Shares of the drugmaker closed greater than 6% lower on Tuesday.

Eli Lilly said it now expects full-year 2024 sales of about $45 billion. That's lower than the $45.4 billion to $46 billion the corporate expected in October. The recent outlook would still represent a 32% year-over-year jump in sales.

Struggling to fulfill rising demand for its diabetes drug Mounjaro and obesity drug Zepbound, Eli Lilly is investing billions to expand its production capability for the corporate's booming so-called incretin drugs. The efforts look like paying off: The Food and Drug Administration reaffirmed its decision in December to declare an end to the U.S. shortage of tirzepatide, the energetic ingredient in each drugs.

In an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, Eli Lilly CEO Dave Ricks said the corporate is “getting tons of deals online” and “that kind of growth is likely to continue.”

He also noted that the corporate will expand its production capability and expects to supply at the least 60% more salable doses of its incretin drugs in the primary half of the yr than in the identical period in 2024.

For the fourth quarter, Eli Lilly expects sales of $13.5 billion. The total includes roughly $3.5 billion for Mounjaro and $1.9 billion for Zepbound.

Wall Street had expected fourth-quarter and full-year revenue of $13.94 billion and $45.49 billion, respectively, in response to analysts surveyed by LSEG.

The outlook cut comes as Eli Lilly competes with it Novo Nordisk and other, smaller competitors for share within the exploding marketplace for weight-loss and diabetes drugs. Eli Lilly is developing an obesity pill that may be more convenient for patients and easier to supply, and Ricks expects it to be approved as early as early next yr.

“While the U.S. incretin market grew 45% in comparison with the identical quarter last yr, our previous forecasts had expected a good faster acceleration in growth for the quarter. This contributed along with lower-than-expected year-end channel inventory levels.” “Our Q4 results,” Ricks said in a statement.

The drugmaker also said it expects revenue of $58 billion to $61 billion in fiscal 2025.

Eli Lilly is expected to report full quarterly results on February 6th.

Fuzzy math: Cheaper mortgages can increase affordability, but often come when economic problems are looming.

Topline

In 30 of those years the important thing rate of interest fell, on average by 0.6 percentage points. In contrast, rates increased by a median of 0.9 percentage points in the opposite 19 years.

In these years When loans became cheaper, mortgage rates averaged 7.3%. That's a bargain in comparison with 8.2% when mortgages became dearer.

reality

What is usually forgotten is that low mortgage rates often correlate with higher unemployment. Remember that to purchase a house you wish a solid salary.

In the years when mortgage rates fell, U.S. unemployment averaged 6.4%, but within the years when mortgages became dearer, it averaged 5.5%.

Now this economic weakness can dampen inflation – a driver of mortgage rates.

As rates of interest fell, the patron price index rose 3% per yr. When rates of interest rose, inflation averaged 5%.

Conclusion

Falling mortgage rates usually are not a panacea for housing.

The gloomy business climate, which is usually accompanied by low-cost financing, can be dampening appreciation, in accordance with a federal index for real estate prices.

California home prices rose a median of 5% when mortgages fell, in comparison with an 11% increase when mortgages became dearer. Similar patterns are present in national prices: they rise by 4% when rates of interest fall and rise by 7% when rates of interest rise.

Cheaper money gives a slight boost to home purchases.

Combining existing and recent home sales nationwide, the pace of purchases increased a median of three% during these years of declining rates. Transactions fell 3% as financing costs rose.

Still, those 49 years suggest that cheaper mortgages are inclined to include hidden costs — a weaker economy that could make finding a house even tougher.

With each passing game, it seems increasingly like a bargain that the Patriots were in a position to select Christian Gonzalez with the No. 17 pick within the 2023 NFL Draft.

Gonzalez was the third cornerback drafted after a somewhat unexpected slide to the center of the round, where New England happily chosen him and made him the team's No. 1 cornerback, going after opposing No. 1 wide receivers every week clung.

Speaking with Patriots author Evan Lazar, Gonzalez explained why he feels he fell into the primary round later than originally expected.

“The shock for me was that I don’t talk much and people thought I wasn’t competitive,” Gonzalez said. “I came into the league and showed what I can do. I guess that's because cornerbacks are usually a lot more talkative and talk a lot more nonsense. It's just not my game. So they thought I wasn’t competitive.”

