<h2>From animals to mosquitoes</h2>

<p>New research I conducted with rhesus macaques suggests that in relation to decisions like voting, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1101/2024.09.17.613526">Humans are nowhere near as rational</a> as they would love to imagine.</p>
<p>It&#39;s easy to associate instinctive reactions &#8211; just like the fight-or-flight response or the reflexive withdrawal from a hot surface &#8211; with the primitive survival motive. But humans even have rational brains that may gather and weigh evidence by fascinated about it thoughtfully slightly than counting on knee-jerk reactions. <p>These monkeys are <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-49922-6">remarkably just like humans</a> <a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/hmg/ddn167">genetically</a>, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1098/rstb.2019.0612">physiological</a> And <a href="https://doi.org/10.1186/1866-1955-4-21">behaviorally</a>. These similarities have allowed researchers to make incredible medical breakthroughs, including the event of <a href="https://doi.org/10.1523/JNEUROSCI.1458-24.2024">Polio, HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 vaccines</a>in addition to <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1902300116">Treating Parkinson&#39;s disease with deep brain stimulation</a> and other neurological disorders.</p>

<p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2013.03.022">Previous research</a> <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2005.01.044">helps explain the monkeys&#39; gaze bias</a>. When monkeys were shown pictures of unfamiliar but powerful male monkeys, they only glanced at them briefly, presumably because monkeys interpret staring as an indication of aggression. But their gaze stuck after they were shown a male or female monkey of low status.</p>
<p>These preferences got here into sharp relief after we showed the macaques photos from recent races with Donald Trump. Their gaze bias, driven by primitive instincts, gave away the winners. The monkeys searched for the longest time on the Democratic opponent in the competition between Trump and Hillary Clinton. There were fewer eye distortions within the matchup with Joe Biden. And the monkeys spent about as long on the lookout for Trump as they did for Harris. This signifies that of the three recent Democratic candidates, Harris has the perfect probability of winning against Trump based on visual characteristics alone.</p>
<h2>An evolutionary cat</h2>
<p>Our results suggest that voters respond instinctively to signs of physical strength &#8211; <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-018-06987-4">Clues which can be equally obvious</a> <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s10764-019-00104-y">to our monkey relatives</a>. This “evolutionary hangover” illustrates how traits and behaviors that were once essential to survival persist even after they are not any longer relevant.</p>
<p>Macaque monkeys&#39; ability to predict winners based on their physical characteristics alone challenges the concept humans have evolved beyond superficial judgments in relation to choosing leaders. For those that pride themselves on rational decision-making, especially in relation to essential decisions like voting, this can be a surprising discovery.</p>
<p>Clearly, people&#39;s decisions are usually not based solely on visual cues. However, the evidence suggests that such aspects could have a greater impact than you&#8217;re thinking that. As you enter the voting booth, a part of your brain could also be counting on old instincts, subconsciously assessing who appears best suited to guide the tribe.</p>

<h2>Stay rational, not primal</h2>

<p>Political campaigns already capitalize on these instincts by emphasizing a candidate&#39;s physical strength and assertiveness. As voters, we are able to counter their efforts by counting on our rational brains&#39; ability to know and evaluate their policies and experiences &#8211; something our primitive ancestors couldn&#8217;t do.</p>

<p>NASA <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/humans-in-space/artemis/">Artemis program</a> plans to return humans to the Moon this decade with a view to practice and prepare for a Mars mission as early because the 2030s. While NASA has several reasons for pursuing such an ambitious mission, crucial reason is scientific exploration and discovery.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m <a href="https://www.wm.edu/as/appliedscience/people/researchfaculty/levine-j.php">an atmospheric scientist and former NASA researcher</a> helped determine the scientific questions a Mars mission would investigate. There are many mysteries to explore on the Red Planet, including why Mars looks the best way it does today and whether it has ever harbored life, past or present. </p>

<h2>Geology of Mars</h2>
<p>Mars is <a href="https://archive.org/details/travelersguideto00will">an interesting planet</a> from a geological and atmospheric standpoint. It formed with the remainder of the solar system <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/solar-system-facts/">about 4.6 billion years ago</a>. <p>Scientists know lots in regards to the planet&#39;s surface by sending robotic missions, but there are still many interesting geological features that must be studied in additional detail. These features could tell researchers more in regards to the formation of the solar system.</p>
<p>The northern and southern hemispheres of Mars look very different. <p>Mars has that too <a href="https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/space-science/olympus-mons">largest volcanoes that scientists have observed</a> within the solar system. Its surface is peppered with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_craters_on_Mars">deep craters</a> by asteroid and meteor impacts that occurred within the early history of Mars. Sending astronauts to check these features may help researchers understand how and when necessary events occurred in Mars&#39; early history.</p>

