By CATHY BUSSEWITZ

NEW YORK (AP) — The trouble began around 3 p.m. every day after Cathy Higgins spent 5 or 6 hours observing a series of computer screens at her desk. Her university job as head of research projects included the close examination of figures and details on contracts, applications and budgets.

As they vision became worseHiggins walked around and talked to her staff. She began planning face-to-face meetings for the afternoon. But late at night, after her children had gone to bed, she resumed work on the pc.

“If I continued to work on the blurred vision, the migraines would occur,” Higgins said.

Digital screens are ubiquitous, not only at work but additionally at home. Schools and shops. According to the American Optmetric Association, an estimated 104 million working-age Americans spend greater than seven hours a day in front of screens. All that screen time can take a toll.

Too much screen exposure could cause dry or watery eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. It also can cause nearsightedness or nearsightedness in some people, especially children. Some technicians even describe temporary bouts of dizziness when screens for too long.

Eye strain

One reason for the discomfort is that the muscle that helps eye focus tightens while you stare closely at screens for long periods of time.

“This muscle mustn’t remain tense all day. And while you do, it's like picking up a light-weight weight and attempting to hold it over your head for hours,” said Steven Reed, president of the American Optmetric Association. “It's not difficult to learn. But after a while, your body just gets tired, even if it’s not a hard exercise.”

Fortunately, exposure to blue light from computer screens and devices has not been shown to cause permanent eye damage, according to the American Academy of Opthalmology.

Still, symptoms can interfere with work, family time, and rest. As an optometrist in Mississippi, Reed cares for patients who frequently complain of eye pain, headaches and blurred vision related to computer use. He recommends getting an eye exam and taking frequent breaks.

For Higgins, trying to catch up on work she couldn't do because her eyes were too tired on weekdays cut into the time she spent with her daughters on weekends. “They were playing together, and I couldn't be as involved in what they were doing as I would have liked,” she said.

Here are some tips from ophthalmologists to reduce eye strain caused by devices.

Follow the 20-20-20 rule

Take a break from sitting at the computer every 20 minutes. During the pause, focus your gaze on something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Stopping close-up work and looking at something in the distance gives tired and tense muscles time to relax.

“Fortunately, eye strain is only temporary,” said Raj Maturi, an ophthalmologist at the Midwest Eye Institute in Indianapolis and a spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “The best approach to avoid these symptoms is to take breaks from our screens or activities near work and use lubricating eye drops as needed.”

People typically blink about 18 to 22 times per minute. But when looking at a screen, the rate drops to three to seven times per minute, according to the Cleveland Clinic. This is where eye drops come into play.

It's good to exercise and get outside, but if you don't have time for a walk outside, taking frequent 20-second breaks can help.

Change your desk configuration

Some people find that using a larger computer monitor helps reduce eye fatigue. You can also increase the font size on your laptop, monitor or smartphone screen.

Higgins did all of this after starting a new job as senior vice president at Stand Up to Cancer. Since she works from home in Midlothian, Virginia, she got a 29-inch monitor and sits about three feet away from it, about a foot further than in most office environments.

The changes helped. She still has occasional blurring issues, but not as frequently. “If I have a longer day, like a 12-hour day, I start having vision problems again,” she said.

According to the American Academy of Opthalmology, sitting an arm's length away from your screen and adjusting it so you're looking slightly downward can also help reduce eye strain.

Be careful with product claims

Some products, such as Some products, such as blue light glasses, are marketed with claims that they reduce digital eye strain, improve sleep, and prevent eye disease. However, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, several studies have found that the glasses are not very effective. It's really our behavior around digital devices that causes symptoms, not the small amount of blue light emitted from screens, the group said.

Extracurricular optics

After leaving the computer at work, many people read or scroll on their smartphone screen. It's not just workers: kids use laptops, tablets and smart screens at school all day long.

Too much screen time or focusing on nearby objects can accelerate the onset and progression of nearsightedness, especially in children, said Ayesha Malik, a pediatric optometrist in the department of ophthalmology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Anyone who streams shows should do so on a TV instead of a tablet to reduce eye strain, she said.

Children should follow the 20-20-20-2 rule, which includes an extra “2” at the end to encourage outdoor play for 2 hours a day, which is helpful Eye developmentshe said.

“The reality is that most children interact with screens all day at school and at home. It becomes difficult to ascertain the total number of hours,” Malik said. “The goal is to plan no more than 20 minutes during a session.”

Sleep deeply and soundly

The blue light that digital screens emit can increase alertness, allowing you to watch Netflix on an iPad or other devices scroll through Social media feeds in bed could make it difficult get restful sleep.

To give your eyes and brain the remaining they need, doctors recommend turning off your screen one to 2 hours before bed. You also can set devices to “dark mode” within the evening to scale back the consequences of vibrant light. If you're used to streaming videos at night, try listening to an audiobook or podcast as a substitute.

MELBOURNE, Australia – A very cold December afternoon in Midtown Manhattan, within the lobby of a Central Park hotel.

A 23-year-old woman looks up from a club chair near an elevator. She's wearing a baseball cap and fidgeting with her mobile phone.

“Hey,” she says.

Look again. Oh, right, that's Emma Navarro: US Open semifinalist and a top-10 women's player after only one full season of high-profile tournaments. She's relaxing before a packed evening of photo ops, press interviews and an appearance on the New York Knicks NBA basketball game with a number of other tennis players you’ll have heard of – Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton and Jessica Pegula.

