I began practicing psychotherapy in the course of the Reagan administration. It was 30 years before concern about politics became a clinical problem for one in every of my clients.

I remember the moment it first happened: There was a protracted voicemail from a distraught woman asking for therapy for anxiety and depression in response to Donald Trump's 2016 presidential election. I listened twice to be sure that I hadn't missed anything. I didn't have that. There were no further problems. This woman wanted therapy for political distress.

This was something latest to me and each therapist I knew. But now I see no sign of this clinical challenge easing.

Political polarization within the USA is on the rise highest level ever measured. A growing majority of each Republicans and Democrats say they’re considering it members of the opposite party be unintelligent, dishonest and immoral.

What I call a political emergency is a bipartisan mental health issue. It is predicated on the idea that terrible things could occur since the country is within the hands of bad leaders. Many persons are very afraid of what the opposite side might do. Both Republicans and Democrats have experienced this ordeal, nevertheless it peaks at different times for each parties, depending on who won the last election.

We psychotherapists prefer to base our interventions on research-based strategies which have been verified in clinical trials or, if not, on strategies based on the clinical expertise of master therapists who’ve written classic books. There is nothing about how you can take care of political distress.

But therapists cannot tell a client in distress that further research is required before we may also help. Instead, we depend on what is thought about how best to take care of related problems. Here's the recommendation I give my clients who’re upset concerning the way the world goes.

Look longer

Information about American history is relevant to political emergencies since it is how people psychologically evaluate their situations Comparison with anchors or standards. You compare current dangers and threats with what you’ve experienced and survived prior to now.

A Democrat comparing today's United States to the country a decade ago might feel gloomy. But broader comparisons can provide a more informed and reassuring perspective.

The United States has faced great trials and tribulations throughout its history. The country has proven to be a resilient democracy. Essential information concerning the Civil War, the Great Depression, and World War II creates the sense that the present political moment will not be the one dangerous time our republic has ever faced.

Wisdom of the Serenity Prayer

God, grant me the serenity to simply accept the things I cannot change, the courage to vary the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Change what you’ll be able to, recognize what you’ll be able to't.
Jerry 'Woody'/Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA

The Serenity Prayer is a robust summary of research on coping. As I describe in my book: “Find Goldilocks“The Famous Call identifies two basic strategies and tells you when to make use of each. People need the strength to vary what could be modified and the serenity to simply accept what can’t be modified. Political distress, like many stressors, requires a mixture of each tactics.

Doing what you’ll be able to means turning political fears into political actions, including voting, volunteering, donating money, and serving as poll staff. Can one person's actions make a difference? They could make all of the difference for an individual. You can't do every little thing, but you’ll be able to do something.

Additionally, take motion to handle an issue even when it doesn’t lead to an answer. often reduces the burdenespecially if it brings you along with like-minded people.

Once you've done what you’ll be able to, it's vital to appreciate how much is beyond your control: the entire world doesn't rest in your shoulders alone. Then you’ll be able to turn to the gorgeous things in your private life with a transparent conscience.

It helps limit consumption of political news; At a certain point, you're not learning anything latest and are only fueling your excitement.

Imagining the worst is usually a first step toward overcoming fear.
rob dobi/Moment via Getty Images

The best things in life usually are not political

A fundamental tool of cognitive therapy for anxiety is the query: “What's the worst? “This could plausibly happen?” The purpose of this query will not be to get anxious people to take into consideration worst-case scenarios – they already do – but to advance their thought process and get an image of how they may survive their worst fear. That's strange effective type of calming.

Democrats consider Donald Trump's second administration will hurt people. But with vital exceptions – like undocumented immigrants who could be deported – When many individuals try to assume exactly how their lives might be harmed in concrete, concrete, and serious ways, they sometimes don't give you much.

That doesn't mean nothing bad will occur. It means you're prone to give you the chance to handle whatever happens. While Trump's policies is likely to be unhappy and even offended for those on the opposite side of the aisle, they’re unlikely to be catastrophic on a right away, on a regular basis level for big groups of individuals.

A really broad perspective will remind you that democracy is one Rarity in world history. For most of civilization, people have lived in some form of monarchy or tyranny, and most of them have managed to prosper.

I’m not suggesting that individuals withdraw from the political world. I consider it is vital to arise for what you think is correct. My advice is to not placed on your rose coloured glasses and retreat to your personal secure space, the remaining of the world be damned.

