those who governed when recent players joined the sport and the way we handled disputes, proved necessary.

policy

The game has survived the last decade because we don't discuss politics.

However, in other settings, and maybe particularly on college campuses, it could reduce divisions to share conflicting political viewpoints with othersWe are there to play along, not to coach one another.

In the autumn of 2016, there was talk of the presidential election campaign. One guy, a die-hard Republican, admitted he didn't like Trump. But as he put it, “I could live with him.”

Another Republican player proudly announced that he planned to spend Election Day getting Trump supporters to the polls.

Of course, Trump won, but many players, probably most, didn’t reveal their political opinions.

Due to COVID-19, we didn’t play within the 2020 election.

Unlike in 2016, there was virtually no talk concerning the election last fall. But as someone who sees Trump as an authoritarian threat to democracy, I truthfully don't need to know whether the people I'm twiddling with voted for him.

By avoiding politics, and Trump particularly, the sport was capable of proceed without the animosity it’d provoke.

But the political climate has also impacted the group off the sphere.

Before 2016, we had regular get-togethers, sometimes with our spouses. We ate pizza, drank beer, gave out joke prizes and celebrated birthdays. We enjoyed one another's company. Although some smaller groups have continued to fulfill for lunch or a beer since then, we at the moment are less prone to meet socially.

So evidently the greater community spirit has been weakened by the polarized political world we now live in.

But the sport continues.

DETROIT – Stellar announced Wednesday that the introduction of an all-electric Ram pickup truck might be further delayed from 2025 to 2026 because the automaker faces a slower-than-expected EV rollout and competitors struggle to make a cash in on electric trucks.

The decision to delay the fully battery-electric model, which had already been postponed for this 12 months, will help prioritize an electrical version of the truck with prolonged range called the Ramcharger, which encompasses a gas engine combined with EV technologies, Das said Company.

“The decision to launch Ramcharger first was driven by overwhelming consumer interest, maintaining a competitive advantage in technology and weaker industry demand for half-ton BEV pickups,” Ram said in a press release.

Ramcharger might be open for customer orders in the primary half of 2025, followed by the launch of the Ram 1500 REV in 2026, Stellantis said.

The change in priorities is the primary major shift announced since Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis returned earlier this month following a management shakeup that saw Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares leave the corporate.

Kuniskis retired from Stellantis in May before returning to the automaker. He said earlier this month he expected changes for the embattled brand, which reported a 24% decline in sales within the third quarter of this 12 months.

“I didn’t come off the bench not to come here and call some audibles, so hang in there. More to come,” he said during a temporary media appearance a day after his return to the corporate.

Kuniskis attributed the brand's current sales problems to a slower-than-expected launch of the redesigned Ram 1500 model in addition to delays in upcoming heavy-duty trucks.

“It's getting better every day, but we still have a lot of work to do,” said Kuniskis, who called the Ramcharger pickup the brand's “Goldilocks truck” — meaning the suitable mixture of power, range and capabilities.

The Ramcharger is referred to as an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). It can operate as a zero-emission electric vehicle until the battery runs out and an onboard electric generator – powered by a 27-gallon 3.6-liter V6 engine – is switched on to power the vehicle.

Stellantis estimates the Ramcharger's range to be as much as 690 miles, including as much as 145 miles with a 92-kilowatt-hour battery on a full charge without the prolonged range of the gas engine and 130-kilowatt electric generator.

Since the automaker introduced a brand new generation of the Ram 1500 in 2018, the truck has been used primarily as a low-cost pickup for entry-level and fleet customers. It is produced together with the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer on the Warren Truck Assembly Plant near Detroit.

The current Ram 1500, recently updated for the 2025 model yr, is manufactured at a close-by plant. Operations at that facility will proceed as planned.

“With the introduction of the new Ram 1500, production of the Ram 1500 Classic will begin in Warren [Michigan] The truck assembly plant will close later this year,” the corporate said in an emailed statement.

The discontinuation of production of the Ram 1500 “Classic” isn’t unexpected, but the corporate has not yet announced a substitute model for the truck, causing concern amongst local authorities, employees and the United Auto Workers union that represents the plant.

Ram CEO Chris Feuell told CNBC last week that the “Classic” version of the pickup truck could be phased out by the tip of this yr.

UAW President Shawn Fain was critical of Stellantis' leadership in light of the cuts.

“Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares is a disgrace and an embarrassment to what was once a great American company,” Fain said in an emailed statement Friday evening. “Meanwhile, Tavares is raising his own pay by 56 percent while laying off thousands of autoworkers. If an autoworker did as miserable a job as Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, he would be fired.”

Layoffs are expected to start as early as October. The final variety of everlasting layoffs on the Warren plant, which currently employs about 3,700 hourly employees, could possibly be lower than the announced numbers. Some employees could receive other jobs or positions at other plants.

The layoffs are the most recent measures at Stellantis, which has reduced production at several plants attributable to sales problems and cost-cutting measures.