It may very well be fun. On the opposite hand, it's also pretty cool to hang around in that comfortable chair and anonymously watch the hustle and bustle of your hometown go by. There are many the reason why Navarro, who plays Ons Jabeur within the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday, dedicated himself to tennis. Being a megastar wasn't certainly one of them.

“The exact opposite,” she said recently, after a second-round victory in Melbourne over Wang Xiyu of China, her second three-set battle in a row, the consequence of which was uncertain until the ultimate point.

She was at it again on Saturday, opening the packed Margaret Court Arena against Ons Jabeur, a three-time Grand Slam finalist and darling of the game who had just returned from a torrid few months with injury. After winning 20 of the primary 24 points to take a 5-0 lead in the primary set, she struggled to prevail within the third set, saving three break points while serving at 1-2.

When it was over, she praised her parents for taking her and her siblings on six-hour bike rides as children, for her ability within the third set. Then she scribbled “me heart 3 sets” into the TV camera. She should. In distance games last season she went 19:6. On her way off the sector, she immediately busied herself signing autographs for the fans hanging over the stands. The game took place in the sunshine and shadow of lunchtime in Melbourne and Navarro hasn't quite gotten used to being the focal point day after day.

“It's something I work really hard on and I feel comfortable being in the spotlight. It is the opposite of my nature. It feels unnatural,” she said.

That happens sometimes in tennis. Not every thing develops synchronously. Not everyone who can seemingly shoot forehands and backhands on a tightrope all afternoon is an extroverted alpha dog who lets their life unfold in a series of Instagram posts and TikTok videos.

And so it’s with Navarro, whose tennis life until last summer was an exploration of incrementalism. At 18, after an incredible junior profession – including a singles final and doubles title on the French Open – she still wasn't sure if she desired to grow to be knowledgeable tennis player. So she went to the University of Virginia for 2 years, where she won the NCAA national championship in women's singles on the collegiate level.

When she turned skilled, she decided against wildcard entries, which might have been easy to attain since her father Ben is energetic within the tennis business and owns the Cincinnati Open of the ATP and WTA 1000 classes. She has fought well through second-tier tournaments on the ITF and WTA 125 circuits.

Go deeper

Win or lose, Emma Navarro still desires to hit a ball

Navarro was not outside the highest 100 until April 2023. She finished that 12 months as world No. 32, the magic number for a Grand Slam rating, and won her first WTA Tour tournament in Hobart the day before the tournament began, Tasmania Australian Open 2024.

Then she played her way into the highlight. She won consecutive wins against Coco Gauff, first at Wimbledon after which on the US Open, where Gauff, now a friend, was the defending champion. She made it into the highest 10 for the primary time. And then things got slightly more hectic.

A flood of interview and appearance requests. A business portfolio that now includes deals with Fila, Yonex, Red Bull, Dove, Fanatics, De Bethune and, as of Friday, Mejuri, the high-end jewelry brand that invited her to a custom photo shoot in Charleston, S.C., in December . Navarro is the corporate's first athlete ambassador.

For Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, Naomi Osaka and Gauff, Iga Swiatek and Zheng Qinwen, something like that is just one other day that ends with a “Y.” For Navarro, it’s, in her own words, “an adjustment.”

There's also a tennis aspect to the adjustment, which can go some solution to explaining Navarro's first two matches here this month. Both ended up being tennis escape rooms, first within the Rod Laver Arena after which in the positioning's second stadium, the Margaret Court Arena.

In each games she had a break of serve within the third set. Peyton Stearns, one other former NCAA champion, had a match point against her within the second set tiebreaker that she couldn't convert. Stearns then served for the match within the third, but couldn't recover from the road.

In each cases, Navarro was in the primary game of the day, landing him in prime time within the US on ESPN – a slot Gauff often attends. Like the celebrity and notoriety that comes with winning and marketing deals, big court appearances and prime time send a not-so-subtle message of expectation.

In each games, the normally consistent Navarro threw balls from the center of the baseline that held her back for much of last 12 months, wearing down one opponent after one other. Then she found a way, combining her best shots of the afternoon into the few crucial points that made the difference twice over.

Against Jabeur, she prevailed 5-0 in the primary set before Jabeur began to play with the finesse that brought her to the brink of the game's biggest victories. She returned to 5-4. Navarro still got the set.

For most of her tennis life, Navarro had been the girl after which the lady who was thrilled when she showed up at a tournament and learned she was playing at No. 35 behind the ability.

“Like, take me to the forest,” she said.

That doesn't occur anymore.

“You work on something for 20 years, mostly behind closed doors, and then suddenly you're a form of entertainment for people,” she said. “People pay to come and watch you do what you do. It’s definitely an adjustment.”

Navarro's trainer Peter Ayers has worked together with her for eight years. He said his way of acclimating Navarro to being a new edition of herself within the offseason was to follow the formula that got her here.

“It’s always been a very methodical approach,” Ayers said during an interview in Melbourne. “We want her to get better without neglecting her bread and butter. It’s always a balance.”

For Navarro, who won’t ever be certainly one of the giants of the WTA Tour, meaning she must attempt to play larger and more aggressively inside her strengths. She doesn’t intend to fireside lasers, as a few of her colleagues suggest and emphasize.

“I have a lot of concerns about just chasing speed,” Ayers said.

There are other options.

Ayers is a baseball guy. One of his favorite pitchers was Greg Maddux, the star of the Atlanta Braves within the Nineties. Maddux was removed from the toughest pitcher, but nobody could place balls on the sting of the strike zone in addition to he could. “She can work much more precisely,” said Ayers.

The same goes for her cuddles.

