<p>When you think that of electrical fields, you almost certainly consider electricity—the stuff that makes modern life possible, powering every part from household appliances to cell phones. Researchers have studied the principles of electricity <a href="https://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/electromag/timeline/index.html">because the seventeenth century</a>. <a href="https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Franklin/01-04-02-0135">Benjamin Franklin</a>famous for his kite experiment, proved that lightning was indeed electrical.</p>
<p>Electricity has also enabled major advances in biology. A way called <a href="https://kids.britannica.com/students/article/electrophoresis/322317">Electrophoresis</a> allows scientists to investigate the molecules of life – DNA and proteins – by separating them based on their electrical charge. In addition to being commonly taught in secondary school biology, electrophoresis is a workhorse of many clinical and research laboratories. <a href="https://www.microbioseplab.org/">including mine</a>.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m a <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=h-wdN4EAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Professor of Biomedical Engineering</a> who works with miniaturized electrophoretic systems. Together with my students, my students are developing portable versions of those devices that quickly detect pathogens and help researchers combat them.</p>

<h2>What is Electrophoresis?</h2>
<p>Researchers discovered electrophoresis <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cocis.2009.12.005">within the nineteenth century</a> by applying an electrical voltage to clay particles and watching them move through a layer of sand. After further advances within the twentieth century, electrophoresis became the usual in laboratories.</p>
<p>To understand how electrophoresis works, we first need to clarify it <a href="https://openstax.org/books/physics/pages/18-3-electric-field">electric fields</a>. These are invisible forces that electrically charged particles comparable to protons and electrons exert on one another. For example, a particle with a positive electrical charge could be drawn to a particle with a negative charge. The law “opposites attract” applies here. Molecules can even have a charge; Whether it&#8217;s more positive or negative will depend on the variety of atoms that compose it.</p>
<p>During electrophoresis, an electrical field is created between two electrodes connected to an influence supply. One electrode is positively charged and the opposite negatively charged. They are positioned on opposite sides of a container crammed with water and a few salt, which might conduct electricity.</p>
<p>When charged molecules comparable to DNA and proteins are present in water, the electrodes between them create a force field that pushes the charged particles toward the oppositely charged electrode. This process is named <a href="https://chem.libretexts.org/Bookshelves/Analytical_Chemistry/Analytical_Chemistry_2.1_(Harvey)/12%3A_Chromatographic_and_Electrophoretic_Methods/12.07%3A_Electrophoresis">electrophoretic migration</a>.</p>

<p>Researchers value electrophoresis since it is fast and versatile. Electrophoresis might help analyze several types of particles, from molecules to microbes. Additionally, electrophoresis might be performed using materials comparable to paper, gels, and thin tubes.</p>
<p>1972 physicist <a href="https://scholar.google.com.ua/citations?user=PjBXJKsAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Stanislav Duchin</a> and his colleagues observed one other variety of electrophoretic migration called <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/elps.200410408">nonlinear electrophoresis</a> This could separate particles based not only on their electrical charge, but additionally on their size and shape.</p>
<h2>Electric fields and pathogens</h2>
<p>Further advances in electrophoresis have made it a useful gizmo for combating pathogens. In particular, the microfluidics revolution has enabled the emergence of tiny laboratories that allow researchers to quickly detect pathogens.</p>
<p>In 1999, researchers found that these tiny electrophoresis systems could do that too <a href="https://doi.org/10.1021/ac990779z">Separate intact pathogens</a> by differences of their electrical charge. They placed a combination of several types of bacteria in a really thin glass capillary, which was then exposed to an electrical field. Some bacteria left the device faster than others attributable to their different electrical charges, allowing the microbes to be separated by type. By measuring their migration speed, scientists were in a position to discover each species of bacteria present within the sample in a process that took lower than 20 minutes.</p>
<p>Microfluidics has improved this process even further. Microfluidic devices are sufficiently small to slot in the palm of your hand. Their miniature size allows them to perform analyzes much faster than traditional laboratory equipment since the particles wouldn&#8217;t have to travel as far through the device for evaluation. This signifies that the molecules or pathogens researchers are in search of are easier to detect and fewer prone to be lost in evaluation.</p>

