First-year coach Dan Quinn led Washington to its first playoff win in 19 years last week. The Commanders overtook Tampa Bay for his or her sixth comeback win and fifth straight on the ultimate play of the sport, whether in regulation or additional time.

Goff fumbled a collapsing pocket on third-and-1 from the Commanders 17 late in the primary quarter and Washington took advantage.

Daniels converted a fourth-and-3 from the Detroit 9 to increase a drive capped by Robinson's 2-yard touchdown run.

Three snaps after Daniels' TD throw to McLaurin, Goff overthrew his intended goal and Martin intercepted it and took it into the tip zone, giving the Commanders a 24-14 lead. Goff was hit on an interception return by linebacker Frankie Luvu and was evaluated for a concussion.

With backup Teddy Bridgewater at center, Williams scored on a 61-yard return.

However, Detroit's defense couldn't hold off the Commanders all night. Washington set a season high in points.

The Lions had a probability to scale back the deficit in the ultimate minute of the primary half, but Goff's omit deep center was deflected by Sainristil ultimately zone.

MOSS LANDING – Highway 1 was closed and evacuations were ordered within the Moss Landing community and Elkhorn Slough area after a serious fire broke out Thursday afternoon at a battery storage plant in Moss Landing in northern Monterey County.

The fire, which burned uncontrolled Thursday night and produced huge flames and dangerous clouds of black smoke, was reported at the ability on Highway 1 around 3 p.m., Monterey County spokesman Nicholas Pasculli said.

“It is imperative that residents obey the evacuation order and follow the instructions of the police and fire departments,” Pasculli said. “In this situation, we take the protection of life and property very seriously. We urge people to follow the evacuation order and move to a safe location.”

Evacuations of about 1,500 people have been ordered for areas from Moss Landing south of Elkhorn Slough, north of Molera Road and Monterey Dunes Way and west of Castroville Boulevard and Elkhorn Road to the ocean, he said.

Pasculli said the Monterey County Sheriff's Office called other agencies within the county to help with the emergency.

“It is a serious incident,” he said. “All resources from the county and our neighboring jurisdictions were deployed to assist with this incident.”

The plant belongs to the Texas company Vistra Energy and is considered one of the most important battery storage power plants on this planet. It incorporates tens of hundreds of lithium batteries that store electricity generated through the day from solar and other sources to be used at night. Such battery storage plants are a vital a part of California's efforts to convert most of its electricity generation to renewable sources.

“You can’t sugarcoat it. “This is a disaster,” Monterey County Supervisor Glen Church told KSBW-TV. “This is extremely disturbing.”

Church said the fireplace was “contained” in a concrete constructing whose roof had collapsed.

“We don't think there's any real danger of it expanding outward and penetrating further into where it's inside,” he said. “There are a lot of batteries in there and the system is on fire quite a lot.”

The plant is positioned on the location of a now-closed Fifties PG&E Moss Landing natural gas plant, visible from its huge smokestacks near Moss Landing Harbor. The first phase was accomplished in 2020 and expanded to 750 megawatts in 2023. Vistra sells the electricity stored there to PG&E, which also owns a separate 182-megawatt, 256-tesla battery storage facility on the north side of the location. “Megapack” battery packs. Employees on the Vistra plant called the North Monterey County Fire Protection District for assistance after a fireplace was discovered on the 300-megawatt Phase I energy storage facility, company spokeswoman Jenny Lyon said in an email to this news organization.

Fires broke out on the Vistra plant on September 4, 2021 and February 14, 2022. Investigations revealed that they were brought on by a malfunction of a sprinkler system that released water and caused several units to overheat.

Then in September 2022, a fireplace broke out at PG&E's Elkhorn battery plant. Police closed Highway 1 for 12 hours. An investigation determined the cause was an improperly installed vent guard on considered one of the 256 units, which allowed rainwater to enter and short-circuit the batteries. There were no injuries to firefighters, PG&E employees or the general public.

Governor Gavin Newsom then signed a law requiring battery storage power plants in California to work with local fire departments to develop emergency plans and increase fire protection.

Last summer, after two fires broke out at San Diego County battery storage facilities, San Diego County regulators asked county officials to impose stricter rules that may restrict battery storage facilities near homes, schools and other facilities. And when Vistra proposed constructing a big battery plant in Morro Bay, residents there approved a measure on the November ballot that they hoped would block construction.

Battery storage has increased sevenfold in California over the past five years, from 1,474 megawatts in 2020 to 10,383 megawatts last summer. One megawatt is sufficient to power 750 households.

On Thursday evening, the Castroville Recreation Center at 11261 Crane St. served as a brief evacuation point for individuals who needed to depart their homes.

Highway 1 is closed in each directions between Highway 183 and Struve Road. There isn’t any estimated time for the roadway to reopen.

SAN JOSE – Most basketball teams can be lucky to have one player. With Archbishop #1 Riordan, it's almost easier to find out who isn't dangerous.

Wing Jasir Rencher? He is an issue. Guard Andrew Hilman? Headache. Paired with a deep bench and a towering center combo of 6-foot-10 Nes Emeneke and 6-foot-9 JP Pihtovs, the Crusaders can steamroll almost any opponent.

That's exactly what happened to Bellarmine on Friday night in San Jose. The Bells hosted 10-1 teams in Riordan and trailed by just three points after the primary quarter. But Riordan took a double-digit halftime lead after a 13-0 run, and the Crusaders were just too good to remain in with a 64-38 win.

“It felt good, but it’s what we expect,” Riordan coach Joe Curtin said. “We are playing well. We are deep. We are a nice, cohesive group. We have great chemistry on and off the floor. So if they don't make a real effort right away, I think that's on me. This team is pretty tight and we did pretty well.”

