Oakland – A emperor everlasting patient filed a lawsuit against the medical provider last week and claimed that he was sexually abused during an operation, in accordance with a press release from the Zinn law firm.

The victim, 58-year-old Michael Bean from Berkeley, claims in a lawsuit that was submitted on February 14 on February 14 that in a skin cancer surgery in 2024 a medical assistant pushed his penis into his shoulder area. According to the press release, Bean submitted complaints to Kaiser, but never a solution in order that he brings the hospital giant to court.

In an interview with the Bay Area News Group, he called it a “terrible experience” and “one that I had to share.”

“Basically, I was confused, amazed, outraged, freaked out about this entire experience, and (the abuse) occurred pretty much during the entire procedure,” said Bean. The suit names hospitals of the Emperor Foundation and the everlasting Medical Group as a defendant.

In an evidence, Emperor said everlasting officials that they may not comment on the lawsuit because she is energetic, but “would like to be clear that we take such a claim extremely seriously”.

“Protecting the security and well -being of our patients is our priority. In accordance with this commitment, Emperor does not tolerate permanent sexual harassment or misconduct on our premises, ”the reason says.

At Bean, basal cell carcinoma was diagnosed on his left cheek near his ear. Therefore, on February 14, 2024, he made an appointment to remove it within the Mohs clinic of the Kaiser San Rafael Medical Center.

When the appointment, he was treated and instructed by a female doctor and a male medical assistant to shut his eyes and never to talk in the course of the operation or not to maneuver to forestall accidents, in accordance with the press release.

Bean said he took the instructions seriously and the doctor began to remove skin cancer.

But in the course of the operation, Bean said that he played something stiffly against his arm, and although his eyes were closed, he could imagine what it was. It took the lawsuit in the course of the 30- to 45-minute procedure. Bean said he didn’t know whether the doctor was aware of what had happened to him.

“There was no other part of the anatomy of this gentleman, who was near Michael's right shoulder,” said his lawyer Carter Zinn. “It couldn't have been an arm or a kneecap, these goods were not in the immediate vicinity.”

When Bean's operation was accomplished, he said that the medical assistant led him to the waiting area, where he was sitting for an hour when the sample was examined until the identical medical assistant got here back and got it out of the power. He said he said nothing concerning the experience because he was in a “state of unbelief and shock” and desired to go as soon as possible.

Bean said he fought against months of fear and wondered whether experience was a dream or whether it was real. After receiving an e -mail from Kaiser to evaluate his experiences, someone from Kaiser who calls him back. Although he did all of this, he never received a solution, he said.

It is unclear whether the medical assistant still works for Kaiser, but Zinn said that a lawyer from the hospital couldn’t assure him that Bean would not come across the hospital worker. Zinn hopes that the lawsuit will contribute to compensating Bean for the trauma he has suffered, but additionally admitting emperors to reveal his clients – and possibly others – to abuse.

“If a hospital makes a mistake if it has to write a check, it makes them more likely that they will not do it again,” said Zinn.

Zinn encouraged everyone who has experienced sexual assault or abuse and would love to support the national hotline for sexual assault under 1-800-656-4673.

“When abuse occurs, they have two options: they run and hide in the dark and it eats and it eats and it hurts them and the pain continues with the perpetrator and everyone involved,” said Zinn. “Your other option is to move to the light and to shine the bright light of truth, honesty and justice on the incident in order to correct it.”

Chapin, SC (AP)-Rep. Nancy Mace from South Carolina used an almost one-hour speech on the US house floor on Monday to accuse her ex-fiancé of getting physically abused her and taking sex files along with her and others without her consent. And conspiracy with business partners in rape files and sexual misconduct.

Mace said she had an impact since the top prosecutor's office of her home state even after alerting the investigators. The same prosecutor will probably be Maces opponent if she runs for South Carolina's governor in 2026, which she is considering.

Mace said she “sank earth”, as Mace said in November 2023, she said that “accidentally presented some of the most hideous crimes against women. We speak of rape, not consensual photos, not mutually acceptable videos of women and underage girls as well as the intentional, calculated exploitation of women and girls in my district. “

Mace mentioned that 4 men were involved, including Charleston's businessman, Patrick Bryant, who was her fiance by 2023 and dulled for her during her re -election campaign.

