San Mateo-Barbara Bollier, a 93-year-old San Francisco, said that she only made Valentines for one person: her husband. And although he isn’t any longer alive, this 12 months was no different.

She lives at Sunrise from San Mateo, a facility for assisted living for seniors. On Friday, senior helpers for in-home senior care sponsored a card trip for the residents to alleviate the loneliness that some could feel on Valentine's Day. Bollier's card was covered with heart -shaped stickers and she or he wrote a message to her late husband: “Happy Valentine's Day (wherever they are).”

According to the previous American general surgeon Vivek Murthy, loneliness, isolation and lack of connection are a crisis of public health within the country. This lack of connection can have physical health consequences, including a 29% increased risk of heart diseases and an increased risk of stroke.

“Social isolation can be very widespread in the older community. It is therefore important to go to places where your family is far away to bring only this feeling of connection to the seniors,” said Rebeca Gonzalez, spokesman for senior Helpers.

Senior Helpers employees offer seniors for his or her homeland by helping them with day by day life activities. The organization serves individuals who continue to exist the San Francisco peninsula to Sunnyvale. According to Gonzalez, a branch in San Jose also serves municipalities in the complete South Bay.

At the event on Friday, the Gonzalez and Sunrise employees made Red and Rosa Cupcakes and cups of ice cream. Gonzalez also brought Cardstock paper, markings, glue and stickers in order that the residents could produce Valentine's Day maps. Some wrote friendly news for the staff and thanked them for the establishment of events, while others were addressed to relatives.

“I think you do your best what you can do here to make it a nice day,” said Bollier.

Gonzalez also distributed colourful cards that she had collected from friends who work with children.

“It is very thoughtful from you to remember people who are in the facility and strangers in this area,” said the local pilar Sabalvaro. “We don't know them, but I think they are very thoughtful from the elderly people who are resident here.”

According to a national survey by the University of Michigan, a healthy aging in January 2023, a 3rd of the seniors stated that they feel isolated, having an absence of camaraderie and rare social contact.

Sabalvaro, who lives together with her husband at sunrise, said she “had no choice” than to live in the power, and added that it could not feel right to force her children to get up because that Would be “selfish” and you’ll have your personal life.

“You feel lonely because contact is different,” said Sabalvaro. “They are busy, they come, most of them give them and I know that they give the best you know how and that is calming.”

Bollier said she never really felt lonely, but it’s because her family is “really good” for her.

“I am lucky in this way because there are some people who don't have it,” said Bollier. “If I hadn't decided on a family, I wouldn't have the family that I am doing now.”

Sabalvaro, nonetheless, said she accepted the offer to participate within the event on Valentine's Day since it rendered the community.

“If you are alone at home, it is very lonely and there is no activity,” she said.

Fifty sensors that use artificial intelligence to assist detect wildfires have been installed across parts of the peninsula, the results of a partnership between the Saratoga-based FireProtected Council, Stanford University and other local agencies.

The sensors were installed in wilderness areas on the urban-wilderness interface – the space between wildlife and human habitation – in Woodside, Portola Valley and unincorporated parts of San Mateo County. The sensors can warn first responders of emerging fires in real time and track the spread of fireplace and smoke along with air quality.

Although the Peninsula is the newest region to put in AI-powered sensors, other parts of the Bay Area are already using them. Parts of Santa Clara County and Oakland installed the sensors last yr.

The sensors are solar powered and use artificial intelligence to research gas, particles and warmth to assist detect fires.

“Wildfires know no borders,” Palo Alto Fire Chief Geo Blackshire said in a news release. “Our community risk reduction efforts are more effective when we work with neighboring agencies to keep communities safe.”

“Early detection is critical to saving lives and property and protecting the environment from the dangers of wildfires.”

The first attack occurred around 7:40 a.m. within the car parking zone of the Grocery Outlet at 1833 Broadway in Redwood City, the Redwood City Police Department and San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said in separate news releases.

The victim – a 78-year-old man – was sitting in his automotive when the suspect punched him within the face several times “without warning,” in line with authorities.

About 20 minutes later, the identical suspect struck a lady “for no apparent reason” as she arrived for work on the San Mateo County Hall of Justice on the 400 County Center in Redwood City, authorities said.

“Although these victims had no relationship to the suspect, it appeared the same suspect was responsible,” Redwood City police said of their press release. “Redwood City Police officers captured video footage of each incident and were able to confirm that the same individual was responsible for each event.”

A 3rd attack was reported around 5:20 p.m. within the 2500 block of Middlefield Road within the unincorporated community of North Fair Oaks.