But an important thing Sources of human well-being are family, friends, meaningful work, hobbies, art, nature, spirituality and acts of kindness. None of this is determined by political systems. We can take care of political hardship by drawing on the very best things in life.

Donovan Mitchell, faced with the challenge of solving the NBA's oft-discussed rankings problem, smiled as he gave an instantaneous answer.

“Get into more fights,” the Cleveland Cavaliers star said.

He was joking, in fact, and delivered his usual eloquence in his actual answer. But at its core, his joke was about something.

The biggest problem with the NBA is (mainly) not what number of 3-pointers are uttered, except perhaps by those intent on denigration. Nor is it the length of the season or the seeming triviality of the regular season games. Are these concerns? Secure. But only as low-hanging fruit for the unsatiated.

The real problem, because the Christmas Day rankings spike shows, is the dearth of appeal for the league's stars not named Stephen Curry, LeBron James and Kevin Durant. It's the following generation of NBA ambassadors who’ve yet to do enough to get noticed.

LeBron and Curry each lead mediocre teams and still dominated the NBA's showcase day.

Go deeper

Kevin Durant after the Suns' Christmas win: The NBA will stay, “but we're in a difficult phase”

Undoubtedly, it’s unfair to check the appeal of the following wave of stars to legends who’ve left their mark over three a long time. But it's fair to wonder who will take the baton from them. Or who wants it anyway? We know Anthony Edwards does, however the Minnesota Timberwolves star must win for his charisma to count. We know Jayson Tatum wants it, however the Boston Celtics leader's charisma doesn't quite match his success. It's a tough dance.

But the NBA was built on this, on a superstardom that’s as intangible because it is tangible. The NBA was built on the appeal of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. The former was more forward-looking than the latter, but each managed to push the league into the background.

Michael Jordan made sure he was at all times well-dressed and presentable, honoring the indisputable fact that it was a special moment for people to see him. Kobe Bryant spent his entire life preparing for the mantel. James has been willingly in the general public consciousness since he was 16 years old. Curry is saturating the market with himself. Durant appears to be the anti-superstar, but he values accessibility and transparency and cares in regards to the league and the sport as much, if no more, than anyone else.

What the NBA superstars who lead the league have at all times appeared to understand is that the role is each a responsibility and a bonus. With the very best contracts and the distinction of the elite empire comes the burden of carrying the torch.

And Mitchell made a good point. Her burden didn't end along with her playing days.

“The way we talk about our game is great,” Mitchell said. “The way we talk about our current players I think has a big influence on what people think. There are people who ask, 'Who is this guy?' How does he get paid for this?' In my opinion, it's not the best look overall. … Lots of retired people who have shown love and will continue to do so. But I think that's a big thing…in some ways the way you talk about the product. This is something we can really get better at as a whole, as a brotherhood.”

Still, it looks like the following generation of superstars don't care as much about continuing the tradition of taking up the league and winning the love of the audience.

To be fair, a few of these players just aren't naturally drawn to the highlight. And they simply be their authentic selves and retreat into the confines of darkness and peace.

To be fair to them, a few of them will not be from this nation. They may not crave an affinity from the American people. Nikola Jokić, the most effective player within the league, doesn't appear to want that in any respect. Certainly, those that want it understandably don't know tips on how to get it. They have their very own home to retreat to. This is the truth of a world league.

To be fair to them, you’ve gotten to say that they grew up in a special time. Expectations of access have change into paralyzing, as have the implications of such access. Anyone who watched “The Last Dance,” the ESPN documentary in regards to the Chicago Bulls' 1997-98 season, could see how much weight Jordan lost as a superstar. They were just traditional newspaper and broadcast journalists. Since then, the media landscape has multiplied like wet gremlins.

So you’ve gotten to confess that the need not to leap headfirst into this scenario is definitely a rational response. But since players aren't being compensated rationally, it's fair to expect them to participate anyway. Like their ancestors in superstardom.

We need more from the following generation.

You have the dimensions under control. These guys are it Good. The ability is unmatched.

“For us,” Mitchell explained in regards to the role of the following wave of stars, “it's about continuing to play basketball at a high level.” There will at all times be a discourse. There will at all times be something to debate. Just keep playing basketball at a high level. … I feel the most important thing for us is to maintain moving the sport forward.”

Yes. But it takes greater than just great basketball. It takes greater than those unattractive, manicured personas put together by an promoting company from a spotlight group. Fear of going viral requires greater than protected comments. It takes greater than just the need to play basketball and go home.

