A fireplace on the Martinez Raffining Company on February 1 released chemicals published that may cause cancer and heart and lung diseases, but strong winds have deported most of the harmful smoke from populated areas, so Contra Costa County Health Services.

In a press release, the contra Costa County Health Officer Dr. Ori TziVeii on Tuesday how glad the Martinez community was this afternoon and the way close the refinerie fire was to develop into a crisis in public healthcare after a flag of carbon water led to a high flags of Rauch, which was kilometer in regards to the Martinez Raffinerie was seen.

“That could have been much worse,” said Tzierti. “We were lucky this time. But our community shouldn't need to depend on luck. “

On February 1st at 1:30 p.m., refinery workers opened the equipment for the planned maintenance of a processing unit that had been closed at the beginning of the week when they ray. A hydrocarbon losing from the devices inflamed. Six refinery workers were evaluated and released by the medical staff.

“Air quality measurements that were taken by the Hazmat employees of Contra Costa Health in the course of the incident showed that the concentrations of chemicals within the air in the course of the event were largely under the brink,” said the agency.

There was a short time in which the smoke of the fire remained closer to the ground and the measurements of dangerous particles – including benzene, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and xylol – were measured at a high level, said the agency. Health officials believe that the short time of increased levels will not have a significant effect on the health of the public.

Another update about the incident is expected in March as part of a 30-day follow-up report, which is prescribed by Contra Costa County Health. The district is hiring an independent company to carry out a root complaint analysis to determine why the accident happened and how future incidents can be prevented in the future.

The Contra Costa County Supervisor Shanelle Scales Preston said that it was concerned about the release of chemicals and combustion nonsense products for the health of its district, which includes the area around the refinery.

“I’ll work to be sure that all reports and analyzes carried out by MRC, CCH and the Air District are released completely and immediately,” said Scales-Preston. “My top priority remains to be the health and security of the community.”

Around 300 staff returned to Martinez Raffining Company after a leak licked an explosion and subsequent fire on Saturday afternoon, which led to an application on site for neighboring communities.

When the investigators of the Contra Costa County Fire and Martinez Raffining Company implement the damage, the refinery staff returned to their positions to forestall further incidents after quite a few health advisors from the Health Services department from Contra Costa Health Services prevent.

“I think some of the residents do not understand that our workers do their best there to prevent further injuries and effects of the surrounding community,” Nick Plurkowski, President of United Steel Workers Local 5, told Bay Area News Group.

The employees needed to evacuate on Saturday afternoon when an explosion shot lots of of meters into the air. According to Brandon Matson, Martinez Raffining Company's public information officer, 4 refinery staff got minor injuries through the incident and delivered to local hospitals.

On the non -alcoholic, jug -black over residential area in Martinez, Pacheco and Clyde, on Saturday evening, an application for the order of the Health Services of Contra Costa led. The department increased at around 9 p.m. on Saturday evening at 9 p.m. Advice on the general public health of level 2 requires sensitive population groups within the interiors within the interiors.

The fire was broadcast on Sunday until 11 a.m., in order that the refinery staff in limited capacities in defined protected areas of the refinery could return to work. According to Plurkowski, the employees have been within the refinery because the abolition of evacuations and do the whole lot of their power with the intention to keep the affected communities and the refinery safely.

“It is a simplification when I say that, but we are looking for and see what we can do, what we can do is still certain,” said Plurkowski. “The whole refinery is intertwined and all units affect the other units, so that things are still going on.”

Gas prices were barely impressed on Monday, but an authority predicted as a result of the potential lack of the business activities of the Martinez facility, which corresponds to around 10 percent of the state's refinery capability.

The Martinez Refining Company will probably be obliged to begin a cause evaluation to find out how the incident happened. In addition, in line with CCH, the refinery is ordered to create and implement reduction strategies to forestall future incidents.

When asked about an update in regards to the incident and the investigation, the spokesman for the corporate, Matson, said the Bay Area News Group: “We will continue to present updates on our social media and add nothing further at this point.”

The incident on Saturday adds a brand new chapter to the history of the incidents at Martinez Raffining Company prior to now five years, where dangerous materials have been made available to the general public. On November twenty fourth and twenty fifth, 2022, the refinery unintentionally published a powdery substance that’s “known”Catalyst spentThis contained higher heavy metals than normal. At that point, the district prosecutor of Contra Costa County was pursued legal steps against Martinez Raffining Company because he had not notified the district's health officers in an accident.

On July 11, 2023, the refinery released Petroleum Coke Dust, a by -product of crude oil for a few minute. The following investigation didn’t find soil pollution within the affected communities.

None of the incidents led to injuries.

Other refineries within the region were also stricken by problems, including the intermittent flacking on Sunday within the Chevron Raffinerie in Richmond. In 2024, the Bay Air Quality Management District terminated a wonderful of $ 5 million against Marathon Martinez Refinery for 59 Air quality injuries from 2018 to 2022 to the second largest wonderful that the agency had ever evaluated.

