The company's shares fell greater than 7% on Tuesday as analysts examined data on bone density loss from an early trial of the shot. An analyst said the extra data suggests a brand new potential safety risk related to the drug. But others said the stock move was an overreaction and that more data on a bigger patient population was needed.

In an announcement Wednesday, Amgen said: “The Phase 1 trial results do not indicate any bone safety concerns or change our belief in the promise of MariTide.” The drugmaker added that it looks forward to being the primary Phase 2 trial results for the treatment will probably be announced later this 12 months.

Shares of the corporate rose greater than 1% on Wednesday.

The drug is a promising potential competitor in the load loss drug market. It is designed to be taken monthly, relatively than once per week, as is the case with previous injections Novo Nordisk And Eli Lillyand promotes weight reduction in a different way.

Analysts on Tuesday cited additional publicly available data from a Phase 1 trial showing that the best dose of MariTide – 420 milligrams – was related to a loss in bone mineral density of about 4% over a 12-week period. A decrease in bone mineral density means the bones lose calcium and other minerals, making them weaker and increasing the likelihood of fracture.

In a research note, Cantor-Fitzgerald analyst Olivia Brayer called the information a “big unknown” and suggested it may very well be a possible risk related to drugs like MariTide, which work through so-called GIPR antagonism. Amgen's injection blocks a gut hormone receptor called GIP but additionally prompts one other appetite-stimulating hormone called GLP-1.

This is different than Eli Lilly's obesity drug Zepbound, which prompts GIP and GLP-1. Wegovy prompts GLP-1 but doesn’t goal GIP, which can even affect how the body breaks down sugar and fat.

“On the one hand, patients may naturally lose bone mineral density during weight loss treatment,” Brayer wrote.

But Brayer said, “On the other hand, this could be a failure because there appears to be a dose-dependent increase” in bone mineral density loss. This implies that the upper the dose patients take, the more bone mineral density they seem to lose.

Meanwhile, Jefferies analyst Michael Yee wrote in a note that the extra MariTide data appears to be “a non-issue.” Yee acknowledged that there was a decrease in bone density in individuals who took the best dose of the drug, but said, “The data is patchy.”

For example, he pointed to data on a lower dose of the drug that showed bone density actually increased by 1% before normalizing. Yee added that “changes” in bone mineral density are a known side effect of weight-loss medications in the primary one to a few months of use, as people lose significant weight quickly.

Amgen can be aware of the “hypothetical concern” about lack of bone mineral density, Yee said, citing the corporate's discussions with management.

“While we are of course not saying there is no impact, what we are saying is that we do not believe there is a significant problem.” [bone mineral density] “Overall, we don’t think there is a problem and the effect will normalize over time.”

BMO analyst Evan Seigerman wrote in a note Tuesday: “We would be cautious in making a comprehensive judgment about MariTide's safety profile based on this data.”

He added: “It would be easier for us to assess the safety profile on a larger cohort of patients.” There will not be a transparent answer until Amgen releases full Phase 2 trial data on the drug.

“This has not changed our opinion of MariTide and we consider the sale to be excessive,” Seigerman wrote.

It wasn't way back that the Federal Reserve, the central bank of the United States, feared that annual inflation would exceed 9% Mid-2022. Prices within the U.S. economy had not risen so quickly for the reason that Nineteen Eighties, and almost everyone feared that a series of rate of interest hikes would plunge the economy into recession.

What a difference two years could make.

Inflation cooled to 2.4% in September 2024, in response to consumer price index data released by the Labor Department on October 10. This is down from 2.5% the previous month and consistent with market expectations 2.3% to 2.4%. The inflation rate peaked at 8.9% in June 2022 – a 41-year high.

The news brings the Fed – and its Chairman Jerome Powell – significantly closer to its 2% inflation goal. It can be the fourth consecutive month by which year-on-year price changes were below 3% and the third consecutive month of declining inflation rates.

Speak as Economist and finance professorI feel this could possibly be a giant deal for the Federal Reserve, which meets in November – and will cut rates of interest again.

Fodder for one more rate of interest cut?

The Fed has what is named Dual mandate: It goals for each low inflation and stable employment, two goals that may sometimes be contradictory. Cutting rates of interest can boost employment but worsen inflation, while raising rates of interest can do the alternative.

Since inflation began to take off During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fed officials have stressed that their job is just not done until price increases return to the two percent goal.