Navarro doesn't must attempt to outsmart players like Aryna Sabalenka or Swiatek. But she will be able to do numerous damage if her feet are a step or two closer to and even inside the baseline as a rule.

Ayers, like Navarro, knows that life is different when there may be a single number next to your name on the leaderboard. It's been some time since Navarro sneaked up on anyone, as she did on Gauff at dusk in southwest London six months ago. People are not any longer afraid of losing to them, Ayers said; When this fear disappears, opponents can play freely without worrying about the results.

“You get the best of everything,” he said. “The idea is that it makes you better.”

Navarro has at all times been an issue solver, whether it was finding an opponent, how she desires to spend her time and who she desires to be as a tennis player. In a way, she's now attempting to work out a distinct problem – the right way to exist as this new edition of herself, the version that has been higher than all but a handful of players in the ladies's game during the last six months.

“The single-digit number gets on my nerves a little,” she said. “It’s just so far outside of what I expected of myself.”

However, there have been some revelations recently that can hopefully repay soon. There's a solution to play a certain sort of tennis and still be the lady sitting on a club chair within the hotel lobby, anonymously watching the world go by.

“My tennis can be alpha and I let it do its job and I can just be myself,” she said. “If I don’t feel like myself, I probably won’t play my best tennis.”

Danish health authorities said on Monday they might contact the European Union's medicines regulator to envision the outcomes by two Danes Studies Association between Ozempic and an increased risk of a rare vision-threatening eye disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.

The condition is known as non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, or NAION. It is characterised by lack of vision resulting from reduced blood flow to the front a part of the optic nerve, which connects the attention to the brain.

The disease is usually painless and mostly affects people aged 50 and over. According to some, NAION affects between 2.3 and 10.3 patients per 100,000 people within the United States every year Estimates.

The Danish Medicines Agency said it had been closely monitoring NAION over the past six months for a possible side effect of semaglutide, the energetic ingredient in Ozempic. As of December 10, the authority had received 19 reports concerning the situation in Denmark.

But the whole variety of NAION cases in Denmark has increased since Ozempic was launched on the Danish market in 2018, Jakob Grauslund, professor of eye diseases on the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), said in a release Monday. There was about 60 to 70 cases a yr in Denmark, but now there are as much as 150, added Grauslund, who helped conduct considered one of the studies.

This is the newest potential concern surrounding popular GLP-1 derivatives like Ozempic, which mimic gut hormones to manage blood sugar and suppress appetite. Demand for this class of medication has soared despite high prices and a handful of unpleasant uncomfortable side effects, mostly occurring within the gastrointestinal tract, reminiscent of nausea and vomiting.

In an announcement on Monday, Novo Nordisk said that after a “thorough evaluation of the studies” and an internal safety assessment, the Danish drugmaker “is of the opinion that the benefit-risk profile of semaglutide remains unchanged.” The company added that safety Patients have top priority.

The studies, conducted independently by SDU researchers and other institutions, each found that diabetes patients who took Ozempic were greater than twice as more likely to be diagnosed with the condition as those that took one other diabetes drug .

The first Danish study was based on data from greater than 400,000 diabetes patients, 1 / 4 of whom were treated with Ozempic and the remaining with other diabetes medications. The second study This included data from greater than 44,000 Danish diabetes patients who received Ozempic between 2018 and 2024 and almost 17,000 Norwegian patients who took the drug between 2018 and 2022.

The studies were published on medRxiv, an internet site that publishes studies before they’ve been reviewed by outside scientists. Both appear to substantiate a connection first suggested at Harvard University study Earlier this yr.

Still, the authors of the primary SDU study said absolutely the risk of disease in semaglutide users was low. They added that assuming the danger stays constant over time, the outcomes suggest that a diabetes patient taking Ozempic for 20 years would have a 0.3 to 0.5% probability of developing NAION get sick.

“Although our results do not exclude the possibility of an increased risk of NAION with the use of semaglutide for obesity, the small number of events observed suggests that any potential risk is likely to be of limited absolute magnitude,” the authors of the primary study said.

They added that additional, in a different way designed analyzes are needed to further investigate whether Wegovy users who take semaglutide for obesity even have an increased risk of the disease.

Currently, analysts are less concerned about NAION's risk and its potential to scale back Ozempic prescriptions.

“Unless it is determined that semaglutide is the only GLP-1 receptor that poses this risk [is] “We are unlikely to be impacted,” TD Cowen analyst Michael Nedelcovych said in a research note on Monday.

If doctors have their way, telemedicine is here to remain. This is in keeping with a brand new report from Doximity, which found that 83% of physicians want telemedicine to stay “an ongoing part of their clinical practice.”

Doximity operates a digital platform for medical professionals that’s likened to a LinkedIn for doctors. But users can do greater than just network and skim news on Doximity, as the corporate also offers telehealth tools like voice and video calling.

With the corporate having some skin in the sport, Doximity released a report on Tuesday outlining the state of telemedicine within the U.S. and its role in healthcare delivery. In August, 1,171 telemedicine users amongst doctors and 131 telemedicine users amongst nurses were surveyed.

More than 77% of physicians surveyed said they use telemedicine weekly, and 35% said they’ve integrated the technology into their each day clinical practice. Nearly 90% of nurses reported using telehealth weekly and 52% achieve this each day.

“The strong physician support of telemedicine underscores its increasing role in modern healthcare and has the potential to transform the way healthcare is delivered in the coming years,” Doximity said.

Additionally, about two-thirds of physicians said telemedicine of their practices had led to “improved patient outcomes,” particularly amongst neurologists, endocrinologists and rheumatologists. Doximity found that endocrinologists, urologists, gastroenterologists, rheumatologists and neurologists were the most certainly to make use of the technology.