Part of the issue with stopping Riordan (11-1, 2-0 WCAL) is that they arrive at you in waves. Seven players scored at the least six points for the Crusaders, five reached double figures.

“We tell the guys, 'Look, there's no pace on this team,'” Curtin said. “When you're in the game, you're always at 100%. Especially the guys at the end of the bench, we want to get them involved at the end of the game. So it's their responsibility to help their teammates and buddies and take care of business, do what we need to do. And hopefully everyone gets in.”

Bellarmine (10-2, 1-1 WCAL) faced a virtually insurmountable problem attempting to contain Riordan's relentless attack. The Bells had a game plan that they believed could give them a likelihood, but they couldn't put together an ideal game.

“We hung in there, and then their depth caught us at the end,” Bellarmine coach Alex Sarrett said. “Rebounding was a big factor. We emphasized that in the foreplay. The war of attrition there overwhelmed us. But I'm proud of our boys' performance. Some guys stepped forward and took a few shots. We can build on this for the next part of the league season.”

For Riordan, there may be a fortress to construct on. Positionally, the Crusaders lack nothing across the board. This season will ultimately be determined by what their extremely talented team achieves within the CCS and the NorCal Regional Tournament.

On Friday night, they seemed to be the most effective team within the Bay Area.

“It's about guys taking ownership of their roles and accepting that they have to make sacrifices,” Curtin said. “And everyone has to make sacrifices. Even the guys who play the most minutes on the team make sacrifices. They sacrifice shots. They (would) play the entire game on a typical high school team. As they took their seats, they were there for their teammates and cheered them on. When it comes down to it, we are all in this together and the ultimate goal is victory.”

Hilman led the Crusaders with 15 points and Pihtovs contributed 12 off the bench, giving Riordan the spark that helped create separation in the primary half. Rencher contributed a whopping 11 points.

Emeneke added 11 because the Crusaders dominated the post all night.

“Their size is overwhelming at the rim,” Sarrett said. “The problem is that when you miss shots, you have to get the rebounds. I think we did well to stay ahead and make things difficult for them. And then the boards killed us. When they get runouts in transition and we don't score on our end, it's difficult. It’s difficult every time to take the ball out of the net and go on the offensive.”

Bellarmine will proceed constructing WCAL play and try to mold a young team right into a contender within the tough basketball league. Ethan Lyles led the Bells with 14 points, while Will Corbett and Cam Razavi each contributed seven points.

“We have the perspective of even the worst team in the league. If you have a free night, they can put you in your place, you know?” Sarrett said. “That’s why we’re growing as a team and trying to gain the maturity needed to enter these environments and be successful. But we have to play good games.”

For Riordan, the pursuit of championships continues to move forward.

“We stick to the same routine,” Curtin said. “We have a formula. We'll stick with it. And I think that helps. We don't look ahead at all. I tell these guys at the start of the season, we lay out what we want to do and then we just focus on the day and the next opponent.

“As long as we don’t deviate from that, we remain consistent, and that’s what matters. If we stay consistent, they will get going again. You get back on track. That's why we don't really drop too many games. If we ever lose a game, it won't be twice in a row. We’ll get back on track pretty quickly.”

DENVER – The Warriors didn't have their heart and soul in Draymond Green, but Jonathan Kuminga gave his all.

Kuminga threw down an early dunk, had his best passing game of the season, led rushing attacks and competed defensively.

The young Warrior, who had a rocky begin to the season in various ways, scored 19 points in a powerful all-around game.

But when push got here to shove, the Joker got the last laugh.

Nikola Jokic, the three-time MVP, made every play across the board, erasing the Warriors' eight-point deficit and ending the sport with 38 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals. With 34 seconds left, he blocked Kuminga's attempt on the rim after which fought his strategy to the road to hit the game-winning foul throw.

Steph Curry, the Warriors' MVP counterpart, scored 24 points on 8-for-23 shooting. When the Nuggets closed the sport with an 11-0 run, Curry couldn't find a solution.

Kerr has talked about not wanting to chase wins and wanting to maintain the larger picture in mind while managing his 36-year-old star's minutes, and on Tuesday he didn't push the boundaries. Eight points for Moody within the fourth quarter helped them survive while Curry sat.

On his return, Curry found Kuminga for a dunk, then Kuminga nearly charged Jokic. Instead, the replay turned the try right into a 1, cutting Golden State's result in five with 4:22 remaining.

From then on, it was backwards and forwards between Curry and Jokic – five MVP awards between them. Jokic found Gordon for a dunk and hit a baby hook. Curry drilled a fading mid-range shot. When Looney exited with 1:48 left, the Warriors led 115-111, their ninth final loss within the last 10 contests.

Jokic tied the sport with a jumper over Curry, who was waiting for a changeup as the middle picked up his dribble. He then iced the sport with two free throws and keeled over along with his hands on his knees after a 40-minute night. In a four-point win, the Nuggets won Jokic's minutes by 23.

Bruins

BOSTON (AP) — Brad Marchand scored on a backhand off his own rebound with 20 seconds left in extra time to provide the Bruins a 4-3 victory over the Flames on Thursday night.

It was Marchand's second OT winner of the season and he cashed in a penalty he committed that led to an influence play goal in the primary minute of the third period.

Hampus Lindholm, Pavel Zacha and Cole Koepke scored the opposite goals for Boston, and David Pastrnak had two assists. Joonas Korpisalo stopped 34 shots for the Bruins.

Calgary received goals from Tyson Barrie, Yegor Sharangovich and Nazem Kadri. The Flames trailed the Bruins 3-1 early within the third period before Sharangovich scored on a person advantage and Kadri tied it at 9:55.

Dustin Wolf made 34 saves for the Flames.
