According to the Park City Professional Ski Patrol Association, which represents 200 employees on the nation's largest ski area, the brand new contract, which is able to remain in effect through 2027, offers entry-level ski patrollers and mountain safety employees a starting salary of $23 an hour.

Experienced ski patrol members earn an extra $4 an hour on average, the union said.

“The tentative agreement meets the interests of both parties and will end the current strike,” the resort and union said in a Thursday joint statement. “Everyone looks forward to restoring normal resort operations.”

Ski patrol members conduct mountain safety operations, reminiscent of avalanche control, and reply to medical emergencies.

The sides negotiated for eight months before the union began its strike on December 27. During the strike, the resort's capability was limited, upsetting a whole lot of guests who traveled long distances with their families.

Minnesota resident Peter Nystrom said he spent greater than $20,000 to send his family of eight to the resort, only to learn of the strike, three-hour lines at ski lifts and potentially unsafe mountain conditions.

“We thought it would be a fun Christmas present to do a once-in-a-lifetime ski trip like this,” Nystrom told NBC News. “The really frustrating thing was just the lack of transparency.

Park City continued his website City officials said they were “pleased that the patrol officer strike has ended and look forward to welcoming our patrol officers back,” adding that more land would turn out to be available soon.

California will increase rebates for electric vehicles if President-elect Donald Trump eliminates the $7,500 tax credit, Gov. Gavin Newsom says.

California had a zero-emission vehicle rebate from 2010 to 2023. It began with a direct rebate of $5,000 for battery electric vehicles, which eventually increased to $7,500.

Critics have already argued that California's budget is tight and adding more spending isn't ideal. California is nonpartisan Finance and political officer recently warned that the state budget doesn’t have the capability for brand spanking new commitments.

Q: Should California offer its own electric vehicle rebate if the federal tax credit goes away?

James Hamilton, UC San Diego

NO: A $7,500 subsidy would cut back the fee of an electrical automotive by 15%, which may lead to a 15% increase within the number of electrical cars sold. That implies that for each $7,500 California would pay to get someone to change to electric cars, we can be paying $50,000 in subsidies to individuals who would have bought an electrical automotive anyway. Most of those buyers are wealthier than the common Californian. We should promote electric cars, but the prices outweigh the advantages here.

Norm Miller, University of San Diego

NO: While I benefited from each federal tax credits and California rebates in 2012, I don't think it is smart for a single state to try to switch demand-stimulating tax credits or to select and select amongst industry competitors who deserves help and who doesn't. I would favor that our government(s) support primary and sometimes dangerous research in university labs to advance the cutting-edge, but not pick winners or distort market demand.

David Ely, San Diego State University

NO: The latest fiscal outlook report from the Legislative Analyst Office finds the 2025-26 budget is roughly balanced, due partially to tax revenue growth driven by the stock rally relatively than the strength of the general economy. As a result, the budget lacks the capability to fund latest programs reminiscent of a revived federal rebate program. Even a rebate program that excludes popular Tesla vehicles, just like the one the governor is considering, could have limited impact on electric vehicle purchases.

Caroline Freund, UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy

NO:Electric vehicle tax credits are an expensive and unfair strategy to reduce emissions. The profit primarily advantages wealthier residents who can afford latest cars and have access to charging stations. Taxing fuel (and carbon emissions more generally) and redistributing revenue to essentially the most vulnerable can be more efficient and revenue-neutral. Given the big budget deficit, offering a California-only rebate for electric vehicles can be particularly problematic now. To the extent that the goal is to create jobs, there isn’t any guarantee that those jobs can be local.

Kelly Cunningham, San Diego Institute for Economic Research

NO: Subsidies impose disproportionate costs on lower-income consumers to be able to profit higher-income users. Electric vehicles needs to be feasible without requiring taxpayers to subsidize wealthy users who can afford the prices. Zero-emission vehicles are only as clean as the facility sources they’re connected to. The increase is predicted to exceed emissions from newer combustion engine vehicles. In any case, California, already facing double-digit operating deficits, is unable to soak up additional costs in the approaching years.