<p>For example, samples analyzed with traditional electrophoresis systems would must travel through capillary tubes roughly 11 to 31 inches (30 to 80 centimeters) long. Processing can take 40 to 50 minutes and shouldn&#8217;t be portable. In comparison, samples analyzed with <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.chroma.2014.11.034">tiny electrophoresis systems</a> migrate through microchannels which are just one to five centimeters long. This means small, portable devices with evaluation times of approx <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chroma.2014.11.034">two to a few minutes</a>. </p>
<p>Nonlinear electrophoresis has enabled more powerful devices by allowing researchers to separate and detect pathogens based on their size and shape. My lab colleagues and I even have shown that combining nonlinear electrophoresis with microfluidics shouldn&#8217;t be only possible <a href="https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.analchem.2c04366">separate several types of bacterial cells</a> but additionally <a href="https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.analchem.4c03336">live and dead bacterial cells</a>.  </p>
<h2>Tiny electrophoresis systems in medicine</h2>
<p>Microfluidic electrophoresis has the potential to be useful across industries. First and foremost, these small systems can replace traditional evaluation methods <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chroma.2014.11.034">faster results, more convenience and lower costs</a>.</p>
<p>For example when <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jpba.2018.06.033">Testing the effectiveness of antibiotics</a>These tiny devices could help researchers quickly detect whether pathogens are dead after treatment. It could also help doctors resolve which drug is best for a patient by quickly distinguishing between normal bacteria and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.</p>
<p>My lab can also be working on developing microelectrophoresis systems to purify bacteriophage viruses that might be used for this purpose <a href="https://doi.org/10.1146/annurev-med-080219-122208">Treatment of bacterial infections</a>. </p>
<p>As development continues, the facility of electrical fields and microfluidics can speed up how researchers can detect and combat pathogens.</p>

Microsoft has signed a 20-year contract to buy electricity generated by the plant to offset the facility needs of its data centers within the Mid-Atlantic region.</em>  </p>

<p>A final-minute proposal by California lawmakers to supply some relief for rising electricity bills has probably failed.</p>
<p><a href="https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB3121">Assembly Bill 3121</a> was pulled from a key Senate committee this afternoon. A source told CalMatters meaning it won&#39;t be voted on until the top of the legislative session on Saturday.</p>
<p>The bill&#39;s writer, Democrat Cottie Petrie-Norris of Irvine, removed it from the agenda of the Senate Permanent Committee on Energy, Utilities and Communications. Her office didn&#8217;t immediately reply to a request for comment.</p>
<p>The bill would have given households a small one-time credit of between $30 and $70. It would have been funded by controversial cuts totaling about $500 million to utility programs that support low-income residents and schools in areas served by Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas &#038; Electric and San Diego Gas &#038; Electric.</p>
<p>For weeks, state leaders and Governor Gavin Newsom&#39;s staff have been working on a series of proposals to handle California&#39;s dual clean energy problem: meeting requirements for clean, carbon-free electricity and lowering electricity prices, that are amongst the best within the country.</p>
<p>The measure was probably the most controversial in a series of energy measures unveiled earlier this week, with lawmakers and Newsom already significantly scaling back their plans to lower Californians&#39; electricity bills and speed up renewable energy projects.</p>
<p>The Petrie-Norris maneuver got here hours after House Speaker Robert Rivas, a Democrat from Salinas, expressed doubts about whether he would allow any of the measures to be put to a vote this yr.</p>

<p>Why isn&#39;t geothermal energy used as widely as wind or solar energy? <p>KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian attacks left greater than 100,000 households in northern Ukraine without electricity and a regional capital cut off from water supplies on Sunday night, Ukrainian authorities reported Saturday. The variety of civilian casualties rose sharply within the embattled east of the country.</p>
<p>The northern region of Sumy, which borders Russia, was plunged into darkness after Russian attacks damaged energy infrastructure late Friday, Ukraine&#39;s Energy Ministry said. Hours later, Ukrainian public broadcaster reported that Russian drones had attacked the provincial capital of Sumy, cutting off water supplies by hitting power lines that feed the pumping system.</p>
<p>Russian state agency RIA quoted a neighborhood pro-Kremlin &#8220;underground&#8221; leader as saying Moscow&#39;s forces overnight attacked a factory producing missile ammunition in the town, which had a population of over 256,000 before the war. The report didn&#8217;t specify which weapon was used and the claim couldn&#8217;t be independently verified. Explosions in the town occurred during an air raid alert early Saturday morning, in accordance with Ukrainian media reports.</p>
<p>In the eastern Donetsk region, Russian artillery shelling killed 11 civilians and wounded 43 on Friday and overnight, the region&#39;s governor, Vadym Filashkin, reported on Saturday. Five people died within the town of Selydove, southeast of Pokrovsk, the eastern city that has turn out to be a flashpoint on the front lines. Ukraine&#39;s General Staff said on Saturday morning that Ukrainian and Russian forces had clashed 45 times near Pokrovsk the day prior to this.</p>