But given recent jobs news, Powell and his colleagues have done so have modified their messages a bit. This suggests that the upside risks of inflation are lower than the risks related to a weakening labor market.

And in September the The Fed lowered the federal funds rate by 0.5 percentage points, or 50 basis points – the primary cut for the reason that rate hike began in March 2022. The move got here as unemployment had risen 4.3% in July, Job offers fell sharply and broader labor markets weakened.

Increasingly optimistic markets

The stock markets recovered in regards to the news of the rate of interest cut in September. Investors imagine a cut within the federal funds rate, a key rate of interest that dictates mortgage rates, auto loans, bank card rates and residential equity lines of credit, will spur a surge in investment and consumption and send the economy right into a so-called crisis soft landing as a substitute of a recession.

After that meeting, most members of the Federal Reserve Board indicated that they’d accomplish that also support rate of interest cuts by 25 basis points each Meetings in November and December.

Between today's inflation news and this unexpectedly sunny jobs report On October 4th, investors and markets have lots of news to digest as they consider where rates of interest will move in the approaching months. Many proceed to imagine that we may yet see it two cuts of 25 basis points by the tip of 2024 – and me too.

OAKLAND — An Oakland police officer called 911 last month to report that he had been dragged from his truck by an armed carjacker who pulled out a gun and drove off with the vehicle. But investigators don't imagine his version of events, in keeping with multiple law enforcement sources.

Officer Eduardo Arrizon reported his 2016 Chevy Silverado stolen just minutes after several witnesses saw the truck driving erratically and crashing into stationary objects. One of those witnesses identified Arrizon in a photograph as the driving force of the truck, who appeared and fled after the truck disregarded a stop sign and got here to a stop, authorities said.

Arrizon, 31, has not been arrested or charged in reference to the hit-and-run crash, however the investigation is ongoing. He has been placed on administrative leave, multiple law enforcement sources told this news organization. An attorney with the firm representing Arrizon declined to comment, and a message left on the officer's city email account went unanswered as of Friday afternoon.

The investigation began just a few minutes before 5 p.m. on Aug. 3, when several Oakland residents called police to report a tree blocking the roadway within the 1900 block of 69th Avenue. When police arrived, they found Arrizon's Chevy smoking and broken down next to a broken stop sign, authorities said.

Witnesses reported that the truck struck a parked automobile after which uprooted the tree and pulled it into one other parked vehicle. The Chevy continued down the road while the girl, who owned certainly one of the parked cars, angrily tried to follow it. With the tree blocking her path, the girl got out of her vehicle and tried to catch as much as the Chevy on foot. She then watched in horror because it struck a stop sign and got here to a stop, police said.

The driver of the Chevy was then seen exiting through the passenger door and running north on Church Street, authorities said. Arrizon's driver's license was reportedly found on the ground of the truck.

Four minutes after the crash, Arrizon called 911 to report he had been the victim of a carjacking, authorities said. He was reportedly driving the Chevy within the 2100 block of 69th Avenue when he encountered several men loitering next to a double-parked automobile blocking the road. When he honked to get them to maneuver, a person with a gun approached him, pointed the gun at him and told him to “run.” He abandoned the truck out of fear for his life, he reportedly told police.

Investigators couldn’t confirm Arrizon's version of events. They say residents' security cameras showed the Chevy traveling at a standard speed down the block and up 69th Avenue, where it will definitely ran a stop sign. Another resident reported that he didn’t notice a bunch of men loitering or a carjacking and was especially alert that day because his grandson had been playing within the front yard all afternoon.

Three witnesses received photo lineups showing Arrizon, police said. One of them reportedly identified him as the driving force of the Chevy, while two others couldn’t discover him.

Several witnesses provided an outline of the driving force that broadly matched Arrizon, including mentioning that he had “sleeve” tattoos on one arm. But Arrizon also provided an identical description of the automobile thief, authorities said.

Police didn’t reply to Arrizon's 911 call until 4 hours after he reported the automobile theft. When they did, they were unable to achieve him. He called again the subsequent day, in keeping with authorities, and said he fell asleep within the early evening of Aug. 3. In the following interview, he provided more details, claiming that after the automobile theft, he ran a brief distance to his house, jumped the backyard fence and made the 911 call, authorities said.

