San Mateo-Barbara Bollier, a 93-year-old San Francisco, said that she only made Valentines for one person: her husband. And although he isn’t any longer alive, this 12 months was no different.

She lives at Sunrise from San Mateo, a facility for assisted living for seniors. On Friday, senior helpers for in-home senior care sponsored a card trip for the residents to alleviate the loneliness that some could feel on Valentine's Day. Bollier's card was covered with heart -shaped stickers and she or he wrote a message to her late husband: “Happy Valentine's Day (wherever they are).”

According to the previous American general surgeon Vivek Murthy, loneliness, isolation and lack of connection are a crisis of public health within the country. This lack of connection can have physical health consequences, including a 29% increased risk of heart diseases and an increased risk of stroke.

“Social isolation can be very widespread in the older community. It is therefore important to go to places where your family is far away to bring only this feeling of connection to the seniors,” said Rebeca Gonzalez, spokesman for senior Helpers.

Senior Helpers employees offer seniors for his or her homeland by helping them with day by day life activities. The organization serves individuals who continue to exist the San Francisco peninsula to Sunnyvale. According to Gonzalez, a branch in San Jose also serves municipalities in the complete South Bay.

At the event on Friday, the Gonzalez and Sunrise employees made Red and Rosa Cupcakes and cups of ice cream. Gonzalez also brought Cardstock paper, markings, glue and stickers in order that the residents could produce Valentine's Day maps. Some wrote friendly news for the staff and thanked them for the establishment of events, while others were addressed to relatives.

“I think you do your best what you can do here to make it a nice day,” said Bollier.

Gonzalez also distributed colourful cards that she had collected from friends who work with children.

“It is very thoughtful from you to remember people who are in the facility and strangers in this area,” said the local pilar Sabalvaro. “We don't know them, but I think they are very thoughtful from the elderly people who are resident here.”

According to a national survey by the University of Michigan, a healthy aging in January 2023, a 3rd of the seniors stated that they feel isolated, having an absence of camaraderie and rare social contact.

Sabalvaro, who lives together with her husband at sunrise, said she “had no choice” than to live in the power, and added that it could not feel right to force her children to get up because that Would be “selfish” and you’ll have your personal life.

“You feel lonely because contact is different,” said Sabalvaro. “They are busy, they come, most of them give them and I know that they give the best you know how and that is calming.”

Bollier said she never really felt lonely, but it’s because her family is “really good” for her.

“I am lucky in this way because there are some people who don't have it,” said Bollier. “If I hadn't decided on a family, I wouldn't have the family that I am doing now.”

Sabalvaro, nonetheless, said she accepted the offer to participate within the event on Valentine's Day since it rendered the community.

“If you are alone at home, it is very lonely and there is no activity,” she said.

A couple of weeks before Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey announced in May 2024 that they were expecting a baby, the pop icon posted a selfie during which he seems tearful and disturbed.

While media attention quickly focused on the pregnancy, little attention was paid to the importance of a male celebrity and Expectant father publicly shares his vulnerability.

Nevertheless, Bieber's social media post is notable since it makes his inner struggle visible.

Emotional pain is linked to serious health problems. But the general public's response to male expressions of emotion and vulnerability is usually trivializing, if not dismissive. In response to Bieber's tearful post, for instance, Hailey described him as “pretty screamer.”

A 12 months ago, Canadian rapper Dax released the song “Being a person.” He said at the time: “This is a song that I put my heart and soul into. I pray that it reaches everyone who needs it.”

The message of the song remains to be relevant today. It incorporates the lyrics:

Yes, I do know, this life can really get to you, uh
You need to scream, but you don't make a sound, uh
You have carried a lot weight
But as a person I is not going to show emotions, that is still unspoken

As Researchers WHO Studying fatherhood and the roles that men play in their familieswe recognize the loneliness and pain in these lyrics. We've heard fathers describe the burden they face when they struggle to maintain their feelings bottled up.

In A recent study we conducted In a survey of 75 recent and expectant Black fathers, they spoke concerning the need to handle individual and collective trauma. This, they said, would ultimately help support their families. However, they said resources to assist men with their mental health are sometimes unavailable or very limited. They said they often feel invisible to health care providers.

“As a father and a man,” said one participant, “you have to keep the peace and be strong on the outside. But inside, you know, you're falling apart.”

Dax's writing and our research reflect an ongoing social health challenge: the deafening silence that typically surrounds men's mental health.

The consequences of isolation for men

In May 2023, US Health Secretary Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a advice declaring what he called Epidemic of loneliness and isolation within the country. Our research confirms this plague.

Because men's social support network – colleagues, family, close childhood friends – is usually less strong than women's, they’re disproportionately affected by the epidemic. The resulting loneliness has very real health consequences.

