<p>Over the past decade, the business space industry has experienced a rapid boom. Rival nations are competing for military and economic leadership beyond Earth. Public and personal entities are <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cxwwjlrk1mlo">loudly</a> mine the moon, and a <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/09/28/the-elusive-peril-of-space-junk">growing halo of space debris</a> pollutes low Earth orbit. </p>
<p>In a 2023 white paper, a bunch of concerned astronomers warned of a repeat of terrestrial “<a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2010.08344">Colonial practices</a>” in space. But what’s improper with colonizing space when there’s nothing there to start with?</p>
<p>I&#8217;m a <a href="https://www.maryjanerubenstein.com/">Philosopher of Science and Religion</a> who has been writing in regards to the space industry for several years. As government agencies and personal corporations set their eyes on the celebs, I&#39;ve noticed that lots of the aspects that drove European Christian imperialism between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries are reemerging in high-speed, high-tech forms. </p>
<p>These colonial practices include, amongst others, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/enclosure">Fencing of the property</a>the exploitation of ecological resources and the destruction of landscapes – within the name of ideals resembling destiny, civilization and the salvation of humanity. </p>
<p>Many leading figures within the space industry, resembling <a href="https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Case-for-Mars/Robert-Zubrin/9781982172923">Mars Society President Robert Zubrin</a>argue that while European-style colonialism can have had unpleasant consequences on Earth, it&#8217;s the only strategy to move forward in space. In fact, he warns, any try to decelerate or regulate the space industry will <a href="https://nss.org/the-significance-of-the-martian-frontier-by-robert-zubrin/">make the Martian border inaccessible to humanity</a>and we remain stuck on an increasingly boring and decadent Earth.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/11/wokeists-assault-space-exploration/">Zubrin has argued against</a> <a href="https://global.oup.com/academic/product/reclaiming-space-9780197604793?cc=us&#038;lang=en&#038;">Concerns about colonialism in space</a>. Unlike Earth, space is empty, he claims. Why should anyone care in regards to the rights of rocks and a number of hypothetical microbes? But because it seems, not everyone agrees that space is empty. And as concerned astronomers have argued, a departure from the colonial playbook would profit industry insiders and outsiders alike.</p>
<h2>Is space really empty?</h2>
<p>People in Bawaka Country in northern Australia <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.polgeo.2020.102218">have told the space industry</a> that their ancestors direct human life from their home within the galaxy, and that <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.polgeo.2020.102218">This relationship is increasingly under threat</a> through large satellite networks in orbit.</p>
<p>Likewise, Inuit elders say their ancestors <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/1499889">survive celestial bodies</a>The Navajo leadership has asked NASA <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/05/world/peregrine-moon-mission-navajo-nation-objection-human-remains-scn/index.html">to not land human stays on the moon</a>The Kanaka elders have insisted that <a href="https://doi.org/10.1353/nai.2017.a703400">no more telescopes</a> be built on Mauna Kea, which the native Hawaiians consider to be their ancestral and sacred place. </p>
<p>These views of indigenous peoples stand in stark contrast to the claim by many industry representatives that space is empty and lifeless.</p>
<p>The key to reconciling these very different positions is to succeed in agreement &#8211; not on beliefs or worldviews, but on behaviors. Secular space enthusiasts do not need to consider that space is populated, animate, or sacred to treat it with the care and respect that Indigenous communities demand of the industry. </p>
<p>Careful use of space may include: <a href="https://api.mountainscholar.org/server/api/core/bitstreams/c19488c0-aaa1-49ba-82a8-a93f3454dc3f/content">Preservation of remarkable natural formations</a>Limiting mining, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/09/science/rocket-pollution-spacex-satellites.html">Reduction in satellite permits and launches</a> and discover a strategy to clean up trash in orbit.</p>
<h2>Environmental concerns</h2>
<p>The emerging field of <a href="https://interplanetary.asu.edu/space-ecology/">Space ecology</a> examines the <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.5749/j.ctvgd2z0">Relationships between human artifacts and natural environments</a> in reference to the Earth&#39;s orbit, on the Moon and on other planets. <p>The moon, Mars and asteroids help scientists understand how planets and the solar system were formed, what conditions are vital for all times and what planets might appear like in the long run. If the space industry doesn&#8217;t use explosions, mines and – following a suggestion by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk – <a href="https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/a32588385/elon-musk-terraform-mars-nuclear-missiles/">Atomic bombs on planetary bodies</a>scientists could lose access to this information.</p>
<p>The business space industry has already caused significant environmental damage to Earth and its surroundings.</p>
<p>SpaceX’s constant rocket tests and launches have <a href="https://www.tpr.org/environment/2023-04-18/fragile-boca-chica-ecosystem-endures-the-impact-of-spacex-starship-launches">decimated the wetlands</a> from Boca Chica, Texas. TO <a href="https://www.space.com/spacex-starship-telescope-astronomer-video">SpaceX Starship explosion in April 2023</a> <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2023/05/02/texas-spacex-lawsuit-faa-environmental-pollution/">damaged</a> a <a href="https://biologicaldiversity.org/w/news/press-releases/new-claims-filed-over-spacex-rocket-launchpad-explosion-2023-12-15/">estimated 385 hectares</a> of land, waterways, turtles and birds – not to say cars, houses and human lungs.</p>
<p>The rapidly increasing number of personal and public launches within the industry results in kerosene, carbon and sulphur deposits <a href="https://www.space.com/environmental-impact-space-tourism-flights">into the upper atmosphere</a>where these substances remain longer than within the stratosphere. </p>
<p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2021JD036373">Studies have shown</a> that the buildup of those substances could exponentially speed up climate change. According to 1 estimate, rocket emissions warm the atmosphere <a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2021EF002612">500 times faster</a> resembling flight emissions.</p>
<p>Even if Musk never makes it to Mars, SpaceX and numerous competitors <a href="https://www.space.com/starlink-satellite-conjunction-increase-threatens-space-sustainability">Satellite traffic in low Earth orbit</a> that may <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/iss-astronauts-forced-to-briefly-take-shelter-as-russian-satellite-suddenly-breaks-up-in-orbit-180984626/">threaten the lives of astronauts</a> and there may be a risk that these orbits will change into unusable.</p>