<h2>Ask the precise questions</h2>
<p>NASA formed a committee called the Human Exploration of Mars Science Analysis Group to plan the long run mission. Along with NASA scientist James B. <h2>How do you get to Mars?</h2>
<p>To send people to Mars and return them safely to Earth, NASA has developed a brand new, very powerful launch vehicle called <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/humans-in-space/space-launch-system/">Space Launch System</a> and a brand new one <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/humans-in-space/orion-spacecraft/">human carrier spacecraft called Orion</a>. </p>
<p>To prepare and train astronauts for all times on Mars and exploration of Mars, NASA has launched a brand new program to return humans to the Moon <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/green-moon-kyoto.pdf">Artemis program</a>. </p>
<p>In mythology, Artemis was the dual sister of Apollo. The Artemis astronauts will live and work on the moon for months to organize for all times and work on Mars. </p>

<p><a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission/artemis-i/">The Space Launch System and Orion</a> Successful launch on November 16, 2022 as a part of the Artemis I mission. It was the Artemis program&#39;s first unmanned flight to the moon, and there Orion orbited the moon for six days, traveling as much as 80 miles (129 kilometers) above the surface. </p>
<p>Artemis I landed back on Earth on December 11, 2022, after its 1.4 million mile (2.2 million kilometer) maiden voyage. </p>
<p><a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission/artemis-iii/">Artemis III</a>is the primary mission to return humans to the lunar surface <a href="https://www.lpi.usra.edu/Artemis/">planned for 2026</a>. The Artemis astronauts will land on the moon&#39;s south pole, where scientists imagine there could also be large deposits of underground water in the shape of ice that astronauts could mine, melt, purify and drink. The Artemis astronauts will establish habitats on the lunar surface and spend several months exploring the lunar surface. </p>
<p>Since the moon is one <a href="https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/moon-distance/en/">just 240,000 miles (386,000 km) from Earth</a>it&#8217;ll function a training ground for future human exploration of Mars. While a Mars mission remains to be a few years away, the Artemis program will help NASA develop the capabilities it must explore the Red Planet.</p>

<p>Maybe they might learn a thing or two from a <a href="https://www.debunkbot.com/conspiracies">AI-powered chatbot</a>.</p>
<p>In a series of experiments, the substitute chatbot managed to unsettle greater than 1 / 4 of respondents about their favorite conspiracy theory. The average conversation lasted lower than 8½ minutes.</p>

<p>“People who believe in conspiracy theories rarely, if ever, change their minds,” said the study leader <a href="https://www.american.edu/cas/faculty/tcostello.cfm">Thomas Costello</a>a psychologist at American University who studies political and social beliefs. &#8220;In some ways, it feels better to believe that there is a secret society that controls everything than to believe that entropy and chaos reign.&#8221;</p>
<p>But the study suggests that the issue lies not within the persuasiveness of the facts, but in our inability to supply the appropriate combination of facts to refute the precise reasons for an individual&#39;s skepticism.</p>
<p>Costello and his colleagues attributed the chatbot’s success to the <a href="https://8cz637-thc.shinyapps.io/ConspiracyDebunkingConversations/">detailed, tailor-made arguments</a> It was created for every of the two,190 study participants with whom it interacted.</p>

<p>The researchers first asked Americans to rate the extent to which they agreed with 15 common conspiracy theories, including the speculation that the virus chargeable for COVID-19 was developed by the Chinese government and that the U.S. military has concealed evidence of a UFO landing in Roswell, New Mexico. After completing one other task, participants were asked to explain a conspiracy theory they found particularly compelling and explain why they believed it.</p>
<p>The prompt prompted 72% of them to share their feelings a few conspiracy theory. Of this group, 60% were randomly chosen to debate the speculation using the massive language model. <a href="https://platform.openai.com/docs/models/gpt-4-turbo-and-gpt-4">GPT-4 Turbo</a>.</p>

