Why does a rocket need to travel 25,000 miles per hour (about 40,000 kilometers per hour) to flee Earth? – Bo H., age 10, Durham, New Hampshire

There's a reason why a rocket has to go so fast to flee Earth. It's about gravity – something for all of us Experience every moment of daily.

Gravity is the force that pulls you towards the bottom. And that's a superb thing. Gravity keeps you grounded; otherwise you’ll float into space.

But gravity also makes it difficult to go away Earth when flying into space as a rocket. Escaping our planet's gravitational pull is difficult – gravity isn't just strong, it's strong extends removed from Earth.

Like a balloon

As a rocket scientistOne of the things I teach students is how rockets overcome gravity. This is how it really works:

Essentially, the rocket must generate thrust – that’s, generate force burning propellant to supply hot gases. It then shoots these hot gases out of a nozzle. It's like blowing up a balloon, releasing it, and watching it fly away because the air rushes out.

More specifically, the rocket fuel consists of each fuel and oxidizer. The fuel is usually something flammable, often hydrogen, methane or kerosene. The oxidizer is frequently liquid oxygen, which reacts with the fuel and causes it to burn.

When flying into space and escaping from Earth, rockets require plenty of power, so that they use up fuel in a short time. That's an issue since the rocket can't carry enough fuel to maintain pushing endlessly; The amount of fuel required would make the rocket too heavy to get off the bottom.

So what happens while you run out of fuel? The thrust stops and gravity slows the rocket until it step by step falls back to Earth.

Luckily, scientists can launch the rocket with some sideways momentum in order that it misses Earth when it returns. You may even do that in order that it falls across the Earth repeatedly endlessly. In other words, it goes into orbitand begins to orbit the planet.

Many launches intentionally don’t leave Earth completely behind. Thousands of satellites are currently orbiting our planet. They make phones and TVs work, show weather patterns to meteorologists, and even can help you pay with a bank card on the food market or refill on the gas pump. Sometimes you possibly can see these satellites within the night sky, including the International Space Station.

Escape from the earth

Suppose the goal is to let the rocket escape Earth's gravity endlessly so it could actually fly into the depths of space. That's when scientists do it a neat trick called staging. They launch with a big rocket after which, once in space, throw it away to make use of a smaller rocket. This allows the journey to proceed without the load of the larger rocket and requires less fuel.

But even the staging shouldn’t be enough; At some point the rocket will run out of fuel. But if the rocket goes fast enough, it could actually run out of fuel and still roll away from Earth endlessly without gravity pulling it back. It's like riding a motorcycle: construct up enough speed and eventually you'll have the opportunity to roll up a hill without having to pedal.

And just as there’s a minimum speed required to coast the bike, there’s also a minimum speed required for a rocket to coast into space: 25,020 miles per hour (approx. 40,000 kilometers per hour).

Scientists call this speed the escape velocity. A rocket must fly so fast that the momentum pushing it away from Earth is stronger than the force of gravity pulling it back. If you decelerate, you’ll enter Earth orbit.

Escape from Jupiter

Larger or more massive objects have a stronger gravitational pull. A rocket launching from a planet larger than Earth would have to realize the next escape velocity.

A rocket leaving Jupiter would require an unlimited amount of fuel.

Jupiter, for instance, is probably the most massive planet in our solar system. It is so big that it could swallow 1,000 Earths. Therefore, a really high escape velocity is required: 133,100 miles per hour (about 214,000 kilometers per hour), greater than five times the escape velocity of Earth.

But the acute example is a black holean object so massive that its escape velocity is exceptionally high. So high, actually, that even light – which travels at 370 million miles per hour (about 600 million kilometers per hour) – shouldn’t be fast enough to flee. That's why it's called a black hole.

At his home in Oakland, inside earshot of the Coliseum sports arena and BART routes, Michale Jones said he typically sleeps just five hours each night. Added to the periodic clatter of local trains and the roar of sports fans is the intrusion of criminal activity that keeps him awake.

“I always hear a lot of gunshots, a lot of music, sideshows and a lot of other things like that at night and even every day at midnight,” Jones said.

Jones might feel some relief on Sunday, when daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. in most U.S. states and clocks move back an hour to straightforward time, allowing an extra 60 minutes to sleep in.