Gonzalez developed a popularity for not talking much or in any respect, even after making big plays for the Patriots. Instead, he lets his piece do the talking, and that gets numerous people talking.

New England coach Jerod Mayo praised Gonzalez after the Patriots' loss to the Cardinals, by which the second-year cornerback turned in one other lockdown performance, keeping rookie wideout Marvin Harrison Jr. in check throughout Sunday's game.

“He is our best defensive player and he has proven that [vs. the Cardinals]Mayo said. “Just a guy that goes out and competes over and over again, and he’s done a good job.”

Gonzalez has also been successful in stopping a number of the NFL's top receivers akin to Tyreek Hill and Ja'Marr Chase. Next-Gen Statistics Revealed Gonzalez is the one defender within the NFL to focus on 10 or more deep balls for only one reception.

The 22-year-old makes a robust case for his first profession Pro Bowl nomination and expresses his ambitions to develop into an All-Pro within the near future.

“All-Pro is definitely a better award than the Pro Bowl. The Pro Bowl is all a bonus,” Gonzalez said. “I mean, if it comes, it comes. Cool. But yeah, I’m definitely aiming more for All-Pro.”

Gonzalez is among the many Patriots' youngest players but is already a pillar that New England wants to construct on to flee the trenches of mediocrity and re-emerge as a playoff threat within the NFL.

The stock moves also come as insurance firms and their practices face increasing public criticism following last week's fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealth Group's insurance division. Health scores had already fallen in the times after Thompson's killing.

A Senate bill introduced by Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Josh Hawley, R-Mo., would force the businesses that own health insurers, or PBMs, to divest their pharmacy businesses inside three years, the Journal reported . Lawmakers told the Journal that a companion bill will likely be introduced within the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

“PBMs have manipulated the market to enrich themselves – driving up drug costs, defrauding employers and driving small pharmacies out of business,” Warren said in a press release. “My new bipartisan bill will untangle these conflicts of interest by curbing these middlemen.”

The press release added that healthcare firms owning each PBMs and pharmacies represents a “gross conflict of interest that allows these companies to enrich themselves at the expense of patients and independent pharmacies.”

The largest PBMs — UnitedHealth Group's Optum Rx, CVS Health's Caremark and Cigna's Express Scripts — are all owned by or affiliated with health insurers. Together, they manage about 80% of the nation's prescriptions, in line with the FTC.

PBMs are at the center of the U.S. drug supply chain, negotiating discounts with drug manufacturers on behalf of insurers, large employers and federal health plans. They also create lists of medicines or prescription lists which might be covered by insurance and reimburse pharmacies for the price of prescriptions.

The FTC has been investigating PBMs since 2022.

Tobacco product use amongst middle and highschool students has fallen to its lowest level in 25 years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday.

The CDC and FDA collected data on youth tobacco product use through the National Youth Tobacco Survey. It found that 2.25 million middle and highschool students reported using tobacco products previously 30 days, up from 2.8 million in 2023.

The decline reflected a decline within the number of scholars who reported using electronic cigarettes, from 2.13 million in 2023 to 1.63 million in 2024.

“We are on the right track when it comes to reducing tobacco use among our nation’s youth,” Brian King, director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, said in a news release Thursday. “But we must not take our foot off the gas. Continued vigilance is needed to further reduce all forms of tobacco use among youth. Addressing inequalities remains an essential part of this effort to ensure we leave no one behind.”

Female students consistently reported the most important decline in use, and Hispanic students also reported declines in use of all tobacco products. Authorities said evidence-based strategies, including price increases, media campaigns and smoking ban measures, are more likely to have led to a decline in tobacco consumption.

Among students who reported using tobacco products, e-cigarettes remain essentially the most commonly used tobacco product at 5.9%, but nicotine pouches are actually the second mostly used tobacco product at 1.8%, followed by cigarettes at 1. 4%.

Nicotine pouch use amongst students actually increased, although not by enough to be considered significant, from 1.2% in 2023 to 1.8% in 2024, the CDC said in September.

“Youth use of tobacco products in any form – including e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches – is unsafe,” said Deirdre Lawrence Kittner, director of the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health, in a press release in September. “It is important that we remain vigilant and committed to public health to ensure all youth can lead healthy, tobacco-free lives.”