Studies show that loneliness is related to negative health consequences, comparable to an increased risk of heart disease and dementia.
Matthias Balk/Picture Alliance via Getty Images

Murthy's report links loneliness to negative health outcomes, including “a 29% increased risk of heart disease, a 32% increased risk of stroke and a 50% increased risk of dementia in older people. In addition, lack of social connection increases the risk of premature death by more than 60%.”

While Murthy’s report focuses on each men and girls, research shows that men They use psychiatric services less continuously than womenIn addition, men have a more negative attitude towards searching for help and usually tend to discontinue treatment prematurely than women.

Given these consequences, a caring society can ask itself: Why are men those who bear the brunt of those health risks, and what may be done about it?

Redefining the worth of men beyond earning a living

Many aspects can contribute to feelings of isolation and disconnection in men.

In “To Be A Man,” Dax points out a crucial factor:

As a person we must pave our way
Our only function is to work and toil
There isn’t any respect for you if you happen to should not paid
You are disrespected as a human being and can’t complain

Traditional definitions of masculinity emphasize the importance of the person’s role as breadwinner.

An uncertain economy And increasingly expensive housing and food prices make it difficult for a lot of men to supply for a family financially. These aspects undermine men’s self-esteem and contribute to feelings of loneliness and isolation.

As partners and fathers, men are still often viewed as inferior in the event that they are unable to supply for the family. And societal norms emphasize that they should not valued for his or her role as caregivers, at the same time as they turn into more involved than ever in raising their children.

This has no relation to reality.

Our research shows that men play a crucial role of their children's lives as caregivers and have a powerful influence on children's health and well-being. Men also find meaning of their role as fathers.

As Dax says:

As a person, our son is our horizon

The costs of suppressed vulnerability

In addition to the pressure to supply for his or her children, men must also overcome persistent stereotypes that demand that they seem stoic and keep their fears and sadness to themselves.

Again, gender norms must be revised. Boys and men have to feel comfortable presenting their true, authentic selves to the world. Suppressing their vulnerability will make it harder for them to hunt help and can perpetuate stigma and the loneliness epidemic.

There is a posh interplay between society's assumptions and views about men and fatherhood.

Men are subsequently less more likely to seek mental health services than women. Health care providers are subsequently Men usually tend to underdiagnose and misdiagnoseIn addition, the health resources provided are sometimes not tailored to the needs of men.

Societal expectations can create unbearable pressure for men. And probably the most marginalized groups, like low-income black fathersbear a disproportionate burden, research shows. This became much more evident in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, when Black fathers working in high-risk and essential jobs put supporting their children and families ahead of their very own infection risk and mental health.

As men proceed to redefine their roles in families and communities, it will be significant for society to create an area where their vulnerability and full humanity are recognized and accepted in all societal roles.

Men need an outlet for his or her pain. They would profit from relationships – with partners, family and friends – that support and encourage them in good times and through emotional challenges. Without the vital access to support services, their loneliness will proceed to be disproportionate.

Men may consider participating in low-stakes discussion groups of their community, online groups, and church. They may additionally visit therapists in person or online for introductory sessions to Test the therapeutic interaction before establishing a more consistent pattern of therapeutic services.

In “To Be a Man” Dax sings:

No wonder most men are so depressed
All the things they will't express
It is the circle of life, as a person you handle
They don't know what you're price until the day you die

As the Biebers adjust to life as parents, perhaps Justin will find people to seek advice from about his experiences and feelings, individuals who will fully see and value him. And we hope the identical for each man and father who lives his life away from the highlight, doing what’s best for himself and his family.

Middle-aged Americans are lonelier than their European counterparts. That's that Key finding of my team's latest studypublished in American Psychologist.

Our study identified a trend that has been developing for several generations and affects each baby boomers and Generation X. Middle-aged adults in England and Mediterranean Europe aren’t far behind the United States. In contrast, middle-aged adults in continental and northern Europe reported the bottom levels of loneliness and stability over time.

We used survey data from over 53,000 middle-aged adults from the United States and 13 European countries from 2002 to 2020. We tracked their reported changes in loneliness every two years in middle age, ages 45 to 65. This period gave us data from the so-called silent generation of individuals born between 1937 and 1945; baby boomers, born between 1946 and 1964; and members of Generation X, born between 1965 and 1974.

Our study makes it clear that middle-aged Americans today experience more loneliness than their counterparts in European countries. This is consistent with existing evidence for this Death rates are rising for working-age adults within the United States

We focused on middle-aged adults for several reasons. By their structure, middle-aged adults form the backbone of society a big a part of the workforce. But today additionally they face ever greater challenges, especially relating to the demand for support from either side aging parents and their children.

After the Great Recession from late 2007 to 2009, middle-aged adults within the U.S. reported poorer mental and physical health in comparison with peers within the Nineties. Compared to several European countries, middle-aged adults within the United States are currently reporting more depressive symptoms and better rates of chronic illness, pain and disability.