Mitchell knows this. He is an undeniable fan of the sport. At 28, he can be considered one of the torchbearers of the longer term. The indisputable fact that his Cavaliers are at the highest of the Eastern Conference makes him considered one of the principal ambassadors. When the smoke arrives within the playoffs, whether from Boston or Milwaukee, Mitchell will inhale.

Go deeper

NBA Power Rankings: Prepare for some matchups in January

On Wednesday evening there have been arguments between him and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Oklahoma City vs. Cleveland is a possible NBA Finals preview. Mitchell and SGA are two of probably the most explosive guards, and Jalen Williams and Evan Mobley are two incredible young players. It needs to be a top-notch matchup.

All it takes is fireworks.

This is the NBA's secret recipe. Rivalries. Which are sparked by personalities and fueled storylines. The collision of the celebs. Players who encourage hatred and love.

The NBA is in charge. The owners' intent to suppress dynasties also deprives the league of the special element that dynasties bring. Now it’s missing and it’s unclear where it’ll come from.

It increases the necessity for players to carry the banner high. This requires characters to be vulnerable and reveal greater than just their very own game. A willingness to play a job within the melodrama of all of it.

“More fights,” as Mitchell joked, will be translated as a greater willingness for variety. More of a willingness to return into conflict with each other. Rather, a willingness to challenge one another competitively and theatrically. More of a willingness to at the least be transparent and embrace any drama that arises.

This is how LeBron and Curry got up to now where they’re the seniors of basketball and are still the principal influencers. They dueled at the very best level for 4 years in a row. They attack one another. In their story there’s trash talk and competition between them. They have provoked each contempt and admiration, which has redoubled their interest. They weren't excited about staying cool.

The NBA is desperate for a brand new rivalry.

For some time, it looked like Luka Dončić of the Dallas Mavericks and Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns could be next. We know that Dončić is able to create variety. But that spark was short-lived, although absolutely charming.

For some time it looked like Ja Morant could be next. And perhaps he still is. But he must get his Memphis Grizzlies back on the large stage.

It looked like Edwards was on his way up. But his Timberwolves increasingly seem like a flash within the pan.

Who will take the torch? It isn’t passed on by osmosis. Someone has to get it out of the hands of its current owners. Someone has to seem on the large stage often enough and be effective enough to encourage passion.

Two of the longer term faces of the league, the NBA hopes, closed out 2024 with a showdown in Oklahoma City. SGA vs. Ant Man.

Gilgeous-Alexander scored 19 of his 40 points in a dominant third quarter. He took 15 shots, nine of which were within the paint and 7 of which were within the restricted area. It was a testament to SGA's masterful clout. He was asked about finding his solution to the rim against considered one of the league's best defenses – featuring perimeter hounds like Jaden McDaniels, Donte DiVincenzo and Edwards and led by four-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert.

SGA, surrounded by his teammates on the court as he’s in every interview, paused before answering. Finally he set free a “Hmmmm” as he slumped his shoulders with a sigh. He checked out the rafters as he searched his brain for a solution. He even rubbed his chin, attempting to massage his mind to search out the suitable words.

The NBA needs him to seize this moment, to make it a moment. In the competition for attention spans, with the NFL encroaching on its space and the narrative demeaning the league, it might be SGA's job to step in and declare its supremacy. Mock Edwards. Make something of it. “More fights.” It clearly wouldn't be organic for him. But it would definitely be useful.

Finally he answered.

“I,” Gilgeous-Alexander said, holding his mouth open for a moment before letting out the words, “I reach everyone to the brim.”

Close enough. Currently.

Saturday night appeared to be business as usual for Kristaps Porzingis. After a slow begin to the season after getting back from injury in November, Porzingis seemingly did all the things he normally would in Boston's win over the Chicago Bulls.

He scored 22 points, second most on the team behind Jayson Tatum's 43-point triple-double, added seven rebounds and two blocks and managed a dunk within the win.

But when asked if he would finally rejoin Kristaps Porzingis tonight, who helped lead Boston on its championship run, the 7-foot-3 center hesitated.

“Honestly, I still get there. I want to feel a little better,” Porzingis said. “I know I'm playing a little better, but my rates aren't perfect. I don't feel my shot perfect. … I know I can play a lot better.