The commonest use of telemedicine in clinical practice is follow-up visits, as 84% of physicians reported using the technology to conduct these appointments. Next, 60% of physicians said they use telemedicine for medication management, 57% said they use it to debate lab reports or test results with patients, and 52% said they use it to maintain patients informed to assist manage chronic illnesses.

Half of physicians surveyed said telemedicine had improved patient adherence to treatment plans, in comparison with 37% last yr.

SAN JOSE — Major developer PG&E and top San Jose officials are eyeing green residential towers and data centers to pave the best way for innovations that may create green energy downtown.

Westbank, a mega-developer with global reach, has begun discussing proposals with planners in San Jose to construct residential tower and data center projects that will work together to provide green energy for the high-rise residential buildings that might rise in the town Downtown.

These ambitious proposals come at a time when PG&E is engaging with technology corporations and other corporations about how the energy giant can boost the production and delivery of additional and reliable energy sources to strengthen Silicon Valley's economy.

The idea of placing apartments next to data centers that may generate energy, in addition to technology information centers, is becoming certainly one of the components of the grand strategy for a green downtown of San Jose and Silicon Valley, each of that are expected to make use of far more electricity.

“Ultimately, our housing portfolio in downtown San Jose will be over 4,000 units,” Andrew Jacobson, U.S. vice chairman for West Bank, said in an interview with this news organization.

At least two of those projects include a stand-alone data center that will probably be built adjoining to the residential buildings and can provide the homes with excess heat from the technology center that will otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

“Our focus will be primarily on the production of residential buildings and units in downtown San Jose, with a strong focus on the sustainability of these units,” Jacobson said.

San Jose is moving forward with what the town calls the Innovative Project Pathway Program, which makes it easier to construct projects downtown even when the proposed development doesn't quite align with zoning for a site, in accordance with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan.

“We created the Innovative Project Pathway program to encourage the market to imagine viable projects that will improve the quality of life in San Jose and increase community benefits,” Mayor Mahan said in an interview with this news organization.

San Jose's modern development program is designed to advertise creative, high-density mixed-use residential, office, retail and entertainment projects. In this case, the creative twist is a knowledge center to enhance the green energy elements of the adjoining residential buildings.

“Westbank’s proposal is exciting because it addresses two of our biggest challenges in the same project: housing and energy conservation,” Mahan said. “This can be a net-zero energy project by using the computing power in the data center and then capturing excess heat to use to heat the neighboring high-rise developments.”

Here are the downtown San Jose projects that might put data centers next to residential towers in-built the West Bank:

— Orchard Residential on land often called the Valley Title site. Westbank's current proposal calls for 3 30-story residential towers that will add as much as 1,147 residential units in downtown San Jose's trendy SoFA neighborhood. The addresses are 300 South First Street and 345 South Second Street, with a further frontage on East San Carlos Street.

— Terraine, a 17-story, 345-apartment tower at 323 Terraine Street.

“We are the first major city in the country to commit to being carbon neutral by 2030,” Mahan said. “We are innovative pioneers.”

Coincidentally, PG&E is hosting an event called “PG&E Innovation Summit 2024” in downtown San Jose. PG&E CEO Patricia Poppe, Mayor Mahan and a number of other PG&E executives are among the many speakers on the daylong meeting.

How do data centers fit into this? Data centers require plenty of power to operate and use cooling towers to stop equipment and electronics from overheating. Excess heat is commonly released into the air and wasted.

Experts are on the lookout for ways to utilize the surplus heat from the info center process.

“An underutilized option is reusing waste heat to heat other facilities,” says a post on the Heat Exchanger website.

That's the approach Westbank is considering for the Terraine and Orchard Residential towers in downtown San Jose.

“Our long-term vision is to create multiple data centers and residential clusters. The idea is to connect them all together and create an energy system for the downtown San Jose district,” said Westbank manager Jacobson. “If we can harness low-cost, low-carbon energy, that opens up a huge opportunity for downtown.”

Canada-based Westbank has proposed several projects in downtown San Jose, a vision that originally placed more emphasis on office towers than housing.

Huge demand for housing combined with the collapse of the office market, undermined by the tech industry's slowing demand for jobs, led Westbank to change to residential towers in locations where high-rise office buildings had previously been planned.

“What we need is a thriving downtown San Jose,” Jacobson said. “San Jose has a great downtown. All that is missing is for more people to live in the city center, and on a large scale. We want to promote housing construction. We want to do more than just start a project. We want to get a lot of housing projects off the ground.”

The data centers, in synergy with adjoining residential buildings, would make West Bank's downtown San Jose projects more energy efficient – and a more attractive bet for financing real estate developments.

“We’re very confident in downtown San Jose,” Jacobson said. “It has great infrastructure, fantastic restaurants, bars and entertainment options. What’s missing from downtown San Jose is housing at scale.”

They was generally known as big plays. Or possibly long plays. It's not clear when or why football people began calling them “explosive plays” or simply “explosives.” It was probably across the time football people began calling position groups “rooms.”

Football people also cannot agree on what constitutes an explosive play, because there is no such thing as a official definition: some use 15-yard runs and 20-yard passes. Others use fewer.

“People tend to manipulate them in a way that is most beneficial to them,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said last 12 months.

However, there may be a growing consensus that one statistic may be very vital: Explosive play marginso whoever has more in a game is a powerful indicator of who will win the sport. Maybe it's all the time been that way, possibly it means more on this era of upper scoring and more passing, which implies the bend-but-don't-break defenses have the upper hand and the ground-and-pound offense doesn't.