But it will not be much of a break for Jones and his neighbors, whose ZIP code had the best rate of “short sleep duration” within the Bay Area at 41.2%, in accordance with the most recent study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2024 PLACES: Local Data for Better Health Report..

More than one in three American adults report not getting the advisable amount of sleep, which is at the very least seven hours an evening, in accordance with the CDC. Anne Wheaton, deputy associate director for science on the CDC's Division of Population Health, said the national average is 37%, while in California it’s 35%. Experts say the explanations can range from long commutes to health issues and noisy neighborhoods.

“Environmental noise may play a role in short sleep duration,” said Clete Kushida, a neurologist and professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University and director of the Stanford Center for Human Sleep Research.

Jennifer Martin, Professor of Medicine on the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and former CEO of the American Academy of Sleep Medicinesaid, “California ranks pretty high” amongst states “in terms of residents not getting enough sleep.”

“California is not the best-sleeping state in the United States, and there are many people in California who don’t get enough sleep,” Martin said.

Jones' 94621 ZIP code includes the Oakland International Airport, the Coliseum and adjoining arena, and the Coliseum BART station. Other Bay Area ZIP codes with what Wheaton said were “statistically similar” insomnia levels were in other parts of Oakland, San Francisco, Richmond, Pittsburg, Antioch and San Quentin, in accordance with the information.

So where do Bay Area residents get a very good rest? The data shows that the Portola Valley ZIP code in San Mateo County, home to wealthy investors like Vinod Khosla and future Sunset magazine publisher Bill Lane, has the bottom percentage of residents with one, at just 23.2% report short sleep duration.

Fiona Barwick, a clinical associate professor within the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University, said wealthier communities like Portola Valley may be quieter and more restful.

“You don’t hear any gunshots at night. So you have a very safe and stable environment to sleep in, not just in your community, but even in your household,” Barwick said. “If you live in an unsafe, insecure and unstable environment with fewer resources, not just in your own household but in the larger community, you can't afford adequate policing or traffic lights, and then it's probably even worse .”

Wheaton said lack of sleep may be brought on by a wide range of sleep disorders, reminiscent of insomnia, in addition to poor sleep habits, including irregular sleep schedules and using electronic devices near bedtime. Martin added that one consider why many within the Bay Area don't get enough sleep is commute times to work.

“People tend to live in areas that are not particularly close to their workplace, and they often sacrifice sleep for their morning commute,” Martin said.

Jones, who has lived all his life within the Bay Area's sleepiest zip code, has many neighbors who share his distress concerning the nighttime noise.

Angel Martinez, 35, who has lived on this Oakland neighborhood along with her family all her life, said she typically sleeps six hours at night. Martinez said she will at all times hear the BART station and the planes, even though it doesn't wake her up an excessive amount of at night.

“Everyone who lives here sleeps just OK, not the best,” she said. “Unfortunately, everyone, even me, is only used to the noise when you sleep at night.”

Whether the time change on Sunday will bring somewhat relief is controversial.

Nearly 60% of California voters approved a ballot measure in 2018 that permits the state legislature to vary daylight saving time with a two-thirds majority if the changes are consistent with federal law. So if a big majority of lawmakers agree, the state could either eliminate daylight saving time or, with help from Congress, extend it year-round.

Other states have taken similar measures, including Florida, where Republican Sen. Marco Rubio has repeatedly introduced the Sunshine Protection Act to increase daylight saving time year-round. However, as of October it remained parked in committee.

But while sleep experts like the thought of getting rid of the time change, they're generally in favor of keeping standard time.

“The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and all medical and scientific organizations that have spoken out on this issue believe that we should end daylight saving time and stick to standard time permanently,” Martin said. “It suits people better if we have winter time than summer time.”

However, outdoor enthusiasts and youth sports advocates have advocated for daylight saving time since it allows spring and fall teams to compete within the afternoon after school ends before it gets dark.

Kushida isn't convinced that the additional hour of sleep after daylight saving time ends will provide much relief.

“Individuals whose sleep-wake cycles are strongly linked to the circadian cycles of day and night may have difficulty adapting to daylight saving time,” Kushida said.