Zyn was the most well-liked nicotine pouch brand at 68.7%, in comparison with the second hottest brand On at 14.2%.

Zyn, the oral nicotine pouch brand from Philip Morris Internationalexploded in popularity on social media earlier this 12 months which led to a nationwide shortage.
Bitcoin is about to record its best September ever

Analysts have also warned of overbought conditions as Bitcoin rose nearly 5% last week within the five days ended September 27 – as net inflows into global crypto exchange-traded products accelerated to their highest level since mid-July. During the identical period, Coinbase and MicroStrategy gained 12% and 21%, respectively. Both stocks rose 6% on Friday.

The combined net purchase volume of U.S. Bitcoin ETFs last week (16,774 BTC) exceeded the everyday monthly supply of newly mined Bitcoins (13,500), in line with Bitwise-owned ETC Group. This was largely attributable to the Chinese central bank's about-face, the corporate said.

For this month, Bitcoin is on target to finish its strongest September ever with a gain of 8% and its second consecutive positive September – historically the cryptocurrency's weakest month.

Coinbase expects a monthly lack of 1% and is down nearly 18% within the quarter. Some analysts expect this downward trend to proceed in the approaching weeks. Meanwhile, MicroStrategy is up 30% for the month and 25% for the quarter.

The market is heading right into a seasonally strong quarter for crypto and risk assets typically.

Bitcoin's narrative is usually debated – whether it’s a store of value or a risk asset – but its correlation is currently more much like that of the S&P 500 than gold, and investors expect Bitcoin to learn from rate of interest cuts and clarity following the US presidential election Seasonal and favorable market conditions will result in larger inflows into crypto ETFs.

The driver has since been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, San Jose police Officer Tanya Hernandez said in a press release.

The incident occurred around 11:55 p.m. Friday in a parking zone within the 14900 block of Camden Avenue.

Hernandez said an initial investigation revealed that a person was doing doughnuts in a white 2006 Ford pickup truck when a girl within the passenger seat fell out and landed on the asphalt.

“Then the passenger was hit by the pickup truck,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez said the person took the girl to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office will release her identity after it’s confirmed and her next of kin has been notified.

The death was the thirty seventh traffic fatality on town's streets this yr. During the identical period last yr, there have been already 36 traffic fatalities in San Jose.

Hernandez said the motive force and two other adult male passengers cooperated with the investigation.

Alcohol was determined to be the explanation for the crash and the motive force was taken to county jail, Hernandez said.

Totals: Rents have fallen in nine of California's 16 major cities this summer.

Source: My trusty spreadsheet scoured ApartmentList's August rental tracker for 100 major U.S. cities, including 16 in California.

Top line

Not only did Oakland see the biggest rent decline within the state last 12 months (-8.8%), it also saw the biggest decline in the complete country.

That doesn't mean that rents in Oakland are low cost, at the very least not by national standards. Landlords charged $1,793 for a one-bedroom apartment (sixteenth amongst 100 U.S. cities) and $2,153 for a two-bedroom apartment (seventeenth).

What's up

In these California cities, renters were the winners…

San Diego: Overall rents decreased 3.8% year-over-year (eighth out of 100). The median price for a 1-bedroom apartment (eleventh) was $1,982 and for a 2-bedroom apartment (seventh) was $2,484.

Chula Vista: 3.6% discount from the previous 12 months (No. 9) with $1,730 for a 1-bedroom apartment (No. 17) and $2,264 for a 2-bedroom apartment (No. 15).

Long Beach: 2.2% discount from the previous 12 months (No. 24) with $1,577 for a 1-bedroom apartment (No. 22) and $1,931 for a 2-bedroom apartment (No. 21).

Los Angeles: 2% discount from the previous 12 months (No. 26) at $1,885 for a 1-bedroom home (No. 15) and $2,404 for a 2-bedroom home (No. 12).

Riverside: 1.1% discount from the previous 12 months (No. 36) with $1,491 for a 1-bedroom apartment (No. 26) and $1,791 for a 2-bedroom apartment (No. 25).

Santa Ana: 0.9% lower than the previous 12 months (No. 39) with $1,919 for a 1-bedroom apartment (No. 14) and $2,263 for a 2-bedroom apartment (No. 16).

