The Red Sox are still in search of a starter despite their recent blockbuster move for Garrett Crochet.

Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow said after the trade that Boston will “continue to aggressively look for ways to improve the team,” whether by adding a starter and/or a right-handed hitter.

is Ken Rosenthal He listed several weapons he believes the Red Sox are involved with. The insider reconfirmed that the club has “inquired” about trading Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners and said they “can't rule out” opting free of charge agent Jack Flaherty.

Boston has long been linked to several Mariners starters in potential trade scenarios Sept. 13, when Rosenthal swam the concept that the Red Sox could trade first baseman Triston Casas to Seattle in exchange for pitching. This winter, the thought was changed into legitimate reporting by Rosenthal, amongst others.

Last weekend, Alex Speier of , reported that a Casas trade wasn't only a random thought. Speier said Boston was “open” to trading Casas for weapons, but didn’t specifically mention the Mariners in his story.

“An executive at an American League club said the Sox offered Casas as a headliner in talks for one of that team's arms and excluded Wilyer Abreu and the elite group of candidates (Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer) from the proposal,” said Speier.

Regardless of whether Casas stays in Boston in 2025 or not, it is obvious that the organization isn’t giving up on refining its rotation. Castillo appears to stay a viable trade option for them as someone who’s a longtime and sturdy arm. The 32-year-old right-hander owns a profession ERA of three.56 and hit 3.64 in 2024 with 175 strikeouts in 175 ⅓ innings.

Castillo has played fewer than 25 games only twice in his profession: in his rookie season in 2017 and within the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He only had an ERA greater than 4.00 once (2018) and his opponents had in his MLB -Career batting average above .250 once (.255 in 2021).

If the Red Sox actually wish to strengthen their rotation, adding Castillo would do exactly that.

As for Flaherty, Rosenthal also noted that the Red Sox were thinking about signing him when he was a free agent last winter. Flaherty ended up signing a one-year cope with the Detroit Tigers. He was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on the trade deadline last season.

The 29-year-old right-hander hasn't performed at the extent he did in 2019, when he finished fourth in National League Cy Young Award voting. However, Flaherty had one in all the higher seasons of his profession in 2024. He had a 3.17 ERA in 28 starts and struck out nearly 200 batters (194). Flaherty also had 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings and held his home runs allowed per nine to 1.3.

With top free agent starters like Blake Snell and Max Fried not on the roster, Flaherty's stock will likely rise as the remainder of the league looks for weapons. Boston is He is reportedly hesitant about signing Corbin Burnes. Therefore, an arm like Flaherty might make more sense for the club in the event that they don't wish to sign larger contracts.

Ant Group president and chief financial officer Cyril Han will take over as chief executive officer starting next yr, the financial technology giant said on Sunday, because it looks to spice up growth following Beijing's crackdown on the tech sector.

According to an email obtained by CNBC announcing the changes, Han will take over the role from Eric Jing, who stays chairman. Han will report back to Jing and the changes will take effect on March 1, 2025.

Ant Group, which runs the large payment app Alipay, is one in every of China's largest technology corporations. The changes in management were announced as a part of the corporate's twentieth anniversary celebrations, at which a speech was also given Alibaba and Ant Group founder Jack Ma.

Ma said his generation was fortunate to benefit from the opportunities the Internet provided. However, the era of artificial intelligence in the subsequent 20 years would “beyond anyone's imagination,” Ma said, in accordance with a transcript published by Chinese media.

It is a rare public appearance by Ma, who has been affected by the Chinese government's regulatory tightening of the domestic technology sector. Ant Group's record-breaking stock market listing was abruptly canceled by Chinese authorities at the top of 2020. Since then, Ant Group has overhauled its business to comply with regulators' requirements.

Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce company that Ma co-founded, was also the topic of Beijing's investigation.

The crackdown hurt the expansion of lots of China's biggest technology corporations, but regulators have recently softened their stance as China's economy stays under pressure.

During the crypto-crazy summer of 2021, when memecoins like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu skyrocketed alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum, Square founder Jack Dorsey founded announced that his payments company is launching a brand new business unit with the aim of “simplifying the creation of non-neglected, permissionless and decentralized financial services.”

“Our main focus is on #BitcoinDorsey announced on Twitter. The business entity name would be TBD.