On Sept. 3, Arrizon voluntarily showed up at police for an additional interview. When he arrived, investigators showed him a signed court order authorizing them to take a DNA sample after which took a swab from his mouth, records show. They hope to match the DNA to existing samples found contained in the Chevy to verify or disprove the existence of a automobile thief.

Arrizon was accused of driving over 100 miles per hour while intoxicated in 2018. Alameda County prosecutors charged him with a felony, claiming his blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit on the time. The consequence of the case is unclear; local media never responded to it, and the case now not appears within the court's database.

Arrizon was a part of a notorious graduating class of the Police Academy in 2016, the 171st Academy for Basic Recruitswhose graduates have repeatedly made headlines for alleged criminal offenses.

One of them, former police officer Brian Bunton, was arrested in 2016 for obstruction of justice and prostitution in reference to the sex scandal involving woman Celeste Guap. Although he retired from the police force, his case was dismissed in court in September 2017.

The young police officer Matthew Santos was released during his probation period in 2016. allegedly threatened a person with a weapon paint his apartment door. Officer Trevor Stratton was sent on paid leave and named in a lawsuit filed by the family of an Alameda County probation officer who was allegedly attacked by one other drunken police officer in December 2015.

Another of the 171st, Samson Liu, was investigated earlier this yr after the Bureau of Cannabis Control raided a property in Antioch belonging to Liuwhere a big marijuana plantation was situated. Contra Costa prosecutors declined to prosecute Liu because there was no evidence, authorities said.

The Number of Americans living in povertyin response to the country's official definition, fell barely to about 36.8 million in 2023, the Census Bureau said on September 10, 2024. The data released also showed that the poverty rate declined barely, an alternate approach to measuring poverty, but increased as more people within the U.S. faced economic hardship.

The Conversation US asked Mark Rank, a Sociologist who studies poverty and economic inequalityto clarify the most recent numbers and share a few of his insights about poverty in America.

What are an important news?

I feel probably the most interesting aspect of this report is the several directions by which the 2 poverty measures developed in 2023. On the one hand, the official poverty measure fell from 11.5% in 2022 to 11.1% in 2023. At the identical time, supplementary poverty measurean alternate approach to measuring poverty introduced in 2011, rose from 12.4% last yr to 12.9% in 2023.

The official poverty rate fell because overall Household income rose barely in 2023 – even after accounting for inflation – in response to other census data. However, like many poverty experts, I imagine the supplemental poverty measure is a greater indicator of what is happening since it takes under consideration household expenditure in addition to tax credits and the impact of presidency programs on poverty reduction.

It seems that a significant reason the present supplemental poverty line is rising is because Social Security advantages and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – also often called SNAP or “food stamps” – lifted fewer people out of poverty in 2023 than in 2022.

The additional poverty measure also increased because of this of private contributions medical costs be higher in 2023 than in 2022.

Are there more meaningful ways to measure poverty in America?

The Annual report of the Census Bureau provides only a snapshot of poverty from yr to yr. I feel estimating the long-term risk of impoverishment over the lifetime of the typical American is a more meaningful approach.

For this purpose, I conducted a study with a large nationally representative dataset by researchers on the University of Michigan who’ve observed the identical households yearly since 1968. Based on this evaluation, I even have concluded that a transparent majority of Americans will live in poverty for at the very least one yr of their adult lives.

About 58.5% of Americans will live below the official poverty line for at the very least one yr, between Age 20 and 75while 76% are either in poverty or living in poverty – meaning their income is below 150% of the poverty line.

Figures released within the Census Bureau's annual report show that only about one in nine Americans resides in poverty today. However, my research shows that three in 4 Americans will experience poverty or near poverty in some unspecified time in the future of their lives. The upshot is that poverty must be viewed as an “us” problem, not a “them” problem.

How does poverty within the United States compare to similar economies?

The United States has one in all the very best poverty rates amongst Western industrialized nations. Whether you take a look at working-age adults, children, people over 65, or the whole population, the United States is on the forefront by way of Extent and depth of poverty.

A key reason for that is that the federal government does much lower than its counterparts in lots of other countries to assist people escape poverty. US safety net is comparatively weak in terms of protecting Americans from economic poverty.

The result’s that the share of Americans living in poverty in any given yr is amongst the very best amongst comparable nations.

In addition, the extent of each Income and wealth inequality In the United States, poverty tends to be more extreme than in other high-income countries.