Tavares has been on a cost-cutting mission for the reason that company was created through a merger between Fiat Chrysler and France's PSA Groupe in January 2021. This is a component of his “Dare Forward 2030” plan to extend profits and double sales to 300 billion euros, or $325 billion, by 2030.

The automaker offered its U.S. employees a big voluntary severance package last week to scale back headcount and costs. Stellantis, which reported disappointing half-year results last month, said if enough employees don’t take part in the severance package, involuntary terminations could result.

It began like every other impromptu basketball game in an open gymnasium – players sweating on the court, others waiting on the sidelines and spectators casually watching. Jessica Brogan, who has attended similar practices together with her two hoop-hungry sons, said it began as a “normal open run.”

But on this Saturday, there was an unusual tension within the air at Life Time Gym in Folsom, California, as rumors were circulating within the Sacramento area that a world-class basketball star was on the town and might stop by. Still, there was reason to doubt it.

“I haven't even told my kids about it because I hear things like that all the time and it doesn't work,” Brogan said.

Others, like Berry Roseborough IV, an area basketball coach who works with college and skilled players, were more confident. Roseborough received a call from Marcus Kirkland, who organized the session, asking him to recruit his best players because this special guest was expected.

On the morning of June 8, Roseborough called his students in town, without giving an excessive amount of away, simply enough.

“You'll probably be mad if you miss it,” Damarion Vann-Kelly said Berry told him.

Vann-Kelly had a hunch that grew stronger when Kent Bazemore – a G-League player who spent 10 seasons within the NBA – walked in. About 10 minutes after Bazemore arrived, with a game already in progress, the screams began:

“All the little kids are screaming,” Vann-Kelly said. “Even the adults were screaming.”

And indeed, Stephen Curry got here in, a light-weight gray hoodie pulled over his head.

“I look up while we're playing and I'm like – excuse my language – 'Oh shit, Steph just walked through the door,'” Roseborough said. “And you could feel it. … You feel all the energy coming out of the gym. Everyone is almost in shock.”

Brogan checked out her sons' faces. Braxton, 13, blushed when he saw the four-time NBA champion, and Easton, 10, got wide-eyed and beamed when he realized Curry was doing stretches nearby, she said.

It's not unusual for NBA players to take part in amateur pickup games to remain fit, especially throughout the league's offseason. Players with college and skilled experience, including Bazemore, frequently take part in the runs Kirkland organizes within the Sacramento area. The two met at a gym in 2022 and have stayed in contact, in accordance with Kirkland. They bonded over a shared love of basketball and a desire to spread that like to others of their community.

Bazemore encouraged Curry, who was in the realm for his daughter's youth volleyball tournament, to stop by the gym, Kirkland said. Curry, whose NBA season resulted in April with the Warriors' play-in tournament loss to the Sacramento Kings, will make his Olympic debut next month on the Paris Games when the U.S. men seek their fifth consecutive gold medal.

“We've had a lot of (NBA players) on our runs, but never anyone the caliber of Stephen Curry,” Roseborough said. “It was like, 'Wow.'”

Brogan called it a “once in a lifetime experience” for her family.

During a roughly two-hour session, Curry delivered a tour de force. He and Bazemore played as a team five-on-five against Kirkland, Vann-Kelly, Roseborough and others. Brogan and her sons watched in awe, together with a growing crowd that grew so large that security asked people to go away the sport, she said.

Of course, Curry delivered. Roseborough said he was struck by Curry's speed and the simplicity of his game.

“He didn't do anything more than he had to in that moment,” Roseborough said. “His pickups — basically the way you pick up the ball before you throw — were so fast you couldn't even see them.”

“Then his release. He got his shot off in, it must have been 0.3 seconds or less. It doesn't matter if he's contested. It looks the same every time. It comes off the same finger every time.”

Vann-Kelly, 17, a 6-foot-5 guard with Division I and pro aspirations and a recent graduate of Monterey Trail High School, added: “He made all the shots. He was just a goal. The way (Curry) attacks, you can tell why he's a pro. All of his moves are perfect. He has a lot of patience and overall a lot of skill.”

During one game, when Curry passed Kirkland for a step-back three-pointer that missed, Curry got the ball back after a pass and made the game-winning three-pointer on the subsequent attempt. He reflexively celebrated along with his iconic “goodnight” gesture. A clip of the moment, filmed by Brogan and posted to her Instagram, went viral.

But it wasn't just Curry's viral shots and superb ball handling that had the place rocking. According to those in attendance, he impressed in other ways as well. They noticed how Curry introduced himself to every player and shook their hands. He asked their names and told them to not be nervous.

We're not going to play like that,'” Roseborough said. “He actually set up other guys to score. He gave confidence to the players and other people that were there.”

After a series of eight or nine games — most of which were dominated by Curry and Bazemore, Kirkland said — the 2 took photos with the opposite players and the youngsters Kirkland had invited to observe, including Brogan's sons.

“He just made everyone in the building feel comfortable,” Roseborough said. “He made everyone who was there feel comfortable. And it was crazy to me how his energy really affected everyone in the building so much.”<del></del>