The repeated incidents for public health at Martinez Raffining Company and other refineries in East Bay have the patience of many residents, including a Martinez woman who asked to be identified as a “rather irritated resident”.

“In the meantime we have got used to it,” she said.

The business opened in early 2020, firstly of the coronavirus pandemic, and served as a way for Kopacek and Martinez to share the natural products they sourced while caring for relations' various skin conditions.

The store carries quite a lot of reusable containers — spray bottles, jars, jars galore — that customers can fill with the market's many botanical bath, toilet and skincare products. The sisters also encourage their customers to bring reusable containers — anything that matches on a scale — to fill.

Kopacek and Martinez met for an interview about their company. Your responses have been edited for brevity and clarity.

Q: What motivated you to start out Mighty Market and focus the corporate on reusability and sustainability?

Kopacek: I actually have at all times been the environmentally conscious person in our family. I feel growing up in South Africa there may be this type of revolutionary mindset, but in addition respect for the land and culture and the understanding that food is medicine and what you place into your body is medicine.

But also just the issues we now have in our family with skin problems and refills, just being frustrated within the shower. I might say, “There are so many containers and so many bottles taking up space.” I'm someone who thought in the future we’d just take little capsules of the things we’d like and that might be it.

I feel the rationale we pushed to truly physically launch the corporate is because we’re each moms who were finally back in the identical area after so a few years and were capable of raise our kids together. This society is just not designed so that you can be the mother you ought to be and have the profession you wish. So that was our way of creating it work.

I also think that we generally come from an entrepreneurial family, like our father at all times had a part-time job in South Africa. Our brother has never received a paycheck from one other person until last yr. He only ever had his own business. So we just come from a family like that.

Q: And what motivated you to do it together?

Kopacek: Well, I had this experience working for startups and helping other people construct their brands and businesses, so I believed to myself, “We can do this together.” I do know she's smart and I don't think I might need to work with anyone else. Did I persuade you (Martinez) to do it greater than you wanted?

Martínez: No, I actually have that. I completely trust every thing she says or does as if I were just there.

Kopacek: How difficult it’s for a virgin!

Martínez: There aren't many individuals I might close my eyes and say “yes” to, and also you (Kopacek) are one among them. She also brings confidence and that helped me ultimately.

Q: What does your slogan “Small steps lead to big changes” mean?

Kopacek: Our slogan is “Small steps lead to big change” because we would like to fulfill people where they’re of their journey, not make them feel like they must be this perfect citizen.

Martínez: Many of our customers should not used to this and appear a bit intimidated. Small steps mean starting with a bottle of shampoo after which progressively working your way up.

Kopacek: We have something for everybody on the trip. We have dental tablets so that you don't must worry about things like a tube of toothpaste, but we also still have the tube from David's where it is totally recyclable and reusable.

Up until a number of months ago, we had people come by and say, “I walked by here for three years and never came in.” I used to be afraid of it.”

Martínez: Yes, they felt like they were being judged.

Kopacek: Right. I hate the term “zero-waste” and don’t include it anywhere in our online presence, marketing or vocabulary because I feel like that’s an unattainable level to attain and it’s just not realistic .

Q: Why does Mighty Market value local sourcing and have you ever faced any challenges in achieving this goal?

Kopacek: The undeniable fact that fewer distances must be traveled and due to this fact CO2 emissions are created is a very important reason, but so is the mere support of the local economy. I feel that's what everyone needs.

One challenge is finding wonderful quality products, but in addition wonderful quality products that will be maintained at our sell-through rates. It's like all other small business – they don't necessarily have systems, ingredients, or anything that may speed up their production.

So it takes time to search out the best balance between what we provide and the super local specialties.

Q: How has the corporate shaped your interactions with the area people?

Kopacek: We met wonderful people on the market. Sundays are a lot fun here, like with the farmers market and the breweries and every thing, it's super fun. We recommend people come here on a Sunday to explore town center after which get their fill.

We opened our second location in Lafayette and just left (and transferred our lease) a month ago. We have some individuals who have been wonderful customers of ours for years and we now have given them the space to start out their business. It's a resource we consider the community will profit from – helping latest families come together where they’ll find out about postpartum recovery. We love that, and we love that they were mothers and likewise business owners and had kids to deal with.

Q: How has owning a business together shaped your relationship?

Kopacek: We definitely talk more now. I feel like we grew up as a detailed family.

Martínez: We just hang around with one another!

Kopacek: We do! I feel we could be close whether we had that or not. It helps to have someone to lean on and share with someone who knows what you're going through. I feel like entrepreneurship and motherhood are two of probably the most difficult but in addition isolating things. They don't clock out and in. You can't clock out.

Q: What motivates you to proceed to expand your organization in times of crisis?