Jones said: “It's good to sleep an hour longer, but I definitely need a week to adjust to the time change.”

Residents of the Bay Area's sleepiest neighborhood are searching for other solutions for a peaceful rest.

“Just more housing and police patrols,” Jones said.

Located in New Windsor, NY, an hour's drive from the George Washington Bridge, the Storm King Art Center is considered one of the most important and most famed outdoor sculpture parks within the country. It features over 150 works by artists spread across 500 lush fields and forests within the Hudson Valley, and the season's fall foliage reaches its peak this weekend, making it an important time to go to. Artists resembling Alexander Calder and Maya Lin have brought him international recognition. Founded in 1960 by Ralph E. Ogden and H. Peter Stern, co-owners of the Star Expansion Company, it was initially a Hudson River School painting museum before expanding its scope to incorporate outdoor sculpture. It has successfully combined art and its natural surroundings to showcase the great thing about Orange County. Parts of the location originally served as a gravel quarry that supported the development of the New York Thruway.

The Massachusetts Senate passed an amendment Thursday that might bring joyful hour to Massachusetts residents for the primary time in 4 many years.

State Senator Julian Cyr proposed the change in a broader Economic Development Act price $2.8 billionAn analogous amendment passed in 2022, and Cyr renewed his efforts to legalize the practice of discounted beverage sales with a bill last yr.

“It is really critical that we consider the significant economic boost for the nearly 19,000 restaurants and cafes in this Commonwealth that provide food, employment and a sense of community across the state,” Cyr told lawmakers on Thursday.

The change allows establishments to sell alcohol at a reduced price provided prices don’t change through the discount period, the discount is announced at the very least three days before the period and takes place before 10 p.m.

Massachusetts forbidden Happy Hour in 1984 to crack down on drunk driving. Since then, states like Kansas and Illinois have repealed similar bans and haven’t seen a rise in drunk driving-related cases, Cyr said.

“The health data shows that we are moving in the right direction. This could be an impetus to bring people back to our downtown areas and main streets,” Cyr said.

The amendment would allow cities and towns to set their very own joyful hour regulations that might apply only to certain parts of town. Cyr, who represents municipalities on the Cape and Islands, said some dry cities would abstain, while coastal communities should want to benefit from their seasonal economy.

Lawmakers discussed the bill and its amendments late into the night, although reported It was likely that it might pass. The bill would then land on the desk of Governor Maura Healey.

Cyr, nonetheless, said joyful hour wouldn’t only boost the economy. He said Massachusetts could use some “fun.” Lawmakers are already working to issue a whole lot of liquor licenses to neighborhoods like Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, East Boston, Roslindale, West Roxbury and Hyde Park, which have significantly fewer businesses with liquor licenses than neighborhoods like Back Bay or Seaport.

“I've heard that it's difficult for creatives and entrepreneurs to have fun here,” Cyr said. “There are a lot of rules, requirements and regulations. The entry fees are very high and I think we still need to work a bit on our fun factor.”

If you might have $600 million in your pocket and consistently have trouble budgeting, how do you solve your money problems?

If you're Gov. Maura Healey's latest transportation task force, hire a team of consultants who charge as much as $610 an hour.

Looking at a Budget gap of $628 million For the following fiscal 12 months, the MBTA signed a $450,000 contract in April with consulting firm Ernst & Young to check how transportation is and could possibly be funded in Massachusetts and the way other states and countries are doing so.

The hourly rate for the nine consultants ranges from $244 to $610.

The contract is considered one of the primary initiatives overseen by a brand new task force created by Healey to handle among the state's long-standing transportation problems. Consultants will prepare the Task Force's final report on sustainable financing for transportation in Massachusetts by December. According to the contract.

But some Task force members expressed concerns in regards to the reliance on expensive consultants, whose firms are sometimes hired by state agencies to do all types of presidency work.

“The last thing Massachusetts needs is another consultant-generated report,” said Brian Kane, who serves as executive director of the MBTA Advisory Board. “What we need is political action.”

State transportation agency MassDOT spokeswoman Amelia Aubourg said the brand new contract is an addition to an existing contract the consulting firm entered into with the MBTA and that MassDOT will reimburse the T.