In December of that year, Dorsey went one step further: Change of name from Square Inc. to Blocka reference, he said, to a number of things, including blockchain, the technology that underlies Bitcoin. The Square crypto business became known as Spiral.

Three years later, Dorsey is in retreat.

To blockIn Thursday's third-quarter earnings call, CFO Amrita Ahuja said Block “has made some recent decisions related to some of our new initiatives” and will “discontinue our TBD efforts.”

Block continues to own a significant amount Bitcoin on its balance sheet, bringing the current value of its holdings to $630 million. And the company said it will invest in a Bitcoin mining initiative as well as Bitkey, its Bitcoin wallet, and will continue to allow users to purchase Bitcoin through Cash App.

It's a remarkable change of mood.

TBD was designed as a blockchain platform for developers. Calling it Web5, Block said the mission was to create a more decentralized, secure and private internet. Dorsey said in a tweet in mid-2022 that Web5 “will likely be our most important contribution to the Internet.”

But Wall Street's opinion on crypto began to deteriorate dramatically. With inflation soaring in 2022 and interest rates rising, shareholders demanded faster returns on their investments. After peaking in 2021, Block shares lost more than 80% of their value before bottoming out in October 2023.

Block said in late 2023 that this would happen reduce the number of employees – at that time around 13,000 employees – by the end of 2024 even by 1,000. Block has laid off the majority of TBD employees in recent weeks. And in its third-quarter shareholder letter, Block said it is “reducing” its investment in Tidal, the music streaming service founded by Jay-Z, after spending about $300 million in 2021 for a majority stake in the company had issued.

Dorsey was asked by an analyst on Thursday about the company's current Bitcoin strategy.

“Our overall strategy for Bitcoin is focused on making it more accessible and ensuring that more people can access Bitcoin, buy it, sell it, but of course send it peer-to-peer,” Dorsey said.

Dorsey added that he wants “the internet to have its own currency” because that might allow Block to maneuver money faster and offer Cash App and other products in additional markets.

A Block spokesperson reiterated the corporate's public statement and referenced Dorsey's comments from the conference call.

It's turn out to be clear that Dorsey has limited options with crypto as he tries to appease a more demanding Wall Street. Shares of Block were down about 1% at Friday's close after the corporate reported revenue that fell wanting estimates and issued weaker gross profit guidance than some analysts had expected.

In his 1,400-word letter to shareholders, Dorsey focused exclusively on the corporate's loan offerings for small businesses. A good portion of that is Afterpay's buy now, pay later product, which Block acquired for $29 billion in 2021.

Dorsey didn't mention crypto or Bitcoin once.

REGARD: Block and make sure profit decline

A judge on Friday suspended proceedings within the criminal election interference case against President-elect Donald Trump, a move that reflected the expected end to prosecution.

The pause was requested by special counsel Jack Smith, whose team is suing Trump in federal court in Washington, DC

Smith told Judge Tanya Chutkan earlier Friday that lifting the schedule of remaining pretrial deadlines would give his team “time to assess this unprecedented circumstance” of Trump's election victory and determine the suitable path forward Ministry of Justice Policy.”

“By December 2, 2024, the government will file a status report or otherwise inform the court of the outcome of its deliberations,” Smith wrote in a filing Friday.

Chutkan endorsed this deadline in her order repealing the other deadlines.

Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris earlier this week was seen as a death knell for Smith's prosecution against him.

On Wednesday, NBC News reported that DOJ officials were present It is examining how the electoral process and another criminal case against Trump can be completed before he is sworn in as president.

Trump has said he plans to fire Smith and is expected to force the Justice Department to drop prosecutions.

And Justice Department policy prohibits the department from prosecuting a president while in office because the department is in the executive branch of government. The attorney general, who leads the DOJ, is appointed by the president.

Trump is accused within the Chutkan case of crimes related to his efforts to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden within the 2020 election, when the Republican was the incumbent president.

Trump was also charged by Smith in federal court in Florida with crimes related to his retention of confidential government documents after he left the White House in early 2021 and obstructing officials' efforts to get better those documents.

The case was dismissed in July by Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump nominee, who said Smith's appointment as special counsel by the DOJ violated the Appointments Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Smith has appealed that dismissal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the eleventh Circuit.