Their approval rankings dropped by a median of 21%.</p>
<p>In 27 percent of cases, the decline was so great that researchers could assume that the person “was no longer able to cope with their belief in a conspiracy.”</p>
<p>The 40 percent of participants who served as a control group were also given summaries of their favorite conspiracy theory and rated them on a scale of 0 to 100. They then chatted with the chatbot about neutral topics similar to the U.S. healthcare system or the relative merits of cats and dogs. When these people were asked to reconsider their conspiracy theory summaries, their rankings dropped by a median of just one percent.</p>
<p>The researchers surveyed the people ten days and two months later to see if the results had worn off. They had not.</p>
<p>The team repeated the experiment with a distinct group, asking people about their views on conspiracy theories in a rather more roundabout way. This time, discussing their chosen theory with the bot resulted in a 19.4 percent drop of their rating, in comparison with a 2.9 percent drop for many who chatted about something else.</p>
<p>The talks “really changed people’s minds,” said co-author <a href="https://davidrand-cooperation.com/about">David Rand</a>a computational social scientist at MIT who studies how people make decisions.</p>
<p>&#8220;The effect did not vary significantly depending on which conspiracy was named and discussed,&#8221; Rand said. &#8220;It worked for classic conspiracies like the JFK assassination and the rumors about the moon landing and <a href="https://theweek.com/62399/what-is-the-illuminati-and-what-does-it-control">Illuminati</a>things like that. And it also worked for modern, more politicized conspiracies like those surrounding election fraud in 2020 or COVID-19.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;It wasn&#39;t mind control, it was just, you know, getting people to do what they wanted,&#8221; Rand said. &#8220;Basically, it was following the facts.&#8221;</p>
<p>Researchers not involved within the study called it a welcome advance.</p>
<p>In <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.ads0433" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an essay</a> who accompanied the study, psychologist <a href="https://research.tilburguniversity.edu/en/persons/bence-bag%C3%B3">Bence Bago</a> of Tilberg University within the Netherlands and cognitive psychologist <a href="https://jfbonnefon.github.io/">Jean-François Bonnefon</a> of the Toulouse School of Economics in France said the experiments showed that &#8220;a scalable intervention to recalibrate false beliefs may be within reach.&#8221;</p>
<p>The researchers conducted a primary experiment within the week after July 13. <a href="https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2024-07-13/trump-shooting-historic-moment">Assassination</a> about former President Trump. <p>&#8220;Interventions like this are basically an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We need to focus our efforts more on what&#39;s happening at the top of the cliff.&#8221;</p>

<p>We are researchers who investigate <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=Q1GAwfcAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Mechanisms that drive disease transmission between species</a> And how <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Sadie-Ryan-2">Disease affects each species conservation and humans</a>. Recent outbreaks have underscored the importance of understanding how threats to wildlife health influence the emergence and spread of zoonotic pathogens. Our research suggests that taking a look at historical outbreaks can assist predict and stop the subsequent pandemic.</p>
<h2>Backflow has happened before</h2>
<p>Our research group wanted to find out how steadily spillback events were reported within the years before the COVID-19 pandemic. A retrospective evaluation not only allows us to discover specific trends or barriers to reporting spillback events, but in addition helps us understand where recent threats are most certainly to emerge.</p>

They receive more public attention and funding than smaller and fewer visible species.</p>
<p>To make matters worse, there are difficulties <a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/ani12213032">Monitoring wild small animal populations</a>because they decay quickly and are sometimes eaten by larger animals. <h2>Humans are only a part of the network</h2>
<p>The language often used to explain interspecies transmission fails to capture its complexity and nuances. Given the variety of species which have turn out to be infected with COVID-19 through the pandemic, many scientists are calling for <a href="https://doi.org/10.1146/annurev-virology-100120-015057">Restriction on the usage of the terms “spillover” and “spillback”</a> because they describe the transmission of pathogens to and from humans. This suggests that diseases and their consequences begin and end in humans.</p>
<p>When researchers view humans as a node in a big network of transmission opportunities, they will more effectively monitor COVID-19, H5N1 and other emerging zoonoses. This involves systems considering <a href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fvets.2018.00023">Approaches similar to</a> <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/one-health/about/">A health</a> <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/S2542-5196(21)00008-5">or Planetary Health</a> <a href="https://www.planetaryhealthalliance.org/planetary-health">this recording</a> The interdependence of humans on the health of your entire environment.</p>

<p>By 2070, the overlap between humans and animals is predicted to extend in greater than half of the world&#39;s countries. The major reason for these changes is population growth. This is the important thing finding of our <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.adp7706">newly published study</a> within the journal Science Advances.</p>
<p>Our research suggests that because the population increases, humans and animals will share an increasing number of landscapes. For example, as more people move into forests and agricultural areas, the overlap between humans and animals will increase greatly. It may even increase in urban areas, as <a href="https://www.un.org/development/desa/pd/content/urbanization-0">People move to cities</a> searching for jobs and opportunities.  </p>
<p>Animals are also moving, especially in response to climate change. <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/programs/climate-adaptation-science-centers/news/data-spotlight-explore-climate-induced-range">Shifting their reach</a>. In most areas <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/species-richness">Biodiversity</a> – the variety of unique species present – ​​will decrease as animals follow their preferred climate. However, as population growth increases, there&#8217;ll still be more overlap between humans and animals in most countries.</p>
<p>We also found that areas of human-wildlife overlap will decrease because the population shifts, although these areas will likely be significantly less common than areas of increase. </p>