“We value thought leadership and wanted to examine what is happening in the national landscape when it comes to transportation funding,” Aubourg said in an announcement. “It helps to have these economists who have analyzed the industry and have access to provide the full spectrum of what is possible now and in the future.”

Ernst & Young didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment.

Much of the research into the issues and solutions of federal transportation financing that Ernst & Young consultants were hired to conduct has already been conducted by government agencies And outside Organizations in recent times. MBTA officials have also provided the agency's board with details about what other states are doing.

Healey founded the Transportation Financing Task Force in January when she released them Budget proposal for the fiscal 12 months starting in Julywhich provides $172 million to shut the T's estimated $628 million budget gap. The task force, Healey said, is predicted to submit recommendations to her by the tip of the 12 months for a statewide “long-term, sustainable transportation financing plan.”

Healey announced the duty force's 31 appointments in February, a few of whom are members of her government. The chair is Transport Minister Monica Tibbits-Nutt and the deputy chair is Administration and Finance Minister Matthew Gorzkowicz.

The MBTA pays Ernst & Young's senior managing director, Jon Godsmark and two other senior executives, Tom Rousakis and Andrew Phillips, were paid $610 an hour for his or her services. LinkedIn profiles of the advisers show that Godsmark and Phillips are based in Washington DC and Rousakis is predicated in New York.

For a task force meeting this month, consultants were tasked with preparing a “presentation of an analysis of current public transportation funding sources, projections of future revenues and key drivers,” in response to a duplicate of the contract. Next month, consultants are expected to organize a “presentation summarizing international and U.S. peer analysis to identify a number of potential new transportation funding sources.” In July and August they are going to present possible sources of revenue and the “potential economic and social impact” of those sources.

By October, consultants will draft a “technical report for review by task force members” after which submit a final report for review by task force members in the primary week of December, in response to the contract.

The contract requires consultants to satisfy weekly with MassDOT, Administration & Finance and the MBTA.

A Globe report earlier this 12 months found that Minnesota and New York Passed latest taxes to balance the operating budgets of its largest transit agencies for years to come back.

Last month, Healey told a business group that she “no plans to propose new taxes or increase existing ones” and destroying an idea popularized by Tibbits-Nutt to levy customs duties at state borders.

Some task members expressed frustration at the choice to have interaction the consultants without jointly determining what the scope of the contract ought to be. Members said they’d not seen the contract.

Member of the duty force Amie Shei, executive director of the Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts, said there may be “no transparency” about what consultants are focused on.

“More transparency about what consultants are working on would be helpful so we don’t duplicate work,” she said. “For someone serving Central Massachusetts, I want to know that regional equity is a consideration and that consultants don’t just focus on the MBTA.”

Kane, of the MBTA advisory committee, said he doubts MassDOT will reimburse the MBTA for the contract, citing the proven fact that the department still hasn't reimbursed the T for $7 million in transportation mitigation costs in the course of the 12 months Closure of the Sumner Tunnel last 12 months. MassDOT's Aubourg said the MBTA shall be reimbursed once the consultants' work is complete.

“I can’t believe we’re doing this again,” he said of the research. The advisory board has prepared Dozens of reports about MBTA funds.

Task force member Jim Rooney, CEO of the Boston Chamber of Commerce and former general manager of the T, said he believes the duty force needs outside help and praised Ernst & Young's qualifications, saying it was useful having latest eyes is the issue.

However, the duty force's end product will likely look less like a path forward and more like a “menu of possible solutions.”

“I don’t think we can definitively say, here’s the plan,” Rooney said.

Why is Philly's minimum wage so low?

The biggest factor is that Philadelphia doesn’t have the authority to set its own minimum wage – one that would fairly reflect town’s cost of living. In Pennsylvania, local governments should not allowed to boost the minimum wage above the state level of $7.25 an hour. For an adult working full-time, that's $15,080 per 12 months.

In June 2023, the Democratic-controlled Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed a bill But a plan to progressively increase the minimum wage nationwide to $15 an hour by 2026 failed within the Republican-controlled Senate.

While that could be enough to get by in rural Pennsylvania, it just doesn't work in a big metropolitan area. The MIT Living Wage Calculator estimates that a single person in Philly without children needs about $24 per hour to support yourself. Add two children and the number greater than doubles.