“…I just still feel like I need to conserve some energy. But overall, I’m getting there, and as soon as I get there, you’ll know and I’ll let you know.”

Porzingis has proven that when healthy, he’s the proper addition to Boston's starting lineup. His ability to protect a few of one of the best players within the league while also scoring at multiple levels and stretching the ground is an ideal fit for Joe Mazzulla's systems each offensively and defensively.

However, Porzingis has had some issues staying on the court for prolonged periods of time, as was the case throughout his decade-long NBA profession.

Despite his limited sample size this season, there hasn't been a very notable decline in his offensive game. He is averaging 19.1 points per game, one point lower than last season, and seven.1 rebounds per game, just shy of his 7.2 per game within the 2023-24 season.

A healthy Porzingis makes it even harder to stop an already dangerous Boston unit, so the Celtics are undoubtedly looking forward to him getting back to 100% in the approaching weeks.

Cal's matchup against UNLV within the LA Bowl on Wednesday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood feels more like a stepping stone right into a recent reality for the Golden Bears.

A win over the Rebels (10-3) would give Cal (6-6) its first winning season since 2019, nevertheless it would hardly give teams the annual momentum they hope for from a bowl game.

Everything modified in a number of weeks for the Bears, who can be playing without budding star quarterback Fernando Mendoza. Mendoza entered the transfer portal a yr after pledging his long-term loyalty to Berkeley. “The greenest pasture is here,” he said on the time.

At least half a dozen others on the roster also left, including starting winger Nyziah Hunter. The Bears even lost their long snapper through the portal.

This is only the start of the upheaval. After the Bears' 38-6 loss at SMU within the regular-season finale – a game Cal played without Mendoza, who was reportedly in poor health – coach Justin Wilcox began overhauling his offensive coaching staff.

He took over the coordinator duties from Mike Bloesch and later fired him as offensive coach. Out comes longtime receivers coach Burl Toler III, a preferred alum who also served as recruiting coordinator.

It is unclear whether there can be further changes.

Former Boise State and Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin can be the Bears' recent offensive coordinator, however the status of current quarterbacks coach Sterling Gilbert stays in query. Famika Anae from New Mexico will coach the O-line and Kyle Cefalo, most recently the offensive coordinator at Utah State, will maintain the receivers.

Controversial former Washington State coach Nick Rolovich has been hired as a senior offensive assistant. Rolovich is understood for his successful version of the run-and-shoot offense, but was fired by WSU through the 2021 season for failing to comply with the state's requirement to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

None of the brand new hires can be in charge against UNLV. Side decisions are made “by committee,” Wilcox said.

That may be the Bears' approach at quarterback, with backup Chandler Rogers considered questionable after his injury against SMU. That could give redshirt sophomore CJ Harris, a transfer from Ohio, his first start for the Bears.

Barring personnel absences, the Bears could possibly be healthier than they’ve been in weeks.

Inside linebacker Cade Uluave is predicted to be back after missing 4 games as a consequence of injury. Likewise, running back Jaivian Thomas was listed as fit for play after sitting out the SMU game, and offensive lineman Sioape Vatikani, who has been out and in of the lineup all season, is healthy.

Still, it's a surprise that the Bears got here into the sport as 1.5-point favorites. in keeping with Vegas Insider.

UNLV has also seen changes as second-year coach Barry Odom took a job at Purdue. Former Florida and Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen will replace him, although receivers coach Del Alexander will lead the bowl game as interim head coach.

It's unattainable to know exactly what the bears will seem like in a yr. Their defense, a strength a lot of the season, is led by seniors reminiscent of linebacker Teddye Buchanan (112 tackles), cornerback Nohl Williams (FBS with seven interceptions – each first-team All-ACC picks) and honorees The third team will lose, amongst others, Craig Woodson as a security and Xavier Carlton as a defensive end.

It could be a surprise to see junior running back Jaydn Ott return after coping with a nagging injury and an unpredictable offensive line. Ott managed greater than 1,300 yards in 2023, but his NFL Draft rating took a major hit this fall.

Why do I feel more rested after I get up than when my alarm clock or another person wakes me up? – Calleigh H., age 11, Oklahoma

We've all been there: You're in the course of a ravishing dream. Maybe you're flying. As you fly through the air, you come across an eagle. The eagle looks at you, opens its beak and – BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

Your alarm goes off. Keep dreaming, it's time to rise up.

Many people – children and adults alike – notice that they feel more awake once they get up naturally from sleep than when an alarm or one other person, similar to a parent, wakes them up. Why is that?