But this appeal, just like the criminal election case in Washington, is seen as doomed by Trump's election victory.

Trump can also be being charged in Georgia State Court in Atlanta with racketeering and other crimes related to his try to reverse Biden's White House victory in 2020.

However, Trump shouldn’t be expected to face trial within the case during his term as president, despite the fact that the DOJ has no control over the prosecution filed by the Fulton County District Attorney's Office.

The president-elect can also be scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 26 in New York state court in Manhattan on nearly three dozen felony counts of falsifying business records related to a 2016 hush-money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Trump faces possible prison time within the case, but he shouldn’t be expected to serve such a sentence during his term as president.

He is being prosecuted by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office within the hush money case.

LONDON – Block, the payments company owned by tech billionaire Jack Dorsey, has launched its corporate card service within the UK, deepening its expansion within the country and taking over large incumbents like this one American Express.

The company's business-focused payments arm, Square, told CNBC that it opened registrations for its Square Card product within the U.K. late Wednesday. This is the primary time that Block has expanded its business card offering outside of North America, where it was first launched in 2019.

Currently available within the US and Canada, the Square Card is a free business card that shortens the time between a merchant making a sale and funds becoming available for spending. It competes with offerings from corporations like American Express And Citigroup.

Square UK managing director Samina Hussain-Letch said the launch of the corporate's corporate card product within the UK would give merchants quicker access to funds and help them manage their day-to-day spending more easily.

“In developing this product, we rededicated ourselves to our mission of simplifying trading,” Hussain-Letch told CNBC. Based on internal research, Square found that small and micro businesses “prefer to consolidate their funds in one place,” she said, adding that real-time access to funds was also a vital factor.

In the UK, Square Card will compete against local banking giants Lloyd's And NatWest. It may also increase competition for some well-funded European fintech players, including Pleo, Payhawk and Spenderk.

Hussain-Letch highlighted The Vinyl Guys for example of an early adopter of its corporate card offering. The Stafford-based vehicle lettering and signage printer used the corporate card as a part of a trial with domestic customers within the UK.

“We have received great feedback on the advantages of quick access to finance, which really helps our small business sellers to succeed and grow, as we all know that the primary reason small businesses fail within the UK is money flow issues are.” “she added.

Merchants can personalize their employees' spending cards with signatures and company branding.

Once accepted into the Square Card program, an worker can begin using their very own digital wallet apps. The service doesn’t charge any monthly fees, maintenance fees or exchange rate fees.

Square is increasing its investment within the UK at a time when the country desires to be seen as a destination for global technology corporations.

Business owners are warning of a possible brain drain from the UK in response to the federal government's controversial tax changes.

On Wednesday, Finance Minister Rachel Reeves increased capital gains tax (CGT) – a levy on investment gains. But the news provided some relief to tech entrepreneurs who feared a fair more intense tax crackdown on the wealthy. The lower capital gains tax rate will increase from 10% to 18%, while the upper rate will rise from 20% to 24%, Reeves said. The tax rises are expected to lift £2.5 billion.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Armie Hammer, 38; Jason Priestley, 55; Jack Black, 55; Shania Twain, 59.

Happy birthday: Envision what you ought to achieve this 12 months. Make plans, adjust them to your budget and set prematurely the schedule you’ll be able to follow. Stick to the small print and don't let external or bad influences mislead you. Taking safety measures will prove useful and encourage you to profit from every opportunity and situation that comes your way this 12 months. Don't give in to pressure; trust your instincts. Your numbers are 5, 18, 21, 28, 32, 36, 43.

ARIES (March 21 – April 19): Think for a moment. Acting rashly or attributable to external pressure will come back to haunt you later. Leave your emotions and reason aside and follow a workable budget. Anger or impulsive motion won’t have a positive effect. Think about your motives and the final result you would like. 2 stars

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): Don't rush into anything that tempts you too quickly. If doubtful, examine it fastidiously first. Put more emphasis on taking good care of things that don't rely upon others. Personal gain, learning, profession changes and physical improvements might be more successful when you go ahead on your personal. 4 stars

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20): Network and meet individuals who have something to supply. If you would like a change, do it and make it occur.
The comedy rock duo Tenacious D — consisting of Jack Black and Kyle Gass – has canceled the remaining of their tour after Gass made comments in regards to the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

At a concert in Sydney on Sunday, Black presented Gass with a birthday cake and asked him to make a wish. Gass replied, “Don't miss Trump next time,” apparently a reference to the shooting on the rally a day earlier through which the previous president suffered an ear injury. The video of Gass was widely shared on social media.