<p>According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russian forces carried out six missile attacks and 55 airstrikes across Ukraine on Friday and overnight, killing greater than 70 <a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-bombs-airfields-scorched-earth-58380b8625df7ed52a3b5472326559b8">“Glide bombs” —</a> converted Soviet-era weapons which have caused devastating damage within the country in recent weeks.</p>
<p>In Russia, two civilians were injured when Ukrainian forces shelled a border town within the southern Belgorod region overnight, governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.</p>
<p>The Russian Defense Ministry said its troops shot down a complete of eight drones over the Kursk and Belgorod regions within the south throughout the night.</p>
<p>In Krasnodar province in Russian-annexed Crimea, local authorities reported damage caused overnight by falling drone debris. Debris sparked a fireplace at an oil depot, set fuel tanks ablaze elsewhere and damaged a cellular phone tower, the reports said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.</p>

<p>According to a top executive at PG&#038;E Corp., California&#39;s largest energy provider expects its electricity demand to double by 2040, because of artificial intelligence, electric cars and other efforts to affect larger parts of the economy.</p>
<p>PG&#038;E is capable of handle this surge in demand without significantly expanding its power plant fleet, CEO Patti Poppe said in an interview with Bloomberg Television on Friday. This is since the energy supplier&#39;s system isn&#8217;t running at full capability.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our network is not being used sufficiently today,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We expanded the network significantly years ago and now we can use it.&#8221;</p>
<p>PG&#038;E&#39;s grid is currently at around 45 percent capability, and Poppe expects that to rise to as much as 80 percent. While there can be &#8220;some new generations,&#8221; the CEO said higher use of existing assets is essential to providing more power without increasing costs.</p>
<p>PG&#038;E shares fell 0.9 percent at 10:46 a.m. in New York. The stock is up 1 percent this yr.</p>
<p>A large increase in electricity demand can be expected in other parts of the USA. The head of the electricity grid operator in Texas estimated this week that electricity demand there&#8217;ll almost double by 2030. Several US electricity suppliers have also drastically revised their demand forecasts upwards, but unlike PG&#038;E, other firms are planning to construct latest power plants.</p>
<p><strong>Forest fires</strong></p>
<p>Poppe has promised to stop catastrophic wildfires, which drove the utility out of business in 2019 after its facilities sparked a few of the worst fires in California history, killing greater than 100 people and destroying hundreds of homes.</p>
<p>The utility says it has reduced the variety of ignitions on its equipment by 68% since 2017 by installing more weather monitoring stations, strengthening poles, covering and burying power lines, and taking precautionary measures to shut off power during dry and windy weather.</p>

<p>The billboards fade in the intense sun.  Antony Green does his vocal warm-up exercises.  The 2024 Tasmanian election campaign is nearly over and is now as much as the voters. </p>
<p>The five-week campaign was largely unimaginative, but not without notable moments, from wildcard independents to guarantees of the world&#39;s largest chocolate fountain. </p>
<p>So what&#8217;s the state of play leading as much as Election Day?  Which announcements have prevailed and what has been lost within the flood of guarantees?  And after all, what would we reasonably forget?</p>

<h2>The key players</h2>
<p>Tasmania has five electorates: Bass, Braddon, Clark, Franklin and Lyons.  Each of them will <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-11-24/peg-putt-1998-tasmanian-parliament-numbers-chair-protest/101689536">elects seven members</a> It returned to the House of Commons for the primary time since 1998, when each electorate was reduced to 5 seats. </p>

<p>Jeremy Rockliff is leader of the Liberal Party (there isn&#8217;t any coalition within the south) and has been Prime Minister since April 2022. </p>
<p>He had a rough ride.  There have been several cabinet reshuffles and he has been forced to manipulate within the minority since May 2023, when two of his MPs quit the party to take a seat on the crossbench.  He called the election to revive his parliamentary majority.</p>
<p>In the alternative camp, Rebecca White is leader of the Labor Party and is hoping to avoid her third election defeat in a row.  Like Rockliff, the previous few years haven&#8217;t been smooth sailing for White and Labor. </p>
<p>She resigned as party leader following the 2021 election defeat and was replaced by David O&#39;Byrne.  However, O&#39;Byrne was forced to quit three weeks later after a&#8230; <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-06-30/labor-investigates-sexual-harassment-claims-against-david-obyrne/100253560">Sexual harassment lawsuit</a>, and White was re-elected as leader.  She and Labor struggled to say themselves throughout the election campaign.</p>
<p>Rosalie Woodruff is leader of the Green Party, which has long been the third largest party in Tasmania.  Woodruff took over from Cassy O&#39;Connor in July 2023, but is an unknown quantity and has less public visibility than previous Green Party leaders.</p>