Why it matters

The desire to belong is one innate and fundamental need. If that is missing, this may have downstream consequences.

Loneliness is harmful to your health. Researchers have found that loneliness just as dangerous as smoking. Loneliness increases vulnerability Illness, depression, chronic illness and premature death.

Loneliness is taken into account a worldwide public health problem. The US Surgeon General released a Advisory report in 2023 Documenting an epidemic of loneliness and the urgent have to strengthen social connections. Other nations, akin to the UK and Japanhave appointed Loneliness Ministers to make sure relationships and loneliness are taken under consideration in policy making.

What just isn’t yet known

Why are middle-aged Americans exceptional relating to loneliness and poorer overall mental and physical health?

We didn’t test this directly in our study, but hope to look at the aspects driving these trends in additional detail in the long run. We imagine that the loneliness Americans report in comparison with other nations is on account of limited social safety nets and cultural norms that value individualism over community.

Individualization comes with psychological costs, akin to: B. the dismantling of social connections and support structures. that include loneliness. Compared to the opposite nations in our study, Americans did this a better propensity to maneuverwhich is related to weak social and community ties.

One of the explanations we selected countries from across Europe is that they differ significantly from the United States when it comes to social and economic opportunities and social safety nets. Social and economic inequalities are more likely to increase an individual's loneliness by undermining the flexibility to fulfill basic needs. Generous family and work policies Loneliness in midlife is more likely to be reduced by reducing financial pressures, work-family conflicts, and addressing health and gender inequalities.

Our findings on loneliness, combined with previous studies of life expectancy, health, well-being, and cognition, suggest that middle age is a risk factor for poor mental and physical health outcomes in America.

If you spent a lonely night at home eating chocolate and/or ice cream, you shouldn't feel guilty. That's because loneliness may cause strong cravings for sugary foods, a brand new study has found.

Published in JAMA Network OpenResearchers linked the brain chemistry of people who find themselves socially isolated to poor mental health, weight gain, cognitive decline and chronic diseases reminiscent of type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Researchers examined how brain chemistry changes and processes food cues based on social attitudes in 93 premenopausal participants. Their results showed that those that experienced loneliness or isolation had higher body fat and poorer eating behaviors, reminiscent of: B. Food addiction and uncontrolled eating.

Using MRI scans, scientists monitored how participants responded to abstract images of sweet and savory foods. The results showed that those that experienced isolation had probably the most activity in certain regions of the brain that play a key role in responding to sugar cravings. The same participants showed a lower response in regions involving self-control.

“Social isolation can cause food cravings that are similar to cravings for social contact,” Gupta said. “We show that our social connections determine how we eat unhealthy foods – especially high-calorie foods and sweets.”

If you’ve social anxiety and are inclined to self-isolate, there are methods to beat this. in response to Calm.

Identify your triggers

Writing down what you don't like about an event – including the atmosphere, people and activities – will aid you create a plan to unravel each problem. For example, should you don't like busy spaces, discuss why that’s with a therapist or a trusted friend. Instead of throwing yourself full-force into an all-night rave, start small and throw a banquet.

According to Better UpIdentifying your triggers forces you to “face your vulnerabilities, which can reduce stress.”

Focus on others

According to Calm, most social anxiety stems from fear of being judged. When you're out and about, focus not on yourself, but on the people around you. If you're feeling bad, compliment someone and begin a conversation. Or, if needed, take a break and find an area for respiratory exercises.

Replace negative thoughts

For every self-criticism, give yourself not less than three or more compliments until the negative thoughts disappear. Here some examples from the Mayo Clinic.

•Instead: “It's too complicated.” Try this: “I'll approach it from a different angle.”

•Instead: “I don’t have the resources.” Try this: “Necessity is the mother of invention.”

•Instead: “I'm too lazy to do this.” Try this: “I couldn't fit this into my schedule, but I can re-examine some priorities.”

If you might be affected by social anxiety or self-isolation, it can be crucial to hunt help and a trusted community to aid you overcome the fear. Uncontrolled overthinking and pessimistic self-talk can result in anxiety disorders or depression.

On a recent visit to New York, I visited a Japanese bookstore in Manhattan.
What is Wabi-Sabi and why is there a separate section next to topics like sushi and karate?

Wabi-Sabi is often described as a conventional Japanese aesthetic: the fantastic thing about something completely imperfect within the sense of “flawed” or “unfinished.” However, in point of fact, wabi and sabi are similar but different concepts which are way more commonly associated outside of Japan than inside Japan. Even individuals who grew up in Japan could have difficulty precisely defining wabi and sabi, although each are actually authentically Japanese and neither is especially unclear.