How do you interpret the long-term patterns of poverty rates within the United States?

The United States made significant progress in reducing poverty within the mid-Twentieth century. The poverty rate was 22.4% in 1959 to 11.1% in 1973.

This improvement is as a result of the robust economy of the Sixties and government initiatives often called the “War on Poverty.” Since 1973, nevertheless, the general poverty rate has hovered between 11 and 15 percent. It has tended to say no somewhat during times of economic growth, and has risen during times of economic stagnation and recession.

The official poverty rate of 11.1% in 2023 is identical because the poverty rate in 1973. The supplementary poverty rate, which shall be 12.9% in 2023, reflects the same lack of progress. It was first calculated in 2009 and was 15.1% on the time.

However, there are two major success stories.

First, older Americans are less more likely to experience poverty.

In 1959, 35.2% of individuals over 65 lived in poverty – the very best rate of all age groups. In 2023, only 9.7% of older Americans lived in povertybecause the official rate shows, and that was one in all the bottom for all age groups.

The most important reason for this decline was the Expansion of social security advantages and the introduction of the Medicare and Medicaid programsWithout these programs, poverty amongst older Americans would increase to an estimated 40%.

The other major success was that the share of US Children in poverty fell significantly in 2021 because of this of the expansion of the kid allowance and the Economic cushioning payments The federal government provided aid to all Americans starting in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked devastating economic havoc.

As a results of these and other measures The additional poverty rate amongst children fell by almost half from 9.7% in 2020 to five.2% in 2021. With the phasing out of those advantages, the kid poverty rate has returned to pre-pandemic levels. According to the Supplementary Poverty Measure, it rose to 13.7% in 2023 – the very best rate since 2018.

On Wednesday morning, the day before Thanksgiving, Mae woke up, put her hair in curlers, and turned on her laptop. A message appeared, saying that her Safari web browser had encountered an issue and offering the 83-year-old a link that might connect her to the Apple Computer Company. Mae clicked on it.

She didn’t understand it yet, but Mae, like Millions of Americans yearly, had fallen into the clutches of fraudsters. Over the subsequent 10 hours, the criminals tried various ways to steal their money.

The best approach to get them to purchase gift cards was to get them to purchase them. The cards from retailers like Target, Apple and Amazon are sold in drugstores and supermarkets.

They are higher for fraudsters than money, easier to move and just as anonymous. Criminals can obtain gift card numbers online, in stores all over the world or Sell or trade them on illegal markets on the Darknet, telegram or discord.

An estimated $8 billion is stolen annually from seniors age 60 and older through scams perpetrated by strangers. in response to AARP. The cards are some of the common fraud methods reported by older adults,According to the Federal Trade Commission.

Mae’s story is one in every of many cases which have prompted us to – a Professor of Fraud Prevention and Forensic Accounting the previous top financial regulator and Pulitzer Prize winner investigative reporter – to analyze how fraudsters and corporations exploited cracks within the Civil War-era system of economic regulation.

The investigation shows that federal regulators have did not protect the general public from gift card fraud and Congress has largely bowed to regulators. Efforts by states and the federal government to rein within the industry have been fought by lobbyists and gift card trade groups. And gift card retailers are sometimes not much help to law enforcement.

One of us learned about Mae's case through his work as a fraud investigator and has seen dozens of comparable cases. Mae, who lives in Maryland, doesn't want to offer her last name, but she wants people to know her story in order that they don't make the identical mistakes.

In gift card fraud, everyone advantages except the victim: fraudsters, gift card firms, and retailers. Criminals benefit from a rapidly evolving payments industry that’s shrouded in secrecy and designed to make sure easy transactions.

Call this number

When Mae called the number that appeared on her screen, a person who introduced himself as Mac Morgan, an “Apple high security engineer,” answered. The problem appeared to be coming from her bank, he told her. She explained that she lived at M&T, a bank in northeast Buffalo, New York. Call them, he said, and gave her a phone number.

The woman who answered said her name was Alivia and that she worked from M&T Bank's anti-fraud unit. Alivia told Mae that a European pornographer and scammer had tried to realize access to her account and withdraw $20,000 through the night. The withdrawal had been blocked, but Mae needed to get to the bank and collect the cash before the scammers did.

Alivia promised to remain on the phone with Mae throughout the method.