Georgia's survival at Kentucky is a primary example: Kentucky outgained Georgia (284-262) and had a great running game within the second half. But in that crucial second half — with explosive plays defined as runs of 12+ yards and passes of 16+ yards — Georgia had five explosive plays (three passes, two runs) to Kentucky's one, as Georgia's defense gave way but tightened up when needed.

This is only one example from this season, where the info – as in previous seasons – continues to indicate that explosive margin is a key factor:

2024 (to this point)

In SEC games (conference or non-conference), the team with the explosive game margin has a record of 32-2.

The biggest exception is Arkansas, which was plus-15 in its time beyond regulation loss to Oklahoma State, where the Razorbacks blew an enormous lead and were hurt by penalties (seven for 70 yards) and turnovers (minus two). The other exception was Vanderbilt (nine explosive points) in its five-point loss to Georgia State (eight explosive points).

When the lead is even or close in explosive games, teams give one another a likelihood. But the more serious it gets, the harder it gets. Here's a breakdown by lead, via TruMedia:

+10 or higher: 10-1

+5 to +9: 13-0

+1 to +4: 9-1

Tie: 1-2

-1 to -4: 3-4

-5 to -9: 0-3

-10 or worse: 0-1

Cumulatively, the info is comparable. There are three SEC teams with losing records, and people three are in the underside 4 in the general range for explosive play. The only SEC team with a negative margin and a winning record is LSU, which recorded minus-10 points in its opening loss to USC but plus-5 points in its win at South Carolina.

Recent season history

Between 2019 and 2023, SEC teams that had more explosive plays than their opponents posted a combined record of 397-72. And the larger the margin in that game, the more likely they were to win, in line with TruMedia:

+10 or higher: 52-2 (.963)

+5 to +9: 153-9 (.944)

+1 to +4: 193-61 (.760)

Tie: 42-38 (.525)

-1 to -4: 62-145 (.300)

-5 to -9: 10-87 (.103)

-10 or worse: 2-16 (.111)

(It needs to be noted that 4 of the 12 losses by teams with a margin of 5 or more occurred in the course of the 2020 COVID-19 season.)

Cumulatively, the five SEC champions – and 6 College Football Playoff participants, including Georgia in 2021 – each averaged 3.5 more explosive plays than their opponents. The 4 SEC teams that won the national title during that point each averaged at the least 4 more explosive plays than their opponents.

Do you win championships by defending? No, you win them by making explosive plays.

The reason for the info

Three-and-outs are great, but they're not obligatory they usually're also much harder to realize than they was: According to TruMedia, the speed of three-and-outs forced by the SEC defense has dropped, from 35.5 percent of drives in 2004 to 31.5 percent in 2014 to 27.8 percent 12 months up to now.

But the defense, which forces the offense to remain on the sphere longer and thereby increases the likelihood of errors, creates higher opportunities for itself.

Georgia's defense hasn't allowed a touchdown in its last 4 games, and within the season opener, Clemson was capable of make three or fewer plays on six of its 11 possessions. But on Saturday night, Kentucky had only one three-and-out on its 10 offenses. The greater problem was that the Wildcats were prevented from entering into the red zone on all but one possession.

On the opposite side of the ball, offenses which might be making greater chunk plays are reducing their possibilities of making mistakes. Time of possession has due to this fact change into much less meaningful: Ole Miss (28 minutes, 55 seconds), Alabama (29:10) and Georgia (29:42) have all averaged less time of possession than their opponents to this point. Tennessee (30:48) and Texas (30:21) are barely above the mark.

It's an era of scoring more points, and coaches would slightly rating points than long drives that only yield three points. Turnover differential still matters, as does field position and another traditional aspects. But differential on explosive plays is the factor that tells the story best.

Plastic waste is accumulating worldwide at an alarming rate. The World Bank estimates that one and all on the planet produces a median 0.74 kilograms of plastic waste per day.

To stem this influx, 175 countries Negotiation of a binding international treaty against plastic pollution, with a completion goal of the top of 2024. In July 2024, the Biden administration published the first US plan to resolve this problem.

The recent U.S. strategy covers five areas: plastics production, product design, waste generation, waste management, and plastic capture and removal. It also lists actions that federal agencies and departments are currently pursuing.

I study Environmental lawincluding Efforts to scale back plastic pollution. As the world's largest economy, the U.S. is a critical player on this effort. Based on my research, listed here are three proposals within the U.S. plan that I believe are necessary, and one omission that I consider a serious gap.

As of mid-2024, many key points of the worldwide plastics deal remained unresolved, including whether to limit plastics production.

A nationwide standard for measuring microplastics

Studies have found tiny plastic fragments, so-called microplastic particles, in environments equivalent to the atmosphere, Drinking water sources, wild animals And human food chains.

While scientists have found that wildlife, equivalent to seabirds, may be harmed by eating plastic, Effects on human health are less clearUnlike other pollutants, microplastic particles have different effects depending on their size. their shape and where they occur, equivalent to in food, air or water. And people may be exposed to them through many alternative waysincluding inhalation, ingestion and make contact with.

There is not any federal standard for measuring microplastics in numerous media equivalent to water and soil, so studies lack standardized definitions, methods and reporting techniques. In 2023, California launched a Microplastics monitoring programincluding the event of a standardized method for measuring microplastics in drinking water.

The Biden administration's plan calls for developing standardized methods to detect, quantify and characterize microplastics and nanoplastics, that are even smaller. This will help scientists generate consistent data which regulators can use to set limits for microplastics in food, water and air.

