<p>Once upon a time, luxury safari visitors were all about spotting lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhinos &#8211; but while staying in nicer tents and eating gourmet meals.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s changing.</p>
<p>&#8220;Safaris are no longer just about the &#39;Big Five,&#39;&#8221; said Lori Cohen, an writer who covers luxury safaris. “People only have so much free time in their lives, and they really want to use that time to do something special and transformative.”</p>
<p>“They want personal attention [and] unique experiences,” she said. They want “their feelings addressed.”</p>
<p>This is changing the definition of luxury tourism in Africa, said Olivia Gradidge, marketing manager at trade fair organizer RX Africa.</p>
<p>“While world-class amenities remain important, the focus on unique and exclusive experiences has expanded,” she said. “Travellers, particularly those seeking luxury, are increasingly driven by the desire for novelty and exclusivity. They crave experiences they’ve never had before.”</p>

<p>That might be a walk with a veterinarian who works with gorillas or a glance into the lifetime of a neighboring community, Cohen said.</p>
<p>For others, it&#39;s an experience that matches their interests, reminiscent of photography or the chance to trace certain animals or a helicopter trip to a distant area, Gradidge said. Travelers are increasingly fascinated with “taking a behind-the-scenes look where guests can participate in conservation activities, meet researchers or learn about anti-poaching efforts,” she said.</p>
<p>“These experiences… [transform] “The traditional safari transforms from passive wildlife viewing to an active and exciting adventure,” she said.</p>

<h2 class="ArticleBody-subtitle"><a id="headline0"></a>How luxury safaris are changing</h2>

<p>The luxury safari market is anticipated to proceed to grow <a href="https://www.businessresearchinsights.com/market-reports/luxury-safari-tourism-market-107947" target="_blank">$1.7 billion in 2023 to $1.98 billion by 2032</a>in response to the market research company Business Research Insights.</p>
<p>A 2024 <a href="https://atwconnect.com/atw-trend-report-2024/" target="_blank">Trend report</a> The study, published by travel website Africa Travel Week, noted the rise of “7+ star experiences” and “ultimate luxury” in Africa. But the web site Discover Africa notes that luxury travelers are moving beyond luxury right into a recent era of “<a href="https://www.discoverafrica.com/blog/beyond-opulence-conscious-luxury-takes-the-spotlight-in-2025/" target="_blank">conscious luxury</a>“, which combines sustainable safari tourism and personalized itineraries.</p>

<p>Kgomotso Ramothea, CEO of the African Travel &#038; Tourism Association, said there was greater interest in walking and trekking safaris, which produce lower carbon emissions than traditional safaris.</p>
<p>Murielle Mignot-Vegezzi, product director at luxury safari company Discover Africa, said destinations such as Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and Botswana remained the top choice.</p>

<p>But “return visitors are looking for more immersive experiences, with safari itineraries through multiple countries rather than trips to individual countries.”</p>
<p>This can increase prices. The price of a luxury safari booking reached $9,600 per person in 2024, she said.</p>

<h2 class="ArticleBody-subtitle"><a id="headline1"></a>How much does a safari cost?</h2>

<h3 class="ArticleBody-smallSubtitle">Easy and medium safaris</h3>
<p>A basic African safari costs between $100 and $300 per person per day.</p>
<p>With this budget, shared game drives are often possible at certain times of the day. Compared to luxury safaris in private game reserves or nature reserves, wildlife viewing could also be limited.</p>
<p>Meals are also moderately easy in comparison with high-end safari camps.</p>
<p>For $300 to $600 per day, travelers can expect excellent service and fewer fellow guests. There are sometimes additional activities reminiscent of guided bush walks, night drives and experienced rangers.</p>
<p>In Kenya, camps that fall into this category include Mara Intrepids Tented Camp, Ashnil Mara Camp, Tangulia Mara Camp and Kitumo Mara Lodges.</p>
<p>There can also be the Serengeti Sopa Lodge in Tanzania; South Africa&#39;s Sabi River Sun Resort in Kruger National Park; Botswana&#39;s Moremi Crossing; and Namibia&#39;s Sossus Dune Lodge within the Namib Desert.</p>
<h3 class="ArticleBody-smallSubtitle">Luxury safaris</h3>
<p>These lodges typically cost around $600 per person per day and offer luxury accommodations, private game safaris, gourmet meals and personalized services reminiscent of private guides and butlers.</p>