Gift cards are the most recent tool utilized by scammers to defraud people of their money through schemes resembling romance scams, fake tax returns, and false investment schemes.

The The average reported loss amount is $1,000.but between 2021 and 2022, greater than 100 consumers reported losses from gift card fraud exceeding $400,000, in response to an FTC public records request. According to Jordan Hirschfield, a present card analyst at Javelin Strategy & ResearchHe estimates that between 1% and 5% of gift card sales could possibly be fraud, but since nobody keeps records, it's difficult to get a precise number. If the 1% to five% figure is correct, that's between $5.5 billion and $27.5 billion per yr.

A victim’s fear bubble

Mae had a Fear bubblean artificially induced state of panic that makes rational considering difficult.

Anyone can turn into a victim. Mae had graduated with honors from an elite private university. She is a sober retired nurse who lives independently. Now, on the instructions of a scammer, she rushed to her bank in a panic.

At the bank, the teller and manager tried to dissuade Mae from withdrawing $20,000 in money. After about quarter-hour, they managed to get her to calm down.

In Maryland, the bank had no alternative but to offer Mae her money. This isn’t the case in other states. In Florida, a state that’s battling increased fraud cases against seniors, The legislature passed a law In May, financial institutions were allowed to postpone transactions with people over 65 if there is affordable suspicion of exploitation.

Reports from law enforcement agencies indicate that even a couple of hours' delay can burst the fear bubble created by fraudsters.

Several states have passed or are considering laws requiring warning labels on gift cards. Delaware, Iowa, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island And West Virginia.

Next, Alivia led Mae to a Cash2Bitcoin He went to an ATM at a gas station and explained the registration process, including uploading her driver's license, a know-your-customer requirement that doesn't apply to gift cards. Mae put 1000’s of dollars into the machine. At $15,000, she reached the limit for deposits.

Alivia then passed the phone to a co-worker named Ross, who instructed Mae to purchase gift cards. At Rite Aid, Mae bought 4 $2,000 cards, scratched off the backs of the cards, and skim the numbers to Ross.

But on the Food Lion supermarket, a manager who knew her refused to sell her gift cards. Ross gave up and told her to go home but not to inform anyone what had happened.

Gift card firms claim to be “heavily regulated” because Congress has passed the bank card law in 2009. It eliminated many gift card fees, prohibited them from being valid for no less than five years, and allowed state laws to override federal laws. However, it didn’t expand existing protections against consumer fraud on credit and debit cards.

In 2010 Congress created a unified regulatory authority for financial consumer protection: the Consumer Protection Office for FinanceBut the agency has not kept pace with the Increase in consumer financial products outside banksThe regulations it passed in 2016 and 2018 exempted most gift cards from regulation. The FTC and Treasury Department have also proven ineffective in combating the issue.

The fear bubble bursts

By the time Mae finally pulled into her driveway, the ether had already died down. “There was a big lightbulb: 'You've been screwed,'” she said.

Mae called M&T: There was no open fraud case. She called Target: The gift cards had already been spent. Mae got most of her Bitcoin a reimbursement, because of compliance efforts and the fraud freeze on her account the day of the fraud. But the cash from the gift cards was gone.

Fraud against the elderly, including through gift cards, is predicted to proceed to extend.

Mae reported her story to the local police, AARP and the FTC database“It can happen to anyone,” she said.

Crypto markets look like calm heading into the weekend after a volatile week. This week tested how institutional investors latest to crypto trading would react to the massive swings which might be nothing latest to more experienced digital currency investors.

The sell-off in Bitcoin and Ether began earlier this week, wiping out $367 billion in value just as markets in Japan were crashing. But it seems these crypto newbies were willing to purchase the dip.

Spot Ether Exchange Traded Funds recorded a complete Net inflows of around USD 120 million This week, most traders bought on Monday and Tuesday, when the world's second-largest cryptocurrency was 42% below its March peak of over $4,000.

Although net flows for the spot Bitcoin ETFs have been negative since Monday, data from crypto analytics firm CoinGlass shows demand picked up mid-week, with spot fund volumes increasing by greater than $245 million on Wednesday and Thursday.

It can also be helpful that the regulatory wind appears to be changing.