Officers searched the realm and positioned the suspect. He was arrested and turned over to Redwood City police, who later booked him into Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City. He was charged with several counts, including elder abuse and assault.

According to authorities, the suspect has an intensive criminal history and was on probation for a previous aggravated assault case.

San Mateo County Public Transportation has approved $5 million to check the potential of constructing a bus-only lane parallel to a long-abandoned rail line, a measure that might connect the Dumbarton Bridge to several towns on the peninsula.

SamTrans uses Regional Measure 3 Funding for a feasibility study, including community outreach, developing alternatives to a dedicated bus lane, conducting an environmental assessment, and starting design work on the project.

The study area includes the rail corridor between the Redwood City Caltrain station within the west and University Avenue in East Palo Alto within the east, in addition to the world one-half mile across the rail corridor.

The dedicated bus lane could eventually connect the Dumbarton Bridge to Redwood City, passing through Menlo Park, East Palo Alto and North Fair Oaks. A pedestrian or bike path is also included within the project. Currently, the Dumbarton Express, a limited-stop bus service, takes passengers across the bridge from the East Bay to the peninsula, but a dedicated lane is required, officials say.

According to SamTrans, public transit is urgently needed in the world because over 40 percent of households in the world are low-income, 23 percent of families are single-parent households, and 22 percent of households struggle to pay basic needs akin to rent.

“The project would be transformative for communities that SamTrans identifies as priorities for significant mobility improvements,” says a Report from SamTrans staff“The project will improve east-west transport connections to communities on both sides of the Dumbarton Rail Corridor, including access to high-frequency regional transport services at both ends of the corridor.”

The Dumbarton Rail Bridge was inbuilt 1910 by a Southern Pacific paper subsidy company and was, in keeping with the Bayrail Alliance

The line carried primarily freight trains, but from 1912 until not less than 1918 it also provided trans-Bay passenger service, in keeping with the Bayrail Alliance. Rail service was discontinued within the mid-Nineteen Eighties; in 1994, San Mateo County purchased the railroad bridge and track rights from Southern Pacific for future use.

Construction of the project could begin as early as 2030.

Drivers weaving through traffic on the Camino Real may soon have recent cars to contend with, but nobody to direct their road rage at: self-driving cars are coming to the peninsula.

Autonomous vehicle maker Waymo will begin testing its robotaxis along the peninsula in the subsequent few weeks. This is step one in the corporate's plans to eventually expand its service areas into Sunnyvale.

“The Peninsula is our home – we want to bring the technology to the Peninsula because it's a good market and because we all want to use it there,” said Waymo product manager Chris Ludwick.

Waymo, which relies in Mountain View and owned by Google parent Alphabet, began operating a robotaxi fleet in Phoenix in 2020. In August 2023, the corporate expanded its service to San Francisco to a limited group of users, although a whole bunch remain on a waiting list for access. The company makes tens of hundreds of trips each week, Ludwick said.

During the Peninsula pilot, Waymo continues to check its driver-accompanied vehicles on trips as far south as Sunnyvale.

Just like in San Francisco, Waymo's “driver-only” cars shall be limited to country roads – meaning they will't access Highway 101 yet. San Francisco International Airport can also be off limits — although the corporate continues to barter with city officials about eventually offering flights there. (Waymo's Phoenix service area already includes the town's airport.)

The deployment of autonomous vehicles in San Francisco hasn't all the time been smooth. In August, nearly a dozen robotaxis from competitor Cruise blocked a street in North Beach, bringing traffic to a standstill. And in February, a crowd in Chinatown a Waymo automobile set on fire.

It was only a matter of time before Waymo announced a pilot project on the peninsula. In January the corporate submitted an application to the California Public Utilities Commission, which regulates industrial passenger vehicles, to expand services south beyond San Francisco. The agency approved the appliance.

The CPUC's move sparked a dispute between the state and native authorities, who want the agency to make a decision whether self-driving cars can drive on their roads.

Dave Canepa, vice chairman of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, is amongst those protesting the introduction of autonomous vehicles.

“Why would a city or county allow the unrestricted use of robotaxis when they are proven to be disruptive and even deadly to first responders?” Canepa previously told this news organization. “What is needed is local control and not the blanket approval that the DMV and CPUC have received.”

The fight can also be shifting to the California Legislature. In January, Sen. Dave Cortese, a San Jose Democrat, introduced Senate Bill 915, which might give local governments the authority to allow and regulate autonomous vehicles. The bill is fixed for a Hearing before the Appropriations Committee on May sixth.

Ludwick said Waymo communicates repeatedly with local governments and law enforcement.

“When we expand somewhere, we take our time,” Ludwick said. “I am optimistic that we will achieve a good performance here and improve it in the future.”