<p>We found that Africa can have the biggest share of land with increasing human-wildlife overlap (70.6%), followed by South America (66.5%). In contrast, Europe can have the biggest share of land where human-wildlife overlap will decrease (21.4%). </p>
<h2>Why it is vital</h2>
<p>Around the world, humans and wildlife are increasingly competing for limited living space. This can result in harmful consequences, akin to human-wildlife conflict and the spread of diseases between humans and animals.</p>
<p>However, coping with wild animals may have benefits. Birds, for instance <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.agee.2023.108395">provide useful pest control for some crops</a>And studies show that <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/10/well/move/bird-watching-health-benefits.html">Bird watching</a> and animals in nature improve people’s mental health. </p>
<p>It is essential to administer these interactions in a way that minimizes negative impacts and maximizes advantages. This is a key objective of the <a href="https://www.cbd.int/gbf/targets/4">Global framework for biodiversity</a> which nations adopted in 2022 as a blueprint for sustaining life on Earth and slowing the loss of untamed species. </p>
<p>Our findings underscore the necessity to ensure human-wildlife coexistence. Our research provides a comprehensive understanding of where changes within the human-wildlife intersection will occur in the longer term, including the hotspots that may require simpler measures to enhance human-wildlife interactions. </p>

<h2>How we worked</h2>
<p>We developed a spatial index to measure human-wildlife overlap around the globe. To calculate the degree of overlap region by region, we multiplied the population density by the variety of species present in a given area. Our study included 22,374 land-dwelling species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles. </p>
<p>By combining published datasets on recent (2015) and future (2070) populations, species distributions, and land types, we were capable of examine how human-wildlife overlap will change by 2070 and discover the places where this overlap will increase most dramatically. We then examined changes in biodiversity in each land type—cropland, grassland, urban, and forest—as human-wildlife overlap increases.</p>
<h2>What happens next?</h2>
<p>Our research broadly shows how human-wildlife intersections will change, but to know the implications, researchers will need local studies. Future research on shared lands should analyze aspects akin to species richness, species behavior and ecology, and kinds of human-wildlife interactions. </p>
<p>Policymakers can use the insights from our work to guide conservation planning in a more abundant future. For example, our forecasts might help discover locations for habitat corridors that allow wildlife to maneuver between critical habitats. They could also help discover areas that <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/fee.2189">relatively well protected against the consequences of climate change</a> over time and will function refuges for endangered species. </p>
<p>Our work can influence future investments in nature conservation, akin to <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2024.07.045">Renaturation areas</a> where population density is declining, or to conserve and enhance wildlife habitat in places where urbanization is increasing. </p>
<p>Finally, our study shows the importance of involving local communities in species conservation. In our view, using multiple conservation strategies and taking human needs into consideration is essentially the most effective option to ensure sustainable coexistence. </p>

<p>Robot vehicles can <a href="https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2301.05294">optimise traffic flow</a> in cities, even when mixed with human-driven vehicles, improving traffic efficiency, safety and energy consumption, my colleagues and I discovered.</p>
<p>Robotic vehicles aren&#8217;t any longer a science fiction concept: cities around the globe <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1805770115">have tested autonomous robot taxis</a> <a href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/after-mastering-singapores-streets-nutonomys-robotaxis-are-poised-to-take-on-new-cities">since 2016</a>Given the increasing presence of robotic vehicles on the road and the foreseeable long transition period from mixed traffic to totally autonomous traffic, my team and I asked ourselves whether robotic vehicles and their interaction with human-driven vehicles could alleviate today&#39;s well-known traffic problems.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&#038;user=kuaAAnMAAAAJ&#038;view_op=list_works&#038;sortby=pubdate">a pc scientist</a> of artificial intelligence for transportation and smart cities. My colleagues and I hypothesized that because the variety of robotic vehicles in traffic increases, we are able to use AI to develop algorithms to regulate the complex mixed traffic system. These algorithms wouldn&#8217;t only be sure that all vehicles travel easily from point A to point B, but more importantly, they&#8217;d optimize all traffic by allowing robotic vehicles to influence human-driven vehicles.</p>
<p>To test our hypothesis, we used a branch of AI often called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinforcement_learning">reinforcement learning</a>where an intelligent agent learns to maximise cumulative rewards by interacting with its environment. By setting rewards for simulated robot vehicles to prioritize goals equivalent to traffic efficiency or energy consumption, our experiments show that we are able to effectively <a href="https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2301.05294">Manage mixed traffic at complex real-world intersections</a> under real traffic conditions within the simulation. </p>
<p>Our algorithm teaches the robocars to optimize traffic flow by communicating with one another. The collective system of cars goals to make sure smooth traffic flow, regardless that each individual automotive decides when to enter an intersection based on its immediate surroundings. Since the robocars are distributed amongst cars driven by humans, all traffic is influenced by the algorithm.</p>
<p>We found that robotic vehicles only account for five% of traffic in our simulation. <a href="https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2301.05294">Traffic jams are eliminated</a>Surprisingly, our approach even shows that when robotic vehicles account for 60% of traffic, traffic efficiency <a href="https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2301.05294">Better than traffic controlled by traffic lights</a>.</p>