Nevertheless, one other US judge has sided with the crypto industry in a legal dispute against the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

District Judge Analisa Torres ordered Ripple to pay a civil penalty of $125 million, which was significantly lower than the $2 billion demanded by the SEC. Ripple's XRP token rose 22% on Thursday following the news.

Low-income Americans ages 18 to 64 with cancer saved about $1,250 per yr in treatment costs inside seven years of the brand new system being implemented in 2014. Affordable Healthcare Act, in keeping with my recent study.

These patients either earned money themselves or got here from families who $17,609 or less per yr and due to this fact were eligible for Medicaidthe federal government's important medical health insurance program for low-income Americans.

But for adults under 65 with annual incomes of no less than $51,000 – and personal medical health insurance – costs rose by $3,100 per yr over the identical period. And that increase compounded the financial chaos that cancer may cause.

I’m a PhD student in pharmaceutical health outcomes and policyI conducted this study with two other scientists, Douglas Thornton on the University of Houston And Chan Shen at Penn State.

We desired to learn the way the ACA has modified the price of treating cancer patients. To discover, we examined data from a US government database over time 2011 to 2020. We excluded individuals who were treated for non-melanoma skin cancer because easier to treat than other kinds of cancer.

These expenses included medical health insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs akin to copayments, deductibles, hospital stays, doctor visits, emergency services, and residential care services. We compared these costs within the three years before the ACA was implemented, 2011 to 2013, and the seven years after, 2014 to 2020.

We excluded people age 65 and older to concentrate on working patients. We also adjusted all costs for inflation and expressed them in 2020 dollars. We also took steps to forestall changes in insurance status from affecting our results.

Treatment costs for the greater than 16 million Americans ages 18 to 64 who developed cancer between 2011 and 2020 varied by income.

For those eligible for Medicaid, spending fell by about 31%, from a median of $4,000 per yr in 2014 to $2,750 in 2020.

Cancer patients with annual incomes of no less than $51,040 spent a median of $13,000 per yr on health care costs before the ACA. By 2020, their costs had increased 24%, to a median of $3,120.

In addition, these people were greater than twice as prone to spend a big portion of their income on health care after the ACA was implemented than before – making it difficult for them to afford other basic necessities like food and shelter.

Cancer treatment costs decreased barely, but not significantly, for individuals with annual incomes between about $17,600 and $51,000.

Why it’s important

Around 1.9 million Americans develop cancer annually. Treatment costs rose to almost 210 billion dollars in 202020% greater than in 2015.

Costs for patients vary and depend largely on whether and what kind of insurance coverage they’ve. Costs for cancer patients also vary depending on treatment and how well they tolerate themThe costs of medication, doctor visits and hospital services wide spectrum.

Some patients spend a lot on cancer treatment that they’ve difficulty paying their bills, a situation often called “Financial toxicity.” Many Cancer survivors have debt You cannot repay and even lose their homesIt is common for individuals who have had cancer Avoid redeeming prescriptions or they undergo treatment to limit their expenses – and thereby endanger their health.

What's next

New cancer treatments are promising, but a lot of them are very expensive. In 2022, the common annual cost of cancer treatments reached $260,000 per patient. in comparison with $63,500 10 years earlier.

However, not all cancer patients profit of those medical advances. That's why my research team is now working on developing predictive models to assist healthcare providers assign patients to the treatments they’re most definitely to reply well to.

Our The focus is on immune checkpoint inhibitorsa more moderen kind of cancer treatment that helps a patient's immune system higher attack cancer cells.

The annual report of the Donations to the USA Foundationproduced in collaboration with the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana Universityfound a decline in donations adjusted for inflation. In nominal terms, i.e. without this adjustment, donations increased by $10 billion in 2023.

Total giving has fluctuated greater than usual lately, with the primary spike reflecting donors' response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the racial justice movement.

The Development of the stock markets also played a task. Stocks fell sharply in 2022 after a robust three-year serieswhich peaked in 2021.

In 2023, conditions were more stable: Stocks performed well. Unemployment rate remained lowAnd the economy grew despite Fear of a recessionAlthough inflation remained higher than the historical norm, Interest rates fell below the highs reached in 2022.

Moreover, Americans failed to answer the weird events which have shaped philanthropy over the past 4 years.

As two of the Lead article of the report Researcherswe see on this recent data signs of strength somewhat than weakness in giving. Giving from all sources – individuals, foundations, legacies and firms – remained above 2019 levels.