“I was completely taken aback by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form,” Black said on Tuesday in a Statement on Instagram“After much consideration, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”

After Black’s statement, Gass apologized on Instagram.

“The sentence I improvised in Sydney on Sunday night was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake,” he wrote on Tuesday. “I do not condone violence in any form, shape or form against anyone. What happened was a tragedy and I am incredibly sorry for my serious lapse in judgement.”

The band recently wrapped up performances within the US and Europe, and their “Spicy Meatball Tour” was scheduled to proceed in Newcastle on Tuesday night and visit most major cities in Australia and New Zealand this month before returning to the US for just a few select dates in October.

“Frontier Touring regrets to announce that tonight’s Tenacious D concert at Newcastle Entertainment Centre has been postponed,” their tour company said in a Statement on Instagram Tuesday. “Ticket holders are asked to hold onto their tickets until further information is available.”

When asked for further comment from a representative of the band, the Associated Press referred to Black's statement. Details about refunds for the remaining tour dates weren’t immediately available.

After 19 years within the Bruins broadcast booth, Jack Edwards officially stepped down from the microphone on Thursday night.

Game 6 between Boston and Toronto marked the ultimate game of Edwards' profession because the Bruins' play-by-play broadcaster for NESN – the Bruins were unable to send him off with a win after trailing by 1 at Scotiabank Arena :2 had lost.

Although the Bruins and Maple Leafs will face off in Game 7 at TD Garden on Saturday night, ABC has exclusive broadcast rights to the decisive battle – NESN's broadcast of the 2023-24 season ends Thursday.

With the ultimate seconds ticking down in Toronto, Edwards addressed the Bruins fans for the ultimate time from the locker room.

“The last 19 years of witnessing and describing some of the greatest moments in the New England sports pantheon have been the thrill of my life,” Edwards said. “I would like to thank everyone at NESN, especially our production team. Brian Zechello, Rose Mirakian-Wheeler, Patrick White and all the photographers Bobby Swan represented on this trip.

“Above all, I would like to thank my broadcast partner Andy Brickley. You are the brother I never had until I started working with you. And it has been a fun ride for 19 years. And this is my farewell.”

Brickley, who served as Edwards' primary color analyst throughout his tenure at NESN, shook his hand firmly before praising his broadcast partner.

“I had four brothers, but now I have five. “It’s been an absolute pleasure working with you, Jack,” said Brickley. “Great call again tonight, great finish. For you personally, it would have been a storybook experience if they had won Game 5 at home and gone out that way. And given the state of this series, it might have been even more magical if we could broadcast Game 7.”

Edwards announced his retirement at the tip of the Bruins' regular season, indicating that this final playoff run could be his final appearance within the locker room. Edwards, whose passionate and colourful commentary resonated with Bruins fans (and infrequently drew the ire of opponents), began calling games for NESN in 2005.

In recent seasons, questions have arisen about Edwards and his speech issues, together with his normally rapid speech hampered at times.

In a conversation with Chad Finn earlier this season, Edwards said he received no clarity from doctors concerning the reason behind his slowed speech.

“I didn’t have an accident,” Edwards told Finn. “I don’t have cancer. I don't have dementia. I didn't have a stroke. All of this was made by measure. General Neurology confirmed.

“They've done tests that make it seem like I'm living through some kind of science fiction scene, but that's really true. The images in my brain reveal literally nothing. That’s my joke with them.”

Edwards noted within the press release announcing his retirement last month that he was “no longer able to meet the standards that I have set for myself, the fans, the players, the Bruins organization and NESN.” to honor the very best all of them deserve.”

A decisive win by Boston in Games 5 or 6 would have been a way more fitting end to Edwards' lengthy tenure overseeing the Bruins' games. But despite Thursday's disappointing result, Edwards ended the printed with a final farewell and salute to the Bruins.

“See you all,” Edwards remarked. “Long live the Boston Bruins.”
