According to a press release from Oakley Police, 11 men were arrested on suspicion of using the Internet to locate children and sexually exploit and abuse them.

Of the 11 arrests, two men were from Pittsburg, two from Concord, two from Antioch and two from Hayward. Other suspects were from Oakley, Oakland and South San Francisco. All suspects were taken to jail.

Police arrested them after discovering that the boys had allegedly engaged in inappropriate and sexually motivated relationships with people they believed to be children. Each of the boys was arrested after attempting to satisfy with their intended goal at an agreed meeting point. Some of the boys brought candy or contraceptives with them.

The operation was conducted between May 24 and May 31 with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which included multiple agencies, including the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Secret Service, several local police departments, and the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office and District Attorney's Office.

“I have always valued proactive, mission-oriented operations. This operation, in my opinion, is one of the most important proactive, mission-oriented operations,” said Oakley Police Chief Paul Beard. “Literally, the innocence of children was saved by the efforts made in this operation. Knowing some of the histories that led to these arrests, I feel a deep sense of disgust for the men who were arrested.”

If anyone has details about these arrests or other cases of kid sexual abuse and exploitation, they will contact Oakley Police at 925-625-8855. For those needing resources on this topic, the Greater Bay Area Child Abuse Prevention Council Coalition has been working to coordinate resources and advocate for public policy for over 30 years.

Antioch police arrested 11 people after town was hit by an “unprecedented” variety of carnival rides screeching tires on Saturday, Mayor Lamar Hernandez-Thorpe said.

Ten sideshows – events that typically feature young people smoking tires and performing driving stunts in souped-up cars surrounded by cheering crowds blocking streets or intersections – took place in Antioch after 2 p.m. Saturday, Hernandez-Thorpe said in a Facebook video posted around 10 p.m. Saturday.

“It's very disappointing,” Thorpe said. “It's unfortunate to see so many young people wandering around these streets.”

The mayor promised that the drivers and a few of their parents could be held accountable.

By early Sunday afternoon, 11 people had been arrested for attending a good or possessing stolen cars, the mayor said in a second Facebook post. Two stolen vehicles had been seized and 6 cars had been impounded, he said.

Hernandez-Thorpe said he expects more arrests.

Antioch has installed security cameras and automatic license plate readers. After a big fireworks sideshow blocked an intersection in April, Hernandez-Thorpe said police used drones to capture images of license plates.

The mayor also took aim on the parents of the sideshow participants on Saturday. “In many of these cases, the cars are registered to parents, so when we finally find you and hold you accountable for these actions, you will also have to pay heavy fines,” he said.

The California Highway Patrol helps Antioch crack down on the events, which Hernandez-Thorpe said have the potential to affect public safety because they eat police resources. “You may see helicopters over the city of Antioch … as we continue to crack down on these sideshows,” he said.

“Nobody is immune. I got several calls today from my neighbors telling me about a sideshow that was taking place… at my house.”

In February, the Antioch City Council unanimously passed on first reading an ordinance that might impose fines of as much as $1,000 and as much as six months in jail for organizing or promoting illegal street racing, carnival parades and reckless driving events. But on second reading, which is often a formality, the brand new regulations were repealed.

Hernandez-Thorpe said Saturday's sideshows were an example of the importance of the regulation and announced he would reinstate it.

“It’s not fair that we have to live with such nonsense in our community,” he said.

Russia attacked a busy seaside resort on the outskirts of Ukraine's second-largest city on Sunday and in addition attacked villages in the encompassing region, killing at the least 11 people and wounding scores.

The rocket attacks were the most recent sustained Russian attacks in recent weeks on the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine Russian troops have launched an offensive.

Valentyna, 69, had blood running down her face within the lakefront resort area where her home and a busy restaurant nearby were destroyed. Her husband was killed by the water, she said, pointing to the realm near the shore where there was now a crater, debris and bodies.

“Losing my husband, losing my house, losing everything in the world, it hurts, it hurts me,” she cried through tears. “They (the Russians) are animals, why do they have to kill people?”

According to the general public prosecutor's office, six people were killed there, one continues to be missing and 27 were injured. Rescuers said the primary attack was followed by a second attack about 20 minutes later, targeting emergency responders on the scene in a so-called “double tap.”

“There were never soldiers here,” said Jaroslaw Trofimko, a police inspector who arrived after the primary attack after which became involved within the second strike. “It was a Sunday, people should be here to rest, children should be here, pregnant women should be here, resting and enjoying a normal life.”

Another five people were killed and nine injured later within the day in two villages in Kupiansk District. Local governor Oleh Syniehubov said Russian forces shelled two villages within the district with a self-propelled multiple rocket launcher.

President Volodymyr Zelensky again called on Western allies to equip Kiev with additional air defense systems to guard Kharkiv and other cities.

“The world can stop Russian terror – and to do so must overcome the lack of political will among leaders,” Zelensky said on Telegram.

“Two Patriots for Kharkiv will make a fundamental difference,” he said, referring to the Patriot missile defense systems. Air defense systems for other cities and sufficient support for soldiers on the front would ensure Russia's defeat, the president added