Extended producer responsibility

All plastics contain chemicals that give them properties equivalent to strength, softness, color and fire resistance. A subset of those chemicals, including Bisphenols and phthalateshave been related to antagonistic health effects, including fetal abnormalities, reproductive health problems and cancer.

Some scientists argue that certain forms of plastic waste with particularly harmful ingredients or properties, including PVC, polystyrene, polyurethane and polycarbonate, classified as hazardous wasteCurrently, the United States, Europe, Australia and Japan consider items made out of these plastics as solid waste and treat them in the identical way as leftover food from the kitchen or used office paper.

The incontrovertible fact that only about 5% of US plastic waste is currently recycledof which 9% is incinerated and 86% is disposed of in landfills, has led to calls for some responsibility to be given to plastics producers.

Expanded producer responsibility lawsthat apply to other products, equivalent to paints and electronics, require manufacturers to gather and eliminate their products or to bear a part of the prices of disposing of this waste. Such requirements give manufacturers an incentive to supply more environmentally friendly products and to advertise recycling.

From mid-2024 California, Colorado, Maine and Oregon have passed laws on prolonged producer responsibility for plastic waste, and a couple of dozen other states are considering similar measures. Studies show that when such policies are adopted, Recycling rates are increasing.

The Biden administration's plan calls for the creation of a national prolonged producer responsibility initiative that may allow state, local and tribal governments to develop their very own approaches while providing a vision for a harmonized national system and goals for managing plastic waste. Federal support could help more jurisdictions adopt rules requiring manufacturers to take part in managing that waste.

Mr. Trash Wheel is one in all 4 solar-powered waterwheels which have removed tons of of tons of plastic bottles and other trash from the Port of Baltimore, Maryland.

Ban on single-use plastic

Bans on plastic items are a method of reducing waste generation. Most of those measures concern items which can be used once after which thrown away, equivalent to shopping bags, food packaging and plastic bottles. Such items are probably the most common plastics within the environment.

The U.S. plan calls for the event of strategies to “replace, reduce, and phase out the federal government’s unnecessary use and purchase of plastic products,” including an end to the acquisition of single-use plastic items by 2035. Although this measure only applies to make use of by federal agencies, the U.S. government is the largest single buyer of products and services worldwideso this step generally is a strong signal for alternative products.

Limiting plastic production

Current forecasts assume that global plastics production double by 2040with a concomitant increase in plastic waste. In response, 66 countries have Coalition with high ambitionsco-chaired by Norway and Rwanda to support stricter provisions in the worldwide plastics agreement. One of its key goals is to limit global plastics production.

In early 2024, several nations involved within the treaty negotiations proposed reducing global plastics production by 40% below 2025 levels by 2040. This concept remains to be under discussion.

Plastics manufacturers and corporations that depend on plastic argue that a production restriction drive up costs of all plastics. Instead the World Plastics Council call for measures to scale back the quantity of plastic waste, equivalent to using resins with a better recycled content and increasing recycling rates.

The US had not selected a cap on plastic production until mid-2024. However, in August, press reports said that the Biden administration would change its position and will support bordersincluding the creation of a worldwide list of chemicals to be restricted.

This is a giant change that I believe could encourage more countries to support restrictions on the production of latest plastics. Details will likely emerge as the ultimate round of negotiations, scheduled for November 2024 in Busan, South Korea, approaches. The plastics industry is firmly against limiting productionand Congress would wish to ratify a worldwide treaty to make its provisions binding on the United States. However, U.S. support could increase the possibilities of capping the ever-increasing flow of plastic into the worldwide economy.

This article has been updated to reflect reports that the Biden administration will support limiting future plastic production.

Novo Nordisk investors were unimpressed on Thursday by a critical Harvard report that linked weight-loss drugs to a rare eye disease.

Semaglutide, which is contained in weight-loss drugs equivalent to Ozempic and Wegovy from Novo Nordisk, could also be linked to an increased risk of a rare eye disease, in accordance with a study conducted by Harvard Medical School.

However, analysts said the trial results were “hardly groundbreaking.” Shares within the Danish pharmaceutical company were unchanged on Thursday, slipping in morning trade and rising 0.1 percent at 11:17 a.m. London time.

The Harvard report found that patients with type 2 diabetes or obesity who’re prescribed semaglutide have an increased risk of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) – a condition that may result in lack of vision in a single eye. Patients were diagnosed with the attention condition more often than those that weren’t prescribed the weight-loss drugs, the study found.

Although the research suggests “some connection” to a rare eye event, the standard of the evidence is “very low and the margin for error very high,” said Emmanuel Papadakis, an analyst at Deutsche Bank.

The worst-case scenario would likely be one other update to the warnings on drug labels, but that may “hardly be a groundbreaking change,” Papadakis said.

He added that Deutsche Bank generally views semaglutide drugs as “one of the lowest-risk classes of therapy in the history of the industry.”

A Novo Nordisk spokesman said the optic nerve disease NATIONAL will not be an “adverse reaction for the commercially available formulations of semaglutide,” in accordance with the approved labels. They added that there have been “important methodological limitations” of the study, equivalent to the “small number of people” with type 2 diabetes or obesity who were exposed to semaglutide and included within the study.

“Patient safety is Novo Nordisk’s highest priority and we take all reports of adverse reactions related to the use of our medicines very seriously,” the spokesman said.

The popularity of its blockbuster drugs has made Novo Nordisk the most useful company in Europe; its valuation last yr was higher than Denmark's entire gross domestic product.