Alan Gin, University of San Diego

YES: The marketplace for electric vehicles is important and can remain so in the longer term. The electric vehicle tax credit is essential to maintaining competition on this market. The $7,500 discount has allowed other manufacturers to capture Tesla's market share, and eliminating the discount will allow Tesla to proceed its dominance. For this reason, Elon Musk believes that eliminating the discount can be a long-term profit for the corporate, even when it could have a negative impact on sales within the short term.

Chris Van Gorder, Scripps Health

NO: Last time I checked, California had a budget deficit and expects to have one other deficit next yr. This deficit resulted within the state not funding programs that were significantly more necessary to the general public good than providing reimbursement for the acquisition of an electrical vehicle. I imagine it can be crucial to prioritize using taxpayer dollars by specializing in current health and public safety needs reminiscent of health care, mental health, public safety, education and homelessness.

Jamie Moraga, Franklin Revere

NO: While I support rebates and credits for electric vehicles, I don't support them if the state budget can't afford it. California remains to be attempting to dig itself out of its $165 billion debacle starting in 2022. Adding in last month's budget outlook report released by the Legislative Analyst's Office, even the speaker of the California Legislature emphasized the necessity for fiscal restraint and warned against expanding programs or services in preparation for possible economic challenges. Now just isn’t the time to supply discounts.

Phil Blair, Manpower

YES: The environment may be very necessary to Californians. As the biggest economy within the United States, we must also do our part to support the problems we imagine in, despite the ultra-conservative initiatives of the incoming administration.

Gary London, London Moeder Advisors

NO: I’m an admitted hypocrite for receiving these tax credits. But since California plans to transition to electric cars by 2035, these cars can be purchased without tax credits. The larger incentive can be that the fee of those vehicles would fall. But that’s a tariff debate for an additional day. I like to recommend that the state deal with incentives to convert gas stations to electric stations, as refueling is the larger barrier.

Bob Rauch, RA Rauch & Associates

NO: California's economy has been experiencing a downturn for nearly two years. Inflation and sluggish private employment growth have led to weak consumer spending. Outside of presidency and health care, the state has not created any jobs within the last 1 1/2 years. High taxes, increased minimum wage and climate regulations, and other progressive policies have contributed to California's economic woes and left the state budget unable to accommodate latest commitments.

Haney Hong, San Diego County Taxpayers Association.

NO: California has already intervened in the electrical vehicle market starting in 2035, requiring all latest electric vehicles to be electric by then. So a government credit for electric vehicles is just overkill. And if California has money to spend—which, by the best way, it really doesn't—then why shouldn't we just put money into things that may profit everyone: relief from electricity and water rates, road repairs, or maintenance of public facilities?

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Republican Austin Theriault accomplished a recount of his congressional election in Maine on Wednesday and conceded to Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, ending the closely watched contest a month after Election Day.

Theriault decided to finish the recount before it was accomplished after initial results showed no significant change within the consequence after Golden won the state's ranked-choice voting by 2,706 votes.

“I ran this campaign that was about putting people over politics, and now it’s time to do that,” Theriault announced, calling the competition “an extremely close and hard-fought race.”

Between ranked-choice voting and the recount, the election was a lengthy process.

Golden won essentially the most primary votes, but fell in need of a majority by lower than 49% of the votes forged, as about 12,000 ballots were either blank or contained write-in candidates. This required one other round of voting wherein ballots were delivered to Augusta, entered right into a computer, and reallocated with the second ballots from ballots that were blank or had candidates listed on them.

The Associated Press declared Golden the winner of the 2nd Congressional District after the trial concluded, greater than every week after Election Day. The recount began on Monday.

“I would like to thank the voters for participating in the best democracy the world has ever seen, and all of the staff and volunteers who helped make sure the integrity of the election on Election Day, in the course of the runoff, and throughout this recount ,” he told Golden, who was in Washington when Theriault called for the concession on Wednesday.

This race attracted attention and generated greater than $50 million in spending as each parties battled for control of the House of Representatives.