<p>Angama Mara, Emboo <strong>–</strong> New Generation Safari Camp, Richard Branson&#39;s Mahali Mzuri and JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge are examples of luxury safari camps in Kenya&#39;s Masai Mara. There is Finch Hattons near Tsavo National Park and the Angama brand has one other luxury camp in Amboseli National Park. The Elewana Collection has camps in pristine locations in Kenya and Tanzania, as does Asilia Camps, which also runs safaris in Uganda.</p>
<p>In Tanzania there may be the Singita Sabora Tented Camp and the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, the latter with Serengeti views, plunge pools and an infinity pool.</p>

<p>There are also many safaris on this price range in South Africa, from the Royal Malewane to the Babohi within the Qwabi Private Game Reserve, an exclusive lodge for adults only.</p>
<h3 class="ArticleBody-smallSubtitle">Ultra luxury safaris</h3>
<p>To experience the head of the safari experience, you should be prepared to pay between $1,500 and $10,000 per day to enjoy fastidiously tailored activities, exceptional amenities and exceptional service.</p>
<p>In Rwanda, lodges like Bisate Lodge and One &#038; Only Gorilla&#39;s Nest are positioned near Volcanoes National Park, home to the country&#39;s mountain gorillas. These lodges offer gourmet meals in stunning surroundings, private gorilla trekking excursions with expert guides, and distant locations that provide an intimate experience for those looking for seclusion.</p>
<p>There&#39;s also the Singita Grumeti in Tanzania and the andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa, which offers luxury bush villas with private plunge pools, private game drives and walks with trackers.</p>

<p>As you scroll through your social media feed or let your favorite music app put together the proper playlist, you could feel like artificial intelligence is improving your life &#8211; learning your preferences and meeting your needs. But behind this practical façade lurks a growing concern: algorithmic harm. </p>
<p>These damages will not be obvious or immediate. They are insidious and construct over time as AI systems silently make decisions about your life without you even realizing it. The hidden power of those systems is becoming ever greater <a href="https://www.ntia.gov/issues/artificial-intelligence/ai-accountability-policy-report/requisites-for-ai-accountability-areas-of-significant-commenter-agreement/recognize-potential-harms-and-risks">a major threat</a> on privacy, equality, autonomy and security. </p>
<p>AI systems are embedded in almost every aspect of contemporary life. They suggest <a href="https://research.netflix.com/research-area/recommendations">which shows and movies you need to watch</a>Help employers <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/mar/16/ai-racism-chatgpt-gemini-bias">resolve who they wish to hire</a>and even influence judges <a href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/transactional/us-judge-runs-mini-experiment-with-ai-help-decide-case-2024-09-06/">resolve who&#8217;s eligible for punishment</a>. But what happens when these systems, often viewed as neutral, start making decisions that drawback certain groups or, worse, cause harm in the actual world? </p>
<p>The often ignored consequences of AI applications require regulatory frameworks that may keep pace with this rapidly evolving technology. I <a href="https://scholar.google.com.au/citations?hl=en&#038;user=1jTquTsAAAAJ&#038;view_op=list_works&#038;sortby=pubdate">Study the intersection between law and technology</a>and I sketched it <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.4949052">a legal framework</a> to do exactly that.</p>
<h2>Slow burns</h2>
<p>One of essentially the most striking facets of algorithmic harm is that its cumulative effects often fly under the radar. These systems typically do in a roundabout way attack your privacy or autonomy in ways which can be easily apparent to you. They collect massive amounts of information about people &#8211; often without their knowledge &#8211; and use that data to make decisions that impact people&#39;s lives. </p>
<p>Sometimes this causes minor inconveniences, resembling advertisements following you across web sites. However, because AI doesn&#8217;t reply to this recurring harm, it will probably escalate and cause significant cumulative harm to different groups of individuals.</p>
<p>Consider the instance of social media algorithms. They are supposedly designed to advertise useful social interactions. However, behind their seemingly helpful facade, they silently track users&#39; clicks and clicks <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2019/01/16/facebook-algorithms-and-personal-data/">Create profiles of their political opinions, skilled affiliations, and private lives</a>. The data collected is <a href="https://hbr.org/2022/09/ai-isnt-ready-to-make-unsupervised-decisions">Used in systems that make consequential decisions</a> – whether you will likely be identified as a screaming pedestrian, considered for a job, or considered liable to committing suicide. </p>
<p>Worse, their addictive design traps teenagers in cycles of overuse, resulting in increasing mental health crises resembling anxiety, depression and self-harm. By the time you realize the total extent, it&#39;s too late &#8211; your privacy has been violated, your opportunities have been compromised by biased algorithms, and the security of essentially the most vulnerable has been undermined &#8211; all without your knowledge. </p>
<p>That&#39;s what I call &#8220;<a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.4949052">intangible, cumulative damage</a>“: AI systems operate within the background, but their effects could be devastating and invisible.</p>