I’m a neurologist Who studies the brain and specifically what happens within the brain once you sleep? I also care for kids and adults who do stay awake well and wish to sleep higher. In my research, I work with parents to assist them teach their children good sleep habits.

To understand how you can sleep higher and why waking up naturally from sleep helps you are feeling more alert, you first need to grasp sleep cycles.

The sleep cycle

The Sleep cycle consists of 4 stages. One of them is REM, which stands for rapid eye movement. The other three are non-REM stages. When you go to sleep, you first enter a state of sleepiness called non-REM stage 1.

This is followed by deeper sleep phases, the so-called non-REM stages 2 and three. Each non-REM phase is deeper than the previous one. Then, about 90 minutes after you first go to sleep, you enter the fourth stage, REM sleep. This is a phase of lighter sleep where you dream loads. After a number of minutes, you’ll return to non-REM sleep.

These cycles repeat throughout the night, with most individuals alternating 4 to 6 cycles of non-REM sleep and REM sleep each night. As the night progresses, cycles contain less non-REM sleep and more REM sleep. That's why it's necessary to get enough sleep in order that the body can sleep enough of each REM sleep and non-REM sleep.

REM vs. non-REM sleep

How do researchers like me know if an individual is in non-REM or REM sleep? In the sleep laboratory we will see this from their brain waves, eye movements and the strain of their muscles, for instance of their chin. These are measured by placing sensors called electrodes on the scalp, across the eyes and on the chin.

These electrodes detect brain activity starting from low-amplitude waves (the peak of the wave) and comparatively fast to high-amplitude waves (a bigger wave) and comparatively slow. When we’re awake, the wave height is low and the waves are relatively fast. When you sleep, nevertheless, the waves turn out to be higher and slower.

Non-REM stage 3 has the best and slowest waves of all sleep stages. During REM sleep, brain waves are low in amplitude and comparatively fast, and eye movements are also rapid. For a healthy brain, people need each non-REM and REM states to learn and remember.

Wake up naturally

When you get up on your personal within the morning, it normally happens at the top of your sleep period. Think of it like getting off the train once you stop on the station. But being woken up by an alarm or one other person is like jumping off the train between stops, which may feel jarring. That's why it's good to get up naturally at any time when possible.

People can actually train their brains to get up at a consistent time on daily basis, which is a natural stopping point. The brain has an internal 24-hour clock that dictates once you first feel sleepy and once you get up. This is said to ours circadian rhythms.

You can adjust your every day rhythm so that you simply get up naturally every morning.

Train the brain to get up at a consistent time

First, it's necessary to go to bed at a consistent time so that you get enough sleep. Staying up too late doing homework or taking a look at your phone can affect your sleep and leave you counting on an alarm clock – or your parents – to wake you up.

Other things that may make it easier to go to sleep at a healthy time include physical activity through the day and avoiding coffee, soda, or other caffeinated drinks or foods. Physical activity increases the production of brain chemicals that make it easier to go to sleep, while caffeine does the other and keeps you awake.

Secondly, it’s worthwhile to concentrate to the sunshine around you. Too late within the evening light, including from screens, can affect the production of a in your brain Chemical called melatonin this promotes sleep. But within the morning once you get up, it’s worthwhile to be exposed to light.

Morning light helps you synchronize or harmonize your circadian rhythm with the surface world and makes it easier to go to sleep at night. The easiest technique to do that is to open the blinds or curtains in your room. In winter, some people use light boxes to simulate sunlight, which helps them adjust their rhythm.

Benefits of a superb night's sleep

A superb sleep routine features a consistent bedtime and wake-up time in addition to getting enough sleep frequently. That is, normally Sept. 11 hours for school-age children who will not be yet teenagers and 8-10 hours for teenagers.

This will make it easier to learn optimally at school, improve your mood, maintain a healthy weight, and promote many other features of health.