As a scholar of classical Japanese language, literature and cultureI even have an expert interest in wabi and sabi and the way they’re understood outside of Japan. A cursory search of Google Books shows that the term first appeared in print in English around 1980. This could have been a delayed response to a book by The Japanese art critic Yanagi Soetsu“The unknown craftsman“, which was translated into English and published in 1972.

In it, Yanagi wrote concerning the art of the tea ceremony and its easy grace in an essay entitled “The Beauty of Irregularity.” More broadly, because the title suggests, he was fascinated by a way of beauty that moved away from the standard ideals of perfection, refinement and symmetry.

Behind “roughness,” Yanagi wrote, “hides a hidden beauty that we refer to with our peculiar adjectives 'shibui', 'wabi' and 'sabi'.”

Shibui means strict or reserved, nevertheless it was Wabi and Sabi that caught on abroad – perhaps because they rhyme.

After the term “Wabi-Sabi” made its way into America and other countries, it was re-imported into Japan as a compound term; The mentions I discovered in Japanese online sources typically concerned topics comparable to explaining wabi-sabi to foreigners. Wabi-sabi doesn’t appear in standard Japanese language dictionaries.

Miserable poetry

Wabi is a noun derived from the classical Japanese verb “wabu” and is said to the fashionable verb “wabiru” and the adjective “wabishii”. Wabu means to languish or be unhappy.

Here is a famous example from a ninth century Waka poem: the short verse with 31 syllables this forms the backbone of classical Japanese poetry. The poet, a courtier named Yukihira, was a provincial governor, in response to some accounts was banished to Suma Baya famous stretch of coast in western Japan.

Should be random
Someone asks about me,
Answer that I'm languishing
And Suma Bay, shed
Brine on the algae.

Suma Bay wasn't just misery for Yukihira; in response to the legend, he loved and was loved from two sisters there. But his poem captures Wabi's pain well – the misery of being banished from the courtly world he knew.

Miserable tea

Eventually, the plight of wabi found its way into certainly one of Japan's most iconic traditions: tea.

The custom of drinking powdered green tea, called matcha, got here to Japan around 1200. Zen monks coming back from China brought the powder home and used it as a drugs and stimulant. Over time, tea spread to the remainder of the population; By the mid-Sixteenth century it was a standard a part of on a regular basis life.

It was precisely then that the preparation and serving of tea was raised to a high art, which is now referred to as “Chadō” or “Sadō”. the so-called Way of Tea.

As the tea ceremony grew in popularity, powerful warlords competed to amass essentially the most desirable utensils, including braziers, kettles, shovels, whisks, and bowl-like cups during which the tea was brewed and drunk. The tea room itself could possibly be decorated with rare artistic endeavors comparable to paintings or calligraphy on hanging scrolls, ornate flower vases and incense burners.

Then a bunch of tea connoisseurs and teachers emerged who advocated a stricter and stricter kind of presentation: “Wabi-Cha,” which accurately means “wretched tea.” While newly aspiring warriors and merchants used the tea meeting to display their wealth, Wabi-style tea emphasized subtlety, frugality and restraint.

It's not hard to identify traces of wabi in old tearooms, with their aged patina and chic but understated furnishings, in addition to within the utensils themselves—particularly the misshapen, cracked, or dull-colored tea bowls.

Wabi-style tea perhaps reached its peak within the Sixteenth century, when the famous tea master Sen no Rikyu introduced innovations which are still used today. These include bamboo tea scoops, black ceramic Raku-style tea bowls, and the “crawling entrance”: the 2-by-2-foot door through which visitors wind to enter the comfy, womb-like tea room.

A phenomenal loneliness

Like Wabi, Sabi is a noun: on this case derived from the classic verb “Sabu”. Today the verb “sabiru” means “to rust” with the associations “age” and “decay”. The modern adjective “sabishii” means lonely.

There are many examples of sabi in classical poems, but within the seventeenth century sabi emerged as an aesthetic ideal. Poets often tried to capture this particular type of loneliness within the 17-syllable poetic type of haiku.

As the scholar Makoto Ueda remarked that Sabi is “not the loneliness of a man who has lost the person he loves, but the loneliness of the rain falling on large taro leaves at night, or the solitude that arises from the cry of a cicada amidst the white dry rocks, or the Milky Way stretching across the rough sea, or a huge river rushing in the rainy season .”

Matsuo Bashoa seventeenth century haiku master, saw Sabi on this verse by his student Mukai Kyorai, translated by Ueda:

Among the flowers
Two old guards,
With their white heads together -.

The juxtaposition of wabi-sabi as a single term is recent moderately than old-fashioned and doesn’t appear to have occurred in Japan. Nevertheless, the terms come from Japanese aesthetics: Sabi from poetry and Wabi from tea.

Taken together, they appear to fill a spot within the Western vocabulary in the case of talking about art and life—a rejection of perfection, completion, and excess, and a longing to depart something undone, broken, or unsaid.