Wegovy also has health advantages beyond weight reduction and blood sugar regulation. The Food and Drug Administration approved it in March to scale back the chance of heart disease.

However, the drugs have come under fire after some patients reported experiencing stomach paralysis and suicidal thoughts while taking the drugs. A study by researchers on the University of British Columbia found an increased risk of intestinal obstruction, a condition during which food is prevented from passing through the small or large intestine, and pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas.

The labels of the medicines already contain warnings about Pancreatitis And certain types of intestinal obstruction. A change in vision can also be listed as a possible side effect of each Ozempic and Wegovy.

The US study, published on Wednesday, analyzed data from 16,827 patients from December 2017 to November last yr. The researchers identified that further studies are needed to find out whether semaglutide causes the attention disease.

You can have seen advertisements promising that vision therapy or vision training – principally eye exercises – will eliminate the necessity for glasses.

These exercises include applying pressure to the attention or holding the palm of the hand, eye movement exercises, or straining to read through the use of glasses with the mistaken prescription to “train” the eyes.

As a Professor of ophthalmology – and as an ophthalmologist who has seen 1000’s of patients – I can inform you that no study up to now provides strong evidence that these exercises eliminate the necessity for glasses or offer significant long-term advantages. The science simply doesn’t exist.

A video introduction to how the human eye works.

What science says

The lack of evidence applies to virtually all eye diseases and conditions, including the common conditions like myopiaor nearsightedness, which refers to when near objects are clear but distant objects are blurred. This also applies to farsightedness – also called hyperopia – what happens when objects are clear in the gap but blurry up close. These eye exercises Help with presbyopiaor the necessity for reading glasses, which generally begins around age 40.

With presbyopia, the patient is neither nearsighted nor farsighted and doesn’t need glasses for distance vision. However, because the lens of the attention becomes stiffer over time, the attention has difficulty specializing in small print and smaller text. This decline will proceed as you become old – and with it the necessity for stronger reading glasses also increases.

Although some methods claim to scale back the necessity for reading glasses, there are little, if any, evidence of profit.

However, there are some things everyone can do to keep up eye health:

In children, an excessive amount of screen time and close-up reading can contribute to myopia.
Rebecca Nelson/The Image Bank via Getty Images

Visual development in children

All children should a basic eye examination in infancy and nevertheless between 6 and 12 months of age. A 3rd examination needs to be performed between 1 and three years of age, after which a more detailed examination between 3 and 5 years of age to find out eye misalignment, eye health, and the possible need for glasses.

Failure to correct eye misalignment or to supply glasses to a toddler who needs glasses can lead to abnormal vision development. or amblyopiai.e. a weak, lazy eye.

The progression of myopia in children could be slowed by taking breaks and avoiding hours of on the phone or computerLimiting the period of time spent reading up close outside of faculty—whether on a screen or otherwise—may help slow the progression of myopia in children.

Longer screen time can cause eye strain and dryness. I suggest following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look 20 feet away out of your device. Focus on relaxing your eyes and blinking. Occasional use of artificial tears, available over-the-counter at drugstores, can assist with dry eyes.

Spend more time outdoors is nice in your eyes. It has been related to a lower incidence of myopia in childhood. A warning: Staring directly on the sun, even briefly, is dangerous and could cause everlasting damage to the retina.

Blue light blockers and dietary supplements

Advertisements for blue light filtering glasses claim they prevent headaches and eye fatigue and improve sleep. However, some studies, including a big randomized control trial, have found that blue light filtering glasses didn’t change the symptoms of eye strain. In addition, there is proscribed evidence that these glasses circadian rhythm.

Be cautious of any supplements or natural remedies that claim to be a cure-all for any eye condition. These claims should not supported by rigorous scientific evidence, and there isn’t any proof that they improve vision, Suspended particles or eliminate the necessity for glasses. The same applies to claims that essential oils or other topical substances can improve vision.

While omega-3 fatty acids have already been touted as a treatment for dry eye symptoms, there are no strong evidence that they assistalthough this doesn’t detract from its many other health advantages.

A study showed that the progression of intermediate age-related macular degeneration slowed in some patients after taking over-the-counter vitamins, particularly the AREDS2 formula. However, these vitamins weren’t useful in patients with early or no signs of the disease.

What works

Vision therapy could also be advisable for some eye conditions, reminiscent of misalignment of the eyes and problems converging on near objects, which may result in symptoms reminiscent of Diplopia or “double vision”.” Ultimately, these complaints are best treated by your eye doctor and don’t have anything to do with the necessity for reading or distance glasses.

For general eye health, a weight loss program wealthy in vegetables and other healthy foods could be helpful reduce the occurrence of some eye diseasesSome studies also show that physical activity is related to a discount in the chance of Development of glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration.

Cigarette smoking is related to several eye diseases, including age-related macular degenerationsubsequently it will be important to quit or avoid smoking.

And finally, don’t rub your eyes, as this may cause further irritation. Removing makeup within the evening will help minimize eyelid irritation. And Do stay awake with contact lenses in – It could cause corneal inflammation and other conditions that may damage your vision.

When journalists raised the alarm in early May 2024 that greater than 100 extremist militia groups Although militias had organized and communicated on Facebook, it was not the primary time that they’d attracted attention with their online activities.

As a Militias ScholarI actually have seen extremists being kicked off Facebook.

This time the moderators of the platform around 100 pages and profiles removed for violating the principles of the social network, which prohibit: “militarized social movements.”

These organizations include U.S. militias, typically groups of armed individuals who meet frequently for goal practice and discussions on cultural and political issues. They also take personal responsibility for defending their communities and country from a wide range of potential threats.