The AP was able to examine the MACE claims independently. Bryant said to AP: “I categorically deny these allegations. I take this matter seriously and can work completely with all of the obligatory legal processes to eliminate my name. “

Mace accused the Attorney General of South Carolina, Alan Wilson, an investigation by Bryant and the opposite men after bringing the photos and videos to the state authorities.

“Has the Attorney General of South Carolina charged one of these predators after submitting clear evidence of video, photos and witnesses?” Asked Mace and located that her office had gotten a tip for everybody with information concerning the allegations.

In an announcement after Mace's speech, Wilson's office called her comments on the behavior of the general public prosecutor “Categorically wrong” and said that the office had “received no reports or inquiries to support law enforcement or public prosecutors in relation to these matters”.

Mace, a former member of the state of South Carolina State House, was the primary woman to finish the citadel, the state's military, college of the state, where her father then acted because the commander of the cadets. Shortly within the State House, she served as the primary Republican woman in 2020 to represent South Carolina within the congress and, after a single term, turned the first district with a democratic representative.

Her decision to disclose the accusations in a floor speech was unusual. In a press release, Mace emphasized that the statements of the members concerning the house soil are “included” legislative actions “and are therefore protected by the clause” speech or debate “, which generally protects the legislator from suing what they are saying.

“This is not a story about bitter ex-girlfriend or mutual sex straps-there are many of them. I don't care what two consent to adults agree, ”said Mace. She mentioned a dozen bills on which she had worked in the home, on topics that range from voyeurism to the ban on transgender women from using women's baths within the US capitol or house office buildings.

In 2019, Mace spoke publicly a couple of sexual assault for the primary time, of which she said Fetaler heartbeat.

On Monday, Mace said she was of several women she said of Bryant and the opposite men. Reps were among the many Republican legislators who were sitting behind Mace during their speech to point out their support. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo and Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla.

“Nancy Mace is our girlfriend and we wanted to support her and give her the encouragement she needed to get this message out,” said Boebert.

The 47 -year -old Mace won a 3rd term of the US house in November and said that “seriously about a 2026 run for South Carolina's governor”. When she enters into this race, she is going to probably compete within the Republican area code against Wilson – in his fourth term and likewise the son of Rep. Joe Wilson.

Mace has largely supported President Donald Trump, who worked for his campaign in 2016, but after January 6, 2021 raised criticism against him that violence within the US Capitol, criticizes that Trump supports a GOP challenger in her 2022 race. Mace defeated this opponent, won the re -election and was approved by Trump in her 2024 campaign.

Mace rejected additional comments within the Capitol after the speech. When asked how she felt now, she said: “I'm in peace.”

Over the weekend, Reese Witherspoon denied that between her and her “good friend” Kate Winslet gave some form of drama after she was in an interview a few famous actress who stopped together with her after she had bustle a award ceremony.

In fact, Witherspoon looked as if it would tell her fans that they were in charge for trying to find out Winslet as a famous actress by writing Instagram stories on Saturday. As people reported. “Hey guys … I spoke to my very dear friend for years, Kate W. We laughed at this stupidity,” she wrote.

Yes, the “legal blonde” looked as if it would suspect the fans that they were “stupid” and “silly”, even to invest about something that was as “untrue” as she emphasized in full caps. “Please don't believe the Internet,” said Witherspoon. “We are good friends and have never fallen out.” The story is not any longer available on Instagram.

But the fans identified that Witherspoon began your complete Brouhaha himself by ran out last week in an interview with folks that she by accident ruined a friendship with a “serious, real actress” by saying Bawdy things about her, While she presented her in a “classic” British British British British area, while presenting her in a “classic” British British area, in a “noble” British company, she introduced her to enter in a “classic” British area that she presented in a “classic” British “British” British “when it was presented in a” classic “British” British “British” when she was in a “classic” British “award ceremony.

“It literally follows me,” said Witherspoon in a joint interview with Will Ferrell to promote her new romantic comedy: “You are welcome,” said the people.

“So, this friend of mine, which I didn't know rather well, but she was a really serious, real actress. She asked me to present her an award,” continued Witherspoon without naming the actress. “But I had never been to this award ceremony, so I assumed it was like roasting. So I got up and roasted them. “

Witherspoon revealed that the event was “British”, “elegant” and “classic” and that she understood the tone completely wrong by cracking jokes in her speech. “I assumed: 'Do you remember the time we got laser hair removal?”

