<p>When we first pointed our microscope on the soil sample, bits of organic material appeared: a tiny poppy seed, the compound eye of an insect, broken willow twigs, and spores of moss. Our field of view was dominated by dark-colored spheres produced by soil fungi. </p>
<p>These were clearly the <a href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2407465121">Remains of an Arctic tundra ecosystem</a> – and proof that every one of Greenland’s ice disappeared before previously thought. </p>
<p>These tiny hints of past life got here from a impossible place – a handful of soil buried under 3 kilometers of ice beneath the summit of the Greenland ice sheet. Predictions concerning the future melting of the ice sheet are clear: When the ice on the summit is gone, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/nature20146">a minimum of 90%</a> of the Greenland ice can have melted. </p>

<p>In 1993, drillers on the summit accomplished the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) ice core, nicknamed <a href="https://press.princeton.edu/books/paperback/9780691160832/the-two-mile-time-machine">Two-mile time machine</a>The seeds, twigs and spores we found got here from just a few centimeters of soil at the underside of this core – soil that had been untouched and dry for 3 many years in a windowless <a href="https://icecores.org">Storage facility in Colorado</a>.</p>
<p>Our latest evaluation builds on the work of others over the past decade <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/540202a">undermine faith</a> that Greenland&#39;s ice sheet had been constantly present for a minimum of 2.6 million years, when the Pleistocene ice ages began. In 2016, scientists measuring rare isotopes in rocks above and below the GISP2 soil sample used models that suggested the ice had disappeared a minimum of once. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/nature20146">throughout the last 1.1 million years</a>. </p>
<p>By discovering well-preserved tundra remnants, we were now able to substantiate that the Greenland ice sheet had indeed melted earlier and exposed the land below the summit for long enough. <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1249047">in order that soil forms</a> and that tundra is growing there. This shows us that the ice cover is fragile and will melt again.</p>

<h2>A landscape with arctic poppies and spike moss</h2>
<p>To the naked eye, the tiny bits of past life are unremarkable &#8211; dark specks floating amongst shiny grains of mud and sand. But under the microscope, the story they tell is astonishing. Together, the seeds, megaspores and bug parts paint an image of a chilly, dry and rocky environment that existed sometime within the last million years.</p>
<p>Above ground, arctic poppies grew among the many rocks. Each stem of this small but tough herb had a single cup-shaped flower on it, following the sun across the sky to benefit from the daylight.</p>

<p>In the rocky soil were dark balls called sclerotia, produced by fungi that team up with the roots of plants within the soil to assist each get the nutrients they need. Nearby, willow bushes have adapted to life in the cruel tundra with their small size and the downy hairs that cover their stems. </p>

<p>Each of those creatures left traces on this handful of soil – evidence that tells us that Greenland’s ice was once replaced by a resilient tundra ecosystem.</p>
<h2>Greenland’s ice is fragile</h2>
<p>Our discoveries, published on August 5, 2024, in <a href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2407465121">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>show that Greenland&#39;s ice melts easily at lower atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations than today. Concerns about this threat have prompted scientists to review the ice sheet. <a href="https://wwnorton.com/books/9781324020677">for the reason that Nineteen Fifties</a>. </p>
<p>In the Nineteen Sixties, a team of engineers took the world’s first deep ice core at <a href="https://blogs.egu.eu/divisions/cr/2022/01/28/camp-century-bottom-ice/">Camp Century</a>a nuclear-powered army base built into the ice sheet, over 100 miles from the northwest coast of Greenland. They studied the ice, but that they had little use for the rocks and soil they delivered to the surface with the underside of the core. These were stored after which lost until they were discovered in 2019. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/science.366.6465.556">rediscovered in a laboratory freezer</a>. Our team was among the many scientists called upon to conduct the evaluation. </p>

<p>In the soil of Camp Century we also found plant and bug stays that were frozen under the ice. With rare isotopes and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpZVa7O863A">Luminescence techniques</a>we were able thus far them to a time about 400,000 years ago, when temperatures were much like those of today. </p>

<p>Another ice core, DYE-3 from southern Greenland, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/science.1141758">contained DNA</a> This shows that this a part of the island was covered with spruce forests sooner or later within the last million years.</p>
<p>The biological evidence is compelling evidence of the fragility of the Greenland ice sheet. Taken together, the outcomes from three ice cores can only mean one thing: excluding just a few mountainous regions within the east, ice should have melted on your complete island over the past million years. </p>
<h2>The lack of ice cover</h2>
<p>If the Greenland ice disappears, the geography of the world will change – and that may be a problem for humanity. </p>
<p>As the ice sheet melts, sea levels will eventually rise by greater than 7 meters, and <a href="https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2017/11/world/greenland-global-warning/">Coastal cities are flooded</a>Most of Miami will likely be underwater, as will large parts of Boston, New York, Mumbai and Jakarta. </p>