Golden, a Marine Corps veteran willing to defy his own party, campaigned on his ability to work with each Democrats and Republicans. He also emphasized his commitment to the lobster industry, which is important to the region's economy. But Golden has come under attack for his opposition to assault weapons, which he announced after an Army reservist used an assault rifle to kill 18 people and wound 13 others in Lewiston in October 2023.

Theriault, a former NASCAR driver, had the support of President-elect Donald Trump but additionally portrayed himself as a possible unifier in a time of division. “We need more balance and less extremism in Washington,” Theriault previously said.

It was the third time Golden won in a further round of ranked voting. The system allows voters to rate the candidates on the ballot and allows for added rounds of voting to make sure a majority winner. Ranked-choice voting tables allowed Golden to unseat incumbent Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin in 2018 and win a rematch in 2022.

The days of spotty – or worse, no – Wi-Fi on planes are numbered, Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran said.

Reliable and fast Wi-Fi will likely be “ubiquitous” amongst full-service providers, he told Squawk Box Asia on Friday.

But not only any WiFi will do. As airlines compete to lure passengers with fast – and ideally free – web within the skies, SpaceX's Starlink services have gotten the most recent “it” product to have on board.

Air New Zealand announced in December 2023 that Starlink services can be installed on two domestic aircraft in late 2024. The service, which provides high-speed web via around 6,000 satellites, will allow passengers to stream videos and send quick messaging across multiple devices, the corporate said.

However, passengers may have to attend slightly longer for Air New Zealand to launch these services. Foran told CNBC on Friday that planned Starlink tests with its aircraft have been postponed until 2025.

“Early next year you will see Starlink operating on one of our turboprops and also on one of our jets,” he said. “We've tested it in a way, but now the next step is to actually get it on the plane and operational. And from there we can assess the rollout.”

On September 13, United Airlines announced that it had signed the industry's largest agreement to this point for Starlink services. The airline said testing will begin in 2025 and can eventually expand to its entire fleet – greater than 1,000 aircraft – over the subsequent few years.

Starlink will enable passengers to access fast, reliable web services around the globe, including in distant and once inaccessible areas equivalent to mid-ocean and polar regions.

“We have made great progress there,” he said. “We're well on our way… I think it's going to be a fantastic deal.”

Starlink is quickly becoming the popular web provider within the sky, with connectivity deals with major industrial airlines like Hawaiian Airlines and smaller carriers like JSX.

At the tip of September, Air France announced plans to roll out Starlink web services across its entire fleet from summer 2025.

In a press release, the French airline described the move as “a major step in its rise to market.”

SAN JOSE — Passenger travel through San Jose Mineta International Airport lost altitude in August, an indication of weakness for the summer travel season, a brand new report shows.

The San Jose airport handled 1.07 million passengers in August, down from July totals and lower than travel activity in the identical month last 12 months.

Passenger activity at San Jose Airport fell 2.1% in August from August 2024 and a couple of.6% from July, the previous month.

The numbers suggest the South Bay aviation hub continues to struggle to return to the altitude it once enjoyed before the coronavirus outbreak.

The latest statistics also suggest that passenger numbers on the airport can have peaked and should struggle to climb any higher.

Experts say business travel has not yet recovered from the coronavirus outbreak as a result of the proliferation of distant meetings resembling ubiquitous Zoom calls or Google Meet and chat.

The decline in business travel activity has hurt markets that depend on such travel within the Bay Area, including the tech-focused South Bay.

However, the South Bay attracts vacationers, particularly those in search of a convenient base for Monterey Bay or other Bay Area locations.

The activity on the San Jose airport is evident evidence of the present problems it faces in comparison with 2019, the last full 12 months before government-ordered shutdowns to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

In the 12 months ended August, San Jose Mineta International Airport handled 11.87 million passengers, a 24.2% decrease from 2019's record 15.65 million passengers.

The current one-year trend for air travel in San Jose suggests 2024 may very well be a weaker 12 months than 2023, when the airport handled 12.1 million passengers.

If there may be a decline throughout 2024, it might mark three straight years of increased airport activity in San Jose, following a collapse in passenger travel in 2020 following the collapse of worldwide travel and hotel markets.