Fremont: 0.9% lower than the previous 12 months (No. 39) with $2,297 for a 1-bedroom apartment (No. 8) and $2,783 for a 2-bedroom apartment (No. 5).

San Francisco: 0.5% discount from previous 12 months (No. 43) at $2,752 for a 1-bedroom apartment (No. 1) and $3,262 for a 2-bedroom apartment (No. 1).

What's up

In these cities, tenants paid…

Fresno: Rents increased 2.5% overall for the 12 months (86th out of 100 renters), with rents for a 1-bedroom apartment rising to $1,082 (73rd) and for a 2-bedroom apartment rising to $1,335 (seventieth).

San Jose: Increase of 1.9% inside a 12 months (81st place) with $2,503 for a 1-bedroom apartment (third place) and $2,969 for a 2-bedroom apartment (4th place).

Moreno Valley: Increase of 1.5% inside a 12 months (No. 74) with $1,611 for a 1-bedroom apartment (No. 21) and $1,832 for a 2-bedroom apartment (No. 23).

Anaheim: Increase of 1.3% inside a 12 months (No. 67) with $1,969 for a 1-bedroom apartment (No. 12) and $2,429 for a 2-bedroom apartment (No. 11).

Sacramento: Increase of 1% in a single 12 months (No. 63) with $1,400 for a 1-bedroom apartment (No. 37) and $1,769 for a 2-bedroom apartment (No. 27).

Santa Clarita: Compared to the identical period last 12 months, there was a rise of 0.5% (No. 57), with $2,006 for a 1-bedroom apartment (No. 10) and $2,441 for a 2-bedroom apartment (No. 9).

Irvine: Apartment in a single 12 months (No. 52) with $2,553 for a 1-bedroom apartment (No. 2) and $3,130 for a 2-bedroom apartment (No. 2).

Conclusion

These statistics suggest that budget-conscious renters in California can find relatively inexpensive deals in certain cities. A wave of latest apartment complexes has led to competition amongst landlords to fill empty units.

An unstable economy with high unemployment also reduces demand for rental housing, prompting landlords to either lower rents, offer other incentives, or raise prices moderately.

Record summer demand for air travel shouldn’t be translating into record profits for U.S. airlines, and the airlines may have to reply for that discrepancy once they report their quarterly results this month.

Some airlines have forecast record demand and, in some cases, record revenue. On Sunday, the Transportation Security Administration screened greater than three million people – a single-day record.

But higher labor and other costs have eaten into airlines' profits. To adapt to slower demand growth and other challenges, some airlines have slowed and even stopped hiring altogether, in comparison with the huge hiring they’d in the course of the post-pandemic rebuild.

And some airlines have faced delays within the delivery of recent, more fuel-efficient aircraft from Airbus and Boeing at the identical time that a Pratt & Whitney An engine recall has put dozens of jets out of motion.

Still, U.S. airlines have increased capability, offering about 6% more seats in July than they are going to in July 2023, based on aviation data firm OAG. The expansion is keeping airfares in check, and the sector's stocks have lagged the broader market.

The NYSE Arca Airline Index, which covers 16 predominantly US airlines, has fallen by almost 19% this yr, while the S&P500 has increased by greater than 16%.

'Clear as mud'

What the third quarter will appear like for airlines is “as clear as mud,” Raymond James analyst Savanthi Syth said in a note on Friday, citing headwinds equivalent to potentially lower spending by economy class guests, the impact of the Paris Olympics on some bookings in Europe and possible changes in demand for business travel.

In addition, some travelers decide to travel in late spring and early summer, which raises questions on demand in late summer.

Investors will gain more insight into the traditionally quieter end of summer and the remaining of the yr as airlines release their quarterly results, starting with Delta Airlines on Thursday.

Analysts consider Delta to be the most effective airline within the group, mainly on account of the airline's success in marketing costlier premium seats and the lucrative contract with American Express.

In April, Delta, essentially the most profitable U.S. airline, forecast adjusted quarterly earnings of $2.20 to $2.50 per share for the second quarter, down from adjusted earnings of $2.68 per share a yr earlier.

Delta, its rival United Airlineswhich reported the next week, and Alaska Airlines are the highest picks of airline analyst Scott Group of Wolfe Research, which said in a June 28 research note that the three have lower earnings risk and higher free money flow than other airlines.