<p>Today, sea levels are rising by <a href="https://sealevel.nasa.gov/faq/8/is-the-rate-of-sea-level-rise-increasing/">multiple inch per decade</a>and in some places even several times faster. By 2100, when today&#39;s children are grandparents, sea levels worldwide will probably be several meters higher.</p>
<h2>Using the past to grasp the longer term</h2>
<p>Rapid ice loss is changing the Arctic. Data on past ecosystems, like those we&#8217;ve got collected beneath the Greenland ice, are helping scientists understand how the Arctic ecology will change because the climate warms.</p>
<p>As temperatures rise, sensible white snow melts and ice shrinks, exposing dark rock and soil that absorbs the sun&#39;s warmth. The Arctic is <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/missions/landsat/warming-temperatures-are-driving-arctic-greening/">turn out to be greener</a> With each passing 12 months, the underlying permafrost thaws and more carbon is released, causing the planet to warm further.</p>

<p>Human-induced climate change is anticipated to warm the Arctic and Greenland to temperatures not seen there for tens of millions of years. <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/sixth-assessment-report-cycle/">To save Greenland’s ice</a>Studies show that the world must stop greenhouse gas emissions from its energy systems and <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/293190702_Consequences_of_Twenty-First-Century_Policy_for_Multi-Millennial_Climate_and_Sea-Level_Change">Reduce carbon dioxide levels</a> within the atmosphere.</p>
<p>To assess future risks to the ice sheet and coastal communities worldwide, it&#8217;s critical to grasp the environmental conditions that led to the last ice sheet disappearance and the way life in Greenland responded.</p>

<p>This is how the primary segment “Lesbian Health” begins on “<a href="https://findingaids.smith.edu/repositories/2/resources/894">Dyke TV</a>”, a lesbian-feminist television series that aired on New York’s public broadcasters from 1993 to 2006.</p>
<p>The half-hour program focused on lesbian activism, social issues, arts and film, news, health, sports and culture. Created by three artists and activists &#8211; Cuban playwright Ana Simo, theater director and producer Linda Chapman and independent filmmaker Mary Patierno &#8211; Dyke TV was one among the primary television shows by and for LGBTQ women.</p>
<p>Many people think that LGBTQ+ representation on television only began within the Nineteen Nineties in shows like “<a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108761/">Ellen</a>&#8221; And &#8220;<a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0157246/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk">Will and Grace</a>”, LGBTQ+ people had already produced their very own television programs <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yNJE_0DOWP-5DD3mtX3u4uo1oZaIxW33tVNze2lbclk/edit?usp=sharing">on local channels within the US and Canada</a> for a long time.</p>
<p>Actually <a href="https://arch.library.northwestern.edu/concern/generic_works/fj236245z">My research has shown</a> Hundreds of publicly accessible LGBTQ+ series produced across the country. </p>
<p>In a media environment that has historically been hostile to LGBTQ+ people and issues, LGBTQ+ people created their very own local programs to shine a highlight on their lives, communities and issues. </p>
<h2>Experimentation and advocacy</h2>
<p>In this special health segment on “Dyke TV,” a lady undergoes a cervical examination on camera using a mirror, a flashlight and <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/drugs/24238-speculum#">a mirror</a>. </p>
<p>Close-ups of this woman&#39;s genitals reveal her vulva, vagina and cervix as she narrates the examination in a matter-of-fact tone and explains how viewers can use these instruments themselves to ascertain for vaginal abnormalities. &#8220;Dyke TV&#8221; recalls the ethos of the Seventies women&#39;s health movement and instructs viewers to empower themselves in a world where women&#39;s health care is marginalized. </p>
<p>Because there was little regulation of public television in New York, the show&#39;s hosts were capable of speak openly about sexual health and broadcast segments that might otherwise have been censored on the printed networks.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/contrapoints">How today’s LGBTQ content creators</a>Many producers of publicly accessible LGBTQ+ series have experimented with genre, form and content in entertaining and imaginative ways. </p>
<p>LGBTQ+ actors, entertainers, activists and artists – <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Alternate-Channels-Images-20th-Century-revised/dp/0997825499/ref=sr_1_2">who often experienced discrimination and symbolic politics within the mainstream media</a> – appeared in these series to advertise and discuss their work. The iconic drag queen <a href="https://scholarblogs.emory.edu/marbl/2023/08/21/the-american-music-show-atlanta-public-access-television-lgbtq-communities/">RuPaul began his public appearances in Atlanta</a>where “The American Music Show” gave him a platform to advertise his burgeoning drag persona within the mid-Eighties.</p>