However, the busy Thanksgiving weekend could boost travel from San Jose Airport in November, and the Christmas and New Year's travel seasons could drive a spike in travel in December.

New airline flights could also increase passenger activity in San Jose.

Over the summer, Frontier Airlines resumed service in San Jose with every day nonstop flights connecting the South Bay to Denver, San Diego, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Phoenix.

Quarterback Fernando Mendoza said there will likely be “no sulking” on the two,200-mile flight home from Tallahassee to the Bay Area following Cal's 14-9 loss to Florida State on Saturday night.

“Woulda, woulda, coulda … I feel terrible,” he said after the Bears (3-1) suffered their first lack of the season of their first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference game. “I could have done a lot more to help us win this game, the offense could have done a lot more. It hurts and it sucks, but we have to make sure we turn the tide.”

The Seminoles (1-3) avoided their fourth straight loss after ending 13-1 last 12 months and entered this season ranked No. 10 within the AP Top 25 rankings.

Cal has loads to do within the upcoming off week before facing No. 7 Miami on Oct. 5.

The offense was penalized for five false starts before the snap. Kicker Ryan Coe made three field goals, including a 51-yarder that gave the Bears a 9-7 lead late within the third quarter, but he also missed from 36 and 38 yards within the second half.

The defense held the opponent to not more than 14 points for the fourth time in a row, but allowed big plays at crucial moments. And the offense couldn’t rating a touchdown despite the return of the healthy Jaydn Ott (16 carries, 73 yards).

“When you play against a team like Florida State with so much talent, you don't make mistakes like that and you still win,” said Cal coach Justin Wilcox. “We had a lot of chances. We didn't take advantage of them.”

Here are the takeaways from Cal’s first lack of the season:

Mendoza's big numbers

Returning to his home state, Mendoza played in front of family and friends, completing 22 of 36 passes for a career-high 303 yards. His 26-yard run on third down kept a late-game offense alive that gave the Bears a probability.

But in the ultimate minute, on third-and-16, he threw an incomplete pass to Trond Grizzell from the 23-yard line and was then sacked for the seventh time, ending the Bears' possibilities.

“We have to throw the ball. We can't eat the sack,” Wilcox said.

“I would rather have the worst stats in the world and win this game,” Mendoza said. “When we got into the red zone, we shot ourselves in the foot. A big minus for me.”

Problems before the snap

The Bears proceed to have trouble snapping the ball with out a penalty flag being waved.

“We have to start the game offensively without getting penalized. That's bad football,” Wilcox said.

When asked to what extent crowd noise contributed to the issue, Wilcox said the Bears had practiced with pre-rehearsed crowd noise.

“The neighbors hate it,” he said. “And obviously the message isn't getting through. We're not communicating it well enough and executing it well enough. That's unacceptable. That's going to be addressed until we get it right.”

Field Goal Adventure

Coe, who got here to Cal this season after successful stints at North Carolina, Cincinnati and Delaware, has missed six of his 11 field goal attempts.

Wilcox suggested that others may very well be given the prospect to compete for the kicker's job in the course of the off week.

“We'll discuss every position,” Wilcox said. “He's got a lot of talent and was really impressive in practice. He hit the 51-yarder like it was nothing and then missed from 36 and 38 yards.”

The Vatican's shock moment

Junior offensive guard Sioape Vatikani, who missed the primary three games with a foot injury, returned to the lineup but went down late within the third quarter after colliding with an FSU defender and remained on the bottom for about 10 minutes.

He was strapped to a board that immobilized his head, loaded onto a cart and driven out of the stadium. Before he left, Vatikani raised his arm and gave the fans a thumbs up.

Wilcox said Vatikani was being evaluated at an area hospital and was capable of move his extremities. “That's good news,” he said, “but that's all I know.”

Next

The Bears promise there will likely be no hangover after the loss.

“We should have won this game,” said linebacker Cade Uluave, who had 11 tackles. “But it's over. Now we're looking forward.”

Mendoza said the loss could make the Bears a greater team as they prepare for Miami.

“We may have thrown a punch,” he said. “We're going to come back and uppercut them.”