<h2>Why regulation is lagging behind</h2>
<p>Despite these growing threats, legal frameworks worldwide are struggling to maintain pace. In the United States, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/21/technology/ai-united-states-regulation.html">a regulatory approach with an emphasis on innovation</a> has made it difficult to ascertain strict standards for the usage of these systems in numerous contexts. </p>
<p>Courts and supervisory authorities are <a href="https://www.bu.edu/bulawreview/files/2022/04/CITRON-SOLOVE.pdf">used to coping with concrete damage</a>resembling physical injuries or economic losses, but algorithmic harms are sometimes more subtle, cumulative and difficult to detect. Regulations often don&#8217;t take into consideration the broader impacts that AI systems can have over time. </p>
<p>For example, social media algorithms can regularly affect users&#39; mental health. However, because these damages construct up slowly, it&#8217;s difficult to combat them inside the applicable legal standards. </p>
<h2>Four forms of algorithmic harm</h2>
<p>Based on existing AI and data governance research, I divided algorithmic harms into categories <a href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4949052">4 areas of law</a>: privacy, autonomy, equality and security. Each of those areas is vulnerable to the subtle but often uncontrolled power of AI systems.</p>
<p>The first form of harm is erosion of privacy. AI systems collect, process and transmit massive amounts of information, undermining people&#39;s privacy in ways in which is probably not immediately obvious but have long-term implications. For example, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/10/technology/facial-recognition-stores.html">Facial recognition systems can track people</a> in private and non-private spaces, effectively making mass surveillance the norm.</p>
<p>The second form of harm is the undermining of autonomy. AI systems often subtly undermine your ability to make autonomous decisions by manipulating the knowledge displayed. Social media platforms use algorithms to indicate users content that maximizes the interests of third parties. <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/jan/04/cambridge-analytica-data-leak-global-election-manipulation">subtle shaping of opinions, decisions and behavior</a> over tens of millions of users.</p>
<p>The third form of harm is degradation of equality. AI systems are sometimes designed to be neutral <a href="https://yjolt.org/algorithms-and-economic-justice-taxonomy-harms-and-path-forward-federal-trade-commission">inherit the biases present of their data and algorithms</a>. The <a href="https://www.uclalawreview.org/private-accountability-age-algorithm/">increases social inequalities over time</a>. One infamous case involved a facial recognition system utilized by retail stores to detect shoplifters <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2023/12/rite-aid-banned-using-ai-facial-recognition-after-ftc-says-retailer-deployed-technology-without">Women and folks of color are disproportionately misidentified</a>.</p>
<p>The fourth form of damage is impairment of safety. AI systems make decisions that <a href="https://scholarship.law.vanderbilt.edu/jetlaw/vol23/iss1/3/">affect people&#39;s safety and well-being</a>. When these systems fail, the results could be catastrophic. But even in the event that they work as designed, they&#8217;ll still cause harm, like social media algorithms. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rd2yC63DMBE">cumulative impact on teen mental health</a>.</p>
<p>Because this cumulative damage is commonly attributable to AI applications <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.4949052">protected by trade secret laws</a>Victims don&#8217;t have any way of identifying or tracing the damage. This creates an accountability gap. How does the victim know that a biased hiring decision or wrongful arrest is being made based on an algorithm? Without transparency, it is almost inconceivable to carry firms accountable.</p>