<p>The producers often viewed their series as a combination of entertainment, art and media activism. </p>
<p>Shows like “<a href="https://gaycenter.org/archive-collection/the-gay-dating-game-show-records/">The Gay Dating Game</a>&#8221; And &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw6ZNWajUgs">Be my guest</a>“ were ironic satires about game shows from the 1950s. News programs like “<a href="https://findingaids.library.nyu.edu/fales/mss_231/contents/aspace_ref75/">Gay USA</a>,” which first aired in 1985, covered local and national LGBTQ news and health issues. </p>
<p>Variety shows like “<a href="https://www.logotv.com/news/am8m6i/the-worlds-first-gay-tv-program-the-emerald-city">The Emerald City</a>&#8221; in the 1970s, &#8220;<a href="http://gaycenter.prattsi.org/s/av/page/gma">Gay Morning America</a>“ in the 1980s and “<a href="https://findingaids.library.nyu.edu/fales/mss_231/contents/aspace_ref1772/">Candied Camera</a>In the 1990s, interviews, musical performances, comedy sketches and news broadcasts were combined. In soap operas such as “<a href="https://findingaids.library.nyu.edu/fales/mss_231/contents/aspace_9a51b4dd94c1f528f31d37c1e786e9d7/">Secret passions</a>”, featured gay amateur actors. And street interview programs like “<a href="https://www.vdb.org/titles/out-and-outrageous-bus-ride">The Glennda and Brenda Show</a>“ used drag and street theater to stimulate discussion about LGBTQ issues.</p>
<p>Other programs contained more revealing content.</p>
<p>In the Eighties and Nineteen Nineties, “<a href="https://findingaids.library.nyu.edu/fales/mss_231/contents/aspace_ref106/">Men &#038; Movies</a>”, “<a href="https://findingaids.library.columbia.edu/ead/nnc-rb/ldpd_12475155">The Closet Case Show</a>&#8221; And &#8220;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1996/06/23/style/cable-s-first-lady-of-explicit.html">“Men for Men” by Robin Byrd</a>“ contained interviews with porn stars, clips from porn videos and photographs of sex in nightclubs and at parties.</p>

<h2>Bypassing censorship</h2>
<p>The regulation of sex on cable television has long been <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/43653620">a political and cultural focus</a>.</p>
<p>But legal loopholes inadvertently allowed sexual content to be made publicly available, allowing hosts and guests on these shows to talk openly about gay sex and safer sex practices &#8211; and even exhibit them on camera. </p>
<p>The impetus for public television was much like the ethos of public broadcasting, which aimed to create non-commercial and academic television programs. <a href="https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/public-access-television-9780275964887/">within the service of the general public interest</a>.</p>
<p>In 1972 <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Blue_Skies.html?id=NIFS_EqkOvYC">The Federal Communications Commission issued an order</a> Cable television systems within the nation&#39;s 100 largest markets must offer access channels for public use. The FCC has ordered cable corporations to allocate airtime, equipment and studio space to individuals and community groups to make use of their very own programming on a first-come, first-served basis.</p>

<p>The FCC&#39;s regulatory authority doesn&#8217;t extend to editorial control over publicly available content. For this reason, repeated attempts have been made to ban programs across the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1976/05/14/archives/manhattan-cable-bars-obscenity.html">Seventies</a>, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1984/03/05/arts/channel-j-pornography-is-cause-of-lockout-law.html">Eighties</a> And <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1995/09/16/nyregion/court-will-weigh-plan-to-scramble-cable-sex-shows.html">Nineteen Nineties</a> was <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1995/09/19/nyregion/2-stars-of-explicit-cable-shows-plead-for-free-speech-protection.html">questioned by cable producers and civil rights organizations</a>. </p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2000/05/23/us/supreme-court-roundup-court-overrules-law-restricting-cable-sex-shows.html">The Supreme Court has repeatedly overturned laws</a> who try and censor cable access programs by citing the First Amendment. <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/media/public-educational-and-governmental-access-channels-peg-channels">A cable network operator can refuse to broadcast a program</a> that accommodates “obscenity,” but what constitutes obscenity is a matter of interpretation. </p>
<p>Over the years, producers of LGBTQ-themed shows have vehemently defended their programs against calls for censorship, and the law has at all times been on their side.</p>
<h2>The AIDS crisis in focus</h2>
<p>As the AIDS crisis began to ravage LGBTQ+ communities within the Eighties, public television became increasingly vital.</p>
<p>Many of the series mentioned above devoted several sections and episodes to discussing the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS on their personal lives, relationships and communities. Series similar to “<a href="https://archives.nypl.org/mss/3622#detailed">Living with AIDS</a>”, “<a href="https://www.nyclgbtsites.org/site/homovisiones/">Homovisions</a>&#8221; And &#8220;<a href="https://archives.nypl.org/mss/3622#detailed">Experience it live!</a>” were specifically designed to teach and mobilize viewers about HIV/AIDS activism. With HIV/AIDS recipients <a href="https://www.dukeupress.edu/reframing-bodies">minimal coverage within the mainstream media</a> &#8211; and a <a href="https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374185138/lettherecordshow">Lack of political motion by local, state and national authorities</a> – these programs were among the many few places where LGBTQ+ people could learn in regards to the latest developments regarding the epidemic and efforts to combat it.</p>
<p>The long-standing program “<a href="https://gayusatv.org/">Gay USA</a>” is one among the few remaining LGBTQ+ public access series; latest episodes air each week locally in New York and nationally on Free Speech TV. While public access channels <a href="https://www.allcommunitymedia.org/">still exists in most cities within the country</a>Production has declined for the reason that advent of cheaper digital media technologies and streaming video services within the mid-2000s.  </p>
<p>And yet, on this media age – let’s call it “the heyday of public television” – these combative, experimental, sexual, kitschy and powerful series offered remarkable insights into the culture, history and activism of the LGBTQ+ movement.</p>