<h2>Why it will be important</h2>
<p>Traffic is getting worse in all major cities around the globe. <a href="https://mobility.tamu.edu/umr/report/">which results in significant economic and environmental costs</a>. It is one in all the most important problems facing society today. Current methods of traffic control, equivalent to traffic lights, have <a href="https://mobility.tamu.edu/project/evaluating-regional-traffic-signal-performance-measures-using-crowd-sourced-data-in-2021-urban-mobility-report/">limited effectiveness in reducing delays and congestion</a>. </p>
<p>AI-controlled robotic vehicles offer a possible solution, but existing studies <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jtte.2018.09.005">require universal connectivity and central control</a> of all robotic vehicles, a scenario that&#8217;s unlikely to occur within the foreseeable future. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1805770115">The transition to totally autonomous traffic is more likely to happen regularly</a>leading to a chronic period of mixed traffic consisting of each robot and human-controlled vehicles. </p>
<p>This has led us to develop control algorithms that use robotic vehicles to understand the societal advantages of autonomous transport systems without requiring all and even the vast majority of vehicles to be autonomous.</p>
<h2>What other research is being carried out</h2>
<p>Recent studies have shown <a href="https://doi.org/10.1109/TRO.2021.3087314">Potential of mixed traffic control</a> in scenarios equivalent to ring roads, figure-eight roads, motorway bottlenecks and mergers, intersections and roundabouts. However, these scenarios are frequently not as complex as in the actual world and only involve a limited variety of vehicles that should be coordinated. </p>
<p>Our work is the primary to display the feasibility of mixed-traffic control by robotic vehicles at real-world, complex intersections. The ability to regulate traffic at these intersections is a vital step toward city-wide traffic control. </p>
<h2>What&#39;s next</h2>
<p>We plan to increase our framework to include additional driving behaviors for robot vehicles, equivalent to frequent lane changes. We also plan to check our approach at different intersection types, and we would love to check our approach under real-world conditions of vehicle-to-vehicle communication. </p>
<p>Our goal is <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.11347">effective and efficient management of mixed traffic at city level</a>. </p>

<p>When I used to be in middle school, my biology teacher showed our class the science fiction film “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCgWzlxnqhc">Star Trek III: The Search for Spock</a>.”</p>
<p>The plot captivated me with its portrayal of the “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAoEU3HcCRk">Genesis Project</a>“” – a brand new technology that transformed a dead alien world right into a world vigorous. </p>
<p>After watching the movie, my teacher asked us to write down an essay about this technology. Was it realistic? Was it ethical? And to channel our inner Spock, was it logical? This task had a huge effect on me. </p>
<p>Fast forward to today, and <a href="https://engr.psu.edu/directory/directory-detail-g.aspx?q=SGB100">I&#8217;m an engineer and professor</a> Development of technologies to expand human presence beyond Earth. </p>
<p>For example: I&#8217;m working on advanced propulsion systems to take spacecraft beyond Earth orbit. I&#8217;m helping to develop lunar constructing technologies to support NASA&#39;s goal of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/humans-in-space/artemis/">long-term human presence on the moon</a>And I used to be in a team that showed <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1TWlNWHrsw">How to 3D print habitats on Mars</a>. </p>
<p>Providing supplies to people beyond Earth would require an ideal deal of time, energy and imagination, but engineers and scientists have begun to deal with the various challenges.</p>

<h2>An incomplete checklist: food, water, shelter, air</h2>
<p>After the Moon, Mars is the subsequent logical place for humans outside of Earth. </p>
<p>But is it possible to terraform Mars &#8211; that&#8217;s, to remodel it into something more like Earth and support life &#8211; or is that this only a fantasy from science fiction?</p>
<p>To continue to exist Mars, humans need liquid water, food, shelter, and an environment that gives enough oxygen to breathe and is thick enough to retain heat and protect against the sun&#39;s radiation. </p>
<p>But the Martian atmosphere is <a href="https://www.space.com/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html">just about all carbon dioxide</a>practically without oxygen. And it is vitally thin &#8211; only about 1% as dense because the Earth. </p>
<p>The thinner an environment, the less heat it could actually store. Earth&#39;s atmosphere is thick enough to store enough heat to sustain life. <a href="https://climatekids.nasa.gov/greenhouse-effect/">just like the greenhouse effect</a>. </p>
<p>On Mars, nevertheless, the atmosphere is so thin that the temperature recurrently drops to -101 degrees Celsius (150 degrees Fahrenheit below zero) at night. </p>
<p>So what&#8217;s the most effective method to give Mars an environment?</p>
<p>Although there are not any lively volcanoes on Mars – so far as we all know – scientists could trigger volcanic eruptions through nuclear explosions. The deeply trapped gases <a href="https://marsed.asu.edu/mep/volcanoes">in a volcano</a> can be released after which <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/programs/VHP/volcanoes-can-affect-climate">drift into the atmosphere</a>But this plan is a bit crazy since the explosions would also release deadly radioactive material into the air. </p>