Withherspoon said for these and other blatant comments that the unnamed actress had stopped talking to her. “We are no longer friends. I'm not even joking – we are no longer friends, ”she said with a laugh. “I believe she doesn't like me anymore. I assumed it was so funny and it was just I had the unsuitable audience. It was pretty bad. Yes. Not even a joke, she not speaks to me. Well. “

But because Witherspoon did not name the actress, she naturally sent through the film fans to roll over her career in order to theorize the identity of the A-List-Thespianer, which she has deeply insulted. It was not so difficult for the fans to conclude that the actor was probably Winslet.

In November 2007, Witherspoon honored the “Titanic” star on stage at the BAFTA/LA CUNARD Britannia Awards. Winslet received an artist of the year from the Los Angeles branch of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). A copy of Witherspoons speech about Winslet was preserved on a fan website and contained a possible indication of the laser hair removal and the Oscar winner that she could not tell her personal stories about Winslet because “they are all too shaky or tawdry Or to tell drunk, “including the” really funny thing that happened when they were both in their underwear “.

Since this speech, Witherspoon and Winslet have appeared together in public, especially on the EIGHTH Academy Awards in 2016, to present two movies together that were nominated for the perfect picture this 12 months. They were photographed together and exchanged hugs.

If Witherspoon and Winslet never came upon, the fans can speculate whether there’s one other A-list star who has stopped chatting with with Witherspoon-or whether the star “Big Little Lies” only the story about Winslet's loss Or in regards to the lack of Winslet one other Mystery actress as a girlfriend. Maybe she also felt forced to create somewhat damage control for her story.

In any case, people comment who comment on About the history of People Magazine With Witherspoo's rejection, she thought she was “nutty” and was not inclined to let her out of hook for her role within the Winslet drama. “Nobody would speculate whether she had not addressed the topic,” said one person. “She was a celebrity for too long to know that some people would research.”

At a White House press conference, Trump claimed that guidelines for promoting diversity, justice and inclusion “for the collision, the deadliest US aircraft crash since November 2001, could be responsible.

But Trump gave no evidence that the efforts caused the crash or were connected with it.

And he criticized a reporter who asked if he was going to investigate how it happened.

Trump pressed on how to connect the collision with Dei, and said: “Because I even have common sense, OK?”

Trump initially hit a dark tone at the press conference and spent the victims and their families condolts.

But he quickly gave attacks on his political enemies and DEI programs.

The crash occurred shortly before 9:00 p.m. ET Wednesday when the American Airlines Jet landed to the country on the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The helicopter of the army hit the aircraft with about 400 feet over the Potomac river, and both aircraft fell into the icy water.

The crash killed all 64 people on board the aircraft and the three soldiers on the helicopter.

Hundreds of first aiders searched the river to victims on Thursday. John Donnelly, head of the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services, said that at least 28 bodies have been recovered so far.

In the White House Trump first asked for a moment of silence for the victims.

“Today we’re all with a broken heart,” he said.

But less than two minutes later, Trump started attacking his democratic predecessors Biden and former President Barack Obama.

Trump claimed that after taking office in 2017 I changed the Obama standards [for U.S. aviation systems] At best from very mediocre to extraordinary. “

“And when I left the office and took over bidges, he changed her back to lower than ever,” said Trump. “Her policy was terrible and her policy was worse.”

Trump then read from articles that criticized critical diversity efforts within the Federal Aviation Administration.

He also emphasized the language from the FAA website in regards to the government, which places special emphasis on individuals with “targeted disabilities”, including partial paralysis, severe mental disabilities and psychiatric disabilities.

But this language has been on the web site since then At least 2013 – A period that accommodates Trump's entire first concept of the White House – in response to the Internet Archive -Website The Wayback Machine.

Later on Thursday, Trump signed one other memo wherein an “immediate” rating of aviation safety in view of what an adjutant from the White House called “The Biden Administration Dei and Woke Policies” called.

At the Press Conference of the White House, the transport secretary Sean Duffy and Defense Minister Pete Hegseth modified each on the idle change to praise Trump for his treatment of the crash and repeat his comments that the federal government based on “merit” and never Diversity should set.

“The era of Dei is gone to the Ministry of Defense,” said Hegseth.