News that Republican President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday named distinguished vaccine skeptic and obesity drug critic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to go the Department of Health and Human Services. In short, HHS is the sprawling agency that oversees the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, amongst others. The Cabinet-level HHS secretary position requires confirmation by the Senate, where Republicans can have a 53-seat majority while the Democratic caucus can have 47 seats. Some members of the GOP, resembling Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, congratulated Kennedy on his nomination. However, it’s currently unclear whether Kennedy can reach the 50-vote threshold for confirmation. Shares of obesity drug maker Eli Lilly fell greater than 4% on Friday, extending their decline of about 3% in Thursday's session. Media reports of Kennedy's nomination emerged late Thursday afternoon, and Trump confirmed the choice in a social media post after the closing bell. Eli Lilly's most important competitor within the obesity market, Denmark's Novo Nordisk, also saw shares fall greater than 4% on Friday. Shares of Covid-19 vaccine makers including Moderna and Pfizer sold off late Thursday and again in Friday's session. A well-liked exchange-traded fund tracking biotech stocks is ready for its worst week since March 2023. Meanwhile, analysts at Deutsche Bank downgraded British vaccine maker GSK over Kennedy's selection. Big picture During his campaign, Trump had promised to let Kennedy “go wild” on health issues if given the prospect to return to the White House, but his selection to go HHS was widely viewed as unlikely on Wall Street. It now shrouds the pharmaceutical industry in uncertainty until there may be more clarity about its support within the Senate. The 70-year-old Kennedy – son of the late U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy – began his profession as an environmental lawyer. In recent a long time, he has gained traction for his controversial views on health issues, particularly vaccines. Kennedy has made unfounded claims that childhood vaccinations are linked to autism, despite quite a few studies refuting these claims. “Vaccines do not cause autism,” the CDC website states. Kennedy has more recently focused on what he calls the chronic disease crisis within the United States, particularly diabetes and childhood obesity. It was a spotlight of his unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign, first within the Democratic primary after which as an independent candidate. Kennedy endorsed Trump in August. LLY YTD Mountain Eli Lilly's year-to-date stock performance. Kennedy has criticized the pharmaceutical industry on a lot of issues. In an editorial within the Wall Street Journal in September, Kennedy wrote that the U.S. should consider stopping firms from promoting on to the general public and argued that lawmakers in Washington should “cap drug prices so that companies do not give Americans essential drugs.” Kennedy specifically mentioned Novo Nordisk's diabetes drug Ozempic when he argued for drug price caps. Ozempic is the flagship of the fast-growing GLP-1 class, through which Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are currently the 2 dominant players. Some on Wall Street expect the marketplace for GLP-1 drugs to be value $100 billion by 2030 .GLP-1 drugs mimic a gut hormone to manage blood sugar and suppress appetite, resulting in weight reduction Eli Lilly's GLP-1 called tirzepatide Mounjaro for diabetes and Zepbound for obesity is central to our investment thesis in the corporate. Jim Cramer has said it could turn out to be the best-selling drug of all time, largely due to its weight reduction launch. Kennedy believes that the high obesity rate within the United States will be combated through changes in diets and food systems. Weight-loss drugs, Kennedy argued on social media, don’t get to the “root” of the obesity problem but merely “pleasing the wallets of distant Big Pharma executives.” Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks and other GLP-1 proponents argue that obesity is a disease and needs to be treated as such by doctors and health insurers alike. In this manner, they argue, GLP-1 needs to be considered a beneficial tool alongside eating regimen and exercise in treating obesity. Lilly and Novo Nordisk have also tried to point out that GLP-1 improves health outcomes for patients far beyond just shedding kilos. Earlier this 12 months, the FDA announced that Novo Nordisk's obesity drug Wegovy can also be prescribed to cut back the chance of significant heart problems resembling heart attacks and strokes in obese patients with heart problems. Eli Lilly has demonstrated similar heart health advantages to tirzepatide. It has also shown promise in treating sleep apnea, amongst other things. The bottom line is that Eli Lilly has been our favourite pharma stock for years due to its outstanding pipeline, led by GLP-1. And the value development since our entry in October 2021 – which has greater than tripled despite the recent declines – speaks for itself. The S&P 500 is up just over 30% over the identical period. But at this point, Kennedy's nomination requires us to be more cautious about Eli Lilly within the short term. The stock could remain weak because the market processes the implications and likelihood of Kennedy leading HHS. From a pharmaceutical investor's perspective, it's hard to assume a more worrisome selection for HHS secretary than Kennedy, Jim said. “We’re not touching Eli Lilly yet. There’s no need for that,” Jim said during Friday’s morning briefing. He noted that our early September profit taking of nearly $961 per share allows us to be patient and cautious as Kennedy's nomination process unfolds. Eli Lilly's recent quarterly results were a large number in some areas, but underlying growth in prescriptions for its key GLP-1 drugs was encouraging.
People sometimes feel pressured to do that Choose one identity over one other. Kamala Harris, who’s biracial—her mother is from India and her father is a black immigrant from Jamaica—illustrates the complexity of defining identity.