<h2>Making Mars comfortable</h2>
<p>There are quite a few ways to heat up the planet. For example, giant mirrors in-built space and placed in orbit around Mars could <a href="https://www.pbs.org/exploringspace/mars/terraforming/page4.html#:%7E">reflect sunlight onto the surface</a> and warm it up. </p>
<p>A recent study suggested that Mars colonists could spread <a href="https://seas.harvard.edu/news/2019/07/material-way-make-mars-habitable">Aerogel</a>an ultralight solid material, on the bottom. The aerogel would act as insulation and retain heat. This could occur anywhere on Mars, including the polar ice caps, where the aerogel could melt the prevailing ice and create liquid water. </p>
<p>To grow food, you would like soil. On Earth, soil consists of <a href="https://www.nature.com/scitable/knowledge/library/what-are-soils-67647639/">five ingredients</a>: minerals, organic substances, living organisms, gases and water. </p>
<p>However, Mars is roofed by a layer of loose, dust-like material, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/regolith">Regolith</a>Think of it as Martian sand. The regolith accommodates few nutrients, not enough for healthy plant growth, and it accommodates some harmful chemicals. <a href="https://sites.bsu.edu/enact/mars-its-deadly-dirty-secrets/">so-called perchlorates</a>used on earth in fireworks and explosives. </p>
<p>Clean the regolith and transform it into something usable <a href="https://www.sciencenews.org/article/mars-farming-harder-martian-regolith-soil">wouldn&#8217;t be easy</a>What foreign soil needs <a href="https://letstalkscience.ca/educational-resources/backgrounders/soil-on-mars">is a Mars fertilizer</a>possibly by adding <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/extremophile">Extremophiles</a> robust microbes imported from Earth and <a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/extremophile.html">survive even the harshest conditions</a>Genetically modified organisms are also a possibility.  </p>
<p>Through photosynthesis, these organisms would begin converting carbon dioxide into oxygen. As Mars eventually became more hospitable to Earth-like organisms, colonists were in a position to introduce more complex plants and even animals. </p>
<p>Providing oxygen, water and food in the precise quantities is incredibly complex. On Earth, scientists have tried to simulate this <a href="https://biosphere2.org/">in Biosphere 2</a>a closed ecosystem with ocean, tropical and desert habitats. Although all habitats in Biosphere 2 are controlled, even there scientists struggle to seek out the precise balance. Mother Nature really knows what she&#39;s doing.</p>

<h2>A house on Mars</h2>
<p>Buildings may very well be manufactured using 3D printing. First, they&#8217;d need to be pressurized and guarded until temperatures and air conditions on Mars are much like those on Earth. <a href="https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2023/05/nasa-developing-autonomous-construction-on-the-moon-and-mars.html">Technologies for the autonomous construction of planets from the Moon to Mars</a> The program explores how exactly this could be achieved.   </p>
<p>There are many other challenges. For example <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/science-research/planetary-science/earths-magnetosphere/">different from the earth</a>Mars has no <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/magnetosphere">Magnetosphere</a>that protects a planet from solar wind and cosmic radiation. Without a magnetic field, an excessive amount of radiation penetrates for living beings to stay healthy. There are <a href="https://news.mit.edu/2010/explained-dynamo-0325">Possibilities for generating a magnetic field</a>but to date the scientific status could be very speculative. </p>
<p>In fact, all the technologies I even have described are far beyond the present capabilities required to terraform Mars. Their development would require enormous amounts of research and money, probably far more than is feasible within the near future. Although the Genesis device from Star Trek III could terraform a planet in a matter of minutes, terraforming Mars would take centuries and even millennia.</p>
<p>And before we start turning Mars right into a second Earth, many ethical questions have to be addressed. Is it right to alter one other planet so drastically and permanently?</p>
<p>If all this disappoints you, don&#39;t be. As scientists develop innovations to terraform Mars, we&#39;ll also use them to make life higher on Earth. Remember the technology we&#39;re developing to 3D print habitats on Mars? <p>In these places <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/pastoralism">Shepherd communities</a> Camels, yaks and other livestock graze over vast areas. The problem is that the wild relatives of those animals often live nearby and big, testosterone-driven wild males attempt to mate with domesticated or tamed relatives.</p>
<p>Both animals and humans lose out in these encounters. Shepherds who try to guard their native populations risk <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gecco.2024.e02959">Injuries, emotional trauma, economic losses and sometimes death</a>Wild intruders could be chased away, harassed or killed. </p>
<p>These clashes threaten iconic and endangered species, including <a href="https://china.wcs.org/Wildlife/Wild-Yak.aspx">Tibetan wild yaks</a>, <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/facts/bactrian-camel">wild two-humped camels</a> And <a href="https://thailand.wcs.org/en-us/Wildlife/Asian-Elephant.aspx">Asia&#39;s forest elephants</a>If wild species are protected, herders could also be prohibited from hunting or harming them, even when it could be needed for self-defense.</p>
<p>Human-wildlife conflict is a well known challenge world wide, yet clashes in these distant outposts receive less attention than those in developed areas, corresponding to <a href="https://www.ktvu.com/news/mountain-lion-visits-two-milpitas-neighborhoods">Pumas are moving into US suburbs</a>In my view, protecting threatened and endangered species just isn&#8217;t possible without also helping the herders whose lives are affected by conservation policies. </p>