Kopacek: We remain true to our vision and our ethics. I feel like there's loads of greenwashing happening today amongst brands big and small.

We live it on all levels, we stay true to what we consider in. I feel that's why our customers know the way we live and what we consider in, and we do our greatest at every opportunity to remain true to our goal of a greater footprint for the following generation. That's a giant a part of our focus.

OAKLAND — A Martinez resident has been charged with drug trafficking, two years after a Contra Costa sheriff's deputy searched his automotive and located five kilos of methamphetamine and a pair of,000 pills of fentanyl, court records show.

Kory Kingsley, 51, was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl for resale. The former count carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Prosecutors also sought to seize about $3,100 in money and a handgun that were allegedly present in his possession, the indictment states.

Kingsley stays in federal custody for now. At a court hearing on July 9, Judge Donna Ryu said she was willing to release him to a halfway house in San Francisco as soon as a bed becomes available there, based on a transcript of the hearing. He is due back in court next month.

According to court records, Kingsley was the topic of a Contra Costa Sheriff's investigation in 2022 after a confidential informant accused him of being a drug dealer. Investigators placed a tracking device on his Chevrolet and followed him on May 25, 2022, as he drove through Pleasant Hill, Pacheco and other locations conducting alleged drug deals.

An officer eventually stopped the Chevrolet and searched it after a Pittsburg police sniffer dog “alerted” the presence of medication within the vehicle, police said. Inside, officers found a 5.5-pound bag of methamphetamine, 4.3 ounces of heroin, 100 ecstasy pills and a pair of,000 pills of fentanyl, based on court documents.

Meanwhile, at Kingley's Jordan Court home, police arrested a lady on suspicion of attempted destruction of evidence and drug possession when she began loading a vehicle with various items from the house. Cocaine, marijuana, fentanyl, a suspected meth pipe and $3,820 in money were later present in the automotive. The woman refused to talk with police, and she or he was released without charges, authorities said.

A loaded firearm and ammunition were present in a protected in the home, authorities said.

Pedro Martinez looked back on the unlikely transfer to the Red Sox: One of the very best decisions in recent Red Sox history got here in late 1997, when Boston Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette signed newly crowned National League Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez because he needed a star to top off the team's pitchers who were missing Roger Clemens.

A pitcher as talented as he was charismatic, Martinez won two more Cy Young Awards in Boston, one of the dominant streaks of any pitcher within the last 50 years (and at the peak of the steroid era). He was also a member of the 2004 team that won the Red Sox's first World Series title in 86 years.

The trade, which sent young pitchers Carl Pavano and Tony Armas Jr. to the Montreal Expos in exchange for the then 26-year-old Martinez, takes its rightful place amongst the very best in team history.

And yet, Martinez was completely shocked when the deal was first announced. The Hall of Fame right-hander, now a studio analyst for MLB Network, offered some vivid comments in regards to the deal and what it ultimately meant for his profession and life.

First of all, as he mentioned before, Martinez originally wanted to hitch Boston’s biggest rival, the Yankees.

“Guess what? When I won the Cy Young Award in late 1997, I was asked where I would most likely go if I had the choice? New York,” Martinez explained. “Oh, if it's not New York, then Baltimore. If it's not Baltimore, I said I would have loved to go to Atlanta, but they don't need me. They had great pitchers.”

“From the National League, I chose San Francisco,” he added.

But Duquette and the Red Sox got there first and signed the extremely talented Martinez right in the beginning of his prime.

“And then all of a sudden I'm walking around and everyone's saying, 'Oh, Pedro got traded to Boston,'” he recalls. “I'm thinking, what? Boston? No Cleveland, no Baltimore. Because I was thinking of a team that would give me a real chance to win.”

Expos manager Felipe Alou knew they couldn't keep him, so he tried to send his young star to a spot that would compete.

“Felipe told me I deserved to be on a team that would give me a chance to win. And Boston had finished last that year, and I was like, oh man,” Martinez said. “All of a sudden I packed my bags and here I am in Boston.”

Martinez's memory isn’t entirely accurate: The Red Sox finished the 1997 season in fourth place with a record of 78-84, two games ahead of the Blue Jays. Yet the team seemed leaderless in its first season after Clemens made the controversial decision to maneuver to Toronto as a free agent.

The signing of Martinez helped to show things around.

“We returned straight back to the postseason [in 1998]”, Martinez recalled with satisfaction.

When his co-host Harold Reynolds told him he could only imagine Martinez within the Hall of Fame as a member of the Red Sox, the longtime Boston star agreed.

“Me neither,” Martinez agreed. “I absolutely loved Boston from the first day I played there to the last. And I still love Boston to this day. I'm so proud and so happy that fate brought me to Boston.”

useful information: Since Pedro Martinez struck out 313 batters on his technique to winning the pitching Triple Crown in 1999 (he led the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts), only three American League pitchers have surpassed the elusive 300-strikeout mark. Can you name them?