Trump also attacked Pete Buttigieg, bidens transport secretary and called him a “catastrophe” that “just got a good series of bulls”.

Buttigieg quickly struck back and called Trump's comments “loathesome”.

“Trump should mourn as families and not lie,” said Buttigieg in an X -Post.

“We put the security in the first place, drove close calls, expanded the air traffic control and had no fatal deaths from Commercial Airline from millions of flights on our clock,” he wrote. “President Trump now monitors the military and the FAA. One of his first acts was to shoot and suspend some of the key staff who have contributed to protecting our sky.”

“Time for the President to show the actual leadership and explain what he will do to prevent this from happening again,” said Buttigieg.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Convised Trump for his comments.

“Since the bodies are still pulled out of the Potomac, Donald Trump and his coarse -competent administration accuse this fatal crash on minorities and white women,” Omar wrote in a post on the social media website bluesky.

“This is disgusting, racist and sexist. Your ruthless acts have consequences and they should be held accountable,” wrote the legislator.

Despite his criticism of the aviation policy of the past administrations, Trump said on Thursday: “Flying was very certain.”

“We have the safest flying all over the world and we will keep it that way,” he said.

The National Transportation Safety Board leads the crash examination, which may also include the FAA, American Airlines and others.

Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines, said on Thursday in a staff Note that the NTSB “heads the examination of aviation accidents”.

“The NTSB will be the only source of truth, and accuracy is of the greatest importance,” said Isom.

Trump said within the White House that he appointed Christopher Rocheleau because the “incumbent commissioner” of the Federal Aviation Administration. Rocheleau has been the deputy administrator of the FAA since January 21.

At the time of the crash, the FAA had no constant head. The former FAA administrator Mike Whitaker resigned on January 20, the day on which Trump took office.

President Donald Trump beat the chairman of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell and the US Central Bank on Wednesday, and said that they didn’t have stopped “the problem they caused with inflation” and did “terrible work in the bank regulation” .

Trump delivered a vital rate of interest at the present level for 2 hours after the FED decided. It was the primary interest decision by Trump's term.

Last week Trump said that he would “ask for interest rates to sink immediately.”

Powell has influenced the importance of the independence of the central bank from the skin, and the newly confirmed finance minister Scott Bessent has it repeated this view.

But Trump, who appointed Powell in 2018, but was soon determined with the choice – has questioned the long -term tradition of the Fed independence and stated that he believed that the president should receive a say in interest decisions.

As a presidential candidate in 2024, Trump said that he wouldn’t resume Powell if his current term of office as a Fed chairman ends in 2026, although he also said he wouldn’t attempt to end Powell's term at an early stage.

At a press conference on Wednesday afternoon last Wednesday afternoon, Powell defended all questions on Trump and his criticism of the Fed.

This didn’t block him in front of Trump, whose social post of truth Powell and the Fed blamed for the inflation of the Covid pandemic and held on the bidges.

Trump said he would cut back the prices and resume quite a lot of his economic agenda, including “Slashing regulation” and “Resuscitation of American production”.

“The FED did terrible work in banking,” wrote Trump within the post office. He said that the Ministry of Finance under Besser “would lead the efforts to reduce unnecessary regulation” and “to trigger lending for all American people and companies”.

The President also accused the Fed to focus on the sort of advanced ideals similar to climate change and variety, justice and inclusion that the brand new administration tried to scrap quickly.

“If the Fed had spent less time for dei, gender -specific ideology, 'green' energy and fake climate change, inflation would never have been a problem,” wrote Trump. “Instead, we suffered from the worst inflation in the history of our country!”

“On the one hand, [the iPhone has] “It was great because pretty much everyone in the world has a phone now, and that allows for some pretty amazing things,” Zuckerberg said on an episode of “Joe Rogan experience.” “But on the other hand… they have used this platform to introduce a lot of rules that, in my opinion, are arbitrary and… [I] I feel like they haven't invented anything great in a long time. It’s like Steve Jobs invented the iPhone and now they’re just sitting on it 20 years later.”

Zuckerberg added that he believed iPhone sales were weakening because consumers were taking longer to upgrade their phones because recent models weren't big improvements over previous models.

“So how do they make more money as a company? Well, they basically do it by pressuring people and, as you say, putting this 30% tax on developers, making you buy more peripherals and other things.” “Plug in,” said Pile of sugar. “You know, they build things like Air Pods, which are cool, but they've just completely limited the ability for everyone else to build something that connects to the iPhone in the same way.”