<h2>The urge to mate</h2>
<p>The force that drives these attacks is pure biology. All pets are <a href="https://doi.org/10.1017/S0030605318000601">descended from wild ancestors</a>. Over the course of evolution, natural selection has favored males that fertilize essentially the most females &#8211; and females that leave behind reproductive offspring of their very own. The attraction can go each ways: sometimes smaller or less aggressive domesticated males mate with wild females.</p>
<p>Many pastoral societies face this challenge. <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Hindu-Kush">Hindu Kush mountain system</a> In Central Asia and further east, Tibetans, Uighurs, Changpa and Nepalese raise yaks for meat, milk, transportation and shaggy fur for clothing. </p>
<p>Wild yaks were once considered extinct in Nepal until a team led by wildlife biologist <a href="https://scholar.google.co.uk/citations?user=XQZm4w4AAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Naresh Kusi</a> <a href="https://doi.org/10.1515/mammalia-2015-0066">rediscovered it in 2014</a>Today, aggressive conflicts between domesticated and wild yaks are a significant concern for local herders.</p>
<p>In Africa there are mountain zebras within the Namib Desert, <a href="http://www.equids.org/mzebra.php">endangered species</a>have been <a href="http://the-eis.com/elibrary/search/11498">bred by donkeys</a>In northern China and Mongolia, native and reintroduced <a href="https://www.britannica.com/animal/Przewalskis-horse">Przewalski horses</a> coexist in tense zones where herders try to stop genetic exchange. In Southeast Asia, wild cattle species live, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/animal/gaur">like Gaur</a> <a href="https://www.britannica.com/animal/banteng">and bull</a>have <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gecco.2024.e02959">extensively mixed</a> with domestic cattle and buffalo.</p>
<p>In northern realms, caribou and reindeer, which belong to the identical species, <em>Rangifer taranadus</em>each occur in wild forms. Reindeer have also been domesticated and are <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/40509079">central to indigenous pastoral cultures</a> in Scandinavia, Russia, Canada and Alaska. Caribou slaughter and separation efforts couldn&#8217;t prevent the interbreeding. </p>
<p>In the temperate zones of Europe and Asia, native species corresponding to <a href="https://www.britannica.com/animal/ibex">Ibexes or wild goats</a>And <a href="https://www.britannica.com/animal/argali">Argali, the most important wild sheep on the earth</a>cause problems by mixing with domesticated goats and sheep. In South America <a href="https://www.britannica.com/animal/guanaco">Guanacos – relatives of untamed camels</a> – occur from sea level to the snow line within the Andes and try and interbreed with domesticated llamas. </p>

<h2>The wild and the tame</h2>
<p>All over the world, people breed about <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/263979/global-cattle-population-since-1990/">5 billion head of livestock</a>In most areas, the wild ancestors have long since died out, so herders wouldn&#8217;t have to fret about cross-breeding.</p>
<p>The wild relatives that survive are often rare or endangered. For example, there are about <a href="http://www.atnesa.org/donkeys/donkeys-starkey-populations.pdf">43 million domesticated donkeys</a>also called donkeys, worldwide. But within the Horn of Africa, the one remaining place with indigenous ancestors, <a href="https://ielc.libguides.com/sdzg/factsheets/africanwildass/population">lower than 600 wild donkeys survive today</a>. </p>
<p>The same asymmetry exists within the Himalayan highlands, where the variety of wild yaks – a species extremely necessary to the Tibetan population – is estimated at about 15,000 to twenty,000, in comparison with <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/yaklink">14 million domesticated yaks</a>Worldwide, for each wild Bactrian camel, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1186/s13570-020-00176-z">about 2,500 domesticated brothers</a>. </p>
<p>Even in protected areas in northern India, western Mongolia and western China, the population of livestock exceeds that of ungulates. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/cobi.12100">by an element of about 19 to 1</a>. </p>
<p>As wild populations shrink, the remaining males have less mating potential, making them more more likely to hunt domesticated females. But cross-breeding with domesticated animals <a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/cobi.13867">may lead to the extinction of some wild animals</a> as genetically different species.</p>
<h2>No easy solution</h2>
<p>It is difficult enough for herders to make a living on the perimeters of the earth without wild animals raiding their herds. Often, sticks and stones are the one legal weapons that herders can use to defend their animals or themselves. Firearms are rare and infrequently illegal, either since the wild species is protected or since the land <a href="https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/countries-where-guns-are-illegal">prohibits or restricts the possession of weapons</a>.  </p>