<h2>Closing the accountability gap</h2>
<p>By categorizing the forms of algorithmic harms, the legal boundaries of AI regulation are delineated and possible legal reforms are presented to shut this accountability gap. Changes that I consider would help include mandatory algorithmic impact assessments, which require firms to document and address the immediate and cumulative harms of an AI application to privacy, autonomy, equality and security &#8211; before and after its implementation. For example, firms using facial recognition systems would want to evaluate the impact of those systems throughout their lifecycle.</p>
<p>Another helpful change could be stronger individual rights around the usage of AI systems, which might allow people to opt out of harmful practices and require certain AI applications to opt-in. For example, requiring an opt-in regime for data processing by firms that use facial recognition systems and the power for users to opt out at any time. </p>
<p>Finally, I suggest requiring firms to reveal the usage of AI technology and the expected harm. To illustrate, this will include notifying customers in regards to the use of facial recognition systems and the expected harm within the areas described within the typology.</p>
<p>As AI systems turn into more widely utilized in critical societal functions – from healthcare to education to employment – ​​the necessity to control the harm they cause becomes increasingly urgent. Without intervention, these invisible harms are prone to proceed to build up, affecting almost anyone and everybody <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jrt.2020.100005">The most vulnerable are disproportionately affected</a>. </p>
<p>Because generative AI multiplies and exacerbates the harms of AI, I consider it is necessary that policymakers, courts, technology developers, and civil society recognize the legal harms of AI. This requires not only higher laws, but in addition a more thoughtful approach to cutting-edge AI technology – one which sets priorities <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/ostp/ai-bill-of-rights/">Civil rights and justice</a> in view of the rapid technical progress. </p>
<p>The way forward for AI is incredibly promising, but without the best legal framework, it could also exacerbate inequality and undermine the very civil liberties it&#8217;s designed to strengthen in lots of cases.</p>

<p>As humans alter our planet&#39;s climate and ecosystems, scientists study Earth&#39;s history to predict the potential consequences of climate change. To do that, giant ice structures like glaciers function nature&#39;s freezers, archiving detailed records of past climates and ecosystems &#8211; including viruses. </p>
<p>We are a team of <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=63yeqb0AAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Microbiologists</a> <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=rYg4wbcAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">And</a> <a href="https://geography.osu.edu/people/thompson.4">Paleoclimatologists</a> which studies ancient microorganisms, including viruses preserved in glacier ice. Together with our colleagues <a href="https://earthsciences.osu.edu/people/thompson.3">Lonnie Thompson</a>, <a href="https://microbiology.osu.edu/people/rich.270">Virginia Rich</a> and other researchers at <a href="https://byrd.osu.edu/research/groups/ice-core-paleoclimatology">Ice Core Palaeoclimatology Group</a> At Ohio State University, we study interactions between viruses and their environment which are observed in ice cores from the <a href="https://byrd.osu.edu/research/groups/ice-core-paleoclimatology/projects/china/guliya">Guliya Glacier on the Tibetan Plateau</a>.</p>
<p>By linking the genomes of ancient virus communities to specific climate conditions preserved in glacier ice, our newly published research provides insights into how these <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-024-01508-z">Viruses have adapted to the Earth&#39;s changing climate</a> within the last 41,000 years. </p>