Shares of Delta and United are each up about 14% this yr through July 5, leading a sector that has been mostly down this yr. Alaska shares are up about 2%.

Cheaper rates

Airports are busy this summer, but airlines have expanded their flight schedules each domestically and internationally, which is pushing prices down. According to consultancy Airline/Aircraft Projects, capability between the US and Europe increased by almost 8 percent in July in comparison with a yr earlier, with the brand new routes primarily targeting leisure travelers.

Fare tracking company Hopper reported in June that summer flights between the U.S. and Europe cost a mean of $892 in economy class, in comparison with $1,065 in summer 2023.

According to the newest U.S. inflation data, airfares fell nearly 6 percent in May in comparison with a yr ago.

Forecasts lowered

Despite higher passenger numbers, some airlines admitted that revenues were lower than expected on account of the increased flight connections. American Airlines On May 28, the corporate lowered its second-quarter revenue and profit forecasts and announced the resignation of its chief business officer after a sales strategy backfired.

“The imbalance between domestic supply and demand has led to a weaker domestic pricing environment than we expected,” American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said the subsequent day at a Bernstein industry conference. “There is more discounting than there was a year ago. Now, capacity in the industry is expected to decline in the second half of the year, and that should help.”

Southwest Airlines In late June, the airline lowered its second-quarter forecast, citing changing demand patterns. The Dallas-based carrier is under pressure to quickly change its long-profitable business model – which features no seat reservations and just one class of service – as major rivals equivalent to United and Delta tout strong growth in premium cabins.

The airline is attempting to fend off activist investor Elliott Investment Management, which disclosed in June that it owned a virtually $2 billion stake within the airline and called for a change in leadership.

“We will adapt as our customers' needs adapt,” Southwest CEO Bob Jordan said June 12 at an industry event hosted by Politico to debate potential recent revenue initiatives.

Both American and Southwest will announce their second-quarter results towards the tip of July.

Make changes

Some loss-making airlines equivalent to JetBlue Airways And Border airlinesare already making changes.

JetBlue has canceled unprofitable flights this yr and ensured that planes with the luxurious business cabin “Mint”, whose tickets can cost greater than 4 times the economy fare, are used on the proper routes.

Meanwhile, Frontier Airlines and other discount airlines Spirit Airlines have eliminated change fees for traditional coach tickets and above, following an identical move by larger, established airlines in the course of the pandemic. Both budget carriers announced in May that they might begin offering package fares that include seat reservations and other additional services for which they previously charged fees.

Spirit is grappling with the fallout from a judge's ruling that barred JetBlue from buying the airline and has been hit hardest by the grounding of Pratt engines. The airline warned about 200 pilots last week that they might be furloughed this yr, based on the pilots' union.

At Spirit's annual shareholder meeting in June, CEO Ted Christie dismissed suggestions that Spirit was considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy since it faces a debt payment of greater than $1 billion due in September 2025.

April's producer price index got here in above estimates, further complicating the Federal Reserve's rate cut schedule. However, Jim Cramer argued that a negative revision to the March PPI offset price pressures in Tuesday's release. Elsewhere, the return of meme stocks like GameStop is an enormous topic on Wall Street. But you shouldn't sell a life sciences company's shares based on strength, Jim argued, suggesting that recent momentum could prompt some investors to revisit the stock. “You don’t sell a stock that’s finally moving,” he said. “It's stuck in the mud and people like it now.” The long-awaited turnaround in biotech industry funding and enhancements in customer inventories were evident in Danaher's earnings report last month, which sent shares up 7, 2% in a single session. We'll be waiting for updated comments from management at a Bank of America healthcare conference afterward Tuesday. The stock has now risen by greater than 10% for the reason that starting of the yr. Amazon announced Tuesday that Amazon Web Services CEO Adam Selipsky will step down in June. Selipsky will leave Amazon's cloud computing business in a powerful position as first-quarter revenue rose 17% yr over yr. Shares of the club holding company fell about 0.5% on Tuesday. “He did a remarkable job,” Jim said. “I understand why [the stock] is down because he's a titan.” Matt Garman, an 18-year company veteran who currently serves as senior vp of sales and marketing at AWS, is predicted to switch Selipsky.
