WASHINGTON – Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi underwent hip surgery at a U.S. military hospital in Germany on Saturday after she fell at an event in Luxembourg with other members of Congress.

Pelosi, 84, “is on the mend,” Ian Krager, a spokesman for the California Democrats, said in an announcement.

Pelosi thanked the staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the hospital in Luxembourg, where she was treated, for “their excellent care and kindness.”

She was in Europe with a bipartisan congressional delegation to mark the eightieth anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.

Pelosi tripped and fell during an event and broke her hip, in keeping with people aware of her injury who weren’t authorized to debate the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Among those on the trip was Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, who posted on social media Friday that he was “praying for a speedy recovery” for Pelosi. The two lawmakers were captured holding hands in a bunch photo on the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg that day.

Pelosi was first elected in 1987. She served as speaker twice, resigning from the leadership post two years ago, but remained in Congress and was re-elected to represent her San Francisco district in November.

Celtics

Celtics guard Jaylen Brown returned to motion Sunday night against the Bucks after missing 4 games with ongoing hip flexor issues.

He scored 14 points in 37 minutes on 4-for-13 shooting. Although it wasn't his strongest shooting performance, Brown said he felt improvement.

“It felt better today. Felt better physically,” Brown said. “Not quite there yet, but I was able to use my weight and explode a little better. So, I'm feeling better today. We're getting there. It's a long journey, it's a long season. It’s important to take care of your body.”

Brown said he realized he felt healthy enough to play the night before Sunday's contest.

In general, Brown has been durable throughout his profession. Before last 12 months's championship run, he played 70 regular-season games, essentially the most he has played since 2019.

He had two consecutive seasons in 2020 and 2021 where he was limited to 57 and 58 games, respectively, but in every other season of his nine-year profession he played in 66 or more games.

Brown said he knew prematurely that he desired to take some time to play against Milwaukee, with whom the Celtics have had several playoff matchups lately.

“I try not to miss too many games. “My presence for my team on both offense and defense is important,” Brown said. “This is a big away win that we needed, so I knew I wanted to make myself available today and I knew it would be a challenge physically on both sides.”

“We got their best shot tonight,” he added. “They came out, Giannis had an incredible game. Their teammates shot the ball well and we still figured out how to win. So I am convinced that this was my return game.”

Brown said he doesn't know exactly when his hip flexor was damaged.

“It’s been on my mind since training camp,” Brown said. “I played through it and it didn't really get any better as I played, so we decided it would be best to get some rest and call it a day. I think that did me good because today I felt that burst a little more. I felt a little stronger physically and able to go both ways than I had felt the last few days, so that's something to build on.”

LOS ANGELES — Martin Mull, who became a hip sensation within the Seventies together with his droll, esoteric comedy and acting and later was a well-liked guest star on sitcoms comparable to “Roseanne” and “Arrested Development,” has died, his daughter said Friday.

Mull's daughter, television author and comic artist Maggie Mull, said her father died at home on Thursday after “a brave battle with a long illness”.

Mull, who was also a guitarist and painter, rose to national fame through a recurring role on the Norman Lear-created satirical soap opera “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” and the lead role in its spin-off “Fernwood Tonight,” by which he played Barth Gimble, the host of a satirical talk show.

“He was known for excelling in every creative discipline imaginable, including his Red Roof Inn commercials,” Maggie Mull said in an Instagram post. “He thought that joke was funny. It was always funny. My dad will be sorely missed by his wife and daughter, by his friends and colleagues, by fellow artists, comedians and musicians, and – the mark of a truly extraordinary person – by many, many dogs.”

Known for his blond hair and neat mustache, Mull was born in Chicago, grew up in Ohio and Connecticut, and studied art in Rhode Island and Rome. In the Seventies, he combined his music and comedy in trendy Hollywood clubs.

“In 1976, I was a guitarist and comedian performing at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip when Norman Lear came in and heard me,” Mull told the Associated Press in 1980. “He cast me as a wife beater in 'Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.' Four months later, I got my own show.”

In the Eighties, he appeared in movies comparable to “Mr. Mom” and “Clue,” and within the Nineties he had a recurring role on “Roseanne.”

He later played private investigator Gene Parmesan in “Arrested Development” and was nominated for an Emmy in 2016 for a guest appearance on “Veep.”

Other comedians and actors were often his biggest fans.

“Martin was the greatest,” said Bridesmaids director Paul Feig in an X-post. “So funny, so talented, such a nice guy. I was lucky enough to star with him on The Jackie Thomas Show and enjoyed every moment with a legend. Fernwood Tonight had such an impact on my life.”