<h2>Read the story of viral genes</h2>
<p>We primarily <a href="https://www.genome.gov/genetics-glossary/Metagenomics">Metagenomes used</a> – genome collections that capture the whole genetic content of all microorganisms present in environmental samples – to reconstruct viral genomes from nine different time intervals throughout the Guliya ice core. These time horizons span three major cold-warm cycles and supply a novel opportunity to look at how viral communities have modified in response to different climatic conditions.</p>
<p>Through our analyses we were capable of discover the genomes of <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-024-01508-z">Equivalent of 1,705 virus species</a>This has resulted in a greater than fifty-fold increase within the variety of known ancient viruses preserved in glaciers. </p>
<p><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-024-01508-z">Only a few quarter</a> of the virus species we found shared species-level similarities with all viruses identified in nearly 1,000 metagenomes previously collected in global datasets. Most of those overlapping species were also from the Tibetan Plateau. This suggests that not less than a few of the viruses preserved in Guliya Glacier originated from the region, but in addition speaks to the relative paucity of glacier viruses in available databases. </p>
<p>Using these recent reference genomes, we tried to “read” their stories. </p>
<p>One of a very powerful results was <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-024-01508-z">The viral communities differed considerably</a> between cold and warm climate periods. The most distinct community of viral species on the glacier emerged about 11,500 years ago, coinciding with the most important transition from the last ice age to the Holocene. This suggests that the unique climate conditions during cold and warm periods strongly influenced the composition of viral communities. We suspect that these influences are likely on account of viruses being blown in from other locations by changing wind patterns and being subjected to selection pressure from the changing temperatures on the glacier.</p>
<p>Digging deeper, we next checked out how viruses interact with their hosts. We used computer models to match viral genomes with the genomes of other microbes that also exist in that environment. We found that viruses <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-024-01508-z">constantly infected <em>Flavobacteria</em></a>a lineage of bacteria commonly present in glacial environments.</p>

<p>We also learned that viruses on the Guliya Glacier must “steal” genes from their hosts to control their metabolism. The following genes are encoded within the viral genomes: <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-024-01508-z">50 auxiliary metabolism genes</a> related to metabolism, including the synthesis and degradation of vitamins, amino acids and carbohydrates. Some of those genes were abundant in all nine time intervals studied, suggesting that they assist microbial hosts address the tough conditions on glacier surfaces and thereby enhance viral fitness. </p>
<p>Viruses not only infect and kill cells, but in addition likely alter the fitness of their hosts during infection, thereby influencing their ability to survive under the intense conditions of a glacial environment.</p>
<h2>Climate change over time</h2>
<p>Our findings provide a brand new perspective on how life in the shape of viruses has responded to climate change over tens of hundreds of years. </p>
<p>Understanding these ancient interactions provides a novel opportunity for future research in each virology and climate science. By studying the response of ancient viruses to past climate changes, researchers can gain worthwhile insights into how viruses adapt to ongoing global climate change.</p>
<p>We imagine that glacial ice, since it stores details about microorganisms and their ecosystems over time in each layer, will proceed to be a critical resource for studying Earth&#39;s climate history and the life that sustains it &#8211; especially given the rapid decline in glacial ice reserves.</p>