Harris is usually asked questions on her black identity. She has replied with the words the way it affects their self-confidence. “I'm really clear about who I am, and if other people aren't, they need to get their own therapy.”

At the July 2024 National Association of Black Journalists conference, former president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump questioned her black identity by saying, “Is she Indian or is she black?”

The query reflected a narrow either/or approach. As a scholar guided by the ideas of black thinkers To explore how society works, I do know that identity is just not the results of a single selection, but relatively the convergence of several aspects, comparable to an individual's environment and socialization.

“The truths we represent”

Harris' parents, Donald Harris and Shyamala Gopalan, met on the University of California, Berkeley within the Nineteen Sixties. They bonded through the novel politics of the black mental tradition and located each community and shared values. As a part of one Study group and later the Afro-American Association, they developed a language to confront civil rights struggles and systemic oppression.

Harris often identifies herself as each African American and Asian American. During the Democratic National Conventionshe acknowledged her biracial background and upbringing.

But in her autobiography, “The Truths We Hold,” Harris explains how her mother knew some people would see her and her younger sister Maya as Blackand was “determined to ensure we grow into confident, proud black women.”

Harris selected Howard University, a historically black university, and joined a black sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. In her autobiography, she emphasized how her parents instilled in her the values of labor and social justice.

Identities are fluid and expanding

Individuals can hold multiple dimensions of identity based on their race, sexual orientation, culture and social class, amongst other things. It is unattainable to separate one from the opposite. For example, someone will be black, a lesbian, and a girl at the identical time.

Instead, identities inform one another; No one is solely Black, a girl, or a lesbian, but these social identities mix to create a novel experience. Furthermore, identity is fluid, and expand. Your beliefs and values can change, as can the best way people define themselves.

In this fashion, identity is the work of Context and selection. Defining your identity is just not nearly deciding who you must be, but in addition about how you must live and appear on the planet. It is a posh means of making decisions and overcoming challenges. For example, someone on the intersection of race and gender might select to completely embrace each identities, despite external pressures to adapt to societal expectations.

Harris' acceptance of her multi-ethnic identity is thus the results of things she learned from her parents and different contexts and communities during which she lived.

Claims to an identity

Historical, Complex identities were disregarded that don’t fit into clear categories, driven by fears about maintaining white racial purity and protecting the privileges that include it. So when Trump questioned Kamala Harris's racial identity, it delivered to mind the long-standing notion of forcing someone to achieve this Choose one identity over one other.

An example of that is the “one-drop rule” within the United States, where even a small variety of non-white ancestries classified an individual as non-white. Reinforcing strict racial boundaries. The one-drop rule dates back to a 1662 law in Virginia that ensured that a single drop of black blood granted minority status to people of mixed race.

The concept that identity will be simplified to simply one thing, comparable to race, is predicated on the false assumption that these identities never change. It's value repeating that Harris is of South Asian and Black descent and it’s her selection to define her racial identity. I consider that any try to query her on this topic is disingenuous and never based on a willingness to interact with the complexities of her or other people's identities.

Teachers can use generative AI in quite a lot of ways. You can use it to develop lesson plans and tests. Or teachers might depend on a generative AI tool like ChatGPT to realize insight into find out how to teach an idea more effectively.

In our recent researchOnly teachers who do each said they felt they got more done. They also told us that their teaching was simpler with AI.

Over the course of the 2023-2024 school yr, we followed 24 teachers in K-12 schools across the United States as they wrestled with whether and find out how to use generative AI of their work. In fall 2023, we gave them standard training on generative AI. We then conducted multiple observations, interviews, and surveys all year long.

We found that with generative AI, teachers felt more productive and effective once they turned to it for advice. The standard methods of teaching state standards that work for one student or in a single school yr may not work as well in one other. Teachers may get stuck and want to try a special approach. It seems that generative AI generally is a source of ideas for these alternative approaches.

While many Focus on the productivity advantages Our study suggests something else about how generative AI can assist teachers deliver tests or activities faster. Teachers feel more productive and effective when their students learn, and generative AI appears to be helping some teachers develop recent ideas for promoting their students' learning.