<p>Global conservation policy recognizes the plight of herders. <a href="https://www.iucn.org/our-union/members">International Union for Conservation of Nature</a>a network of governments and non-governmental organizations committed to preserving life on Earth, <a href="https://www.iucn.nl/en/blog/indigenous-peoples-and-biodiversity/">reaffirms that indigenous peoples play a key role</a> in protecting endangered species and preserving the genetic purity of those wild animals. </p>
<p>Many national governments also support the protection of untamed species and the support of nomadic pastoralists, at the least in principle. However, these broad objectives will not be at all times met on the local level, particularly when the people concerned are pastoralists living in distant areas where government assistance is difficult to acquire.  </p>

<h2>Coexistence in a crowded world</h2>
<p>When herders have to protect their herds from other threats corresponding to snow leopards, brown bears or wolves, their principal options are to erect fences, avoid areas where carnivores are present or kill the predators. Shepherds also castrate their pets to stop them from <a href="https://thecowdocs.wordpress.com/2014/07/14/why-do-we-castrate-bulls/">Fights with other animals within the herd or attacks on humans</a>.</p>
<p>None of those options are suitable for coping with wild ancestors of species corresponding to yaks and camels. Castrating wild males or restricting their range makes it difficult to guard and reproduce threatened species.</p>
<p>Fences are harmful because they will prevent wild grazers from moving seasonally to other habitats. Wildlife migrations are necessary not just for the herd: because the animals roam and graze over wide areas, they fertilize the grasslands. Arming ranchers against wayward and aggressive wild males could appear justified, however the destruction of endangered species is <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/B978-0-323-85775-8.00004-2">a nasty nature conservation path</a>.  </p>
<p>Respect for the normal cultural practices of indigenous peoples is very important. <a href="https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/cop15-ends-landmark-biodiversity-agreement">international agreements to guard biodiversity</a>In my view, these human-wildlife conflicts require serious discussions involving ranchers, conservationists, and native and national governments to develop pragmatic strategies. </p>
<p>Without creative solutions to stop interbreeding, more iconic animals will follow the disappointing paths of <a href="https://www.deerspecialistgroup.org/article/1060/">wild reindeer</a>, <a href="https://www.fws.gov/species/plains-bison-bison-bison-bison">bison</a> and other wild species are fighting for his or her survival as they increasingly clash with human society.</p>

<p>Neurotech startup Paradromics will test its brain implant next yr because the race for the highest spot in brain-computer interfaces heats up.</p>
<p>&#8220;The brain is a super fascinating organ. We have about 85 billion neurons and each neuron is a million times slower than a computer chip. And yet the brain does incredible things,&#8221; said Matt Angle, CEO and founding father of Paradromics, in an interview with &#8220;CNBC Tech: The Edge.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;This means that if you want to get data in and out of the brain, you need to be able to communicate with a lot of different neurons at the same time. And that&#39;s where the focus comes from on building these high-speed, high-data-rate devices,&#8221; he added.</p>
<p>The trial followed rival Neuralink&#39;s try and implant a chip right into a patient&#39;s brain in March. The company, co-founded by Elon Musk, later announced that a part of its brain implant malfunctioned within the weeks following the procedure.</p>
<p>Founded in 2015, Paradromics has raised $87 million in enterprise capital and $18 million in public funding thus far. The Austin, Texas-based startup expects the devices to retail for about $100,000 a unit.</p>
<p>&#8220;Paradromics&#39; mission is to transform otherwise untreatable brain diseases into solvable technology problems. Essentially, we are building a medical device that addresses unmet needs,&#8221; Angle said.</p>
<p>While Angle expects the device to treat a big selection of conditions, Paradromics will initially concentrate on patients who&#8217;ve lost their ability to speak, whether on account of paralysis, a disease comparable to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also referred to as ALS) or a spinal cord injury.</p>
<p>“We decided to focus on motor and language because these topics are widely discussed in our research community and the scientific evidence on them is available,” said Vikash Gilja, Paradromics’ chief scientific officer.</p>
<p>&#8220;Paradromy can leverage science and apply the right engineering to take us from research to medical device,&#8221; he added.</p>
<p>Gilja told CNBC that the device is powered wirelessly and doesn&#8217;t have to be charged.</p>
<p>&#8220;The only thing you have to do as a user is to go through a short calibration routine to learn the mapping of electrical signals to intentions. But once that mapping is learned, the system can be used,&#8221; Gilja said.</p>
<p>Angle hopes that Paradromics will receive industrial approval to sell the product as early as 2029.</p>
<p>&#8220;We expect that the first million people who have brain-computer interfaces will use them to treat serious diseases,&#8221; Angle said.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think in 20 years the discussion might be different and some of these devices might be suitable for consumers as well. In the meantime, however, we are really focused on building safe, reliable and robust devices for people with physical and mental disabilities.&#8221;</p>