<p>Preparing for the Atlantic hurricane season is all the time a top priority within the Caribbean, especially when forecasts predict a high variety of storms, as is the case for 2024. The most devastating storm within the region in recent times, <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/AL152017_Maria.pdf">Hurricane Maria</a>struck in September 2017, causing unprecedented destruction in Puerto Rico, Dominica, St. Croix and other islands.  </p>
<p>Maria killed over 3,000 people and <a href="https://caribbean.loopnews.com/content/five-most-destructive-hurricanes-last-decade">caused damage of about 96 billion US dollars</a>It destroyed Puerto Rico’s power grid and left 1.5 million customers without power <a href="https://www.nrel.gov/news/features/2024/puerto-rico-can-reach-its-100-renewable-energy-goal-by-2050.html">as much as 328 days</a> – the longest power outage in U.S. history. These outages had cascading effects on other infrastructure, corresponding to water and communications systems.  </p>
<p>Today, the Caribbean is facing latest climate-related challenges. Due to the accelerated warming of the oceans, prolonged extreme heat and humid days have gotten more frequent. </p>
<p>In response to those increasingly frequent and extreme weather events, I joined forces with a dozen other researchers in 2023 to review the <a href="https://ccan-upr.org/">Caribbean Climate Adaptation Network</a>Our goal is to attach scientists with communities and government agencies within the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico and supply scientific information that might help them prepare for and reply to emerging climate extremes. </p>
<p>I&#8217;m a <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=EZCV8KUAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">Coastal Urban Climatologist</a> and a native of Puerto Rican. The creation of this network has been extremely necessary to me personally. I hope it is going to solidify our existing partnerships for longer-term collaboration between leading academic researchers, vulnerable communities, government agencies and utilities on the islands and function a platform to succeed in out to the whole Caribbean.  </p>
<p>Our mission is to develop latest ways to view the coastal and concrete environment as a unified system &#8211; one which puts people at the middle and integrates human-made systems like buildings and infrastructure with natural systems just like the atmosphere, ecosystems, and oceans. All of those elements face the challenge of climate change. We wish to support vulnerable communities by conducting research that could make them more resilient to climate change and convey them to the table so we will create higher solutions together.  </p>

<h2>Lessons from Puerto Rico’s recovery</h2>
<p>Puerto Rico has made its power grid more resilient within the years since Hurricane Maria, but challenges remain. Over 1 million customers on the island have experienced intermittent outages for the reason that hurricane. In September 2022 <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/AL072022_Fiona.pdf">Hurricane Fiona</a> – a much weaker Category 1 storm – hit Puerto Rico, causing an influence outage across the island. </p>
<p>Puerto Rico&#39;s power grid is fragile, largely due to aging infrastructure and the island&#39;s regular exposure to extreme weather events attributable to global warming. Nevertheless, local utilities have made significant progress in stabilizing a really complex power grid in any respect points. <a href="https://pr100.gov/">From production to distribution</a>The generation of solar energy – especially from small rooftop systems that may supply individual households and businesses with electricity during power outages – is <a href="https://www.woodmac.com/news/tiny-drops-create-mighty-oceans-how-distributed-solar-keeps-the-puerto-rico-grid-afloat/">play a very important role</a> to make the system more resilient. </p>

<p>In 2023, I led a bunch of researchers in reconstructing the impacts of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico. We used a mix of geophysical models, engineering models of the facility and water grids, reviews of injury reports, and socioeconomic information to indicate how proposed hurricane preparedness strategies <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41560-023-01315-7">would affect low-income communities</a>. </p>
<p>We have learned that essentially the most effective technique to protect all community members is to strengthen the transmission grid in order that it may possibly withstand future impacts from events like Hurricane Maria. This will likely require latest transmission towers that may withstand extremely high winds and soil saturation. It could also include limiting exposure through measures corresponding to burying power lines. We haven&#8217;t studied the prices of those solutions, but presumably they&#8217;d be very high.  </p>
<p>Since then, we now have partnered again to reconstruct other major weather events in Puerto Rico and collect latest data, specializing in resilient electricity infrastructure and climate change adaptation. For this work, we install unique sensors on power poles and contours while observing the natural conditions around these transmission assets. These devices repeatedly measure the mechanical stress on the poles and the power of the transmission lines to handle the facility load under various weather and demand conditions, including extreme weather events.</p>
<p>By reconstructing past storms, collecting latest data on the state of Puerto Rico&#39;s infrastructure, and using machine learning algorithms, we plan to develop latest frameworks for predictive models to anticipate the chance of power transmission system disruptions during extreme weather events.  </p>
<h2>Inform regional measures</h2>
<p>In recent years, our research group has used satellite observations to find out that Caribbean sea surface temperatures are increasing by nearly 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit (0.5 degrees Celsius) per decade – a few of the <a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/atmos14060999">fastest ocean warming on earth</a>This trend has a direct impact on the chance of more frequent and intense hurricanes. </p>
<p>It also affects ambient temperatures on land, resulting in extreme heat conditions. In the summer of 2023, town of San Juan experienced a sustained heat wave with heat indices above 38 °C. This level is taken into account unhealthy for most individuals. </p>
<p>Heat warnings and record temperatures forced the federal government to do all the pieces it could to guard students. <p>My colleagues on the Caribbean Climate Adaptation Network and I imagine our findings are transferable to other Caribbean communities. Our work may profit coastal areas within the Americas, where critical infrastructure is extremely exposed and storms often hit essentially the most vulnerable people hardest. </p>
<p>We hope our work with communities will result in broader education and latest actionable science that may guide climate change adaptation decisions and risk mitigation investments. Specifically, we aim to develop strategies to make island infrastructure significantly more resilient and adaptive, in addition to safeguards to guard communities and maintain a way of normalcy in a warmer climate.</p>