Why it matters

K-12 education requires creativityespecially in the case of tasks like lesson plans or integrating technology into the classroom. However, teachers are under pressure to work quickly because they’ve so many things to do, resembling preparing classroom materials, meeting with parents, and completing elementary school students' schoolwork. Teacher don't have enough time day by day to finish all vital work.

We know that these pressures occur often makes creativity difficult. This can leave teachers feeling stuck. Some people, especially AI experts, consider generative AI to be one Solution to this problem; Generative AI is all the time ready for motion, works quickly and never tires.

However, this view assumes that teachers know find out how to effectively use generative AI to get the solutions they seek. Our research shows that for a lot of teachers, the time it takes to get a satisfactory result from the technology – and adapt it to their needs – is not any shorter than the time it might take them to create the materials themselves from scratch to create. For this reason, using generative AI to create materials is just not enough to realize more.

When schools understand how teachers can effectively use generative AI for advising, they will make more informed decisions about find out how to put money into AI for his or her teachers and find out how to support teachers in using these recent tools. Additionally, this provides feedback to the scientists developing AI tools that could make higher decisions in regards to the design of those systems.

What is just not yet known

Many teachers face obstacles that prevent them from realizing the advantages of generative AI tools like ChatGPT. These advantages include the flexibility to provide higher materials more quickly. However, the teachers we spoke to were all recent users of the technology. Teachers who’re more acquainted with ways to advance generative AI—we call them “power users”—can have other ways to interact with the technology that we haven’t seen. We also don't yet know exactly why some teachers go from recent users to experienced users while others don't.

The Research Brief is a temporary insight into interesting scientific work.

NEW YORK — When her husband activates the tv to look at news concerning the upcoming presidential electionsFor Lori Johnson Malveaux this is usually a signal to go away the room.

It can get an excessive amount of. She often goes to the TV in one other room to look at a movie on the Hallmark Channel or BET. She longs for something comforting and entertaining. And she has company.

While about half of Americans say they follow political news “extremely” or “very” closely, about 6 in 10 say they must limit the quantity of knowledge they eat about government and politics to avoid feeling overwhelmed or exhausted, in line with a brand new survey by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research And USAFacts.

Don't worry: Malveaux plans to vote. She at all times does. “I'm just getting to the point where I don't want to hear the rhetoric anymore,” she said.

The 54-year-old Democrat said what bothers her most is hearing people on the news tell her that something she saw along with her own eyes – corresponding to the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 – didn't really occur.

“I feel like I'm being manipulated. That's one way of putting it,” she said.

Sometimes it seems like a bombardment

Caleb Pack, 23, a Republican from Ardmore, Oklahoma, who works in the data technology industry, tries to maintain up with news through his phone's news feed, which is full of a wide range of sources, including CNN, Fox News, the Wall Street Journal and The Associated Press.

But sometimes, says Pack, it seems like a bombardment.

“It's good to know what's going on, but both sides are going a little bit to extremes,” he said. “It just feels like it's a topic of conversation everywhere, and it's hard to escape it.”

Media fatigue shouldn’t be a brand new phenomenon. A Pew Research Center Survey conducted at the top of 2019 found that about two in three Americans feel fatigued by the flood of reports. That's concerning the same as a survey from early 2018. During the 2016 presidential election campaign, about six in 10 people felt overwhelmed by the flood of reports.

But this may be particularly acute with regards to political news. The AP-NORC/USAFacts poll found that half of Americans feel the necessity to limit their consumption of knowledge about crime or conflict abroad, while only about 4 in 10 limit their consumption of reports concerning the economy and the job market.

This is simple to know, as television channels corresponding to CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC provide a wealth of political discussion, and the Internet offers a wide selection of political news, sometimes complicated by disinformation.

“There's a flood of information,” says Richard Coffin, USAFacts' research and advocacy director, “and people are having a hard time figuring out what's true and what's not.”

Women usually tend to feel that they should limit media use

In the AP-NORC poll, about 6 in 10 men said they follow election and political news a minimum of “very” closely, compared with about half of girls. For all kinds of reports, not only political, women were more likely than men to say they’d to limit their media consumption, the poll found.

According to the survey, white adults are also more likely than black or Hispanic adults to imagine they should limit their media consumption related to politics.

“If it shows up on my page, when I'm on social media,” he said, “I just scroll past it.”

The AP poll of 1,019 adults was conducted July 29-August 8, 2024. The sample got here from NORC's probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of error for all respondents is plus or minus 4.0 percentage points.
