About 25 people were arrested within the early hours of Tuesday morning after a gathering of over 100 law enforcement officials in riot gear arrived at Cal Poly Humboldt Gaza. Riot police arrived around 2:30 a.m. No injuries were reported Tuesday by the university or a legal observer.

Around 9 p.m. on Monday, a police automobile arrived and played a pre-recorded message warning protesters that they were in an illegal assembly and that those remaining could possibly be exposed to projectiles and chemicals. Over the subsequent few hours, a police automobile pulled as much as an entrance and played the message, giving protesters quarter-hour to go away. First, the demonstrators rushed to the barrier by automobile and demanded that the police “go home”. As the night progressed and more students emerged from the quad and recognized the pattern, the response diminished.

The occupation dwindled from a whole bunch to just about a couple of dozen over the past week, and it was the identical Monday evening that began with a protest by a whole bunch outside the occupation near the library circle. District Attorney Stacey Eads said Tuesday morning that she had not yet received police reports on the arrests and had not yet filed charges.

On Monday evening, a representative for the California Faculty Association told the Times-Standard that no penalties had yet been reported for participating faculty, nevertheless it stays to be seen how the arrests will change. Some students received interim suspension notices via email, barring them from campus. CFA Humboldt's board of directors condemned the arrests, calling the actions “another dangerous escalation of their response to a peaceful demonstration on campus.”

As our coalition grows, so does the strength of our call for peace. “Unlike the university administration, we did not respond to our critics with brutality or intimidation, and yet we were treated as if we posed a threat to the campus,” the suspended students said in an announcement.

Cal Poly Humboldt officials are closing the campus for the rest of the semester and classes will proceed remotely as pro-Palestinian student activists refuse to finish the occupation of two academic buildings.

This closure means anyone on campus without permission from university police is subject to a citation or arrest, the university wrote in a press release Saturday. Students living on campus are asked to maneuver only between their residence halls and residence halls and are usually not permitted to be in other parts of campus “until further updates.”

The campus in far northern California had already been closed since Monday, when dozens of scholars arrange camp in Siemens Hall, a tutorial and administrative constructing on the Arcata school, in an indication of “solidarity with those facing genocide in Gaza.” the organizers said. They demanded that the university divest itself from Israeli corporations and weapons manufacturers.

University administration called in riot police to clear the camp, resulting in a clash with protesters and three arrests.

“Those who stay there are not staying there for noble reasons. They are criminals,” university President Tom Jackson told the Eureka Times-Standard.

Jackson also said the closure, scheduled to last until May 10, could impact the beginning scheduled for the next day.

On Friday afternoon, administrators demanded that students end the occupation of two buildings, Siemens Hall and Nelson Hall East, by 5 p.m. or face arrest. Students who peacefully complied “would not be immediately arrested,” the university said, but could still face further “sanctions related to university conduct or legal consequences.”

But on Friday evening, several student activists remained in Siemens Hall and said they’d not leave until the university met their demands Student newspaper reported.

Show photos from contained in the Siemens hall Jackson's office was spray-painted with messages reminiscent of “Viva viva Palestina!” and “Blood on your hands.” Protesters also scattered desks and chairs throughout the halls and covered the partitions with pro-Palestinian graffiti.

University administrators told the Los Angeles Times that the damage could cost the college tens of millions of dollars.

In response to protesters' calls for divestment, the university said its investments in Israeli corporations or defense firms represent lower than 1% of its endowment portfolio. The university's endowment is invested in mutual funds, which regularly pool securities and reflect the portfolio of several different investment managers.

“We would welcome the opportunity to discuss investment policy in the future,” they wrote in a press release shared with protesters.

Student protests have succeeded prior to now in demanding divestment. In response to student activism, the university's board pledged in 2014 to convert 10% of its portfolio, including investment funds, into “green funds” that haven’t any holdings in fossil fuels.