According to Zuckerberg, Apple is fending off opposition from other companies by saying it doesn't want to violate consumer privacy and security. But he said the problem would be solved if Apple improved its protocol, for example by building better security and using encryption.

“It’s unsafe because you don’t have any security built in. And then now you use that as justification for why only your product can make a simple connection,” Zuckerberg said.

Zuckerberg said that if Apple stopped using its “random rules,” Meta’s profits would double.

He also photographed Apple's Vision Pro headset, which had disappointing sales within the US. Meta sells its own virtual headsets called Meta Quest.

“I think the Vision Pro is one of the bigger attempts at a new thing that they've tried in a while,” Zuckerberg said. “And I don't want to put too much pressure on them, because we do a lot of things where the first version isn't so good, and you kind of want to judge the third version of it. But I mean, the V1 definitely didn’t do it quite as well.”

“I heard it’s really good for watching movies,” he added.

Apple didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment from CNBC.

By Ava Benny-Morrison and Rachel Metz, Bloomberg News (TNS)

In a lawsuit filed in federal court, Sam Altman's sister accused OpenAI's CEO of sexually abusing her for nearly a decade.

Ann Altman, 30, alleged that Sam Altman abused and manipulated her after they were growing up in Missouri within the late Nineties to early 2000s. According to the lawsuit filed Monday, the alleged abuse began when she was three years old and essentially the most recent incident allegedly occurred when he was an adult but she was still a minor. Ann Altman has previously claimed on social media that Sam Altman abused her.

Sam Altman, 39, released a press release on X on behalf of himself, his mother and his brothers on Tuesday, calling the claims “completely untrue.”

“This situation is causing great pain to our entire family,” the statement said.

Sam Altman, a longtime Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor, rose to global prominence with the large success of artificial intelligence startup OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, which created an AI frenzy when it was released in late 2022.

Under Missouri state law, plaintiffs may bring childhood sexual abuse claims as much as age 31. Ann Altman is suing for damages, claiming she has suffered severe emotional distress and faces mounting medical bills related to her mental health treatment.

The case is Altman v. Altman, 4:25-cv-00017, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Missouri (St. Louis).

Lawyers for Donald Trump told a New York judge that the president-elect's hush money trial was tainted by “serious jury misconduct” and that his guilty verdicts should due to this fact be overturned.

“The jury was not remotely fair and impartial in this case,” attorneys Todd Blanche and Emil Bove told Judge Juan Merchan in a Dec. 3 letter released Tuesday.

Prosecutors within the Manhattan District Attorney's Office responded on the time that the allegations “appear to be inaccurate” and noted that Trump's lawyers were resisting holding a hearing where the claims could possibly be “fully examined.”

Blanche and Bove's seven-page letter is heavily edited. The visible portions of the letter provide few details or evidence to support the allegations of wrongdoing.

The correspondence was released a day after Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Merchan rejected Trump's request to overturn his hush-money conviction, citing presidential immunity.

The judge didn’t rule on other arguments Trump's team had made to dismiss the case. Even if Merchan rejects the remaining challenges, it’s unclear when Trump, who takes office on January 20, is perhaps convicted.

In his ruling Monday night, Merchan addressed Blanche's allegations of jury misconduct, saying they “should be thoroughly investigated” – but only as a part of an affidavit.

“This court is prohibited from deciding such claims based on mere hearsay and conjecture,” Merchan wrote.

“Unless a properly filed complaint is filed, this court cannot permit the public filing of unsworn and admittedly contested statements,” the judge wrote.

“This would jeopardize the safety of jurors and violate the agreed upon regulation governing the disclosure of jury information.”

Neither Blanche nor the DA's office immediately responded to CNBC's request for added comment.

In late May, a jury found Trump guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a scheme leading as much as the 2016 presidential election to stop porn star Stormy Daniels from admitting to an alleged one-night stand with Trump years earlier discuss. Trump, who has denied having sex with Daniels, claimed he was the victim of a political indictment and a biased judge.

The USA Ministry of Justice sued on Tuesday visathe world's largest payments network, saying it was supporting an illegal monopoly on debit payments by imposing “exclusion agreements” on partners and stifling emerging businesses.