<h2>Human consequences</h2>
<p>Many leaders within the space industry have a good time space as the brand new New World or the ultimate frontier. Yet early modern economies in sugar, tobacco and gold produced <a href="https://education.cfr.org/learn/reading/what-colonialism-and-how-did-it-arise">Profit from constructing an empire</a> for Europe and the early USA through slavery and debt bondage. </p>
<p>Space industry leaders must consider what labor conditions will appear like once they send employees to staff hotels, construct bunkers, and facilitate asteroid mining. After all, space staff depend on their employers not just for pay and medical health insurance, but additionally for food, water, air, and transportation back to Earth.</p>
<p>In 1967, numerous nations, including the United States, Great Britain and the USSR, signed the <a href="https://www.unoosa.org/oosa/en/ourwork/spacelaw/treaties/introouterspacetreaty.html">Outer Space Treaty</a>This treaty stated, amongst other things, that no state may own a celestial body or a part of it.</p>
<p>The Outer Space Treaty was negotiated and signed within the wake of two world wars. It was the results of European conflicts within the twentieth century. Even though colonialism on Earth culminated in these two wars, the nations that signed the Outer Space Treaty were effectively saying, &#8220;Let&#39;s not go back to fighting over territory and resources. Let&#39;s approach space differently.&#8221; </p>
<p>The Outer Space Treaty is now outdated and practically unenforceable. But any future laws should preserve the anti-colonial spirit of the unique treaty. </p>
<p>So from a political perspective, it doesn&#39;t matter whether space is definitely inhabited or whether rocks have rights. To prevent colonialism in space, the space industry must disagree on these metaphysical issues.</p>
<p>Rather, participants from across the industry and beyond must agree on common standards for safeguarding planets and their orbits – whether their motivations are scientific, environmental, humanitarian or religious.</p>

<p>Have you ever played hide and seek in a brand new place? It&#39;s much harder than at home. You only know the apparent hiding places: under the bed, within the closet, behind the couch. The trick is to consider hiding places which you could&#39;t even imagine. How do you search in places you never thought could possibly be hiding places?</p>
<p>That is roughly <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=MCCB-1gAAAAJ&#038;hl=en&#038;oi=ao">Scientists like me</a> we do after we search for extraterrestrial life; we try to consider latest ways to look for all times. In the meantime, we glance for all times by on the lookout for life like us, because that&#39;s what we are able to imagine.</p>
<h2>To search something near here</h2>
<p>The closest place to search for extraterrestrial life is the planets inside our solar system.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/missions/viking-1">NASA Mission Viking 1</a> began orbiting Earth&#39;s neighboring planet Mars in 1976. The search for all times on Mars was considered one of the mission&#39;s most significant scientific questions. The space probe had a lander that would reach the planet&#39;s surface and search for all times forms within the dust.</p>