<p>This is where things get interesting.  This election will see probably the most independents (29) vote in an election in Tasmania in a long time. </p>
<p>Although there are too many to list, listed below are some things to take into accout: </p>
<ul>
<li>
<p>John Tucker and Lara Alexander (the Liberal MPs leaving in 2023)</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>David O&#39;Byrne (former Labor leader)</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Kristie Johnson (a sitting independent MP) </p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Sue Hickey (former Lord Mayor of Hobart, former Liberal then Independent MP).</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>Finally, there may be the Jacqui Lambie Network (JLN), which is fielding candidates for all seats except Clark.  The JLN made the controversial decision to not publish policies and as a substitute portray themselves as a bunch of down-to-earth individuals who need to “keep the bastards honest.”  </p>

<h2>Which issues dominated the election campaign?</h2>
<p>Polls throughout the election campaign showed that <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-02-15/tas-stateline-election-issues-influencing-voters/103463516">Main concern</a> For most Tasmanian voters, healthcare and price of living were critical.  Labor and Liberal, amongst others, have proposed several measures targeting these areas. </p>
<p>Millions of dollars were promised with the keenness of a reduction carpet warehouse closing a sale &#8211; but this <a href="https://www.themercury.com.au/news/tasmania/lyons-is-tasmanias-largest-geographical-electorate-covering-many-regional-areas/news-story/c116fd291dc9b8eb76efc2fe363e49ea">not necessarily</a> helped win votes.  In fact, this type of political bonanza can confuse and overwhelm voters.</p>

<p>In a super world, each of us would determine our selection by comparing the complete policies of every candidate or party and finding which most closely fits our own values.  But who has time for that? </p>
<p>In reality, people normally vote based on a mix of <a href="https://daily.jstor.org/what-makes-us-vote-the-way-we-do/">other things</a>, including specific, controversial topics, eye-catching headlines and the candidates&#39; personalities.  This is how democracies work everywhere in the world. </p>
<p>So what were the things that might need modified votes during this campaign? </p>
<p>The long-standing divide in Tasmanian society between environmental protection and economic development stays, meaning voters can select who to vote for depending on each party&#39;s stance on, for instance, salmon farming or the proposed latest AFL stadium takes. </p>
<p>Some influential topics are hyperlocal, akin to a long-closed topic <a href="https://www.themercury.com.au/news/tasmania/labor-makes-election-promise-of-5m-to-repair-and-reopen-glenorchy-pool/news-story/88a4ff6da7046cea183d4ac962eecc06">Community pool</a>. </p>
<p>During the campaign there have been a couple of “headline makers” who should stick within the minds of undecided voters.  The best example of that is the Liberals&#39; promise to construct the biggest on the earth <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/mar/10/pure-imagination-tasmanian-premier-vows-to-build-worlds-largest-chocolate-fountain-if-re-elected">Chocolate fountain</a> if chosen.  Work <a href="https://taslabor.org.au/our-plan/power-prices/">refrain</a> “Tasmanian prices for Tasmanian electricity” also play a task. </p>
<p>The final thing that may influence voters is what <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/mar/19/its-the-vibe-25-years-on-how-the-castle-became-an-australian-classic#:%7E:text=For%20some%2C%20the%20most%20well,the%20vibe%2C%E2%80%9D%20says%20Denuto.">Dennis Denuto</a> would call “the mood” across the candidates. </p>
<p>Rockliff has benefited from the perception that he&#8217;s a “<a href="https://www.themercury.com.au/news/opinion/wooley-libs-launched-back-in-time-by-nice-guy-jrock/news-story/acbafc64fae580379192f2e65ea8aa37">nice guy</a>” under difficult circumstances as White struggled to separate her brand from the O&#39;Byrne controversy and <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-03-30/analysis-labor-strategy-questions-after-winter-snub/100037140">previous Labor factional struggles</a>.</p>
<p>The Greens have been knocking hard on the door, especially within the states <a href="https://www.crikey.com.au/2024/03/15/tasmanian-greens-state-election-braddon/">northwest</a>.  This personal contact can enable you attract a brand new candidate. </p>
<p>The JLN has relied heavily on the forceful “fighter” persona of its namesake.  Each independent has tried to construct their very own brand, normally by specializing in a selected issue or strengthening their ability to arise to the main parties.  It&#39;s hard to say how successful these efforts have been &#8211; the proof might be within the votes.  </p>
<h2>The low points</h2>
<p>There were some low points throughout the campaign.