Foundations play an even bigger role

Foundation grants fell from $106 billion last yr to $104 billion in 2023. Yet for the second yr in a row, nearly one in five dollars given to charities got here from a foundation. In contrast, 40 years ago, about one in twenty dollars given to charities got here from foundations.

Until the collapse in 2023, foundation giving had increased for 12 years in a row. A key reason for this regular growth is the best way foundations donate: Most foundations donate 5% of their total assets the minimum amount required by law annually. The remainder of their assets remain invested and are likely to grow over time. And as the worth of the inspiration's assets increases, so does the quantity they donate.

The willingness of foundations to donate is more likely to proceed to extend in the approaching years, as major donors, including wealthy philanthropists, Bill Gates, Mike Bloomberg And Warren Buffetdonated more to their foundations.

In the 4 years through 2023, giving to foundations was higher than at any time since Giving USA began collecting such data in 1978.

Giving from individuals, by far the most important source of charitable giving, tends to be more attentive to the economic conditions of a given yr than giving from foundations, and has subsequently been more uneven lately. Giving from individuals remained relatively flat in 2023, declining 2.4% to $374 billion, in comparison with $384 billion the previous yr.

Start of stabilization in 2023

Churches and other religious causes have historically received the most important share of giving, and that was true in 2023. However, religious giving fell 1% to $146 billion in 2023 and has declined in 4 of the last six years.

Social service organizations, also often called human services nonprofits, meet basic needs akin to hunger and homelessness. Historically, donations to those charities have increased during economic downturns, followed by several years of slower growth.

Over the last 4 years, nevertheless, a distinct pattern has emerged.

Donations to social service organizations surged in 2020, as expected, as many individuals sought to support low-income and otherwise vulnerable people by donating to food banks, domestic violence organizations, and homeless shelters. These varieties of donations then continued to rise in 2021.

After a slight decline in 2022, donations on this area increased again in 2023.

Giving to social services has grown a lot that it was the second-largest category of charitable giving behind religion for the second yr in a row in 2023. Until 2020, education-related giving, akin to giving to high schools and universities, was typically the subsequent largest category after religion.

The latest Giving USA report shows what American philanthropy looks like in a yr that was relatively uneventful in comparison with previous years: 2023 was the primary yr since 2017 wherein neither unusual events nor laws led to major changes in giving.

We will proceed to watch these trends to raised understand what's next for American philanthropy.

In a mix of incidents described by animal rescuers as rare, two young peregrine falcons fell from their nests within the Bay Area this week – and were each reunited with their families.

A falcon named Lucia, a part of a Family that plays the important role on San Jose City Hall's popular hawk cam, fell from an 18th-floor ledge near his nest.

The young bird of prey, who’s near with the ability to fly, was present in an alcove at City Hall on Friday by volunteers who were tracking the progress of him and his three sisters, Alma, Zoe and Luna, toward flight, in response to a city Facebook page. The 4 falcons hatched in May and Females typically begin to fly just over six weeks after hatching.

“She will need to stay there, cover herself for the night, and be fed by a parent for a few more days so the wing feathers can grow an additional 1/4 inch each day for optimal flight AND a little fluttering to keep the wings strong,” a post on the town's website said. San Jose City Hall Falcons Page.

Late Saturday morning, the page was updated to report that Lucia was getting “a little nervous.”

Earlier this week, one other hawk that might not yet fly from a lesser-known family somewhere in San Mateo County fell from a 100-foot-high nest on Caltrans property, the Peninsula Humane Society reported. A biologist brought the bird to the Humane Society, where staff found it was dehydrated. “Fluids were administered,” the Humane Society said in an emailed statement. After the hawk was stabilized, UC Santa Cruz biologists and Caltrans staff reunited the bird with its family.

“It looks like these babies caught spring fever and are trying to leave the nest a little early,” said Colleen Crowley, spokeswoman for the Peninsula Humane Society.

Peregrine falcons are considered the fastest birds on the planet and might Speeds of virtually 200 miles per hour while diving. The species was nearly worn out, together with bald eagles and brown pelicans, by the now-banned pesticide DDT, which thinned eggshells. All three species have recovered. Peregrine falcons were faraway from the endangered species list in 1999.

Webcams of peregrine falcon nests are very talked-about, including those on the Campanile Tower at UC Berkeley and, since May, on Alcatraz Island.