<p>Scientists knew that life on Mars could possibly be very different from life on Earth, in order that they didn&#39;t search for specific life forms or molecules. Instead, they tried to design experiments to search out out what life does, not what creates it.</p>
<p>Plants and another life forms on Earth, for instance, have <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/photosynthesis">photosynthesis</a>a process that uses sunlight and carbon dioxide within the air to generate energy and grow. Viking 1 scientists designed the lander to search for signs of photosynthesis on Mars.</p>
<p>To do that, the lander collected some soil, shone light on it, and took measurements to see if carbon dioxide was passing from the air into the soil. This experiment found no signs of photosynthesis within the Martian soil.</p>
<p>Two other experiments were conducted on the lander to search for evidence of organisms growing in Martian dust. One experiment used carbon dioxide gas, and one other used sugar and amino acid molecules that life forms on Earth wish to eat.</p>
<p>The combination of those three experiments and other measurements led most scientists to agree that there may be probably no life on the surface of Mars, no less than no life that performs photosynthesis or eats sugar. But we still don&#39;t know if there may be any evidence of ancient life on Mars, or if there may be any life in any respect deep beneath the surface.</p>
<p>The Viking lander experiments were probably the most direct tests for all times on other planets. Compared to a game of hide-and-seek, these experiments were mainly like looking within the closet: it&#39;s a fairly obvious hiding place, but it&#8217;s best to look there simply to be certain. Even so, it took a protracted time for scientists to interpret the outcomes.</p>

<h2>View into the space</h2>
<p>The search for all times outside our solar system is even tougher and requires other techniques.</p>
<p>The next <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/extrasolar-planet">Exoplanet</a> – a planet orbiting a star that isn&#8217;t our sun – is <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/exoplanet-catalog/proxima-centauri-b/">Proxima Centauri born</a>and it&#8217;s greater than 2 million, million miles (that&#39;s 2 followed by 13 zeros) from Earth. These distant worlds <a href="https://openstax.org/details/books/astronomy-2e">are thus far away</a> that scientists won&#8217;t send landers to conduct experiments on them for a very long time. </p>
<p>Searching for all times on exoplanets is a bit like playing hide-and-seek in your neighbor&#39;s house, but you may only glance through the windows and never go in. You might get lucky and get the appropriate angle to identify someone hiding, but you may&#39;t know all of the places you may&#39;t see.</p>
<p>Tools just like the latest <a href="https://webb.nasa.gov/content/about/faqs/facts.html">James Webb Space Telescope</a> can reveal the dimensions of exoplanets, how close they&#8217;re to their stars, and maybe the gases of their atmospheres. But that&#39;s all. How could we use it to look for all times?</p>

<p>Astronomers have considered looking for life on exoplanets by <a href="https://doi.org/10.1089/ast.2017.1727">in the hunt for oxygen</a>. They began this strategy because on Earth, life forms produced many of the oxygen in our atmosphere. Perhaps on one other planet, oxygen was produced by extraterrestrial life.</p>
<p>However, we now have learned that there are other ways to create oxygen that don&#39;t require life. So now astronomers aren&#39;t just on the lookout for oxygen &#8211; they&#39;re on the lookout for a planet that has oxygen together with water and other gases like methane and carbon dioxide. Together, these combos could indicate life, as we don&#39;t think planets without life would have such combos. But we&#39;re still unsure about that!</p>
<p>Searching for all times by on the lookout for these gases is a bit like playing hide and seek behind the sofa. Do we all know that somebody will likely be there? No. But we are able to just glance through the windows and picture that folks are hiding behind sofas. We can try &#8211; where else should we glance?</p>
<h2>What game are we playing?</h2>
<p>There are two big differences between playing hide and seek and looking for aliens.</p>
<p>First, once you play hide and seek, you often know you&#39;re fidgeting with another person. We do not know if there are aliens on the market to be found! It&#39;s possible that there isn&#8217;t a other life on the market, and it&#39;s possible that there are aliens right round the corner. Until we discover examples of life aside from our own, we won&#39;t understand how common life is within the universe.</p>

<p>The second difference is that almost all scientists don&#8217;t consider that extraterrestrial life is hiding from us; we just haven&#8217;t discovered it yet. There are some ideas that more advanced civilizations <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/0019-1035(73)90111-5">could avoid being discovered</a>but researchers don&#8217;t consider this happens in our solar system.</p>
<p>Most astronomers and astrobiologists know that if we only look for all times that resembles life on Earth, we may miss the signs of aliens which might be truly different from them. But truthfully, we&#39;ve never discovered aliens before, so it&#39;s hard to know where to start out. When you don&#39;t know what to do, it&#39;s often higher to start out somewhere than nowhere.</p>
<p>Searching for all times with experiments just like the Viking lander or for oxygen may not help. But perhaps we&#39;ll get lucky. And even when not, we are able to cross a number of obvious possibilities off the list. Then we are able to move on to the harder query of imagining something we&#39;ve never considered before.</p>