<p>Scenes from the Houston area <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w58Xc82d4TA">looked just like the aftermath of a hurricane</a> In early May after a series of severe storms <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWr2-gTS8II">flooded highways</a> and neighborhoods and sent rivers over their banks north of town.</p>
<p>More than <a href="https://apnews.com/article/flooding-texas-houston-rain-bdac71b839dc0966cd03288113956279">400 people needed to be rescued</a> from houses, roofs and cars, based on The Associated Press.  Nearly 20 inches of rain fell in Huntsville from April 29 to May 4, 2024.</p>
<p>Floods are complex events that involve greater than just heavy rain.  Each community has its own unique geography and climate, which may make flooding worse.  In addition to those risks, extreme rainfall events have gotten more frequent as global temperatures rise.</p>
<p><a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=viGxwOwAAAAJ&#038;hl=en">I work with</a> A <a href="https://glisa.umich.edu/about/team/">Center on the University of Michigan</a> This helps communities transform climate knowledge into projects that may reduce the damage of future climate disasters.  Flooding events like those within the Houston area provide case studies that can assist cities in all places address increasing risk.</p>

<h2>The risk of flooding is increasing</h2>
<p>The very first thing the recent floods show us is that the climate is changing.</p>
<p>In the past, it may need made sense to view a flood as a rare and random event—communities could easily rebuild.  But the statistical distribution of weather events and natural disasters is shifting.</p>
<p>What may need been a 1-in-500-year event could turn out to be a 1-in-100-year event on the option to a 1-in-50-year event.  When Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in 2017, it also took Houston with it <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/08/29/houston-is-experiencing-its-third-500-year-flood-in-3-years-how-is-that-possible/">Third 500-year flood</a> inside three years.</p>
<p>Fundamental physics points to the increasing risks: global greenhouse gas emissions are resulting in a rise in global average temperatures.  Warming results in increased precipitation and heavier rainfall, in addition to increased flooding potential, especially when storms hit already saturated ground.</p>

<h2>Communities should not prepared</h2>
<p>The recent floods also reveal weaknesses within the design and management of communities.</p>
<p>Plaster is a <a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2019GL086480">Main contributor</a> to urban flooding since the water can&#8217;t be absorbed and drains away quickly.  The frequent flooding within the Houston area highlights the risks. More roads, parking lots and buildings meant more standing water and fewer places for rainwater to sink.</p>
<p>If infrastructure is well designed and maintained, flood damage may be significantly reduced.  However, researchers have increasingly found that the technical specifications for drainage pipes and other infrastructure vary <a href="https://time.com/6094221/hurricane-ida-engineering-protection/">not sufficient</a> to address the increasing intensity of storms and rainfall.  That can result in this <a href="https://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/flood-recovery.htm">Roads are being washed out and communities are being cut off</a>.  Failure to take care of infrastructure resembling levees and storm drains is a typical reason for flooding.</p>
<p>Reservoirs are also a necessary a part of flood management within the Houston area. <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/05/03/weather-flooding-polk-liberty-montgomery-harris-county/">and lots of were at capability</a> of persistent rain.