Visa's years-long actions resulted in American consumers and merchants paying billions of dollars in additional fees, based on the U.S. Department of Justice, which filed a civil antitrust lawsuit in New York alleging “monopolization” and other illegal conduct.

“We allege that Visa has unlawfully amassed the power to charge fees that far exceed what it could charge in a competitive market,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a Justice Department press release.

“Merchants and banks pass these costs on to consumers, either by raising prices or by degrading quality or service,” Garland said. “As a result, Visa's unlawful conduct affects not just the price of one thing, but the price of almost everything.”

Visa and its smaller rival MasterCard have skyrocketed over the past twenty years, reaching a combined market capitalization of around $1 trillion as consumers began using credit and debit cards as a substitute of paper money to make in-store and e-commerce purchases. They are essentially toll collectors that process payments between banks that serve the merchants and the cardholders.

Visa called the Justice Department’s lawsuit “without merit.”

“Anyone who has ever purchased something online or paid for something in a store knows that there are an increasing number of companies offering new ways to pay for goods and services,” said Julie Rottenberg, general counsel at Visa.

“Today's lawsuit ignores the fact that Visa is just one of many competitors in a growing debit market where new entrants are increasingly emerging,” Rottenberg said. “We are proud of the payments network we have built, the innovation we are driving and the economic opportunities we are enabling.”

More than 60 percent of all debit transactions within the United States are processed through Visa, which helps the corporate collect greater than $7 billion in processing fees annually, based on the U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit.

The decades-long dominance of payment networks has increasingly attracted the eye of regulators and retailers.

Litany of suffering

In 2020, the U.S. Department of Justice filed an antitrust lawsuit to dam Visa from acquiring fintech company Plaid. The corporations initially said they’d fight the lawsuit, but soon abandoned the $5.3 billion acquisition.

In March, Visa and Mastercard agreed to cap their fees and permit merchants to charge their customers for using bank cards. Retailers said the deal was value $30 billion in savings over five years. A federal judge later rejected the agreement and said the networks could afford to pay for a “significantly larger” deal.

In its criticism, the Justice Department said Visa threatened merchants and their banks with penalty fees in the event that they routed a “significant portion” of debit transactions to competitors, which helped preserve Visa's competitive advantage within the network. The contracts would protect three-quarters of Visa's debit volume from fair competition, the Justice Department said.

““Visa leverages its dominance, massive size and central position within the debit ecosystem to impose an internet of exclusion agreements on merchants and banks,” the Justice Department's press release said. “These agreements penalize Visa customers who transact through one other debit network or alternative payment system.”

In addition, in light of the threats, Visa “engaged in deliberate and escalating conduct designed to eliminate competition and stop competitors from obtaining the size, market share, and data obligatory to compete,” the Justice Department said.

Pay off competitors

According to the Justice Department, these measures have also hampered innovation. Visa pays its competitors hundreds of millions of dollars annually “to mitigate the danger that they are going to develop progressive latest technologies that would advance the industry but would otherwise jeopardize Visa's monopoly profits,” the lawsuit states.

Visa has agreements with technology corporations, including Apple, PayPal And squareand thus turning them from potential rivals into partners in a way that harms the public, the Justice Department said.

For example, Visa decided to sign an agreement with a predecessor of its Cash App product to ensure that the company, later renamed Block, did not pose a major threat to Visa's debit rails.

A Visa executive was quoted as saying, “We keep Square on a brief leash and our contract structure is designed to guard against disintermediation,” the complaint states.

Visa has an agreement with Apple in which the technology giant states that it will not compete directly with the payment network, “reminiscent of by creating payment features that rely totally on payment processes from providers aside from Visa,” the lawsuit says.

The US Department of Justice asked the courts to prohibit Visa from engaging in a number of anti-competitive practices, including fee structures or service packages that deter new market entrants.

The move comes in the final months of President Joe Biden's administration, during which regulators such as the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau have sued middlemen over drug pricing and pushed back against so-called junk fees.

In February, credit card provider Capital One announced the acquisition of Discover Financiala $35.3 billion deal that relies in part on Capital One’s ability to strengthen Discover’s payments network, which ranks fourth behind Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

Capital One said that after the transaction closes, the company will transfer all of its debit card volume and a growing share of its credit card volume to Discover over time, making it a more serious competitor to Visa and Mastercard.