The Philadelphia City Council has called on the state parliament Harrisburg desires to introduce and pass a bill that will allow town to set its own minimum wage, but to this point Harrisburg has not budged.

How many Philadelphians make minimum wage? What form of jobs are these?

As of 2018, about 9% of employed Philadelphia residents age 16 or older earned $7.25 per hour or less. That corresponds to around 44,000 people. Contrary to popular belief, these should not predominantly teenagers getting their first job. Actually, it's in Philadelphia only 7% of employees earning the minimum wage are teenagers. Over half are between 25 and 54 years old.

How could anyone earn lower than the minimum? It might be because they The employer will not be complying with the lawor it is expounded to the industry by which they work. For example, jobs within the catering and hospitality industry have much lower minimum wage requirements – $2.13 per hour federal and $2.83 per hour in Pennsylvania – since suggestions make up a good portion of their salary. Exploitation of employees who face obstacles to traditional employment because they are undocumented or were locked upalso occurs steadily.

Over and beyond, almost 40% of town's workforce makes $15 per hour or less. Raising the minimum wage would profit a good portion of Philadelphia's workforce because if the minimum wage is repealed, In general, wages are likely to rise.

Philadelphians who make minimum wage or less are likely to do that employed in 4 sectors: Hotel and catering services, retail, health and social assistance and academic services. The most typical jobs are cashiers, nursing assistants, and most restaurant jobs, similar to cooks and waiters.

These employees are disproportionately non-white or Hispanic, young, and with no college degree. Geographically, they’re most concentrated within the north, northeast, and southwest of Philadelphia – Traditionally lower income areas.

Who does this hurt essentially the most?

It hurts those that haven’t any alternative but to just accept such paltry wages. In 2018 nearly 4 in 10 Pennsylvanians had trouble paying the essential costs. Many families are stuck within the cycle of poverty, even when the adults work full time. This was the results of a study from 2020 about 70% of employees In the United States, those that receive Medicaid and SNAP support work full time, including for giant corporations similar to McDonald's and Walmart.

A low minimum wage for Philadelphians also reduces town's revenue from payroll taxes. This limits the resources available to town to speculate in infrastructure, clean streets, parks and other public spaces and services.

Higher minimum wages can also be possible Improving health outcomes and reducing crime and recidivism rates.

Who advantages essentially the most?

In theory, entrepreneurs profit from a low minimum wage. It is sensible, right? The fewer staff they should pay, the extra money stays of their coffers. But that's a short-sighted stance that ignores the larger financial impact that a low minimum wage brings: most notably, the high cost of worker turnover.

Recent studies have shown that the typical cost of sales is 40% of the annual salary of a position. This amount covers all the things from increased additional time wages to the prices of recruiting and training recent employees. The longer a job stays open, the costlier it becomes.

Beyond the financial impact, high turnover rates also create environments where good employees leave the corporate, excellent customer support falters, and the corporate as an entire weakens.

So who really advantages from a minimum wage? I’d argue that nobody is.

What wouldn’t it take for Philly to boost its minimum wage?

In 2019, the Philadelphia City Council agreed to pay at the least all city employees and contractors $15 per hour. To extend this to all employees, Philly would have to be given the ability to create change by itself and never be certain by Harrisburg's minimum wage decision.

It is abundantly clear that the general public desire is there. Reply for a non-binding answer Election query in 2019Philadelphia voters overwhelmingly supported a $15 an hour minimum wage. That's how other cities prefer it Washington And Tacoma, Washington, which eventually passed an increased minimum wage, began their efforts. However, Philadelphia employees, advocates and coalitions have yet to effectively advocate on this issue.

If the local business community mobilized, it will likely push state policymakers to act. The Philadelphia Department of Commerce was a vocal supporter so far.

Another potential boon is Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's recent budget address in February 2024, whose Charge $15 an hour received a standing ovation. Yet despite the applause, there continues to be resistance from Senate members who say this can be the case hurts small business owners. This was consistently the case debunked by economists and researchers. State Democrats also say they’re willing to achieve this Create tax credits for small businesses to alleviate the stress this may increasingly cause.