Students at campuses across California — including UC Berkeley, Stanford and the University of Southern California — have occupied their campuses over the past week to protest the continued war between Israel and Hamas. The Cal Poly Humboldt camp was certainly one of the primary to bring students from the quadrangle into a tutorial constructing.

Addressing protesters, Jackson said he would love to proceed the dialogue about Israel and Palestine outside the buildings.

“Our goal is not to be confrontational, but to continue the dialogue behind the scenes and not bring more attention to this community. This community does not need this type of national attention,” Jackson said.

An occupation of Siemens Hall at Cal Poly Humboldt that began Monday is underway. Every entrance to the constructing was barricaded Tuesday morning after activists successfully stopped a line of police in riot gear from evacuating students the previous evening. According to the university, three were arrested on the scene, where tons of of demonstrators eventually gathered.

Cal Poly Humboldt estimates there are dozens of scholars still within the constructing.

Activists said Tuesday the constructing was chosen since the administration works there. The occupation is asking on the university to divest from firms that sell weapons to Israel. They are collaborating in some activities at US universities this week.

“They will not leave the university or move until it is completely separated from Israel,” said Jasmine Jolly, who helped coordinate breakfast outside the constructing on Tuesday morning. The Times-Standard was not allowed access contained in the constructing.

The demonstrators began the motion on Monday around 5 p.m. A university press release said classes there have been canceled and courses that were in session on the time of the occupation were evacuated. The constructing was closed after protesters refused to depart the constructing voluntarily.

Police presence from various agencies in the world increased throughout the day. It is unclear what number of law enforcement officials ultimately arrived on campus. Eyewitnesses estimated dozens of officers. A bunch of police equipped with riot gear attempted to enter the constructing but were blocked by plenty of activists.

“In the end, two students stood in a queue in front of the police. They finally said we want to go. “Could you please let us out?” said Jolly, who said the protesters gave police a path to depart.

According to Cal Poly Humboldt, all law enforcement officials left Monday evening around 11:30 p.m.

The university announced Monday evening that the campus would remain closed until Wednesday for safety reasons and that some courses would proceed to happen online. The university cited demonstrators who barricaded themselves within the constructing as the rationale.

“Several protesters inside the building barricaded themselves with furniture, destroyed portions of the building, and blocked entrances and elevators with tents, violating fire codes and posing extreme safety risks to those inside,” a press release said Monday evening.

It is unclear how many individuals were injured in clashes between police and residents of the constructing.

Students surrounding the constructing celebrated Tuesday's occupation of a constructing as a part of the protest movement, which has led to actions at universities including Yale, Ann Arbor in Michigan, Columbia and New York.

The Associated Press reports the deaths of greater than 34,000 Palestinians within the Gaza Strip within the Hamas-Israel war following a Hamas attack in Israel on October 7, sparking a humanitarian crisis as Israel's bombardment of civilians continues.

The Cal Poly Humboldt Police Department declined to reply questions on Monday, saying questions must be sent to the university's marketing and communications department. Phone calls and email questions went unanswered before the Times-Standard went to press.

Cal Poly Humboldt called the situation dangerous in a news release and warned people to remain away. Activists who spoke to the Times-Standard said police sparked the violence.

“When the police were here, tensions were so high and so they were so aggressive. They attacked students. They carried a lady out by her legs and arms. Their presence created a really indignant, hostile atmosphere. And this morning there's no police, just numerous people sitting around drinking coffee and talking about what's happening in Palestine,” Greg Bee said outside the constructing on Tuesday.

An Instagram post from Humboldt for Palestine, which states that they didn’t organize the occupation but moderately that it was an “organic CPH student organizing movement,” said that the scholars usually are not negotiating until the divestment occurs. The post said the scholars had further demands.

A Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine flag hung above the constructing's sign on Tuesday. “Stop the Genocide” and “Free from the River Palestine to the Sea” were spray-painted on the Theater Arts constructing.

Jolly noted that local activists have tried other methods, comparable to a ceasefire resolution passed by the Arcata City Council and attempting to get Eureka to pass the same resolution, in addition to weekly protests outside the courthouse.