Some militias are attempting to defend themselves against the federal government, while others are preparing to attack. But all are committed to protecting Second Amendment rights and imagine they’re protecting democracy from the tyranny of presidency that will otherwise don’t have any control over them.

The 100 groups that were recently removed are only a small fraction of the hundreds of militia groups that Facebook previously thrown from the side, allegedly permanently. Nevertheless, there may be cause for concern that militias seem like attempting to reclaim the platform to network, recruit members and publicise their activities.

Caught unprepared

In the months leading as much as the 2020 presidential election, Facebook blocked and removed the Facebook profiles and pages of about 10,000 militia groups and militiamen. The company completely deleted the groups' comments and interactions, even on topics unrelated to militia activities.

For scientists like meit was a scary time. When I went on Facebook, it gave the look of these people and organizations had never existed. I had studied them for many years and so they had simply disappeared – even from the pages I had created to watch their activities.

Facebook has long been the first place on the Internet where militias chat with other militias, find out about their preferred tools and techniques, and in some cases Planning acts of violence. Most militia groups on the time had publicly accessible pages for his or her units and openly discussed a lot of their actions. However, essentially the most nefarious groups operated behind private or invitation-only groups that researchers and law enforcement didn’t all the time have access to.

Militias wish to think they’re prepared for each eventuality, be it a natural disaster, an invasion by foreign governments or a more mundane emergency like a automobile crash. But it seems that the majority of those groups had no meaningful contingency plan for what they’d do in the event that they lost access to Facebook, the social network where most of them were most energetic.

Some members tried to regroup on various other platforms, but and not using a clear plan to achieve this, they struggled to reconnect with one another after Facebook suspended their profiles. This motion, which scholars call “deplatforming,” was, for my part, by far essentially the most disruptive event within the history of the militia movement since it dramatically and quickly disrupted the movement's ability to coordinate across state lines.

An opportunity for radicalization

Deplatforming can have downsides, too. People who’re most indignant about perceived government actions or cultural conditions are those most motivated to search out one another online. So Facebook was a gathering point and meeting place for these people, increasing opportunities for people to grow to be radicalized and potentially violent.

Since they were expelled from Facebook and other platformsa lot of them have moved to platforms which are harder for researchers and police to watch for clues about recent threats. That's a drawback.

Moreover, the experience of being banned from Facebook can have been a radicalizing moment for some. Some militia members I follow interpreted their exclusion from the platform as further proof of their perceived oppression. Some of them argued that it was a violation of their First Amendment rights—although private corporations will not be held to those legal standards.

My research also revealed that a lot of these militia members never actually left Facebook. I personally observed them opening recent accounts almost immediately, and so they only appeared to be blocked from doing so in the event that they used the name or email address related to their previous account that had been faraway from the platform.

These people hide behind different names and email addresses but have remained energetic on Facebook since 2020. Most of those that avoided everlasting bans by changing their names will not be amongst those kicked out within the recent purge. So far, they’ve chosen to remain under the radar moderately than openly admit their militia affiliation.

Comfort in public

The groups which have reclaimed their militia identities on Facebook appear to incorporate previously banned groups, a few of which use their former unit names and a few of which have renamed themselves, in addition to recent groups with individuals who had not publicly identified themselves as militia members before the 2020 purge.

The undeniable fact that groups were openly operating with military-related names on Facebook in 2024 means they’re testing the platform's moderation efforts. And it's an indication that they're becoming increasingly comfortable as visible, public entities.

And this despite the increasing public attention that followed criminal convictions of militia members for his or her involvement within the January 6, 2021 riot and in a 2020 militia plot to kidnap the governor of Michigan.

These apparent militia efforts to reclaim Facebook as a semi-public platform are just like militia efforts in places like Virginia to openly organize, recruit, and take part in politics. Together, they function a reminder that the elemental concerns and beliefs of militia members haven’t disappeared over the past 4 years, but moderately are ready for potential calls to motion because the 2024 election season continues.

During his time in office, President Donald Trump frequently appealed to the fears shared by militia members. His actions included direct calls to the Proud Boys to “step back and stand by“and more subtle but still derogatory remarks about immigrants, transgender people, and other perceived threats to American culture. The militia's efforts to re-enter the general public consciousness suggest that its members sense each a way of legitimacy and a necessity for motion with the 2024 election looming.

While researchers like me don’t currently anticipate one other major event just like the Capitol breach, we’re very concerned in regards to the potential coordination of policies on the state and native levels, especially those directly related to the electoral process and results.

With the July 4 election looming, it could possibly feel just like the final result is already a done deal. Labour has had a decisive lead within the polls for over a 12 months, and nothing Rishi Sunak does seems to vary that.

But beneath the surface, there continues to be rather a lot at stake on this six-week election campaign.

First of all, there isn’t a final result possible from this election campaign that may not be described as monumental. If Keir Starmer wins, he could have pulled off essentially the most astonishing electoral turnaround of all time, bringing Labour back to power for the primary time in 14 years. If Rishi Sunak wins, he’ll practically defy gravity.

In Scotland, the SNP's dominance could turn into total annihilation. In Wales, border changes have dramatically altered the electoral map. In Northern Ireland, the DUP is heading into its first real post-Brexit election amid crisis following the arrest of its former leader – while Sinn Féin is regaining popularity.

So Labour’s huge lead within the polls is definitely only a part of the story.

Here at The Conversation, a charity, we’re committed to providing our readers with trustworthy, evidence-based journalism. Over the approaching weeks, we are going to bring you in-depth evaluation of the campaign's developments and fact-check the claims being made.
